Advice Needed for Short-Term GA Airplane Lease
Posted by Sky_737_@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 7 comments
Hi everyone,
I’m planning a flight to go across the country this summer and am looking into options for leasing a general aviation airplane for a couple of months. Does anyone have advice on where to look, what to consider, or how to find a short-term lease?
I’d greatly appreciate any tips, resources, or personal experiences that could help. Thanks!

I have actually heard of people doing this. Generally the airplane is already in a club or lease back to a flight school. Talk directly to the owner of the airplane, my understanding is the monthly minimums were very high, but it made sense in the use case of getting airplanes for an accelerated training outfit. Not going to be close to worth it if you're not flying every single day rain or shine.
Also, if you have to ask on reddit you do not have the right connections to make this happen.

The only way you'll be able to do this is if you can find a private owner that is willing to lease their plane out for the summer. Maybe someone that has lost their medical, or has travel plans? But no club or school will let you take an airplane for the entire summer.
The other option is to buy a plane and sell it at the end of summer, and hope nothing expensive breaks while you own it.

Ready to way over-spend for what you want? I'm talking like $3000/month minimum in addition to hourly operating cost and a monthly minimum.

What would you suggest for a flight like this. I would also be using the plane for instrument training in California before heading back

Honestly, that's not likely something you're going to be able to do as a renter.

Agree. Impossible. Buy into a small partnership and this could be doable if every partner agrees to lose the plane for that long.
Or, buy a low expense low frills 150. You can fly those things across America if you want, in VFR weather.
