Me enjoying a little us govt cheese

My grandfather knew someone who ran the seniors program and he would always wind up getting extra blocks of this cheese so we would always have one in my house as a kid. To this day it’s still the best tasting American cheese I’ve ever had!

A few years back I used to volunteer for the USDA Farm to Table program, and each box always had a gallon of milk, a meat, potatoes and onions, other produce, and this cheese. There were other items too but they changed week to week. One time I wound up with an extra box and was told to keep it, and the cheese was amazing! It made the best grilled cheese sandwiches. Sadly that program ended in 2021; it really was a wonderful way to get food from local farmers to families in need.

Remember getting a blocks when I was in highschool. I grew up in a small town in South Georgia and who ever was in change of giving it way had way too much/ not enough takers so my mom picked up a couple blocks and I remember it making good mac and cheese.

My Nana used to make grilled cheese sammiches whenever I visited, made with gov't cheese, of course. And she couldn't eat all of what they gave her so she'd send us home with most of it. There wasn't much to like about that woman but that cheese was worth having to put up with her.

The Dairy Price Support program in this country has resulted in the stockpiling of millions upon millions of pounds of cheese by the Commodity Credit Corporation. At a time when American families are under increasing financial pressure, their government cannot sit by and watch millions of pounds of food turn to waste.

I am authorizing today the immediate release of 30 million pounds from the CCC inventory. The cheese will be delivered to the States that request it and will be distributed free to the needy by nonprofit organizations.

The 1981 farm bill I signed today will slow the rise in price support levels, but even under this bill, surpluses will continue to pile up. A total of more than 560 million pounds of cheese has already been consigned to warehouses, so more distributions may be necessary as we continue our drive to root out waste in government and make the best possible use of our nation's resources.
