Should I upgrade from my GTX 1070 to RTX 5070?

Hey guys should I upgrade my gtx1070 to the new rtx5070 that’s coming out? I’ve had my pc for about 5 years now and the 1070 still runs games great at decent fps for different games. Hopefully it won’t be like the 30 series drop where scalpers take them all 😭
Piotr_Barcz@reddit
If the 1070 does what you want it to do then don't bother. However if you're going to upgrade from there but don't want to break the bank then the age old standard for Nvidia cards for the last 5 years has been the 3060 ti. I got my Founders Edition model off of eBay preowned and barely used for 280 bucks and it runs like a champ!
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Hmmm I’ve heard great things about the 30 series I’ll weigh my options out cause you are right good savings and still does very well in games
Piotr_Barcz@reddit
It can run Helldivers at 4K with DLSS enabled on the higher quality setting just fine, and Helldivers in general runs like garbage, it's like Minecraft just an actual game and not a platform everyone mods to run worse XD
911NationalTragedy@reddit
It will be big for sure. Recently upgraded from 1070 to used 3080, 1070 was only showing glaring weakness for games such as Alan Wake 2 etc. But be careful tho now i have tasted the power and developed appetite for it, and will be buying 5090.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Definitely huge upgrade and ayyy congrats happy for you! 5090 goes crazy 😳
911NationalTragedy@reddit
Just be careful, once the greed train starts, you cannot stop the hunger for power.
GonstroCZ@reddit
> the 1070 still runs games great at decent fps for different games.
dont upgrade then
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
I run most games at lowest settings around 120-150FPS with a 144HZ monitor which is alright but the FPS games I play I’d like to gain more FPS so I could better match my monitor consistently I appreciate your feedback 🙏
kuzared@reddit
You can upgrade, you’ll be getting better FPS at better graphics settings. But I’m guessing you’ll also be very CPU limited given the age of your PC. So - what CPU are you running?
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Ryzen 5 3600x
GonstroCZ@reddit
how about your RAM and motherboard? you could upgrade to Ryzen 5700x3D which is beast gaming CPU
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB and MsiB450 gaming pro carbon max WiFi atx am4
GonstroCZ@reddit
you can upgrade the CPU, but you need to do BIOS update first... and 16gb is rather minimum than recommended nowadays, so if it has decent speed and latency, you can (try to) get the same kit and upgrade to 32 gigs in total
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Okay gotcha I mean it’s not 16gb it’s 2 sticks of ram so that should be 32gb right? And I think it runs fine but I’ll upgrade if needed
GonstroCZ@reddit
> Okay gotcha I mean it’s not 16gb it’s 2 sticks of ram so that should be 32gb right?
dont know what do you mean?
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
You can have a maximum of 64gb of ram with 4 sticks in total right? So I have 2 sticks of 16gb ram so 16gb + 16gb = 32 GB? That’s how it works yeah? I think, correct me if I’m wrong
GonstroCZ@reddit
ahh yes, 32gb is plenty of RAM
kuzared@reddit
Yes, 2 sticks of 16 GB means you have 32 GB - task manager will show the entire amount.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Awesome thank you that’s what I thought haha
soccerguys14@reddit
My question is what’s his definition of decent fps. But I guess that doesn’t matter if it’s acceptable to OP
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
120-150FPS with a 144HZ monitor so I’m not consistently getting enough to match my monitor thinking of upgrading, thank you for replying 🙏
GonstroCZ@reddit
yea depends on a person, I have a friend who is happy more than enough with 60fps and he says he doesnt want anything higher, that he is happy now
cabaq@reddit
Unless he prefers great fps.
GonstroCZ@reddit
And where does OP say that? "runs games great at decent fps" sounds like he is happy to me
cabaq@reddit
Why on earth would he even ask for an upgrade then? Think a little.
raydialseeker@reddit
What PCIE version is your motherboard ? I reckon it's PCIE 3.0 which might have a bad effect on 50 series performance.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
msi B450 motherboard and yeah it’s 3.0 will that not work with 5070?
raydialseeker@reddit
5070 is gonna be PCIE 5.0. that'd mean that it'll have to run at PCIE 5.0x4. That might be quite problematic. Your best bet would be to get a used 4070ti super around the same price once the 5070 is out.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
If I upgraded to a new motherboard with PCIE 4.0 would that still work or do I need a PCIE 5.0 motherboard?
raydialseeker@reddit
I wouldn't suggest that unless the cost of the upgrade is very low. Which cpu do you have btw ? I'd suggest getting a 5700x3d if you're on an older am4 chip 1st. Then upgrade the GPU to any 40 series card(used 4070ti super and 4080 prices are plummeting where I live). The 5070 is a compromised card at just 12gb of vram. You'd be much better off with a 4070ti super + 5700x3d than upgrading the motherboard and getting a 5070
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Hmm okay I guess if 4070ti is better and has more vram I could just get that instead and check out a new cpu. I currently have the ryzen 5 3600x cpu
raydialseeker@reddit
Okay please upgrade your cpu 1st. The 5700x3d is dirt cheap right now $135 alibaba, check your regions retailers too and would be a MASSIVE upgrade for you(over double the fps in many games, especially games like cs2, msfs, acc). You can probably sell your 3600x for $50. That's $85 to double your fps. Absolute no brainer. Also go for 32gb of ram if you're currently at 16. Another cheap super nice upgrade.
The 4070ti super comes with 16gb. The 4070ti has the same limitation of 12gb vram like the 5070.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Gotcha okay I’ll check it out and alibaba is a scam no? Or is it actually legit?
raydialseeker@reddit
It's legit, just look up 5700x3d alibaba reddit. There are thousands of people who bought one.
I got mine from newegg in the us. $180 for 5700x3d + 32gb ram
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Also how much is the 4070ti super where you live cause I’m seeing $600+ 😳
raydialseeker@reddit
Used ? They've dropped to around $550 and are dropping fast.
PreviousAssistant367@reddit
Can your CPU handle that upgrade?
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
I hope so lmk if I should upgrade to a better cpu I currently have a ryzen 5 3600x with a EVGA supernova 750 G5
PreviousAssistant367@reddit
Yeah, Ryzen 7 5700x3d.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Here's my current PC build except I added a 4070 to see what my PC could handle. I don't really understand if there's anything wrong but I see it says that everything compatible?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YMLFXR
RudyMuthaluva@reddit
The problem with the jump is you may also need a new cpu to accommodate the new gpu. A new psu, new fans. Cooling etc. it’s not as simple as just pulling out the gpu and putting in a new one.
I just upgraded mine to a 3050 and found some of these issues
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Ahh gotcha I’ll figure out my specs and see if they do alright well seeee
BlightlingJewel@reddit
Are you on am4? Then you can also buy a 5700x3d and 32gb ram and you are good for the next couple of years
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
I’m on MSI b450m motherboard, ryzen 5 3600x, and an evga supernova 750 g5 psu, should I upgrade?
BlightlingJewel@reddit
Yes I had the same cpu before and got a real fps boost in cpu heavy games like 2x fps when I got the 5800x3d. You can also wait a few days to look at the 9070(xt) price/performance and choose it the new and or NVIDIA card fits your needs better
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Ahh okay gotcha maybe I will wait, just don’t want it all scalped but people been saying it probably won’t but we’ll see 🤷♂️
Zymoria21@reddit
Don’t listen to amd shills. Nvidia cards are far superior and have a long track record of being the best. Yes an upgrade to the nvidia 5000 series will do wonders for your performance. Just make sure you arnt bottlenecked by your cpu.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Gotchaa true true nvidia been on top hahaha I do have a ryzen 5 3600x, evga supernova 750 g5 psu, and msi b450m motherboard will these specs do or upgrades needed??
Natural_Sundae2110@reddit
Get the 7800xt once the 9000 series are announced. Should suit all set of games comfortably.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Hmm I’ll think about it, I’ve been more of a fan of nvidia for awhile now but thank you for the input I’ll check my options out!
Archernar@reddit
Scalpers came for every single card since the 30 series, it's just that some of the 40 series sold pretty poorly at times. Probably not gonna happen with 50 series though, considering the hype around them.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Okay gotcha hopefully not we can only wait and see 🙏
GrumpyKitten514@reddit
if youre happy, dont upgrade.
if you want better fps in pretty much any game then i would upgrade.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Yeahhh looking like I’ll be upgrading just gotta make sure my other pc parts will work with it and not bottleneck 💀
OhMelbourne@reddit
I think availability won’t be as shit as peak COVID and peak mining era. Only upgrade if you need the new features, I was still happily rocking my 1080 until I was forced to upgrade to newer card that is supported by PSVR2 so I can play on VR. Otherwise save your money and spend more on buying games.
Acceptable_Cup_2901@reddit
idk about the availability thing considering amd isnt releasing any higher tier products this gen. the b580 release was scalped pretty heavily and thats intel with an even lower marketshare than amd. i wouldnt guarantee availability for anyone upon release after 1st or second restock maybe.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Hopefully I’ll be able to get the 5070 we’ll see what happens this 31st 🙏
Acceptable_Cup_2901@reddit
hopefully but i wouldnt count on it i had a hard enough time getting my 7900xtx mag air lol
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Thanks for replying! I probably will upgrade looking at all these replies my fps is decent from getting 100-120 fps on games at lowest fps and I’d like to have a more consistent higher fps for my 144hz monitor 🙏
Patatostrike@reddit
Seeing as you run everything on low settings if you want higher settings and higher fps then yes, especially if you want to try newer and more demanding games.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Okay gotcha yeah that’s what I’ve been thinking about because obviously it’ll have a way better boost than my current gpu
damien24101982@reddit
whats your cpu?
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Ryzen 5 3600x with evga supernova 750 psu should I upgrade?
Diclonius666@reddit
I imagine your cpu would bottle neck like crazy if it's as old. You'd have to upgrade everything.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Currently have a ryzen 5 3600x with a evga supernova 750 psu lmk if I should upgrade
SevroAuShitTalker@reddit
Upgrade.
I went from a laptop 1070 to a 3080 desktop 2ish years ago. It was amazing
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
I bet, I used to always have a laptop that’s not even for gaming and had 60fps around but now usually get 100-120fps with my desktop with a 144hz monitor
Asthma_Queen@reddit
I'd wait to see AMD's offer this time as well 9070xt looks compelling.
Nvidia's 5000 series really seems to be fleecing consumers with no additional features beyond we took frame generation and made it worse.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Ahhh gotcha I’ll hopefully get the 5070 and find it much better than my 1070 🙏
grrrrumble@reddit
Do you often play new AAA games? There will be more and more new games that won't run at all on the 1070 due to lack of hardware ray tracing support, most of which will be AAA. If you mostly just stick to indie and esports titles you'll likely be quite fine with your 1070 going onwards.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
I mainly play CS2, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege. There are games out there that I’d like to try but never got because I didn’t think my 1070 would run well with AAA games that have been coming out. Appreciate the response!
positivedepressed@reddit
Even for that a slight upgrade can boost your performance and enjoyment more, the used market and new unit of RTX 3060 or RX 6700 may suits your need
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
I’ll look into my other options as well thanks for letting me know! I’ve always been a fan of nvidia though so we’ll see hahaha
icelandicpotatosalad@reddit
You should definietly upgrade if you have the money for it. I highly doubt that fortnite is runni g great on your 1070
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Yeah Fortnite runs about 100-120 FPS which isn’t good enough for my 144 HZ monitor even with the lowest graphics settings I use, thanks for replying 🙏
Pajer0king@reddit
Points of view differ.
ecktt@reddit
Yes
Marfmc@reddit
Well, if you have the money and are (really) dissatisfied with the performance of your 1070, then make the switch.
phalguna1@reddit
Yes Just make sure u upgrade ur processor and ram and stuff to prevent bottlenecks aand other performance issues
VikingBattleram@reddit
I currently just did a massive overhaul from a i5 7600k to a ryzen 7 7800x3d. Currently still using my 1070 but I also recently went to a 1440p monitor. I'm waiting on benchmarks from to 5070 without dlss to see it's true performance and I'm keeping an eye on AMD's 9070/ 9070xt. I will likely be going with the amd.
00X00_Potato@reddit
why refresh rate is your monitor
Pajer0king@reddit
If it runs great don t upgrade. And i recommend going used/ last gen if you want to save money ( and the deal is right, of course).
trusttt@reddit
Depends on what type of games you play and if they are demanding, i upgraded from a 1080 to a 4070 2 years ago and now i run pretty much everything maxed at 1440p.
Alex216K@reddit (OP)
Hmm I think I might upgrade then I usually just run everything on the lowest graphics with minimal higher graphics that wouldn’t affect fps too much
