Mark and Jack deliver another in-depth review, this time focusing on the Rivian R1S Gen 2. They cover everything from the efficiency and audio quality to the real-world usability of this electric SUV. It's refreshing to see such a balanced take on both its strengths and weaknesses.
hehechibby@reddit
Sucks to hear about the sound system; it's rated fairly low on DM Sound as well that reviews vehicle audio systems
FNA_Couster@reddit
Lmao that thing is $100k and only has 12 speakers? That's less than some base model Fords
TrptJim@reddit
Quantity doesn't equal quality. The amount of speakers doesn't matter nearly so much as the quality of each speaker.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Really happy geese does objective audio reviews, i always thought this sound system was a bit wack but every owner glazed it up high hell and back, so good to have some numbers
DaytonaRS5@reddit
Most of the brands got bought up, Harmon Kardon is Samsung, Harmon owns B&O. It’s just cheap speakers with big brand names on. Took a B&O speaker out my car and it’s a $3 paper come you’d get from AliExpress
hi_im_bored13@reddit
and everyone they don’t own, they just license. You still got done independents out there (burmester, tesla, els) but it’s not great
but harman isn’t necessarily bad, if you pay up they make a great system, b&w in the ix and xc90 is all them, great work, you have to pay to play though
KobeBean@reddit
The B&W in BMWs is so good that it’s a shame it’s so rare on non-M X5s, to the point where the only reason I got the X7 instead is that they are a little easier to find with the option..
stav_and_nick@reddit
Honestly, even the B&O systems in the S/XC60 are phenomenal. Imo a required option
hi_im_bored13@reddit
The b&o in the audis and upper trims are great, i have one in my gle, hands down one of my favorite sound systems of all time
but the system in the ford and lamborghinis are atrocious, which is kinda the issue, brand means nothing anymore.
DaytonaRS5@reddit
They were great, once my gen got made they cheaped out. I ripped them all out and replaced them with arum cantus and audisom prima. What do Tesla use? They have fantastic sound systems.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
The original model s was done up by a little company called S1NN. Whats unique there is being a new project altogether, the sound engineers had quite a bit of say in the fundamental design of the car as well, and unlike a lot of harman & competitor products which use artificial surround, that system was purely stereo. Ironically that company was then bought up by harman in '14 lol.
The current sound systems are allegedly designed in-house, some say they had B&O engineers do a good bit of it (not harman, actual olufsen), others say they still consult with s1nn, all we know is its still a pretty solid sound system, maybe not quite as good as my old model s, but definitely a solid improvement over the rivian and comparable if not better than the i5 b&w
Issue with a lot of manufacturers is they go to harman or OEM with strict speaker placements and no leeway in interior design much less chassis design, these manufacturers don't realize how important that is to proper sound design, I think the biggest example of this is the new LX with the mark levinson, lexus doesn't cheap out on higher tier models, the speakers themselves and amplification is solid, its just that speaker placement is horrible, they try to fix that in software, it results in this weird echo-y mess.
Where's with tesla they had a lot more leeway in the design, e.g. they specified the thickness of the sheet metal in the doors to prevent resonance, and then adjusted the mounting of the rest of the door components in turn, at that time you used to never see that level of design with a traditional manufacturer.
But over time it is happening more and more often - XC90, iX, mercedes 4D, rolls, the sound engineers have had a part in designing the interior and parts of the car and you can immediately tell by the speaker placement, material choices, and resulting sound.
DaytonaRS5@reddit
Really appreciate that response, good to learn. Of course Harmon scooped them up lol
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Yeah no problem, I only know as much because I worked at harman for a good while because my own company got scooped up lol. but people hate on them too much imho, people should hate on the manufacturers more.
You saw it yourself, audi b&o systems used to be fantastic, the system in the old w12 A8L was top notch, even post-harman the "new" a8 was pretty solid though not quite as good as the bowers, nowhere near as bad as some of the new audi products.
DaytonaRS5@reddit
That makes sense! Thanks for the background too, everyone’s an expert on here about something from a YouTube video they watched once usually. Yeah, new Audi is such a shame. Can’t see them existing in the EV era with VW and Porsche on the other ends.
ecleipsis@reddit
Rivian, if you are reading this please offer different front end options. The Dyson fan headlights are not for everyone. Thanks.
SavageGooseJack@reddit
Rivian’s PR and engineering team was refreshingly open and very passionate about their product. If you love these things you should be happy to know that the team behind them seem like great people.
daxelkurtz@reddit
Hey /u/SavageGooseJack - Maybe this is just a me thing, but I'd be so interested for you take the rigorous testing you do for audio systems etc and bring it to EV heat-pump efficiency. Like, if you just haaaaappened to be doing an EV SUV group test, you could line them all up on a balmy January morning, set them all to 75F, walk away for an hour, then check battery levels? Anyway greetings from Maine where it is cold as hellballs, thank you for all the work you do.
Ok-Response-839@reddit
I'm nitpicking but this would be an insulation efficiency test rather than a heat pump efficiency test. Vehicles with double glazing will have a huge advantage over those that don't.
daxelkurtz@reddit
Good point :)
niftyjack@reddit
Based on how people talk about Rivian they seem to get an extra glaze
darkmeatnipples@reddit
Took you guys long enough. Gawl... I'm thrilled to finally see you guys in a Rivian.
Thecallofrhino@reddit
Did you guys ever go back and test a Gen1 R1S/T for comparison?
Juicyjackson@reddit
Excited to see the R3.
Might be the 2nd R3 i have bought.
KeyboardGunner@reddit (OP)
Likewise. But it's pretty far off. The latest estimates put deliveries at Q4 2028.
Mimical@reddit
Perfect.
I'll have time to save up my downpayment of $12.76 after my country gets dumpstered by a trade war and we get laid off via a very empathetic and sad text message from our CEO in the Bahamas.
thejetssuckbigtime@reddit
Have you tried becoming AI? Cmon people you gotta pivot
aprtur@reddit
Is that along the lines of becoming one of those comment bots? That seems like a relaxing way to spend time - telling everyone they look nice and you're just out there to become friends.....or something

Vivid_Werewolf_7091@reddit
I’m hoping for $14.39 myself
Mimical@reddit
Damn, you might be able to afford the optional amber LED.
Vivid_Werewolf_7091@reddit
If my CEO says jump, I do. If they say you need amber light, i listen
stupidzoidberg@reddit
I want an R2, that's the sweet spot IMO.
beamdriver@reddit
I like the R2. Looks just about the right size for a family car for me.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
No CarPlay. Seems great otherwise, but that eliminates it for me
Sixteen-Cylinders@reddit
I always liked Rivian. The Gen 2 R1S seems like a decent improvement but I still fear for the long term future of this company. They need to R2 and R3 on the market as fast as possible.
stav_and_nick@reddit
Do they? Call me a cynic, but if they've been struggling to rain in cost for a vehicle with a $70k MSRP, how much are they going to struggle with a vehicle half that price?
The R3X is the hot hatchback (?) VW should be making though. Come to think of it, it's kinda funny that 3 companies are making the electric Golf we deserve, and none of them are VW
rugbyj@reddit
I won't, because everything you've said is correct. But I would say the migration from startup to full blown production has been surmounted. It's not the end of the road by all means but there's a lot of cost in setup/learning and building the basics out.
That's me being hopeful. They've got a lot of work to get done to become profitable. But I've liked what they've put out since day one and I'd hope they survive into shipping these to the UK one day because they seem sick.
retroPencil@reddit
Rein in*
stav_and_nick@reddit
don't bully me I'll cum
retroPencil@reddit
See, this works on many levels. Rein is typically used on beasts of burden, like a bull or a horse. Bullying, rein, etc. I am indeed bullying OP by correcting their spelling. With respective to the video's title, cumming is an uphill battle for some individuals.
Good job with your quip. A+
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Instead, they've been making it rain.
epsiblivion@reddit
what 3 companies? the ioniq 5/ev6 is kind of a weird cuv/hatch. the r3 is a cuv.
stav_and_nick@reddit
I'd say the Ioniq 5 counts, as well as the Volvo EX30 (especially the dual motor with its insane 400+ HP), then I kinda count the R3X. I guess if you want to count stuff that won't come to north america you can also throw in the MG4 whatever they call the hot version, plus the BYD seal GT
Honestly, after driving the EX30, I was just baffled. It literally felt like an EV GTI. So why the hell is Volvo making it?
epsiblivion@reddit
vw showed the prototype id.gti which may or may not make it to production in 2028. they're definitely behind
ZeroWashu@reddit
The best part is the need to sell around 100k a QUARTER just to pay for running the company and of course those have to sell at a profit. They are burning a billion just running the place per quarter.
Sixteen-Cylinders@reddit
Production scalability would do them many favors.
Sixteen-Cylinders@reddit
Production scalability would do them many favors.
opportunptr@reddit
VW did invest $5.8B into Rivian last fall, at least they’ll be able to say they helped a bit with this one.
matmanx1@reddit
I genuinely like Rivian's designs and would love to have the opportunity to try one out someday. Their current offerings are out of my price range (and I am quite satisfied with my Ioniq 5 daily driver) but I am hopeful that they will survive and be able to hit more mass market prices in the future.
Thanks for the review, Mark and Jack!
wave_action@reddit
I thought the piece about comparing charging percentages on difference sized batteries kind of summed up some of the issues with EV's. Having had multiple EV's of the years I get the quick and dirty math of using percentages. But saying it will take 15 hrs to reach 100% compared to 12 on the smaller battery and "to be aware" of that is a bit misleading. They both will have the same amount of actual charge over that same time, its just that the bigger battery has more capacity.
FlourCity@reddit
Plus, how often are people getting home late at night with 20%, and needing a full 100% charge the next morning?
banelingsbanelings@reddit
Honestly. Videos like this are a good example why engineers and journalists shouldn't be friends/friendly with eachother and I personally am not realy found of how frequent these kind of videos reapppear on the geese's channel.
Given the amount of criticism the video still carries such a positive undertone. It sounds like "No realy guys, Raid Shadowlegends will be a great game post over air updates."
Whereas their Kia (Ioniq 5 version)GT was much more pogniant and on the button.
elinyera@reddit
Maybe you can't handle positivism? They are very friendly with Mazda people and they trashed the CX90.
KSoMA@reddit
I think their opinions on EVs have brightened a decent bit since they got the Lucid long termer and got more of a chance to actually experience life with one. Mark even leased an Ioniq5 with his own money recently since it was like sub $300 a month i think.
RangerRekt@reddit
The uphill battle… to profitable sales?
dont_wear_a_C@reddit
"business in the business of making money" -more at 5
RangerRekt@reddit
Rivian loses money with every vehicle they sell. My point is that they are struggling mightily with making money.
“Rivian lost around $39,130 per vehicle in Q3 [of 2024], up from $32,700 per vehicle in the second quarter. In Q1, Rivian lost more than $38,700 per vehicle delivered”.

Upset_Exit_7851@reddit
These guys hate EVs so their opinion is wasted on my ears
GoRawr@reddit
I bought a R1t (gen 1 2022, 27k miles) last week. Very enjoyable.
natesully33@reddit
I'm excited for the Rivian vs. Scout comparisons in the future. I like Rivian vehicles, but I also want something a bit less techy and more physical. I'm also not crazy about how they did the no-carplay yes-subscriptions thing a lot of companies are doing, it's not just whether I can use my phone on the screen that bothers me - it's the philosophy of the thing, giving the user what they want versus what you think or demand they want. Heh, and yes I'm well aware one of my current vehicles is far worse when it comes to company philosophical stuff haha.
Regardless the R2, if it pans out, is on the short list for replacing my Y when it's finally time.
Drzhivago138@reddit
It...looks the same?
LoPanDidNothingWrong@reddit
I really liked the R1 gen 1 and still have a deposit sitting with them. I’ll change out the stereo if need be.
But honestly CarPlay and Android Auto. Like I refuse to be held hostage if/when they decide to monetize basic functionality because their revenue numbers aren’t good enough one quarter.
If they think their system is better, then there is no problem allowing competition.
As it is, I will most likely spend my speculative startup cat money on a Lucid Gravity if we don’t just fold and buy another Sienna.
daxelkurtz@reddit
Been waiting on this review a long time. "Offroad EV SUV" is my ideal use case for boondocking in the mountains with my wife's husband's Pilates instructor. In 3 years and 50% depreciation, maybe this will be a washing machine we can all get stuck in.
