What happened to the OptimistUnite and Collapse subreddits debate? There was a post about 6 months ago maybe - there were some good comments and it said it'll happen within a month, but I've either missed it or it didn't happen

To actually provide an answer u/t0nki4at, we've decided to not go ahead with it with r/optimistsunite. We don't really have any other potential subs we're considering but are open to it. One idea was just sticky a debate here and invite potential subs to debate in that, but felt it may create issues with the privacy of our subreddit
So if anyone has ideas for us, do drop us a modmail! (Or comment in this post, but we might not see it)

Think this is pretty wise - OU has quickly descended into bias and mud slinging
nommabelle@reddit
That's a big part of it. We were excited for it until some recent posts on their sub
We recently had a sticky common question where we kinda internally debated, I hope that helped a bit with anyone interested in this
El_Spanberger@reddit
Fully understandable. I joined a few months back as a counterbalance for my own biases. All I've seen lately though is demonisation of those of us who take a more nuanced view than unquestioning belief in humankind's manifest destiny.

That seems for the best to me, honestly. I was a little worried about it becoming an ongoing source of unpleasantness.

I find that subreddit fascinating. It's people who are fully aware of the problem but just can't quite grasp both the severity and the fundamental systemic cause.
Anytime I've had a rummage through there it's posts all with the theme of how technology will save us, just look at how many solar fuckin panels China's made. Basically: '~~Jesus~~ Capitalism take the wheel' which is so absurd I find the whole concept of that sub tragically amusing.
Zestyclose-Ad-9420@reddit
no, its a philosophy movement. if you talk about how billions may die, its your duty as an Optimist to see the good side of that. At least thats what I understood by stalking the sub.
AdAffectionate1216@reddit
r/collapse has successfully predicted 10 out of the the last 0 collapses. It’s insane pro
JoyousGamer@reddit
Yes billions are so going to die this time. /s
Thedogdrinkscoffee@reddit
Billions will die, so millions might live in a primitive society built upon a degraded environmental hellscape where the PFAS and Microplastics still give you cancer at an early age, but there is no more industrialized medicine anymore. <-optimism

Yeah the bias of optimism makes them imagine some kind of return to agrarian living, but with high technology, either as small-scale farmers in some idyllic commune.
But in reality it's this world, but you're filthy, hungry, sick, and traumatized, if you manage to survive.
vinegar@reddit
I think they refuse to believe that billions will die. That’s quitter talk.

Any such debate is pointless. Both sides believe the other is just wrong on the facts and clinging to their position for psychological reasons.
Medothelioma@reddit
it's literally the purest form of screaming at each other as to whether the glass is half full or half empty lmao

I’m totally confused. I belong to r/OptmistsUnite and accepted an invitation to join another related Optimism subreddit. What am I missing here? Have I totally spaced out and am not all there? What is Collapse? Why are so many r/OptimistsUnite posts ‘hair on fire and chicken little’ esque? Help.

Their admin posted something once, they were sick or otherwise incapacitated but promised to get back to it.
I've been discussing there quite a lot, until I got banned for supposedly brigading. This guy got busy using the optimism mostly as neoliberal talking point to promote technological progress, not understanding the slightest argument about overshoot or similar. When I called them out for misinformation about how awesome something was last year, they got rid of me, and not only me, a couple others were also involved in fighting against the misinformation.
I think they just wanted the debate as a virtue signaling token, to be taken more seriously, tried to give themselves the image of a serious debate partner and the discussion would have lended them this credibility. In the meantime they built, in best astroturf manner, other subs for "doomer-dunking", where they'd strawman and "dunk on" any of the positions we discuss here and in climate change, overshoot, veganism and similar subs. Really despicable bunch. Typical neolibs.
Blue__Agave@reddit
Lol what a classic reddit thread, both subreddits have a post about this question and all the comments are about how its not worth debating the other side ahaha.
Its a classic internet echo chamber.
Both sides have some genuinely interesting points yet they both are dismissing eachother as "Unrealistic" and "too coloured by ideology"
obesepengoo@reddit
I wonder as well!

Collapse doesn’t just “happen.” This sounds like the sort of debate fools have over where to cut a fishing hold one three inches of ice
BigJobsBigJobs@reddit
I got way too much collapse in my eyes and ears for that.
