Flying back home today and noticed that B46 at DIA seems to be the only gate with an American flag on the Jetway. Is there a specific reason for this gate?

Couldn’t find anything definitive googling.
PourLarryaCrown@reddit
UA uses that gate for honor flights.
__Osiris__@reddit
And what’s that?
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
Honor Flight or Angel Flight is when a commercial aircraft brings the remains of a fallen service member back to the US
__Osiris__@reddit
And by vet you mean a retired soldier. Not animal helpers?
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
Not necessarily retired but yes, a veteran. Not a veterinarian
__Osiris__@reddit
We call veterinarians vets where I live tis all.
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
So do we, it's just kinda interchangeable. In context, Americans and probably Commonwealth would assume I didn't mean the blessed pet doctors
Centrist_gun_nut@reddit
Some vets are vets, however.
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
And those vet vets are beyond recognition. We sent a MWD to a field vet for shrapnel wounds and that lady made that dog just like new in like a week
HuntingtonNY-75@reddit
Honor Flight is a program that takes veterans to Washington DC to visit memorials. Dignified Transfer’s take place when US service member KIA or LOD remains are carried to a home or connecting airport.
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
Is that not what I said
HuntingtonNY-75@reddit
You said HF brings vets overseas, that is not correct.
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
They do though, they bring them to Normandy and Holland
HuntingtonNY-75@reddit
https://www.honorflight.org/about-us/
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
That's great. The guys we brought to Normandy in 2018 and 2019 were not on the C-17s and they sure as shit didn't pay their own way. Honor Flights might also be domestic, but they also go overseas
homie_j88@reddit
Angel flight is also not just for wounded or fallen service members but also civilians in need of medical treatment far from home. Also includes for community service, like flying to NC bringing supplies for hurricane relief and to CA for fire victims
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
Yeah I mentioned that in a different comment. That's not what I was talking about though
Zestyclose-Ad-5305@reddit
Uh, angel flight is a group of pilots with their own planes who fly very sick people to get medical treatment where there isn’t a specialist in the area.
Grunti_Appleseed2@reddit
That might be a civilian thing but that's absolutely not what it is in the military. I sent a couple guys home that were destined for Angel Flights and I promise you they were very much dead
chucchinchilla@reddit
Wow, my initial thought was tragedy considering BOS has flags just like this on the 2 gates used on 9/11.
imaguitarhero24@reddit
That's a random thing I never thought about: the gates used on 9/11. The very same jet bridge some people walked down not long before tragedy... definitely eerie.
theaviationhistorian@reddit
I always thought it was odd considering there are many gates in US where people walked down before crashing. One I do wonder sometimes is at O'Hare where American flight 191 crashed and became the deadliest accident in the US.
But 9/11 did change this century for the worse and was part of the world we live in today. And I guess it is more of a tribute to a terrorist attack than terrifying passengers with marking airbridges where people passed while living their final hours.
viperlemondemon@reddit
Dulles and Newark also do it for the two gates also
popups4life@reddit
Since EWR has now replaced the old Terminal A they did move the flag, as the original gate A17 no longer exists.
I believe it was moved to a police training center near or on the airfield.
amailer101@reddit
I was always wondering what happened to that flag, Thanks for the info
SentientTapeworm@reddit
“Honor flights”?
Small_Collection_249@reddit
What is that? We don’t have that in Canada
1-760-706-7425@reddit
Small_Collection_249@reddit
Learned something new today.
That’s pretty cool they do that for vets.
Logical_Marsupial140@reddit
When you signup to risk your life and fuck shit up for politicians, they have to give you some bread crumbs.
GrottyKnight@reddit
Except its not 5 doing it. They are, in fact, screwing shit up for vets at a pretty good click
Logical_Marsupial140@reddit
That's the irony.
Foggl3@reddit
Don't forget the free meal one day a year
SeenSoManyThings@reddit
Thanks for the source. I had seen the term honor flights used for a commercial flight carrying remains of armed service members who died in the line of duty.
Mudbutt7@reddit
This is incorrect.
United could use this gate for an honor flight. However, we have no dedicated gate for this. Usually depends on aircraft type and time of arrival/departure.
reagbotics@reddit (OP)
That’s awesome. Thank you so much!
Inevitable_Street458@reddit
So the flag question was answered, now can we do something about painting B terminal? Surely paint isn’t THAT expensive.
Z_3977@reddit
They are( or at least were) working on it as of a few months ago but I have not seen them doing any more painting since August or September
Slavx97@reddit
Ahh but you see it’s airport paint so therefore it’ll be 5x the price
ztaylor16@reddit
Passengers rarely look AT the building because they’re inside of it, or too busy looking at ground crews and buckling their seatbelts to glance at the terminal. Realistically that’s why they don’t paint it… because it doesn’t matter
toborgps@reddit
Was just looking at that. They’re too busy remodeling the terminals to fix things 😂
Confident-Security84@reddit
All hail Blucifer
iReply2StupidPeople@reddit
I've flown hundreds of times into DEN and I've never seen the damn bull. My coworker talks about it all the time.
Confident-Security84@reddit
It’s at the entry/exit, you need to be in a vehicle. Cooler at night with the red eyes.
iReply2StupidPeople@reddit
Well I've driven a rental into the rental lot and been to the gas station literally 100 times, is it at arrivals/departures for dropoffs or something? That's the only place I can think i might not have seen.
Gemini00@reddit
It's right here
iReply2StupidPeople@reddit
Okay, that makes sense. I'm always on the access road at that point of pena.
Malefectra@reddit
It’s just before the large illuminated airport name signage coming in from I-225.
SeaweedCritical1917@reddit
It’s when you drive into the main terminal
spillman13@reddit
Blucifer is a bronco, and his eyes glow red. He’s magnificent. I ask and thank him for safe travels every time I fly.
PlayonWurds@reddit
It's actually a giant sea horse.
Mobiusixxi@reddit
When I worked there, it was Silver... Gah dang I'm getting old.
SeaMareOcean@reddit
Blucifer has always been blue, even before installation.
shankillfalls@reddit
The US really is a country of flagshaggers, I’ve never understood it. And every time I visit there seem to be more and more, bigger and bigger. People bring their own flagpoles to the beach. And now there’s concern about jetways having flags.
Anyway, just an observation.
JMulroy03@reddit
The flag represents our nation’s history, unity, and the sacrifices made for our freedom. It’s a strong symbol of our national identity.
747ER@reddit
Sure, but all countries’ flags represent that. Why is the USA in particular so prone to displaying their flags?
JMulroy03@reddit
Because we can. If you feel strongly about it, you can simple ignore it.
SeaMareOcean@reddit
It’s a bunch of uneducated religious extremists that have it drilled into their lead—addled brains that they’re “exceptional.”
GiveUpYouAlreadyLost@reddit
Does it really matter if they are?
747ER@reddit
No, it doesn’t. Why answer my question with an unrelated question?
GiveUpYouAlreadyLost@reddit
Because I don't understand why you would get so worked up over Americans flying their flag.
747ER@reddit
Did you mistake me for someone else? I’m not worked up at all.
AggravatingPermit910@reddit
Don’t come back then
OceanRadioGuy@reddit
Did anyone ask?
mamandemanqu3@reddit
Maybe a recent human remains came in to that gate.
Or it’s just a single flag on a single gate. Don’t over think it.
cyberentomology@reddit
That’s DEN, not DIA
LostPilot517@reddit
DIA (Denver International Airport) not to be confused with Dulles, Washington, DC.
I know the ICAO is KDEN(DEN).
That is why others are downvoting.
reagbotics@reddit (OP)
KDEN/ DIA — Denver International
Swimming_Way_7372@reddit
You can call it DIA, see people refer to Logan, Reagan, Dulles and other. No reason you can't say DIA.
747ER@reddit
Except DIA is the name of another large airport, which makes it confusing. Using ‘DEN’ for Denver and ‘DIA’ for Doha makes the most sense.
AllanNavarro@reddit
Doha’s airport code is DOH, and it has been for some time. So they should both be their own things.
747ER@reddit
DOH (Hamad International Airport) is a different airport to DIA (Doha International Airport).
AllanNavarro@reddit
and that airport doesn’t have commercial service anymore, so using DIA to refer to another airport that does is reasonable. No one will mistake them for one another.
747ER@reddit
Just because commercial flights have stopped at an airport doesn’t mean it never existed. I’ve personally flown to DIA twice… should I have to say “I’ve flown to Doha International Airport” instead, just because some people on the other side of the world want to intentionally use the wrong name for their airport? Unless you’re suggesting using ‘DIA’ to refer to both, in which case we’re back to my initial comment.
Swimming_Way_7372@reddit
Chances are there won't be a US flag flying at the airport in Doha. I'm pretty sure we know which DIA OP is on about.
747ER@reddit
Qatar has one of the largest United States military installations outside the USA of any country in the world. Are you really suggesting that the airport they use to welcome foreign dignitaries wouldn’t have a US flag at it?
Anyway it’s clear that you’re not going to change your opinion, and neither am I. We could go around in circles for hours, but I’ll elect not to. Have a great day mate.
AllanNavarro@reddit
if locals in a city call an airport with 77 million passengers a year something that clashes with another airport that has 0 passengers a year, common usage should win out. You can just say “I flew into Doha’s old airport.” and you’d be covered just fine. You’re the exceptional situation, not the thousands that transit through Denver everyday
EnergiaBuran@reddit
Yes. You should clarify because you are in the extreme minority. I know this might feel like an exceptional burden, but it is one you will have to bear.
747ER@reddit
Wouldn’t be the first time Americans have taken over something from the Middle-East as theirs ;)
According-Way9438@reddit
People do the same with kc. KCI vs MCI
omalley4n@reddit
It's even signed as KCI on local exit signs
BavarianBanshee@reddit
My condolences for having to go through that forsaken place.
GaiusFrakknBaltar@reddit
The airport? As far as airports go I think it's actually pretty nice.
I mean yeah, there's more turbulence there than elsewhere, but once you're on the ground, nothing at that airport stands out to me as bad.
fighterpilot248@reddit
Tbh I’d rather taxi around DEN than ORD. At least you MOVE in DEN.
freezingcoldfeet@reddit
best large airport in America imo. def better than dallas, lax, jfk or atl
twarr1@reddit
If you don’t mind taxiing for miles
fighterpilot248@reddit
Fun fact: the airport property is twice the size of Manhattan. Thing is crazy huge
xphyria@reddit
until the train breaks down which seems to be a monthly thing now
CapStar362@reddit
HA! ATL isn't the worlds busiest for a decade + for no reason
HighlyRegard3D@reddit
Two decades
Terrible_Toaster@reddit
World's best.... Not even close. World's BUSIEST though? That distinction ATL does in fact hold and has for a few years
https://airportindustry-news.com/atl-remains-worlds-busiest-airport-in-2024-oag-reports/#:~:text=Atlanta%20Hartsfield%2DJackson%20International%20Airport,combined%20domestic%20and%20international%20capacity.
WHB-AU@reddit
^arguing KDEN >>> ATL is hilarious
1-760-706-7425@reddit
Better than MSP?
santacruz6789@reddit
MSP is a shopping mall now. I miss flying out of there sometimes
brickson98@reddit
Best? Idk about that. But I do enjoy going thru Denver much better than Saint Louis, which is the other common layover for me, on the route I usually fly. Overall, I like Denver's airport.
RyzOnReddit@reddit
That’s because you don’t fly Delta and thus haven’t experienced their Fortress Hub in DTW. They don’t even let non-SkyTeam planes on their side of the airport 😎
Natural_Wrongdoer_83@reddit
I believe there is a gateway to hell there👀
Te_Luftwaffle@reddit
The I in DIA stands for Illuminati
fenuxjde@reddit
In my experience, they usually just seem to pop them in random gates. I could definitely be wrong though.
TigerUSA20@reddit
Newark Int'l had a flag on A17 for the longest time, which was where 9/11 Flight 93 left from. The terminal has now been rebuilt, so don't know if they carried on with the tradition. I'll have to check the next time I am there.
ugh168@reddit
The jetway for the old A17 at EWR https://www.fletc.gov/Jetway-17-Arrival
PushKatel@reddit
That's a touching story and a great way to preserve history, especially with someone that was on UA93 was a graduate of FLETC
RobertWilliamBarker@reddit
Yeah, we did a flight with human remains to KDEN. It was to B52, which from what I know about the departed seemed kind of crude.
TrainingReward4308@reddit
That gate is specific to one of the 9/11 planes.
fenuxjde@reddit
One of the planes from 9/11 was from Denver??
TrainingReward4308@reddit
Oh that’s in Denver. Sorry I thought it was BOS. I didn’t read that title.
BoulderEric@reddit
Biden is the 46th president.
ywgghia@reddit
I believe it is the gate one of the 9/11 planes left from.
Mike__O@reddit
The 9/11 airplanes took off from Boston (AA11, UA175), Dulles (AA77) and Newark (UA93).
I'm assuming OP meant Denver, but got the identifier wrong (that's why we should just name the damn city and stop trying to be cool with three letter identifiers in this sub). Denver had nothing to do with 9/11
Sturnella64@reddit
Denver locals insist on calling it DIA and not DEN, it's a whole thing
npantages@reddit
shakes fist at people who call MCO OIA….
Ryan1869@reddit
Yeah that's it's name (Denver International Airport), most locals are oblivious to airport codes.
Mike__O@reddit
It's more of a problem in this sub. People will drop a three or four letter identifier for an airport trying to act like one of the cool kids and just assume everyone knows what airport they're talking about.
Just drop the name of the damn city. If the city has more than one airport, or more than one city by that name (i.e. Portland) use amplifying information.
tl;dr-- talk like a real person
iReply2StupidPeople@reddit
Most people that fly regularly know airports (and cities for that matter) by the airport code.
Mike__O@reddit
I fly regularly and I don't know half the damn codes posted here.
Automatic_Mammoth684@reddit
Are the Denver locals on this sub? Why cater to morons?
doctor_of_drugs@reddit
why you got beef with Denver
Automatic_Mammoth684@reddit
Denver is cool, but who cares if the locals mislabel their airport? This sub shouldn't cater to people like that.
ANITIX87@reddit
Hahahah absolutely not. The aircraft used on 9/11 departed BOS, EWR, and IAD.
Sturnella64@reddit
None of those flights left from DEN
TrainingReward4308@reddit
Correct
shiftyjku@reddit
Didn’t the 9-11 flights leave from Boston and New York?
BrtFrkwr@reddit
People arriving at this particular gate often forget what country they're in and become confused. The flag is there as a convenient reminder and orients the lost and comforts the uncertain.
