ITT: People who didn't read the article. Typical.
Right now, salvage and scrap yards collect the metal, which is then packed into shipping containers and sent to 3rd world countries where peasants sort it for pennies a day.
The point of this company is to stop sending shiploads of scrap to the other side of the planet. If their method works, then it's better for everyone.

Except the 3rd world country, no?

Would also be cool if that aluminum was recycled and put back into something like an EV. You always hear about how electronics have recycled parts, but never cars.
Does recycled metal have less structural integrity or something?
Fair_Sweet8014@reddit
Not a material scientist, but I believe it gets turned into raw aluminum before being reused so there would be no difference.
Kriffer123@reddit
Aluminum is one of the most recycled materials in the world, and 90% of the aluminum used in cars is recycled so it kind of goes without saying that it’s mostly recycled. It’s just not really a worthwhile advertising point because basically any automotive aluminum is likely going to be recycled. It’s actually cheaper than making it from ore and is pretty much the same.

Sounds like electronics recycling, which often involves shipping things to more... business friendly locations where who-knows-what goes on with the materials. Getting rid of that sort of thing while still recycling the material is a win.

Good…

Cars are already recycled at salvage yards and scrap metal yards throughout the US...usually ran by rich rednecks that don’t calm their small business is a startup.
Robinhoodie5@reddit
The one locally is as Midwest as they come but has a couple lambos and other supercars lol.

Cars are also already one of, if not the most recycled consumer products in the US.
Juicyjackson@reddit
95% of cars are recycled at the end of their life.
Didn't realize how crazy high that was, makes sense though, might as well get something rather than nothing, even if the car is completely non functional, they usually pay like $250-$500.

This is hilarious. Sold a car to a guy that runs a metal recycling business. Fits this description to a T.

I thought we did this already. Its called a junkyard
wjames0394@reddit
You don’t have enough aluminum to make new.

My family has been doing this as a side business for many years, definitely nothing new.
