Advice before upgrading my CPU

Hey, so my cpu is bottlenecking, and is the oldest part of my pc too. I heard bottleneck calculators are trash so i think the next step of the operation is to consult reddit (👽🤫)
Heres the situatuon at hand: Asus prime b550m-A motherboard Nvidia RTX 3060 (not sure if 8 or 12 GB) AMD ryzen AM5 3600 Powerful PSU
I have no issue with playing on lower settings to reach 144 fps (the PCs task would be gaming, of course) which is no problem with most of the better optimized games buuut... i mostly play tarkov. It eats CPU performance like a motherfu**er. And I cant stand it anymore.
Please help me find a new CPU that wouldnt overperform my GPU too much My price range is up to up to 200€, i would prefer 150€ tho (jobless)
Thank you for everyone who is willing to lend their expertise, if you have any questions, ill be active :8

Your CPU isnt that slow, I very much doubt its bottlenecking anything, and definitely not in a game where you care about hitting 144 fps.Â
Your limiting factor in any game concerned with high frame rates will be your 3060 still.
Why do you want to hit 144fps anyway?
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
Because i have a 144hz monitor ^^, i dont know what kind of sync i have, I always disable vsync anyways. My main concern arent frames (i know my gpu is not the best) its really only tarkov. This game is horribly optimized and very cpu heavy, and i would be willing to spend some money if I can get 10 to 20 fps more there
BenFloydy@reddit
You dont need to hit 144fps for a 144hz monitor, I'm not sure why you think you do.
Gsync is a tech some monitors have which matches your monitor your game fps and solves any issues with tearing or need for vsync. Look in the Nvidia control panel and see if its on or if you can turn it on (use the fullscreen mode only coz the windowed mode is a bit sketchy). If your monitor says its not compatible in that control panel, consider upgrading the monitor for your use scenario. I am a convert to this.
If you want a new cpu bear in mind if it doesnt fit your mobo you'll need a new mobo, probably ram, etc.

I was under the assumption 144hz monitor means 144 fps is the maximum you can get, so I dont set my games for anything higher. I stated my mobo, do you recon it fits? Tomorrow, when i get home, i can tell you what ram i have.
If you have the knowledge and are willing to help me further of course.
Thank you very much regardless

144hz monitor can only display 144fps thats correct, but 144fps is more than anyone needs. Most people won't notice any difference between 60-100fps and 144fps, syncing issues aside.
Where you might notice some tearing is having fps out of sync with the hz, not having gsync/freesync, and not having vsync on (vsync will cure your tearing but introduce slight lag). Its worth checking your Nvidia driver as I say for this (contrary to popular belief, freesync will work as if it was gsync with the Nvidia drivers, so either monitor feature works).
If your cpu really is bottlenecking in your particular game though, you'll get all sorts of lag from that that makes your fps target largely irrelevant - the two things are rarely directly related.Â
So upgrading the CPU probably IS your primary goal if this one game is your reason, but I wouldnt put it in terms of the fps you can get, or what the 3060 can do there (it may not get 144fps on high settings but it'll definitely get you more than enough to play smoothly).
The amount of RAM you have is worth looking at too, along with SSD speed. If you're on 8GB or less you might have a ram bottleneck.
Tbh you might do worse than posting on a Tarkov subreddit for more specific advice on specs for that game.
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
Ah yes, I phrased that poorly. I dont really have fps issues other than that. (sorry ill be keeping that short bc reddit deleted my answer).
My main issue is really only the lag and low fps I experience in tarkov.
Ram is 40GB, so no issue I think.
Also do you think the age of the Processor (2019/2020) might be contributing to its low performance?
Other than that, thank you a lot, really helped me out
BenFloydy@reddit
How did you end up with 40Gb RAM. What is that, 2 x16 and 2 x 4?
Have you tried using just the 2 x 16 and dropping to 32Gb? Just wondering if you're not doing yourself any favours mixing ram like that.
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
I got 2x16GB ram and a new ssd for christmas last year. For the ram, i was just going for more = good. I dont really know about the issues that could come with that.
The ssd is as I said very new, but nothing special at all, just an office grade 500gb. Didnt do anything to rule it out specifically.
My cpu works really fine for everything else. I get >100 Fps in just about any other game. I might even get a few bucks for it if I decide to upgrade (dont know if theres even a market for used pc parts, but it doesnt have any issues so i wouldnt throw it away for sure)
And trust me, Tarkov IS that 1% of games thats just so badly coded. My friend who might as well work at Nasa doesnt get over 100 either. Literally only people who play this game for money can. Which sucks, because i have well over 1500h already, never enjoyed another game that much, I dont plan on quitting and I can actively feel how its holding me back from performing my best. As i said, i get around 50 fps (also only when generously looking away from the playable map) and significantly worse performance ain almost any other scenario.
Any other game I would have quit long ago.
And thats why its so important to me, I would be so incredibly happy for a + ~15fps boost, and a stabler, less laggy experience, concidering i might spend some 1000 hours more on tarkov. But i know its not bottlenecking in the general sense
BenFloydy@reddit
Try the ram without the 2x4s as an experiment. The difference between 32 and 40 wont be significant anyway, and the 4s could be slowing the 16s down if they're an older slower spec.
Shouldnt be huge even if it does, but you might gain a nudge.
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
Thanks for all the advice. I feel confident upgrading now without making any grave mistakes.
Ill definetly try without the two 4s since they are indeed on the older side, just to see if I get some faster multi-tasking out of it (like opening the browser while something else is loading), although I wouldnt concider my current loading speeds as particularly bothersome. Same with the SSD, but its good to keep in mind, if i decide to upgrade at some later point.
My last question would be if you know any plattforms where i could try and sell the 3600 cpu, since YOU have convinced me that its still very much fine for people not playing tarkov. Would make it easier for me to commit to buying a new one
BenFloydy@reddit
Also is your SSD fast enough? How have you ruled out that as a source of speed/lag?Â
Low-Blackberry-9065@reddit
5700x3d, nothing better on (or close to) your budget. It's much faster than the 3600 and apparently x3d CPUs are very good for tarkov (have the cpu but not the game so can't confirm).
You'll need to update the bios.
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
And it will work with my crappy RTX 3060?
Also how does updating my bios look, can i just select that in my bios screen or is it more than that?
Low-Blackberry-9065@reddit
I've got my 5700x3d form aliexpress for 135 eur delivered to France (don't count on the warranty if you get one from them too).
It should be less than 200 eur in normal shops in most/all EU countries.
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
Ah, thanks. I only checked amazon like a fool and its ~230€ there 💔
Low-Blackberry-9065@reddit
Yeah, that's a bit much, at that point might as well sell everything you have (current CPU+MB+RAM, not your house lol) add the 230 and get directly an AM5 platform with a 7600/7500f.
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
Isnt it an am5 platform already? Sorry if this is incredibly stupid
Low-Blackberry-9065@reddit
No, your current platform is AM4 as is the 5700X3D (otherwise it wouldn't be compatible with your current MB:) ).
Ryzens from 7000 and up are on AM5.
AusbilderGruenn16@reddit (OP)
Ahh, thank you so much, i coulndt find a clear answer before on google. Good thing i asked too, sometimes when i am doing worse mentally i am making quick not-thought out descisions and this might have saved me some 150 bucks, now that I know. Luckily i am doing fine now

GL!
