Do I need to pay my bus lane ticket?
Posted by IndicationLimp3703@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 20 comments
Short story long, I took a drive 6 hours away from where I live recently and had never been there before.
I accidentally entered into a bus lane and as soon as I realised it, I couldn’t reverse as another car was behind me and it was a one way system. It wasn’t clearly marked, at least I don’t recall seeing any postings, but I could definitely be wrong.
Now I received a ticket for £140 in the post.
Any guidance?

Use google maps street view, what do you see?
IndicationLimp3703@reddit (OP)
I’ll have to do that, thanks.
Pedantichrist@reddit
What did you see?

What guidance exactly are you looking for? The guidance is to pay up. Whether you’d been there before or not is irrelevant, the signs would have been up and you didn’t follow / notice them. That’s on you.

Yeah you’re right, and I was also trying to be hyper alert as I was nervous driving in a highly congested area that was new to me. Guess I probably missed the signs. I guess I was wondering if it was worth fighting or if they gave mercy based on merit.
I’m also trading the car in tomorrow and upgrading, and wondered if it follows me?

You're the one getting fined, not the car.
IndicationLimp3703@reddit (OP)
I understand that, but how do they know I was even the driver? It’s only an image of the back of the car. I’m just wondering theoretically. Thanks!

The registered keeper gets the fine if they do not provide details of the driver.
TheJezster@reddit
Pay the fine. There's no magical way to get out of it..
ConsistentCatch2104@reddit
It’s pretty hard to miss a bus lane! Just pay the fine if it comes and move on. No points.

I’ve tried contesting one in the past, I used the last few metres to get round traffic to take a left turn. Spent ages looking at the guidance, street view, going back to take a look.. they had it all covered. Worth an appeal if the fine won’t increase, otherwise just pay it and move on with your life.
seven-cents@reddit
You can attempt to dispute it.. good luck

Haha doesn’t sound promising. I’ll just pay it, that city need money anyway, desperately. Thanks!

Unless you're going to take a drive 6 hours back to get pictures/videos to prove it wasn't clearly marked, then you may as well lay it as fighting it, you'll lose unless you can prove it wasn't fair.
Plus, it's a long way to drive only to find out it was reasonably marked, but you somehow missed it.
72dk72@reddit
Google maps would be a good way to potentially confirm it was well signed.
CranberryCheese1997@reddit
Not necessarily. Depends on how old the street view is. Anything older than 6 months to a year may not even be that accurate anymore.
IndicationLimp3703@reddit (OP)
Agreed, thank you.

Pony up £140.

Cool, thanks
