I suspect most people know this already, but I just noticed that In S3E6, the trio encounters modern versions of their cars, while trying to prove Chinese people can buy european cars, while they already do that, making this whole thing useless. This makes the whole episode even more funny tbh.

That wasnt the point, while these european luxury cars were new back in 90s-00s, cars like these werent sold in high quantity in still developing china and that means that you wont find cheap european luxury sedans easily from used market like you would find from europe or america.
Their whole point was that chinese should import these old luxury cars from europe instead of buying chinese car but obviously we are watching funny tv show and in real life chinese cant just import used cars from europe and get them even road legal.

My understanding of this episode wasn’t so much that Chinese can’t/don’t buy European cars, it was that new European cars in china attract a large import tariff, and by getting second hand high end euros, they can save a lot of money in tax

I suppose they could still get second hand newer models still.
