If this is true, it would be insane if Ukraine joined the EU before Serbia.
Fickle-Message-6143@reddit
Serbian people are not overall interested in joining EU anymore. For them if they join EU great, if they don't nothing new. Also practicly everyone knows that there is no joining EU without accepting Kosovo independence. How thing are going there is bigger probability to recognize Kosovo then join EU.
Ukrainians see that omly future they hold is within EU, altrought I don't think that EU will accept war torn country that has territorial disputes with biggest nuclear power.
Sir_Cat_Angry@reddit
I mean they accepted Cyprus. And it's not like Estonia doesn't have territorial disputes with russia.
Fickle-Message-6143@reddit
They accepted Cyprus because Greece was ready to blackmail EU with veto. Serbia doesn't have anyone in EU like Cyprus had Greece.
Is around 20% of Estonian international recognized territory occupied by Russia like in it is in Ukraine?
Sir_Cat_Angry@reddit
5% is still a number I would say. Like 5% is Crimea for Ukraine (Though it makes more of a point that Ukraine is huge country, than percentage of occupied territory, but still)
Over-Television-5400@reddit
Ukraine would join before Serbia, because the latter are mere Putin bootlickers.
SkibidiDopYes@reddit
Almost impossible to happen
Lakuriqidites@reddit
It is true, the problem with Serbia is different. Also they have been stagnating for a long time with only 2024 showing some progress. The difference with Albania for example was greater.
If there no problems with Kosovo and will on Serbian side to work on the chapters, it could have been part of the EU 10 years ago.
Sunnipaev_000@reddit
Not really. The SNS government is pushing EU accession, when the majority of the population isn't interested.
There's a reason Vucic will never host a referendum on EU membership because the vast majority of Serbs are opposed to it. And that number sinks even lower if EU membership involves giving up claim over Kosovo.
Sunnipaev_000@reddit
Ukraine will never join. This is a fantasy. lol
MasterGenieHomm5@reddit
Most current members did the majority of the reforms in only a couple of years. If I remember correctly Slovakia was the fastest, it opened and completed all the chapters in just 3 years.
So it's really not impossible for a motivated state to overtake one of the current leaders. And war is quite the motivator. In Serbia meanwhile, neither the government nor the population really want to join the EU and they like to blame it for the lack of progress in stead of making reforms.
So less prepared states surpassing Serbia wouldn't be surprising at all unless they get a big change in government and ideology. And not even the opposition is big on the EU.
AirWolf231@reddit
They probably wont anytime soon, someone will say no(and Serbia too tbh)... but its also better for them that all of this would turn to blue anyways. NATO on the other hand should be ASAP for them.
MegasKeratas@reddit
Serbia most likely would need to give up Kosovo in order to join, to my understanding this isn't happening anytime soon.
Also Ukraine is backed up by the US and by extension the whole of the EU too. Objective criteria can go out the window when the «big players» want you.
AideSpartak@reddit
The only way that happens is if Serbia just never even tries to join
Fun_Deer_6850@reddit
Turkey is blue in science and research? Dude, this is a joke.
Devoika_@reddit
Bulgarians often go to Turkey for medical care because the quality of both care and medical advancements is better. I know multiple people who were unable to get treatment for cancer or other serious diseases due to things like a lack of medical specialists or access to machines they needed for scans, and had to go to Turkey
Fun_Deer_6850@reddit
I am also a medical student and yes, we graduate well equipped and knowledgeable.
BUT, in science and research, the state does not give us a budget and we work with very limited possibilities or we have to go to the USA to research.
turkish__cowboy@reddit
Do you realize Turkey has a well-advanced defense industry? That's also science and research. The country was also ranked 8th in the world in technology rankings of the Economic Complexity Index.
Fun_Deer_6850@reddit
It's a technology. Science and research are different things.
Only-Dimension-4424@reddit
Seriously? We are way advanced on science except Western Europe and America , Balkan countries are small so they don't have proper science or health industry
Stealthfighter21@reddit
It's a myth. Actually, most of the medical tourism is just due to Turkish clinics selling hope. They tell hopeless patients that they will try this or that for that much money and people go as a last resort.
shm_stan@reddit
Much better than other countries on the list. At least you can't get a diploma by paying prices.
Fun_Deer_6850@reddit
This is something that also happens in our country.
shm_stan@reddit
No?
AshenriseOfficial@reddit (OP)
I'm no expert to comment on this, I just thought it's worth sharing around the Balkans.
HoLfElDeR@reddit
Where did you find this? Is there a better version of this?
xwqcz@reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/1i3b9x1/2024_status_of_applicant_countries_to_the/
It was made by this guy, he most likely took the info from official sources.
shm_stan@reddit
Science & Research being blue on Romania and Bulgaria is BS AF. You can get any diploma by paying the "price" to appropriate people.
AshenriseOfficial@reddit (OP)
How hard do you think would it be for I (or anyone else for that matter) to start the typical Balkan blame game and start pointing fingers? Or did Turkey become some sort of incorruptible Japanese utopia and I didn't hear the news?
pspman92@reddit
basically means: get involved in proxy war. start hating other country and you will get EXPRESS TICKET to EU, or to start negotiations and so....
rouzGWENT@reddit
But Russia is not on this table? What do you mean?
pspman92@reddit
im not talking about them..... :)
Administrator90@reddit
I guess 23. is the most important.
MLukaCro@reddit
Even if they complete all of that someone will block them...
Serbia is blocked by Croatia and Bulgaria. North Macedonia is blocked by Bulgaria. Montenegro is blocked by Croatia.
-Koltira-@reddit
Sadly we are green and not red or orange
Aggressive_Limit2448@reddit
Ukraine and Moldova on the benchmarks look worse than Western Balkans except BiH maybe. Albania is actually pretty good on the scale there and considering they had become candidates in 2014.
North Macedonia is a bad case that wasted many opportunities because of it's internal stalemate.
ExtremeProfession@reddit
Not really how it works as opening negotiations leads to a much more detailed report as opposed to candidates and potential candidates being screened by the EU liaison in an approximate way.
Whatever you may think of Bosnia politically, it's way more aligned with the EU legislative than either Moldova or Ukraine. Even the corruption is lower and high profile court cases happen without lobbying and blackmail like in Moldova.
Fickle-Message-6143@reddit
Yep, even Dodik is currently facing some charges. Altrought there is little chance he will be prosecuted. I don't see that happening in Ukraine, heck even in some western countries.
Gladius_Bosnae_Sum@reddit
Yeah, we have corrupt politickers as prime ministers, but at least they end up in prison!
ExtremeProfession@reddit
I'm not sure why the progress is marked as 0 when both the actual EC 2024 report and the Wikipedia article this was taken from shows that there was indeed progress
Flimsy_Snow5374@reddit
Of course consumer protection would be the last one on the list for Albania. We wouldn't want to inconvenience the monopolies...
No_Head_7700@reddit
Too many colors for the colorblind.
