ULPT Request- Inconsiderate idiot neighbor leaves light on all night.
Posted by Fuck_the_Norm@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 60 comments
A new house was very recently built behind mine. Already had it out with this douche when he tried building a fence on my property despite me putting up several stakes with neon orange tops that very clearly marked the property line. I don’t think he’s nefarious, he’s just an idiot. He keeps his godd&m spotlights on all night. Everyone on our street keeps it dark. This idiot just doesn’t get it. To further complicate things, his new neighbourhood doesn’t connect with ours. His house is built sideways just behind my 8 foot privacy fence. Because his house is juxtaposed directly behind my backyard fence, the light he has on is annoying AF. Help! Thanks!

How do you feel about pellet guns?
Best-Structure62@reddit
Get a Daisie Red Ryder BB gun and shoot out the light
dumblederp6@reddit
Mirror tint on your windows?
Secret-Tackle8040@reddit
A .22 pellet rifle should solve your problem.
jlm20566@reddit
This first and then shine an insanely bright spotlight back at his house so you drive home your point.
Rachel_Silver@reddit
Ideally, you reflect their own light back at them. That way, they can end their suffering instantly by turning off the lights or aiming them elsewhere. It also discourages the neighbor from thinking that a motion detector will solve the problem, so they'll go right to aiming them away from your home.
jlm20566@reddit
Very logical, but this is unethical life pro tips so revenge & suffering is a must.
the_pretender_nz@reddit
Fine, instead of a normal mirror to reflect it back, construct an Archimedes Mirror and burn his fleets in the harbour
jlm20566@reddit
Now this is what I’m talking about … burn them all!!!
Rachel_Silver@reddit
I don't disagree.

.22 WMR will get the message across better
Rachel_Silver@reddit
FUN FACT: If you fire a .22 from inside your home through a narrow window opening (and as far from the window as you can get), the room will basically act as a silencer. People might hear it, but they won't know what it is, and they'll have trouble figuring out where the sound came from.
SOURCE: When my dad was a kid, he would occasionally ring the bell in the steeple of the church across the street. For years, lots of people thought it was a holy miracle.
SludgegunkGelatin@reddit
whoah, lol

22 coked up furries will get the message across even better.

22 coked up midnight hillbillies raving will do even better!

22 feral hogs should solve things

22 teenagers with pocket full of rocks would get the message across

Nah I think a slug would be better. “Honey the light went off I think I heard the transformer blow too”
who_tf_is_dis_guy@reddit
I'm confused.
Your user name suggests it's ok to go against the norm... And the norm for your street is keeping the street dark.
You should be supporting him, no?
Skyblacker@reddit
If they're spotlights, ask him to turn them into his yard and away from your windows. He probably has no idea they're glaring at you.
Lil_Shanties@reddit
Too ethical, but it did work when I asked my neighbor to do the same.
Dreamsnaps19@reddit
Didn’t work with mine. So we now play light wars.
Lil_Shanties@reddit
Are you aware of the GE-48773 bulb? It is a war ender, a welding mask is recommended for eye safety when in operation as a weapon.
AddisonsContracture@reddit
$1800 each? For a lightbulb? Good god
Lil_Shanties@reddit
I mean, I never said rational 🤣 just that it’s a final solution in a war of lights.
Dreamsnaps19@reddit
Lol. So I am not trying to get actual code enforcement out. And the lights bother her enough. Twice she hammered in cardboard boxes onto her fence. Have I mentioned we live in Florida. Where it rains every day 🤣🤣🤣
angry_at_erething@reddit
Reach a pole over there and angle his lights towards the ground for him. Also, replace his bulbs with 10 Watt (equivalent) and he'll probably never notice.
BamBam-BamBam@reddit
There's probably a light solution ordinance in the nuisance laws. OP should call code enforcement.
SiriusGD@reddit
Rent a dog to bark all night and when he asks you to shut the dog up, tell him he barks at the light.
Frontline-witchdoc@reddit
Just get a PA system and play a recording of a dog barking. I have yet to encounter a dog rental business.
oldasdirtss@reddit
That is light activated, but only at night.
GnPQGuTFagzncZwB@reddit
Look at the light in the daytime. If it is one of those DIY street light kind of lights, look on the top of it and see if there a dome that has a photo switch that will turn it off when the sun rises.
We had an A hole person across the street who put one of them up just to annoy us as they knew we liked to stargaze. They put it way near the front of their place so it lit up our front yard more than theirs.
So, I went on eBay and I got a high powered green laser pointer, green is the easiest for you to see, and it also tends because of the way they work, have a lot of IR in them. I got a piece of that metal banding the plumbers use to support pipes and screwed that into the porch here and wrapped it around the laser so it held it tight. I took a tie wrap so I could slide it over the power button and hold it down, and carefully aimed it at the dome, and sure enough after about 30 seconds, the light popped off.
A bit later he came out, and you could clearly see the beam coming from the porch and hitting his light and OMG was he pissed. Threatening to call the cops etc. To be honest I do not know if turning them off like that is illegal or not, but I figured if a cop came and asked me to cut it out I would at least talk to him about it and consider it. The cops never came. It got to be a game, and after a while things came to a very acute head with another person around there and they sold out and left the area.

Get a few of those silver emergency blankets and cut each one into pieces about the size of college calculus textbook. Get some cheap lumber (old pallets will do nicely), some duct tape and some nails. Build frames a little smaller than the pieces of blanket. Stretch the material over the frames as tightly as possible, securing it with duct tape.
Set them up one at a time in your back yard so they reflect the light into a window. Target every window that you think might be a bedroom. Make sure the frames are stable enough that the wind won't move them. When you have one aimed, drape something over it so the next one will be easier to aim. This will also make it less likely that your neighbor will realize what you're doing before you're finished. When they're all aimed, remove the coverings and hustle inside.
Note that, because the reflective surfaces are flat, you'll reflect more light into the windows if you go with a larger number of smaller surfaces that with a few large ones.
quickporsche@reddit
Not sure but I think in this case you would use curtains.
Electrical-Pool5618@reddit
On an unrelated topic, a pellet gun is near silent but a sling shot is totally.
bigredcar@reddit
I like how you think
AnonUserAccount@reddit
Get a mirror and install it outside your house. Angle it so the light reflects into their bedroom window.
Previous-Thought2138@reddit
Arrange 100 small mirrors in an artistic fashion, call it a modern art sculpture that just happens to have every mirror reflect into different windows of his house.
u3plo6@reddit
send them articles on how "security" lights boost crimes
Cowpreensive@reddit
How tf do lights boost crime?
u3plo6@reddit
20 years ago I had studies printed for this reason, "outdoor lighting can decrease safety by making victims and property easier to see. A Chicago Alley Lighting Project showed a correlation between brightly lit alleyways and increased crime.
In fact, most property crime occurs in the light of the day. And some crimes like vandalism and graffiti actually thrive on night lighting." Basically, it makes it easier to SEE anything they want to take, and it's less conspicuous than yee ole cartoons of burglars with flashlights. What the other person says about people worried about things getting stole being the best tip off stands.
Calm-Track-5139@reddit
I have a security system because I have stuff to steal.
InvestigatorChance28@reddit
Have you heard of " piss disc "?
Tronracer@reddit
Green Giant Arborvitae on the property line. It will take a couple years, but it will 100% block out any light coming from the property.
Weird-Conflict-3066@reddit
A more appropriate ILPT would be for us to tell the neighbor in a couple of years to accidentally spill some diesel fuel.
omafiets_wink@reddit
Replace the light bulbs with wifi controlled bulbs and take the on/off command position.
Acceptable_Tomato548@reddit
buy some shutters and instal them on your house
KuddelmuddelMonger@reddit
Did you tried talking w/them?
reheateddiarrhea@reddit
People here are typically not into basic human communication, even if it's the easiest solution to their problem. I stopped recommending this after constant downvotes. I understand that talking to people is not unethical and therefore it doesn't fit the sub, but it's hard for me to not recommend the easiest solution. I see shooting out the light with a .22 air rifle as the top recommendation which could literally kill someone if they hit a window accidentally. It's crazy that people would prefer to risk a murder charge over having a mildly uncomfortable discussion.

This is unethical life pro tips 😂
R32burntheworlddown@reddit
First I'd talk to the guy. If he refuses to cooperate, get. 150w LED spot light directly to his bedroom or TV room.
Also get some security cameras around since the guy might try to vandalize your shit. Get it on video, file charge, get the mofo locked up, mortgage missed, goes for auction.
HappySunflowerSeeds@reddit
Mirrors
DegaussedMixtape@reddit
Shine spotlights directly into their windows and show them how annoying it is?
I would just get blackout curtains so I didn't have to worry about it in my house and choose not to be concerned about it outside. Some Blackout curtains are heavy enough to block it out.
boonepii@reddit
Yeah, never once cheaper and easier to use mirrors. Mount one for each window and aim them.
bcbadmom@reddit
How about putting up reflector mirrors just over your privacy fence so the light shines directly back at him and his house?
Also, check you city bylaws and see if they have anything related to light pollution. If they do, report him for leaving lights on all the time.
Witty_Candle_3448@reddit
Ethical solution, talk to the neighbor about at least pointing them more downward. Unethical, break the lights without being caught on camera.
walkawaysux@reddit
Get a bigger light aim it back at his bedroom crank it up. The battle now begins!
