The CGI team for this first showed their tech off to George Lucas in 1978 using the first digitally created X-Wings. Lucasfilm was like "Nah, maybe in the future when this tech develops, though."
I got this on blu-ray recently and it's an excellent copy of the film, and the film holds up surprisingly well, even the CGI that looks a lot like a '90s video game. It's a good kind of artificial, and everything around it is done very well too. I remember watching this at somebody's house in like 1985 on cable, and several times in the second half of the movie, this one guy would look over at everybody else, kinda shaking his head and go "ain't that a trip?"
This was the first movie I ever went to see by myself - I was 12 yo! They'd probably call the police from the theater nowadays. I rode the bus to see the matinee and it was awesome.
Thinking back, I have no idea why I went alone. None. I probably saw a commercial on TV and begged to see it I guess. My mom probably gave me the $5 just to shut me up. That would have paid for the matinee movie ticket ($3.50) and bus ride (50¢) with some money left over for popcorn.
Actually, there's no way my mom would have done that. I must have used my birthday money.
Neat that you saw it back then but I can't imagine where you're randomly coming up with the thing about "calling the police from the movie theater"; like, for what? Going to the movies isn't illegal for 12-year-olds now or considered 'risky activity' or whatever, lol. Kids aren't really that sheltered everywhere.
Ah, freedom! Loved those moments doing something for the first time. Building that independence! Living in a more rural area, we would ride our bikes to a far off destination, one time it was to an arcade a number of towns away. No one really knew the way, it was much further than we realized, but we found it. We were less focused on the original plan to spend hours playing games with the pending ride home. Still an adventure.
It was the first time I remember seeing something with this much fully-rendered CGI in it. I thought it looked a lot like the game 'Defender' as a movie.
I came here to say this. I'm not a fan of remakes but this is one movie that the concept and modern CGI could make very compelling. Hell, they could promote a team to real Star Fighters.
I'm not really a fan of remakes, but this is one that I think would be a great movie to remake today. The whole concept of a video game is a recruiting tool for an intergalactic war is something that I think would go over really well with today's audiences. The only problem is kids don't really play arcade games anymore, they're all playing console or pc gaming. Maybe if they were doing VR, and then all the controls on the ship were the same as the VR setup, but in real life. That could work...
This came out around when I graduated high school. As a video game player and sci-fi nerd I really enjoyed this. I generally hate reboots of 80s movies, but I wouldn't be sad to see them do a sequel or reboot of this since the concept was great.
arkham1010@reddit
Ahh yes, we look at it as a classic now, but it was obviously a movie made by marketeers.
Star war clone? Check
Tap into cultural zeitgeist? Check
Heavily involve the biggest new fad (Video games)? Check
Cheap to produce and no name actors to need to pay? Check

I didn't realise that it was limited edition... good luck!
rhcedar@reddit
I'm sure they are going to remake this at some point. It will suck. You can't re-capture that "80s lightning in a bottle " today.
Updating the CGI might be interesting.
Turbo-Corgi@reddit
They already did. Kind of. What came out is a series called Future Man.
rhcedar@reddit
I got more of a "Terminator on acid" vibe from that show. Although, the gamer aspect fits.
twirlingmypubes@reddit
It'll be some lame social or political commentary, or a forced BK Kids cast that kills the vibe.
AngryK9_@reddit
You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada.

Yeah, a reboot type sequel could work, not a remake. Like if they did it in the spirit of Tron Legacy or even Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle.
