For me it was Judas Priest in 1984 for the "Defenders of the Faith" tour. The Cow Palace in San Francisco. Went with a couple of friends my age. I was 13. It was amazing 🤘🔥

Greg Kihn, J. Giles Band, Rolling Stones Tattoo You, Kingdome Oct 14, 1981. Had to miss the encore because we had HS marching band practice, I remember a column of smoke rising from the center of the Kingdome as we drove away. The band director (and our parents I guess) go to the concert but the deal was we had to run through the dress rehearsal, so we were on the field by midnight. 😂

Sabbath w/ VH opening. MSG. 1978.
No one knew who the opening band was.
The opening band blew the roof off the Garden, and when Sabbath came onstage finally, someone threw a beer bottle at them. So I witnessed the change of guard. I came to see Sabbath, but the entire place went nuts for VH. It was like watching everyone decide at once, "nah, this is the band."
xlperro@reddit
Saw Metallica open for Ozzy... Same kind of changing of the guard. Metallica was high energy from the get go. Ozzy was fucked up and barely played over an hour.

Maybe the Gen-X label is too wide. I was still in diapers in 78. A lot of people here weren't born yet.
Tholian_Bed@reddit
Are you being serious?
Do you know how generations work? Of course a lot weren't born yet.
I swear, late series gen x. It's like they think being gen x = you watched MTV from your crib. That is not what this generation is only about, friend. Some of us were getting laid when MTV came out.
OPisabundleofstix@reddit
Yeah which is why I said the label is too wide. We're clearly from different generations.
fuckfredflintstone@reddit
Also saw the same show. Idk about not knowing the opening act. We were partying w/that debut album for months before the show. We loved Sabbath, but knew it was their farewell tour, and by that point, they were pretty burnt out. I remember being stoked to see VH. What you are 100% correct about is VH blowing the roof off The Garden. To this day when asked about it, Ozzy always says w/great affection that ”those fuckers blew us off the stage every night!” IMO, an incredible six album run. Not a Hagar fan at all.

The Cure Wish Tour 1992 CWMP The Woodlands, Texas 16 yrs. old 1st boyfriend I bought both of our tickets boyfriend's older brother + female friend (I will always love her & I will never forget her.) were our chaperones. They had bought seat tickets earlier, and we got our lawn tickets later, but they snuck us next to their seats. Security didn't notice or care, nothing was said. Had a night that exceeded my wildest imagination. Life changing. Standing in awe, no emotion on my face, except tears streaming down. My emotions were raw, swimming inside haunting my lonely mind. My 16 year old feelings were spinning madly at the sight of The Cure. They were playing live before my innocent, unbelieving, locked in a surreal space in time transfixation. Everything else disappeared. The roaring audience, clapping, whistling, screaming, everything. It was the simplistic tunnel vision that treated my senses fully to the 1st in 4 true The Cure experiences.

Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd tribute band. This was followed by Pink Floyd tour in '92. I grew up by a campsite that had music festivals, so we saw a bunch of underground bands. As the camp ground grew in popularity, they got bigger acts. I met Tommy Chong and his family when they came through. I was able to get my dad's "Up in Smoke" vinyl album signed!

Pink Floyd didn’t tour in ‘92. The Delicate Sound of Thunder tour (supporting the Momentary Lapse of Reason album) ran from 1987 through 1989. The Pulse tour (supporting the Division Bell) ran from the end of March 1994 to the end of October, 1994. I saw them in 1994

I think it was Benny Mardones at a stadium in Syracuse. It was summer, either 1986 or 87. I think it was 86. I had shots bought for me all night. I missed the next day of work but they were informed. It was a great show. I'm 55 and still givin'er.

Saw that tour, in Worcester, MA! When I tell people that the first time I saw Metallica was as an opening band, on Master of Puppets, with Cliff playing, they're usually pretty surprised since a lot of people didn't know of them until ~~Smell the Glove~~ The Black Album came out
No-Access-2790@reddit
The number of kids in leather jackets hoofing it west on the shoulder of Rt. 72/Higgins Road to see them still sticks out in my mind. There must have been 100 teenagers in ripped jeans and white high tops making that pilgrimage. Ozzy was Ozzy, obviously. But Metallica was our Beatles.
mbadolato@reddit
I got to meet them and was standing on the side of the stage next to the sound engineer (which meant the guys kept coming over to talk to him) during their set on the Monsters of Rock tour. The best part was the next day when my phone rang and when I said hello, the response I got was "WHAT THE F*** WERE YOU DOING ON METALLICA'S STAGE!?!?!?" Friends saw me and that made it ohhhh so much better 🤣

To boot: we had to stand outside Flipside Records the whole night before to get tickets when they went on sale. Which we knew about from a poster at the records store. There were easily 200 kids standing in line and sleeping on the flower beds of the outdoor mall where the record store was.

Van Halen 1984 tour. I was 13. Cow Palace, SF. Mix was terrible, keyboards WAAYYY too loud, Dave was drunk off his gourd, Eddie was pissed off. Floor was packed to the rafters, I was stuck next to my older brother to my left and a chick with gigantic DDD tits on the right. The crowd would move and I got crushed into them over and over. Does it count if I won the tickets?
Family Values Tour 2001. Yeah, I was a bit of a late bloomer for concerts...was 24 then. Won the tickets of a local radio station for being caller 9, got tickets on the floor. Deadsy, Static X, Linkin Park, Staind, and Stone Temple Pilots. Awesome show. And before the show, I was part of a group that got to go backstage and do a "meet and greet" with some of the band members...got to meet with Static X, some of the guys from LP, and Staind. Staind had us line up and they went down the line signing stuff for us...no more than 2 items per person.
First one I actually purchased tickets was four years later...Velvet Revolver.

It was wild, back then there used to be bands that were all about the light show. They used a shit ton of fireworks for each concert. Van Halen beat their shows with electricity. DLR was doing the trampoline tricks and EVH was at his prime. I still remember they closed with On Fire.

All bands staying at hotels surrounding Arrowhead Stadium, and the night before the concert fans literally swarmed the hotels. Saw furniture being thrown out of windows, and every other cliche things you come to expect from this genre in the 80’s.

I was 13 in June 1984 and was tagging along with my older brother when he went to Ticketron to get Grateful Dead tickets. My parents were away, so he was in charge and I asked if I could go to the show. He said if I bought my own ticket I could go. Luckily I had enough on me and so I scored some outside lawn seats. It was the most insane time ever. Tripping Deadheads everywhere , rain with thunder and lightning, getting lost in the crowd. Even other Dead shows were nothing quite like that one.

We arrived super early, and before the show a guy stood up on a chair in the orchestra section and started stabbing himself several times in the abdomen, looking up at the audience and beckoning for applause. 🫣 It took about a half dozen security guards to beat him down with folding chairs to get him to stop.

TL;DR
Age 16. My first concert. One hell of a show!
The long version:
My buddy and I were going to go with his older brother. This was crucial because it was over an hour drive away, and my first concert. Without older bro, my mom never would have given me permission. So, I bought my ticket. It was General Admission. Then my buddy's brother says he's not going. I tell my buddy I'm still going - even though now I have to sneak there. He wusses out and doesn't buy a ticket because he doesn't think I'll really go.
The day of the concert arrives, I leave a message for my mom at work that I am staying at another friend's house, and I hit the road right after school. I'm there hours early, just hanging out in line. I'd only become a "true" metal head in the last few months, and I was also a fairly shy/uncertain kid. There is aa group of older (like older teens or 20-somethings) headbangers in line in front of me. Two hot rocker babes and what I presume to be their boyfriends.
Through chatting, laughing, and them sharing their spiked cans of soda, they basically end up adopting me. One of the girls has this "I love rock and roll" sticker stuck to the ass of her denim skirt, but it keeps peeling loose. One dude keeps smoothing it back down. Eventually I'm in on the smoothing it down, and in heaven. I am touching the butt of this hot chick!
Eventually the doors open, and we are let into the arena, and those of us who want to be on the floor are allowed to go sit on the floor, about 30 yards back from the railing in front of the stage. Then the announcement comes, and we charge forward as a mob. Our little group is front and center, with the three guys making a bit of a barrier to keep the crowd from crushing the ladies.
The concert starts. There's this (from my vantage point) tall, skinny dude with spandex and suspenders going over his bare nipples slither in front me. There's a hairy beast of a guy shredding on guitar to off to my side. IT. WAS. GLORIOUS.
The crush of the crowd becomes too much for the girls, and I see my first real female anatomy as they are lifted up and over the rail, and Sticker Girl's legs part right in front of my face. I am in awe over that brief glimpse. A song or two later, I hear my name being called, and girl I know from Catholic youth group is in the crowd behind me. She is also being crushed, and we help her up and over (no illicit views).
Guns N' Roses finishes their set and I head toward the concession are to get a T-Shirt and a drink. As I am walking off the floor, I hear my name called again. This time from a male voice in the seats up above me. It is my friend's brother who decided to go to the concert after all. Asshole.
I watch Mötley Crüe from the stands, and Tommy Lee's amazing rotating drum cage is something from another world. The show blows me away. This has been a night to remember. But, the show must end, and it does. As I head for the exits I run into my adopted rock and roll family again. When the girls went over the railing they ended up with an invite to go party with the bands. One of the dude snagged a pack of cigarettes that purportedly fell from Tommy's drum rig. He gives me one of the cigarettes and Mötley Crüe guitar pick. They invite to go party with them at the band's hotel.
I'm a responsible kid, so I tell them I'll grab my car and drive to where they are parked and follow them. I've never tried to leave an event with thousands of people before. It is like an hour before I can get to their side of the parking lot, and of course they are gone. Probably for the best. I'd have been in over my head.
I make the hour and half drive back to my Orlando suburb, and head for home. The lights are still on. My dad is still awake watching television. Nope. Not walking into that. I'd be dead. I head to a 24-hour diner around the corner. A girl I know from school is working, and serves me. I'm half deaf from the concert and blasting music all the way home, but we talk (maybe too loudly) about the concert.
I head back to the house. The lights are off. The coast is clear. I sneak in and go to bed. It's Thanksgiving morning and I have to work in seven hours, but I am overflowing with delight.
Three or four hours later my mother gets up early to start cooking the turkey. She wakes me up and demands to know where I was all night, because she never got the message about staying at a friend's house.
"I got back town around..." I mumble in my sleep deprived state.
"Back to town?!? Back to town?!?" she yells, "You went to that G** Damn concert, didn't you?"

I was never a person to spend money to go see a concert. I got to see Billy Joel for free through the USO, I spent $50 for my self and my soon to be wife to see Oleander at a "pub".
Then my wife and I had kids, and there were the Wiggles. Spent money to take the kids (they're 23 now) to see them at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney. Then we found ourselves in Missouri and they were playing in Kansas City, so again spent more money to go see them.
The first proper (adult, not child) concert I ever spent money on was to go see the Madden Brothers at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney, this was about 9 or 10 years ago.
Considering the price of tickets for bands nowadays, I doubt I'll ever see another band live (general admission Metallica tickets were over $600).

People were just starting to get to know who they were, there were about 350 or so people there. It was great. Met the band, of which I was like "meh" three older guys from Ireland. They were great though, of course. Bono stage dived us, almost landed on me. He stopped doing that soon after, the crowds got too big obviously.

There's a yearly fair nearby that gets some reasonably popular artists to perform. As a teen at the time, the opportunity to see Weird Al outside of watching the "Amish Paradise" video on MTV was too good to pass up.
There was a short intermission halfway through the concert. Al came running back onto the stage wearing his "Fat" suit!

Grateful Dead Charlotte Fall ‘89. Bought 2 tickets and traded one for a ride. Friends had recently been in trouble and mom didn’t want me to go (6 hour drive or so). Told her I was going one way or the other (I was 14 almost 15). Compromise was I went to church, and she’d drive me to Charlotte. Left from church parking lot and drove straight to the venue lot. Dropped Sid as we pulled in. Had no idea where she was staying or where my friends were. They didn’t show up to our seats. Interesting first set as I sat alone during my first Dead show while watching Jerry melt into a lizard. Thankfully found my friends walking through concourse at set break. Got a ride to hotel and mom happened to get a room at the same spot. My future wife was with my friends and I hung out in their room most of the evening. Within a year we were dating.

We got the absolute shit beaten out of us in the slam pit and we ended up bruised and beaten and then the two of us ended up getting arrested for shoplifting like 5 days later, and the cops didn't know what to do with us because we were just two kids, so they put us in the lunchroom at the sheriff station, and somebody actually came and asked us if somebody was abusing us because we were covered in bruises and cuts. We told her that we were beaten up at the Ramones concert a couple of nights before, and they looked at us like we were completely insane.

He did something there that blew my mind.
While performing a song, he caught eyes with a woman in the audience. To her surprise, Bowie brought her up on stage without missing a beat in his vocals. He's walking around her, she's standing there completely taken in the moment then holy shit, Bowie walked up to her, yanked at the skirt of the woman's dress and....
Turned it into a giant backdrop to use to project lights and lasers on. Like OMG, did he just take her dress and do that!
And he damn sure did because of course, that woman was part of the show.

Once they give you money, it's your own money!
Anyway... I used some of that money to go to a concert at the neighbourhood stadium: JGeils, ZZTop, Skynyrd, Marshal Tucker. The first two performed, and it was great!

Pennywise and Bad Religion on the warped tour in the 90s. Saw the show in Cincinnati, OH and hit Kings Island for some roller coasters during the same weekend. Stayed in a cheap motel, went to a giant liquor store and got some Brass Monkey just because it was there... Good Times.

Openers were George Thorougood and the Destroyers, and The J. Girls Band, who we thought were so good we went to see them when they had their own tour a month later, and their opener was a fresh faced young U2, probably the first time they ever came to the US.
