Is $190 a good deal for this motherboard? Or should I go for something else for a similar price

I’m planning a trip to my local micro center to buy parts to refresh my computer and upgrade to the current generation, and this sale caught my eye while looking at Amazon (I’d get a price match once I get there). The problem is, it doesn’t seem to be a very popular board having so few reviews, and I can’t find anything definitively saying if it’s a good board or not.

Nah u can get a better b850 board for cheaper
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
The problem with a b850 for me is that it doesn’t have pcie 5.0, and if I were to get an x870e instead of an x670e it’s about $40-$50 more expensive for the only real upgrade being guaranteed USB 4.0 from what I’ve seen online.
Also what’s the issue with 6-layer pcb?
Neraxis@reddit
Nothing much in reality.
My 6 layer PCB B650 tomahawk does just fine with RAM OC timings.
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
Is it just a matter of heat distribution/dissipation? I wouldn’t be going over 6000mhz speed
Neraxis@reddit
Nope, just fancy tech to isolate signals to preserve the faster and faster RAM as time goes on.
useful but unless you're doing extreme OC that 6 v 8 layer PCB shit does not matter unless you got real shit luck on silicon lottery.
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
Ah thanks for the clarification! I don’t plan on overclocking past 6000 mHz or overclocking my CPU since that shit scares me 😅
Neraxis@reddit
Even if you did nothing's going to blow up until you start pushing voltages significantly past default expo settings. Either way, PCB layers does not determine if it will blow up or not, just maximum theoretical limits.

PCIe 5.0 for the top PCIe x16 slot and M.2 slot is standard on B850.
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
Really? https://www.digitalcitizen.life/x670e-x670-b650e-b650-chipsets/ says the only PCIe 5 is for the SSD and the GPU is only gen 4
kaje@reddit
Look at the specs for the actual mobos, like
https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B850%20Pro%20RS/index.asp#Specification
Active-Quarter-4197@reddit
Don’t get a x870e get a b850
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
I just told you why that wouldn’t work for me. I hope to get a 5070 in the near-ish future so I need it to support pcie 5.0
Active-Quarter-4197@reddit
Almost all B850 have pcie 5.0 x16 bruh even the cheap ones
whomad1215@reddit
get one of their cpu/mobo/ram bundles
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
My micro center only has b650 bundles right now unfortunately, or I absolutely would
whomad1215@reddit
You buying a 5090?
Because the 4090 barely saturates pcie3
TheKitler@reddit
Get one of these B650 or B850 boards instead (B850 if you want the additional features): https://pcpartpicker.com/products/compare/szfxFT,CvcgXL,3f8Pxr,Rf8Pxr/
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
I would definitely be considering b6/850 if not for my need of PCIe 5.0
TheKitler@reddit
For what?
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
A 50-series GPU
TheKitler@reddit
Real world performance loss from PCIe 4 vs 5 is about 1-2%. It's really not necessary, especially with low or mid-range cards.
Your extra dollars are better spent elsewhere.
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
That doesn't make sense to me, especially considering PCIe 4 is 16 gigatransfers/s while PCIe 5 is 32/s. From my understanding it is supposed to be twice as fast on paper. Unless you are only considering PCIe 4.0 GPUs, and not ones that utilize PCIe 5
TheKitler@reddit
Yes, the bus speed is double but the GPUs don't use all of that bandwidth. PCIe 3 vs 4 was the same result.
KingKandyOwO@reddit
Ive had nothing but issues with that board. We arent sure if its the board or not, but I have my hunches. Id recommend getting something else
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
What sorts of issues?
KingKandyOwO@reddit
Endless blue screening of memory management and critical failure. Changing the RAM and erasing and flashing the BIOS worked for abit but now the problem is back. Could just be I got a bad one and the RAM has bent pins in the slot. Im just abit salty. I like the ample USB ports and the 4 NVME slots, the GPU covers up two of them
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
Do you have two or four sticks of RAM? I've heard of MSI having issues with 4 sticks of high-speed ram before.
KingKandyOwO@reddit
2 x 6000mhz....well we thought the blue screening was because of xmp as well but it happens even without
ThisDumbApp@reddit
Does 50 series need PCIE Gen 5 or something lol
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
Indeed they do, unless I want to bottleneck it and waste money
ThisDumbApp@reddit
And where did you get this info?
Woahdang_Jr@reddit (OP)
Nvidia website iirc
ThisDumbApp@reddit
I dont think PCIE Gen 5 is mandatory, Gen 4 will more than likely be completely fine.
zgmk2@reddit
It’s a good mobo for its price.
