What was the first item you ordered from Amazon and when was it?

I was just procrastinating and decide to see what the first thing I ever ordered from Amazon was.
Turns out I ordered four books on 13 May 2004. The first non-book item that I ordered was on 21 January 2007 when I ordered a "Kensington - Digital FM Transmitter for iPod" for £34.55!
To find your first order click on Search Orders and you should see a drop-down menu letting you go back to the first year you ordered anything.

March 2008, a book, The Dice Man. One of my all-time favourite books

Love that book.
KatelynRose1021@reddit
I remember ordering a set of kids books (for myself) in the year 2000. This was when Amazon only sold books and I loved reading so I was super excited.
I wasn’t old enough to have a debit card so I paid by cheque!
ramapyjamadingdong@reddit
So 2005 and an mp3 player. BUT i had a previous email address that I stopped using around that time and remember buying an olympus digital camera at least 2 years before that.
holly_goes_lightly@reddit
It was in 1996/7 and I heard about this place on the internet to buy books. It was the Beach movie tie in book 😁
buy_me_a_pint@reddit
Amazon, was not the first time I placed an on line order, I used to compare with play
quarky_uk@reddit
Bloody hell, forgot all about play247.com
StubbleWombat@reddit
I think play might have been black star before that.
Boomstick_316@reddit
Blackstar was a different company entirely but I think play.com started as loaded247.com
ubiquitous_uk@reddit
Play was the go-to for dvds.
Luxury_Dressingown@reddit
Yep, was Play for DVDs, Amazon for books. My first orders from Amazon are in 2007 for books for my uni course, first DVD in 2008 was an obscure-ish film also for my uni course that probably wasn't on Play. First order of anything that wasn't a book or a film was 2009 - a case for my iPod Touch.
jamesckelsall@reddit
Play was cheaper for DVDs because it was dodging VAT.
Its change to a marketplace (and subsequent demise) was directly attributed to a change in legislation that forced it to charge VAT...
BrieflyVerbose@reddit
Yeah I used to use Play for a long time before Amazon. I completely forgot about that site. I'm guessing it's not around anymore?!
jamesckelsall@reddit
It was bought by Rakuten for £25m in 2011, with the low amount seemingly suggesting it wasn't quite as profitable as it may have seemed.
They shut it down in 2013 (which coincided with a law change that resulted in them having to start charging VAT - they'd been exempt previously due to being based in the channel islands), and then used the brand to run a marketplace. A couple of years later, they got rid of the play.com branding, changing to Rakuten marketplace, and then closed that down within a year or so.
Rakuten now runs a cashback site in its place.
It seems that, at least by 2011, the company was failing, and rakuten made every attempt possible to save the brand.
Calcio_birra@reddit
Don't forget CD Wow!
No_Application_8698@reddit
I firmly believe that I was responsible for around 20% of all Play’s orders for a few years there, until the VAT/tax loophole (I think??) was closed and they sold to Roku (iirc??), then promptly disappeared.
HardAtWorkISwear@reddit
I used to use Play all the time, but the first thing I bought from Amazon was a power supply for a PC i was building in 2015. I still have the same PC now, it might be time to upgrade...

Yes me too, but I thought that would be a less interesting question.

I'm kind of glad my first order was a book as that was what Amazon was known for at the time but I don't think this is my first order, just the order on an account I created with a personalised domain I had bought.
I expect I purchased something on a now long gone hotmail.co.uk account or maybe even one timed to a work email address that was depressingly proud of at the time as it was a company doing good stuff on the web at the time.

In about 1998, an out of print book about BASE jumping: 'Groundrush' by Simon Jakeman. They didn't have it in stock but I clicked a 'notify me if we find a copy' button, and was amazed a few months later when it showed up. Nowadays there are more used booksellers on there so they show it in stock: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Groundrush-Simon-Jakeman/dp/0224035347

Some time in 2001 I ordered Dido's No Angel but it's marked "Delayed, not yet shipped". However, I do have it and I can't click into the order so I don't know if that's what I got or if it never shipped and I got it elsewhere. Probably a bit late to chase it up now.

I am as it happens now reading the belgariad book series to the now almost 16 year old that I bought the cook book to cook for as a baby. Belgarth the sorcerer was also for her dad and is an offshoot of the series I’m reading her. Seems odd to be reading to a 15 year old but we started the series when she was 11 so we’ve kept it up.

In those days, it was a real risk buying that sort of book in a regular bookshop. You risked being told you were a pervert, and so on and so forth. I find it difficult when people say "Support your local bookstore! Amazon doesn't care!" because if you have ever tried to buy a controversial book you bloody well want a shop that doesn't care. 15th May 2003, a book on carving Celtic love spoons, which I bought for my dad (he did wood carving as a hobby). This was also the year there was a Kellogg's promotion for free books from Amazon (from a limited choice), so I snagged Prey by Michael Crichton, Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, Night Watch by Terry Pratchett, and Sabriel by Garth Nix. Man, I did alright out of that promotion!

It would have been a CD (silver drink-coaster that has recorded music in it) or book (an analogue kindle) back in the 90s.
I lived in Antwerp and it was cheaper to buy from the UK rather than a local shop (Fnac as an example).

Took me 8 years to order a non-book item, December 2007, ordered the game Downfall. I probably "ordered it for my daughter", except she would only have been 2 years old...
In the early 2000's I ordered a LOT of CD's from Amazon.com, so much cheaper than buying imports here.

According to the history on my current Amazon account, the first thing was a secondhand copy of Cannibals by Guy N. Smith in 2006 (some high-class literature there!).
But I'm sure that's not actually the first thing I bought on Amazon.
I had a weird situation on Amazon around that time where I actually had two accounts under the same email address, just with different passwords. It would let me sign into one of two accounts depending on which password I entered. I must have forgotten I had an account and tried to sign up again, used a different pw, and for whatever reason it didn't stop me.
Eventually, they must have noticed and one of the two accounts got deleted, and I think it was the older one, which would have had history going back to the start of the 2000s, I reckon.
