Remember when Proctor and Gamble went through that phase when they worshiped the devil?

in the 80s my grandfather had a file folder in his kitchen that was equivalent to 4chan. All kinds of conspiracies and sexual memes.
i 100% remember when he pulled out his xerox copy of Proctor and Gamble's little picture that was on their products and this photo copied paper had notes on how each symbol represented satan worship...oh boy grandpa was a little out there.
revchewie@reddit
So kit-chan?
raisinghellwithtrees@reddit
We got the lowdown at school, by the principal.
djdecimation@reddit
1chan
1singhnee@reddit
It would probably be great fun to go through that file now.
zoot_boy@reddit
If I was drinking I would have spit it out. That is the funniest opening line today.
twirlingmypubes@reddit (OP)
It wasn't just your grandpa. Everyone we knew went on a mission to remove all of their products
iamjustsyd@reddit
Remember when it turned out Amway was behind the whole thing? You know, an actual cult.

Stop posting filth like this! Won't someone think of the children?!?
Elevated_Misanthropy@reddit
It's Ten O'Clock, do you know where your children are?
atreyukun@reddit
I already told you! No!
natedogjulian@reddit
I still worship the devil 👿
Textiles_on_Main_St@reddit
They no longer still?!? Fuck.

Satanic Panic fucked up a lot of innocent lives (ie west Memphis three, McMartin preschool) it’s so crazy how far people took it.
lajaunie@reddit
Man… dig into the WM3… I’ve watched all the documentary’s and what not and I believed them to be innocent.. but man, there’s some very damning stuff that was never covered and questions that were never asked.
I’d bet money that they’re guilty as sin.

There was a town near us that was rumored to have satanic rituals in the woods next to it. Everyone who had half a brain wrote it off as tall tales.
About 10 years later, a friend of mine became a cop in the town next to it. He told me that every Monday he had to kick over pentagrams and clean up sacrificed animals in those woods. Apparently the stories were true. The chief also had stories of his childhood around there, that some group conjured something up and ran out of the woods telling everyone to run, to the sound of fully mature pine trees snapping in the distance. Something cleared out a line of trees, but the only scientific explanation was a freak weather phenomenon where the Gulf Stream reached all the way down to ground level.
There some dark stuff out there.
Xer-angst@reddit
The boomers gave us Satanic Panic in the early 80s and now look where they are... They're sucking down gallons of Fox News and treating the internet like it's the bible! "But I saw it on the interwebs!!"
whatgives72@reddit
I think it was the Silent Generation that brought us the satanic panic
HowDidFoodGetInHere@reddit
No, it wasn't. My grandparents gladly gave me Iron Maiden and ACDC records for Christmas and birthdays. My mom was the one that flipped out over my musical tastes.
HowDidFoodGetInHere@reddit
Thanks for the downvote mom.

nixtarx@reddit
I remember the phase where my mom believed that...
lurkingsince4ever@reddit
Totally forgot! Also British Knight sneakers apparently represented the KkK? Or something. If you cut out the sole, you’d see something sinister according to the rumor. Lol
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
I knew it was fake when some "reformed satanist" came to our church and told lurid stories about eating babies and none of the adults left the room to call the cops on the guy who was standing right there confessing to being a baby-eater.
CyndiIsOnReddit@reddit
I do! I remember one of those news shows... maybe 60 Minutes? Talking about their logo and how it had secret satanic messages in it. My grandmother thought it was silly even though she was a good Christian woman. She just thought it was ridiculous.
1singhnee@reddit
Wow, I completely missed this.
Thank goodness I grew up in a liberal hippie college town. Not lots of satanic panic.
doneitoncealready196@reddit
Yes!! They had that star thing on the back and Tipper Gore told my Mom we couldn't listen to rock music!! 😂
RtrickyPow@reddit
Yes
Soggy-Programmer-545@reddit
Ya'll don't even know, I used to have to listen to all my records backwards to see if they have backmasking...I can still speak some of the backwards language. Not even joking....
2_Bagel_Dog@reddit
I was hoping someone would bring up backwards masking. We endlessly tried to spin records backwards...
Soggy-Programmer-545@reddit
Dog si eh natas! I had an old stereo that I had no problem spinning the record backwards and my older brother had all the great bands of the 70's on vinyl. Then I got a real to real after that and recorded my cassettes. I heard some things too. One time it was so bad I ended up sleeping on the floor in my parents' room. I was scared out of my mind. lol
Then one day my mom decided I could no longer listen to all of the "Satanic" music and burned all of it. My aunt even burned her daughters cabbage patch dolls. Those were crazy days. What is funny is now I actually do listen to Satanic music. he he.
rumpusroom@reddit
Wait, are they not worshipping Satan anymore? Time to cancel them.
HowDidFoodGetInHere@reddit
Oh man I forgot all about that... the moon and stars logo was somehow the giveaway, right?
invalidcharacter19@reddit
Ah the good ol satanic panic. Dee Snyder's speech to congress is still one of my favorite points in music history. The Christian right was on a roll back then.
MaximumJones@reddit
What is even funnier is that Tipper Gore was pretty much the ring leader.
invalidcharacter19@reddit
That's the best part!

John Denver of all people was excellent during that hearing

Electrical-Swim-5784@reddit
🤦🏻♀️ I remember that.
KCcoffeegeek@reddit
At least “our” Satanic Panic was funny and cool. The current iteration is too stupid to even acknowledge.
Last-Relationship166@reddit
I grew up in a town where a couple founded a daycare in the early 80s. They were subsequently falsely accused of Satanic Ritualistic Abuse of the children and their lives were ruined. I was a kid taking tap lessons at the building they used at the time the investigation went down. I remember an agent stopping by the house to ask my mom if she'd witnessed anything.
AnonOnKeys@reddit
How have I not been on this sub the whole time I've been on reddit?
Yes. Yes, I do remember when.
NorCalMikey@reddit
This was a Jeopardy question two nights ago.
ike_tyson@reddit
that was rumor because of their logo...70s and 80s were peak Satanic Panic.
ferriswheeljunkies11@reddit
This was a Jeopardy question this week.
rincewind120@reddit
The Satanic Panic. Heavy Metal music, Role Playing Games, various companies, and random celebrities were all trying to trick your kids into worshipping the devil.
I had friends who could not play Dungeons and Dragons in the house due to a religious parent, my own house was more lax. I asked my mom about this a few years ago. She told me that she had heard the Satanic Panic rumors back then and decided to just sit down and watch us during a gaming session. After 15 minutes she got up and never tried to stop us playing again. She told me later, "That was the nerdiest shit I had ever seen. You guys took fantasy stories then added math based rules to it. I knew there was no danger in the game."
Blaw_Weary@reddit
I’ve read a similar story on an rpg forum, but one where the concerned parents had the Pastor sit in on a game. He took part in the session and afterwards told the parents something along the lines of “it teaches them cooperation, history and math!”
thelordwynter@reddit
No but I remember the lunacy surrounding the D&D cartoon back in the 80's. A couple of twits in my hometown who played D&D, happened to ALSO get hooked on cocaine, AND joined a satanic cult out of Birmingham, AL. Then one night they walked into the local 7-11 and shot the clerk. She was the mother of a guy I was friends with in school and little league baseball.
That set half the state on high-alert for 'devil-worshippers' for the next ten years.
mynextthroway@reddit
Funny how a judge molesting children doesn't set the state on high alert to be on the look out for Christians and politicians.
thelordwynter@reddit
Don't even get me started. My adoptives left me with CPTSD from the hell I went through in their home.
North_Artichoke_6721@reddit
Remember that people thought if you had Cabbage Patch Dolls in the house, it would invite evil spirits to mess with a woman’s labor or something?
People are just… so, so dumb.
wrongsock_42@reddit
When did they stop?
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
What's funny is that directly above this post in my feed is a D&D sub talking about the satanic panic.
I'll say here what I said there: find the book Satanic Panic. The same crap people were doing back then, they're doing now, only with different scape goats.
Good_Nyborg@reddit
Throw it on the pile with the rest of them.
RomanHawk1975@reddit
lol. I remember that. The holy rollers at church were always pressuring folks not to boycott P&G products.
Background_Tax4626@reddit
Play Black Sabbath backwards. You know that's Satan! The media even said so. 🤔🤪🤣
TakeMeToThePielot@reddit
One of my classmates in 5th grade was circulating poorly-photocopied leaflets around school because he’s crappy family made him. Poor kid…
Writefrommyheart@reddit
I remember my family got some random flyer in or door telling us not to use Proctor and Gamble, and it went on in great detail about their supposed connection to devil worship. We just threw the flyer in the trash and went on about our business. Strange times.
earinsound@reddit
they were forced to get rid of it. satanic panic. absolutely asinine
CheopsII@reddit
That little episode of satanic panic is what clued me in on just how stupid people are.
Dragonfly-Adventurer@reddit
That was embarrassing and the last time I fell for one of these. Whereas all the "adults" at the time took it as a personal mission to fall for every conspiracy since.
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
If I remember right, they sued Amway for defamation and won millions.
