Okay Ekahau, All I'm asking is a quote... Is it that difficult??

I'm trying to figure out the best software that fit our company needs in terms of wifi heatmaps and wifi surveys... so I reached out to Ekahau for a pricing for their software only.
I lodged a quote enquiry and I received a call. They asking me: oh we will do a demo for you, when are you available.. I said... just give me a price, i don't need no demos, i know how to use the program... Then they said, what about a certification from us.. the full package? I said... NO... ONLY the price and trial... please(?
They keep saying, oh okay will do that... 5 minutes later I received an email saying, hey... thanks for showing interest in the product, when can we have a demo?
I said... ALL I NEED IS THE PRICE AND TRIAL, if we are happy, we will request a demo...
Literally a minute later they sent me a meeting request for their demo...
ALL I NEED IS A PRICE!... HOW HARD IS IT!?

The problem with all those services that do this display the price on their website is that they want to find out if you're in the lower or higher side of the price bracket, and charge you accordingly. Even, if they feel that you're gonna get them small revenue they will give you the F-U price.
I only work with services that give you the price upfront and then they can apply volume discounts later. I don't need to watch a demo for a 20k€ service if my budget is 5k.

Funny enough, Ekahau did have price listed on their website a few months ago, and they removed it just recently. But most companies are buying through resellers, so in that case the price is going to vary depending on who you’re buying from and how deep a discount you have negotiated.

This is why you always ask a vendor how they stack up to their competitors, specifically. Get them to tell you who they think their competitors are. Then go get quote from all their competitors, too.
Usually this level of effort isn't necessary any more, because a couple of minutes of webasearching will yield similar results. We used to do it more decades ago. But you can still often get sales teams to tell you a lot about their competitors so that you can go straight to those competitors and tell them who you're bidding them against.

Hey OP - if you're about to hop into a software evaluation, our free tool might make it easier on you. We built it for a lot of the frustrations you mentioned.
If you wanted to speed things up with Ekahau (or anyone else on your shortlist), you can build out requirements and demo preferences (we have users specify they want pricing on the first demo often). You then get a scorecard for your buying team as well as a shareable link for vendors so they don't waste your time.
We're a small team and would love your feedback if it sounds helpful. Take care.

My problem with ekahau was getting training. the demos, webanirs, and even the bit of training they gave us are all "our product can do this and that and thing" and I'm like cool. HOW do I do those things? Step by step after importing the floorplan and going for a walk, HOW do I do it. Based on interactions with them and available training materials, I don't have confidence that their certification program has that info either.
we bought at the end of 23, and it was I want to say around 18K CDN for the sidekick 2 and the software license for the year. Just renewed the license earlier this month for about 3k CDN. That's for a single user. there was an additional charge for a "survey only" license so another team member could take the sidekick and do surveys as he visited sites.
I also am loathe to deal with any companies that don't list pricing on their sites. I wasn't the spearhead of this project, otherwise I would probably would have researched FLOSS solutions with 'normal' hardware.

My former boss was really good at negotiating deals for anything and everything, and he told me something that changed how I look at situations like this (I'm not gonna put it in quotes because I don't remember the exact phrasing):
Now obviously, there is upkeep with updates, but I think that he makes a good point. If you're buying a car, they will never go below the price it costs to make that car. But software is scalable in a way that cars are not, they don't make each individual copy of the software.
Similarly to how a company might ask for your salary history when hiring you to make sure they aren't overpaying you, software sales are trying to determine the maximum they can charge your for it, and they do that while demoing for you and having meetings. They really don't want to give you a price upfront. Too low and they can't get more out of you. Too high and you immediately look for other options.

Early 2020, asked Ekahau for an additional license for the software we already had in use, as the company was expanding. 8 calls and emails from them pushing for a demo first. They couldn't seem to comprehend that we had the software and knew how it worked.
Creshal@reddit
Someone's getting paid a bonus for every demo they do, aren't they.

I'm paying about CAD$3k/yr for Ekahau. The sidekick unit was invaluable in troubleshooting some challenging environment (shipboard) issues.

It has never fit better: It's about tree fiddy 😂
What's wrong with you man, this is not RadioShack you are asking for a price.
mismanaged@reddit
Weird how other suppliers manage to show pricing...
I guess everywhere else is Radioshack.
Ozi_404@reddit
Most B2B vendors don't sell direct to customers and provide only a valid project price to resellers. The vendors who list pricing are very generic and it will never match your purchase price. It is mostly to give you an overview about how a product is licensed or sized instead of a valid offer. Except RadioShack where the prices are listed
altodor@reddit
This is why I budget prices off from the CDW website. We have other vendors but when I'm trying to rough out a project's feasibility I don't want to spend hours getting pitched or walked through a sales catalog by a breathing tip jar.
Probably_a_Shitpost@reddit
Can you demo for him? I think he just wants a demo.
sleepfaII@reddit
i’ve found this issue with so many vendors…
no documentation on the site, just vague headlines about features. no pricing, data privacy info, etc etc.
the only way you can get any of the info you want is to ‘speak to an agent’ who then refuses to answer your questions unless you give them your email, company name, name of your first born child etc etc
honestly infuriating. i had another instance where the agent said they would answer several of my basic questions, transferred me to their support who then said they couldn’t answer any of my questions unless i did a demo (?!).
Rzah@reddit
How can they give you an accurate quote before they have seen how expensive your office is?
DingusKing@reddit
It was $1500 per license / 3k for the device when I last made purchase back in 2020. Might be more now but ballpark I guess if that counts lol
hackencraft@reddit
This is about what we paid too... Had to do a double check on their website as if I recall correctly they used to have prices published on it not that long ago... Very annoying that they've pulled the pricing information down...
mismanaged@reddit
Maybe try Hamina instead? Apparently they aren't as bad as Ekahau when it comes to giving pricing.

my last job switched from Ekahau to Haminia.
We tested Haminia once, and pretty much every single tech wanted Haminia over Ekahau, and my understanding is the pricing was a lot more reasonable
Lethy_au@reddit
The product is solid too from what I have seen.
Hamina pricing is available publicly on their website.

Check with some of your vendors to see if they're a reseller, they may be able to help you.
perthguppy@reddit
I tried buying it and they canceled the order and told me I had to contact their Australian office. So I did and never heard back.
gandraw@reddit
The sales people get paid for demos, but not for emails.
libertyprivate@reddit
Sounds like they've shown you how fun it would be to work with them
