I like that the hangar he departs from is the one of the pair you can see from the A421 (or A428?) not far outside of Milton Keynes. Imagine driving along one day, seeing this thing come out and thinking 'what the fuck?' then forgetting all about it until a few months later and seeing it on Top Gear with James May piloting it

This is one of my favorites, the desperation in his voice while talking with air traffic control is hilarious.

Was that bit real? Did he really drift into an active airfield?
Homeless_Nomad@reddit
No, ATC is not responding in procedural ways to either the mayday call or the airspace violation. National aviation regulators were likely aware of this trip and its exact course well in advance, there is likely some way to control the balloon, and legitimate interference with actual air traffic would have meant arrests of either James, the producers/BBC executives, or both.
You do not fuck around with aviation regulation. Nobody's letting an idiot in a balloon potentially endanger the lives of hundreds of people on commercial airliners in the most critical phase of flight, and ATC and law enforcement are not going to be that nonchalant if said idiot did so anyway.

There was an actual pilot in the other seat. They were just very careful about not showing it.

entire bit is scripted
Lonetrek@reddit
As James put it he would have received a 'Colossal aviation bollocking' that would have made the news. If you observe at 4:38 the runway the KLM aircraft is on is inactive/out of service as marked with the X.

I mean, it was sold as real, the way everything unfolded didn't seem scripted, they didn't show any of the footage when the authorities approached him but I know someone will probably tell me they called the airport ahead of time, blah blah.
