Holy Crap, I'd totally forgotten about "Perfection" until today!

My kid came across it at our shared play space and the nostalgia hit me like a ton of bricks.
RLIwannaquit@reddit
your kid's hair looks epic
AiramEsor@reddit (OP)
It is!
Sympathyquiche@reddit
Someone donated one last week to the charity shop I volunteer at. The box was faded, but the game worked fine. It brought back a lot of stressful memories!
lucidguppy@reddit
Should have been called anxiety.
media-and-stuff@reddit
This and operation.
I loved the idea of operation. But the noise annoyed me and triggered my startle response so much I couldn’t play it.
I could at least play perfection. lol even if it made my heart race.
enickma1221@reddit
And they should have named Hungry Hungry Hippos “Capitalism”! lol.
lucidguppy@reddit
The hippos should have top hats and monocles.
splanchnick78@reddit
Lol I kinda do think this was the cause of my anxiety disorder
vanisleone@reddit
That's exactly what I was going to say. My blood pressure went up when I saw the picture
SlumberingSnorelax@reddit
Just because we played “Hurt Locker” as kids? Why? LOL!
Conscious_Deer320@reddit
Also came here to say they spelled "Anxiety" wrong
copyrider@reddit
Anxiety is just part of the fun! Perfection! is the game that just keeps giving… so glad that I’ve got imposter syndrome, anxiety, and a constant fear of failure.
bassman314@reddit
Yes. This picture is causing that....
Geek_Wandering@reddit
Exactly. And Simon should have been called Perfection. One mistake and you get the buzzer.
frostedsun8282@reddit
Just got one for my kid for christmas.
sdujour77@reddit
Fuck that game.
00ezgo@reddit
Kid looks like a Royal Guard
AiramEsor@reddit (OP)
Nah, we're American, he just has a great head of hair. 😂
00ezgo@reddit
Yeah he does. Good for him.
breadmakerquaker@reddit
My heart rate just went up.
Chroniclyironic1986@reddit
Actually, i just bought this game! Well my 8yo “bought” it as a Christmas gift for my 10yo… still around though!
pharaohmaones@reddit
We made a rule that you had to put all the pieces in a coffee cup and pull them at random because it had gotten too easy laying them out upright before. We were clocking 20-30 second games and there just wasn’t any rush anymore.
But it yeah it probably messed us up a little bit
LemonCitron47@reddit
Tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick
Nerdiestlesbian@reddit
I bought one for my son. Keeping the generational trauma alive. Lol
elementalguitars@reddit
They gave us Perfection and Operation as kids and then wonder why so many of us have anxiety disorders.
imthewronggeneration@reddit
They gave us anxiety to perfection.
imthewronggeneration@reddit
Ahhhh, I literally grew up with this. Memory unlocked.
The_Infinite_Carrot@reddit
I had this when I was a kid. My older brother had Screwball Scramble.
iwantmy-2dollars@reddit
Just got a high heart rate alert on my watch
Future-Turtle@reddit
PUT THE PIECES INTO THE SLOT
MAKE THE RIGHT SELECTION
BUT BE QUICK YOU'RE RACING THE CLOCK
POP! GOES PERFECTION!
Nebulous_Fart@reddit
This is permanently seared into my memory yet I can’t remember basic algebra or peoples names; fuck yea.
copyrider@reddit
Hold up… if we look at all the games from our childhood, what were we being trained for?
Operation Perfection! Simon Guess Who? Monopoly Chutes and Ladders Life
Themes: Work harder, be perfect, when it comes to money there’s only one winner, profile people who look different, build a family it’s easy, failure is imminent for all but the ones who break the rules and have money.
Seems like we were playing and beta testing the immersive game called Dystopia - 2020’s Edition.
Donteatthepickles@reddit
Otherwise known as a heart attack.
autricia@reddit
There's actually a two player version of this game that I saw on Amazon, but didn't buy it yet.
YinzerInExile@reddit
I had no fine motor skills (still don't), so I sucked at it (and at Operation, for the same reason)
ThatFalafelGirl@reddit
Oh ho- but what about Superinfection!? A game my brother and i loved so dearly when it broke we buried it in the yard.
WombatRemixer@reddit
CelticSith@reddit
Yep. Perfection, Simon, Operation.. I had forgotten how our games would scream at us when we made a mistake. No wonder I'm a bundle of nerves as an adult
LeperFriend@reddit
My 11 year old gets stressed beyond belief playing this game
fuzzycuffs@reddit
As someone who ended up being diagnosed with chronic anxiety, I may be able to trace the roots to this game.
When my daughter received it as a birthday gift a year or so ago and I heard the timer sound, I started sweating profusely.
bitsy88@reddit
That timer haunts my nightmares
Quiet-Survey27@reddit
This game and Operation 😭
BlackieDad@reddit
My kids got a pizza themed version from my mom and it takes every ounce of restraint I have to not run over and start slapping pieces in as soon as I hear that timer going
hombre_bu@reddit
This was the very beginning of my generalized anxiety disorder
Do_it_My_Way-79@reddit
Great, now I have to call my therapist for another appointment. Thanks.
DrMcJedi@reddit
I have a two player competitive version…my kids always turn off the timer, finish it, and then restart the timer to watch it explode.
EmmalouEsq@reddit
And this is why I need Xanax.
DarkenL1ght@reddit
I can still sing the jingle from the commercial.
lastcallhall@reddit
Ah yes, Anxiety, the children's game.
soopirV@reddit
I got that for my kids a couple Christmases ago. They hated it just as much as I used to, but now I can reliably solve it!
Obi1Kentucky@reddit
Once you memorize the grid this game is super easy. But holy shit at first it’s anxiety inducing
jambr380@reddit
I got this game as a kid and never even came close to completing it. As a perfectionist, it still makes me hate myself to this day.
Clear-Presence-3441@reddit
I have this game for my kids :)
Great for hand mobility/mobility, coordination, shape recognition etc
Only when we get older we realize it's not just a game lol.
AiramEsor@reddit (OP)
Yep, my son starting naming the shapes right away!
LadyBearSword@reddit
My ex husband was impatient at a mental health faculty and they had this game there. The absolutely worst game to have in that environment!!
xprovince@reddit
I ace been trying to find one locally for a while now. I want to see my kids try this game
pie_12th@reddit
My mom got so sick of stepping on those stupid little pieces! Lol good times. Sorry ma!
meadowlark227@reddit
I literally would use this game as a therapist as a tool for clients to be able to practice anxiety-management skills while in session. There was never a goal to win, just to play.
It's one thing to learn/practice skills in a nice, calm, zen environment. Applying those skills in the real world can be so so so much harder.
But, put Perfection on the table, and practice anxiety-management skills "in vivo", while still being in an otherwise safe, calm and supportive environment? Genuinely helpful!
In other words: it is my professional opinion that Perfection is just as anxiety-provoking as things that can happen in real life. If anyone needed validation for Perfection terrifying them, here it is!
TheGreatFallOfChina@reddit
Junior Queen's Guard training :)
My eyes are tired!
GuiltyPiglet5882@reddit
I don't recall ever seeing this game in person. I just remember the commercials and the "Pop goes Perfection" line.
Global-Jury8810@reddit
I hated that game. I’m so glad my parents never bought me that.
Bakingsquared80@reddit
I'm instantly stressed looking at this picture
