What are the best day trips from London?

I’ll be in London at the end of February for work (staying near Euston). I’m planning on going 1-2 days before and wanted to squeeze in some day trips, maybe further out in the countryside. Any recommendations?

One of the more obvious (and for a reason) is Brighton. But I would also strongly recommend getting one of the tourist boats from Westminster pier, listening to the slightly cheesy commentary from the crew on the way to Greenwich (you do learn a lot about all the buildings on the Thames), then exploring Greenwich, the park, the naval museum (free) the covered market in the town, then getting the boat back.
On the way back you can get off at St Katherine's wharf and wander around there for a bit before taking a tube back. Or if you are made of stern stuff, the walk back to Euston is doable in a couple of hours and you see a huge amount of London on the way. It's a cracking day out if the weather is dry.

Sometimes when I have nothing to do, I like to buy the Thames Clipper rover and roam the Thames for the day getting off at all the different piers.

Brighton, Cambridge and Oxford are all around an hour by train from London. Each is well worth a visit and have a lot to offer in terms of history and things to see and do.
A little further out is Bath which is a about an hour and a half by train. Very nice city and the Roman Baths are worth the trip alone.

From St Pancras (short walk) you can get trains to Kent. Rochester has a castle and a Dickens connection they make the most of, also Whitstable is a decent seaside day trip even in winter.

Agree and for a slightly longer train journey you can also go down to Dover and see their castle, one of the finest in the country in my view
