What’s with your bowl/plate situation?
Yesmar00@reddit
Is that.... okra?
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Yup!
Yesmar00@reddit
Augustus420@reddit
That boy put slave food in their ramen
errihu@reddit
What problem do you have with okra? The only problem I have with okra is that it doesn’t grow where I live. And I tried. I tried so very hard.
CaptainLollygag@reddit
OP didn't slice off the stems, slice off the other ends, and didn't slice them at all. They're just sadly floating there in plain warm water for, what, 3 minutes? That's okra abuse.
If you're in a gardening zone in the north, have you tried growing okra indoors under grow lights? I'm only just this spring trying okra in my garden (zone 8), so I've no idea if the indoor idea would work.
shihong@reddit
My Chinese parents are super into the natural flavor of things, by which I mean they blanch and lightly stir fry all veggies with garlic, salt and sesame oil. They grow their own veggies, so the okra’s probably getting picked, washed and thrown straight into a pot. We used to have a container for leftover bits and pieces like fish bones or okra stems at the meal table.
Your comment about the stems and the okra abuse reminded me of that!
CaptainLollygag@reddit
Oh, neat! Were those bones and stems used like garnishes to customize dishes?
Lightly blanching or barely stir frying is so much better than a sad little okra pod drowning in vaguely warm water for the 3 minutes it takes to cook ramen noodles.
Like your parents, I'm big on not wasting anything whenever I can, so keep bags of veg ends and different bones in the freezer to make broths and stocks. In fact, tomorrow I'll be roasting up the bag of crab shells, shrimp shells, and fish bones I've been saving up and then turning that into stock with some of the veg ends before pressure canning it. I've also got a chunk left of homemade bread that I'll be cubing and freezing to use for croutons or stuffing whenever we want those things. :)
errihu@reddit
I’m in zone 3. I tried starting them under lights but I think I transplanted too soon. They got shock. I have a hard time with indoor starts because of the lack of space for it. I might wait and try it again in a few years when I’m in a different space, because I sure do love okra.
CaptainLollygag@reddit
Oh, yeah, we're in wildly different climates.
Whether you want to try again, consider hanging up some shelves on a wall where you won't bump into them. That's how I do my seed startings while taking up minimal room. When I don't have seeds there, I add a few houseplants and tchotxhkes.
Yesmar00@reddit
Mannn if I gave my grandma ramen noodles with crunchy boiled okra she would slap me
AppropriateTouching@reddit
You do what you gotta do
TuvixWillNotBeMissed@reddit
I think okra is horrible but that's... certainly a way to describe it.
Gay-Bomb@reddit
Slave food?...
dusty__rose@reddit
hopefully it’s a reference we don’t get… 👀
tastefuldebauchery@reddit
It’s soooo good pickled.
yukichigai@reddit
Didn't it make the texture a bit... uh... slimy?
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Yes only when you bite it.
LadaFanatic@reddit
Are you swallowing them whole??
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Nah I chew them 😂
yukichigai@reddit
Well that's not as bad as I feared, but still.
Okra's legit though. I just usually cook it separate.
mangolover@reddit
I've added okra to ramen before, although cooked differently. I slice it up and then air fry it and add it at the end. really good!
K1LLAHCAM310@reddit
Okra is such a hidden Gem - well, obviously not hidden but it’s so fire
Yesmar00@reddit
I like it too but I don't think I'd eat this 😂
K1LLAHCAM310@reddit
Add some more shit to it and we cooking - this one need that “Soup” blend from Kroger
danfish_77@reddit
I swear y'all's struggle meals look like restaurant food
Superb_n00b@reddit
I struggle, but was once a cook for an extended period of time.
There is a lot you can do with very little lol
danfish_77@reddit
Sure but my struggle meals will be when I have like two ingredients left in the house, both of them carbs
nazukeru@reddit
I'm not even struggling and I ate toast and tortilla chips for dinner. I have a "lazy" problem.
decisiontoohard@reddit
Executive dysfunction counts as a struggle even if the rest of your life seems good imo
nazukeru@reddit
Thank you for recognizing me😭
Superb_n00b@reddit
Mine are usually something like flour, butter (or like butter, real stuff is expensive), many pastas, maybe some frozen meat, hella potatoes, and I have acquired many spices over many years. I usually have a giant container of oil from some time past when I needed it for something and just bought the big one, so I can easily just bread and fry something. Potatoes come in a million shapes and sizes. You can portion what little meat you have and put other things in too (such as the potato), and mix with various pastas. Luckily, pasta is all the same in flavor, so it doesn't matter the type. I can make a rue from the flour and butter, and bc of my coffee addiction, I always have creamer, so add that into the mix, season, add to whatever. I also tend to have large amounts of rice, bc much like pasta, rice is for when I am broke.
Basically, my poor people food go too's are :
Rice Pasta Potatoes Flour
After that, the items become luxury. I find the cheapest version of whatever food I don't hate, and do kitchen witch shit, and magic up some sort of meal out of it. Eggs used to be cheap, so that was a constant til recently. Chicken too. Went from like twelve boneless skinless thighs for 6$ to more than double that. Bummer lol I guess ima have to figure out how to make myself enjoy pork (if it's still cheap idk lol)
Good thing to do is, when you have the funds, buy things you can incorporate with one another in a bulk size. A thing I've found is sriracha, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Most expensive part is the oil. BUT! It lasts a while. You can mix approximately half soy and half oil, and give a boost with the "hot" sauce, and you got a really yummy sauce for your rice (or whatever you want tbh).
I also always have stocked some form of brown sugar. Lasts forever. I usually melt butter, add the brown sugar, and throw a little red wine vin, and man that makes some yummy chicken. Add seasonings however ofc, salt pep garlic (classic).
Honestly I eat poor most days, but the key is buy bulk items you can incorporate w each other, when you can. You'll have a surplus of it always, shit goes a long way. Rice for every meal sucks, but there are tons of ways to make it. Cooking takes creativity, and it can be done on a budget. It ain't easy, but there are tons of tutorials and recipes online that can help if you get lost.
RyanB_@reddit
Shit, I spent a good few years in kitchens and literally none of that transferred to my home life lol. All the chopping skills in the world don’t help me in the grocery store.
Superb_n00b@reddit
Different kitchens I guess haha
RyanB_@reddit
Yeah, likely positions too, was only a line cook so never had that room to be creative. Just following recipes.
And granted, I’ll see shit in the store where I know things I can do with it, but also know I won’t use it enough on my own before it goes bad. Then I try find other recipes with the same stuff, and all of them have multiple other ingredients that fall in the same category, and it’s just like…. Aggghhsg lol
That said, I’m also just not a big food guy, which is probably the biggest factor. If the day should come when I can get all my calories and nutrients from a pill, I’ll be first in line haha
CatFoodBeerAndGlue@reddit
If you think this would be acceptable restaurant food you go to some very different restaurants to me.
Gowalkyourdogmods@reddit
What restaurants are in your area?
crash_test@reddit
I'm sorry if you think this looks like something a restaurant would serve
danfish_77@reddit
I've been to some pretty mediocre restaurants
Omega_Lynx@reddit
Honestly, I’d fuck with this
shihong@reddit
Good job for eating your veggies!
not-a-realperson@reddit
That looks delicious tbh.
five5years@reddit
Cream of bottom shelf soup
yesyesitswayexpired@reddit
Looks too healthy.
FourWordComment@reddit
A table spoon of chili oil and this rocks.
ambidextr_us@reddit
A whole tbsp? Jesus christ, seems like a tsp is hot enough for a bowl.
oneloneolive@reddit
That does seem like a lot but I’ll heap and spread spoons of garlic chili sauce on that so I can’t talk.
ambidextr_us@reddit
I do that with the Huy Fong Sambal Oelek, they make good garlic chili sauce too.
greenbastard1591@reddit
brambleforest@reddit
Stop it, you're killing him!
Scrabulon@reddit
I probably would’ve just done the mixed veggies instead of boiling okra but 🤷🏻♀️
Negative_Reach_5316@reddit
Love my ramen infested with parasitic hair worms
Curabar@reddit
i feel okra is too slimy boiled whole, prefer to cut them up and stir fry them, but still good on a budget
BigMTAtridentata@reddit
i kinda like that slimy texture! love putting it in gumbo
Gowalkyourdogmods@reddit
That is sometimes what ruins gumbo for me, slimy okra. Not every time, just sometimes. When it doesn't I love okra.
g0thl0ser_@reddit
When I made gumbo with okra, the okra literally all dissolved and just disappeared into the mix. I slow cooked it for about 9 hours, so next time, my bf wants to add them later so they don't disappear, haha.
Blutack_stain@reddit
yeah snot soup :(
bluntgecko@reddit
As a person who’s been a vegetarian for over half their life, this looks bussin, I know them snow peas are CRUNCHY
darrelye@reddit
Need eggs
EmmyWeeeb@reddit
Tapeworm soup
mothzilla@reddit
Just needs soy sauce.
NinjaOnHush@reddit
That Okra only offended many people
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
I probably should cut them next time 😁
kerelberel@reddit
Your budget does not allow a knife?
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
I will cut them next time.
Bolf-Ramshield@reddit
It doesn’t look shitty at all!
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Thanks!
WoopzEh@reddit
I just know this meal was slimey as all get out. WHOLE OKRA OP?
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Yup!
BiNon-BinaryWeirdo@reddit
This looks good in my opinion, maybe a little bit much noodles lol
What spices did you add ?
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Just water and soy sauce.
RainbowFlygon@reddit
There's not excuse to be boiling your whole dinner unless your budget is so tight that you don't have oil. Even dry fried okra in a second pan might be nicer... Can you not afford any knives either? At least chop their tops and tails off 😭
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
I will do it next time.
GaijinChef@reddit
Screaming for some protein. Even some tofu
TrystanScott@reddit
Only criticism is to small of bowl for the quantity., otherwise I’ve totally made something like this for my dinner
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
I see thanks!
rowrowfightthepandas@reddit
Ramen with misua is a choice
AsleepInteraction882@reddit
Looks like you're getting your greens, maybe a bit too much...
bongdropper@reddit
Personal opinion: did not need 2 kinds of noodles. Otherwise, looks quite good.
toorealforlyfe@reddit
Looks actually tasty
muttoid@reddit
i’d fuck this up in a heartbeat i’m not even joking
_kashew_12@reddit
Looks bomb tbh
glitterfaust@reddit
This looks like some tasty hot pot
oneweirdclickbait@reddit
I mean, the thumbnail looks like a whole cauliflower that got really, really bad. Other than that, it's "just" a poverty meal. Hope you're doing better soon!
Professional-Ear786@reddit
Nothing wrong with the food but what’s with the too small bowl and spillover into the plate? 🤔
Haruka_Kazuta@reddit
Ohhhh wow, I thought those Okra were Edamame and thought, it can't be that bad.
Min_Mirae_Bro@reddit
um that looks fuckinf delicious
rsadek@reddit
There was some talk of not criticizing people’s meals that are due to budget. The consensus was more that “shitty” regards poor execution or conception
rsadek@reddit
I meant to say your noodle veggie soup seems just fine and a reasonable thing to eat
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Thanks!
exclaim_bot@reddit
You're welcome!
c-compactdisc@reddit
The ingredient assortment isn't terrible but there was likely a better way to execute the dish that wasn't throwing everything in a pot of water with minimal prep..
danngree@reddit
be1izabeth0908@reddit
Lol I’m making a lean cuisine pizza, you’re doing ok my friend.
buttplugpeddler@reddit
Simply chopping up your greens there would make this amazing depending on your spices
SlyFoxInACave@reddit
That looks delicious
RecalcitrantHuman@reddit
While this looks solid, I have to say I hate green beans
East_Sound_2998@reddit
It’s okra and peas lol
Superb_n00b@reddit
Your lucky day, as those are not green beans lol
Saturday1002@reddit
Cook everything separate then mix.
PM_ME_UR__ELECTRONS@reddit
Uncomfortably similar to what I eat. Is that zucchini and beans?
V01d3d_f13nd@reddit
At least you have a veg.
sleepdamnsure@reddit
Where’s tha flavaaah?????
dogoodguy@reddit
That looks fine it doesn’t belong in this sub
CharmedMSure@reddit
Needs soy sauce and hot sauce.
Dominique_toxic@reddit
TheWizirdsBaker@reddit
fry it and add (brown) sugar and soy sauce delicious
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Thanks, I’ll try it next time.
JemmaMimic@reddit
The glass noodles weren't enough so you tore open a cup noodle pack too?! 🤣
Direct_Witness_28@reddit (OP)
Yup 😁
JemmaMimic@reddit
Mmm, smells like desperation, well done!
Argon1124@reddit
Food looks too good. Enjoy your downvote kiddo.
Ketheres@reddit
So... whites and greens? I mean, it looks better than some of the stuff I've cooked.
El_Grande_El@reddit
I think a better way to treat those vegetables is with a stir fry but I’d still eat this.
YakElectronic6713@reddit
I don't see anything shitty about it. Better this than greasy fast-food crap.
Jeramy_Jones@reddit
Needs some rice.
pauldrano@reddit
r/decentfoodporn -this is way better than shitty
Superb_n00b@reddit
Good lol
4eyestou@reddit
I think it looks good, but maybe the cauliflower on the side.
loservibes_@reddit
I’d eat it
