What co-developed cars came in different body styles?

Genuinely curious? The only example I can think of this kind is the GR Supra. With it being a hardtop coupe but based on the BMW Z4 roadster which doesn’t come in coupe form.
snatch1e@reddit
The Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird were co-developed and both came as coupes and convertibles, though the Camaro was generally more popular.

The Dodge Caliber is a wagon/hatchback. The Lancer Evo X was a sedan.
sxtrailrider@reddit
Those share a platform? That makes me think the SRT4 caliber might be pretty fun...
H8MakingAccounts@reddit
No, bad thoughts!
Lots of...crap
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_GS_platform
P10_WRC@reddit
The dodge avenger in the 90s was based on the dsm platform for the eclipse and talon. I don’t think the avenger had a convertible but the eclipse did so that would be a good example
spongebob_meth@reddit
Yes. The srt caliber engine was very similar to the 4b11 in the evolution.
FWD only though, so its not really a good car. I like the neon srt4 better.
Grambo-47@reddit
There’s one in my work parking lot with a massive front mount intercooler, so there’s at least someone out there who thinks they’re worth building
Eggith@reddit
Never forget what could have been
R_V_Z@reddit
Thinking about buying a Dodge Caliber is justification for a wellness check.
driftking428@reddit
If you could get one in AWD I probably would have bought one back in the day.
TunakTun633@reddit
Sorta-kinda. The platform was a joint Chrysler / Mitsubishi project for a while, but the two companies went their separate ways about halfway through. I don't think you can feel any Evo in a Caliber... Though it would be fun to see for sure.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Why are you just looking at the evo? Every generation of lancer was sold as a wagon/hatchback.
driftking428@reddit
To answer OPs question the Evo X did not come in the same body style as the co-developed Caliber.
Yes the Lancer did but in the US I've probably seen under 5 of them ever.
spongebob_meth@reddit
I've seen a ton of the ralliart lancers in the US. More than evos.
Though they are pretty rare now. Their DCT was junk and they mostly went to the junkyard or are sitting in someone's back yard.
xXxDickBonerz69xXx@reddit
Does the Evo count as a distinct model? Cause that generation Lancer was available as a hatch.
driftking428@reddit
Probably not. I just felt the post was cooler if I said Evo instead of Lancer.
Wasn't it a few years before they made a sport back?
xXxDickBonerz69xXx@reddit
Not sure to be honest. I've seen like 3 of them ever lol

The Matrix/Vibe was just a hatchback, no?
Energy4Days@reddit
Had a taller ride height than the typical hatchback
Drzhivago138@reddit
True, 61" is pretty tall when your competitors are in the mid 50"s.
New_Inside3001@reddit
Opel Speedster and Vauxhall and Lotus
Mini countryman and f40 m125 and m235
cannedrex2406@reddit
Better example would be the Mini convertible and BMW 2 series Gran Tourer (small MPV)
Looking at them, you'd never know they were the same platform
Jlaybythebay@reddit
Or now the mini countryman jcw and the x1 m35
New_Inside3001@reddit
TBH they’re definitely the same platform but the X1 feels a lot more premium
New minis are just a quirky mess, they’ve lost their formula, lightweight go kart cars with cool interiors
Now they’re heavy and bulky “small” cars, with vegan leather with a mirror mirror on the wall type of head unit
Will drag in new clients but in the process they’ve alienated their past ones
cannedrex2406@reddit
I mean the countrymans were never small, but the new minis are only about 150kg more than the old R53 ones. It's not that bad. It's still lighter than almost any other hatchback on the market while still making 200+bhp
New_Inside3001@reddit
Electric JCW enters chat at 1800kg
cannedrex2406@reddit
Yeah we don't talk about that
New_Inside3001@reddit
I’ve been dailying a Mini Cooper se from a family member recently and idk, it’s still fun, but it lost all of it’s nimbleness
cannedrex2406@reddit
I mean it is hard when the car is a pure electric. There's only so much engineering that can be done in the present.
Hopefully battery density can massively improve in the future for lightweight batteries to exist
New_Inside3001@reddit
Oh that would be the dream
But I really see no point in a sporty EV for the time being, straight line speed gets boring quick, agility and handling is so much more what sports cars are about imho
cannedrex2406@reddit
Fully agree with that as well 👍
Jlaybythebay@reddit
Def. It’s a slightly cheaper BMW with no dash. I’d go with the bmw no doubt
FS16@reddit
same thing goes for almost all modern FWD platforms. VW's MQB for example, Polo, Audi TT, Atlas, T-Roc convertible, ... , all the same platform
DrSpaceman575@reddit

pretty sure i read before that the last gen taurus and the explorer from the same era share a platform

Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance Duster. The Shadow had a convertible.
bandi53@reddit
Absolutely identical cars from the same parent company, Plymouth just didn’t offer a convertible.
jondes99@reddit
Yeah, it’s kind of like the GM J cars that came in 2, 3 and 4 doors, a convertible and a wagon but the divisions didn’t all sell all of them.
bandi53@reddit
How cool would a Z24 or Sunbird GT wagon have been?
jondes99@reddit
Or a Cimarron convertible?
bandi53@reddit
That would be been a fantastic competitor for the LeBaron!
Drzhivago138@reddit
That honestly seems like a missed opportunity.
bandi53@reddit
Exactly!
FlatBrokeEconomist@reddit
Well no, not identical, because one wasn't a convertible. Isn't that the question of the post?
bandi53@reddit
Not really. And the Shadow was also available in non-convertible form as well.

jawnlerdoe@reddit
Miata and Fiata.
uaexemarat@reddit
Isn't the windshield the same?
jawnlerdoe@reddit
Same dimensions, the fiata windshield is thicker for better sound deadening of wind. Mazda purposefully went with a light weight windshield.
smackbarmpeywet2@reddit
They’re both roadsters though?
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
Miata could come with the PRHT. Fiat never got it. Still a roadster though.
uaexemarat@reddit
Fiat got an ultralight hardtop (124 GT), which the miata didn't and it didn't even have the mounting points for it
xXxDickBonerz69xXx@reddit
The Fiata uses an NC transmission. But the rest of it is ND.
NC was the power retracting hard top. The ND has the RF which is a power targa top.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
I owned one and an nc. I am well aware and already commented on this.
rp_guy@reddit
They’re telling you PRHT doesn’t apply to the ND. It’s called the RF. So PRHT doesn’t apply to the Fiat.
RunninOnMT@reddit
Maybe the Sky/Solstice would also fit, since that's an actual fixed top not a power folding one.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
Except it wasn't a real fixed top. Pontiac was cheap and grafted it on the roadster which is why it is heavier than a convertible instead of lighter.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
Had an abarth, interior was the same as the miata. Also meant you could use the miata guides to hack the infotainment and unlock it.
gimpwiz@reddit
The what now? I gotta look into this, eh?
jawnlerdoe@reddit
Certain interior trim pieces like the door cards, steering wheel center piece, and seats are different.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
Seats were pretty much the same. The "center piece" is the emblem. Fiat was so cheap they wouldn't even bring in the abarth emblem from europe.
You are pretty much nitpicking. Chevy has more differences between trim levels on the same model.
Noopy9@reddit
Weren’t those both only available as convertibles?
xXxDickBonerz69xXx@reddit
The ND is available as a targa
jawnlerdoe@reddit
Correct, although the Miata is available as a hard top.
Noopy9@reddit
Does the hardtop generation of the Miata have a Fiat version?
jawnlerdoe@reddit
Nope!
cholula_is_good@reddit
Fiata is the best nickname in auto history
Zappiticas@reddit
I’m also a pretty big fan of Saabaru and Trollblazer, the Saab 9-3 and 9-7.
Random_Introvert_42@reddit
The gearbox in the Fiat is from the NC Mazda.
jawnlerdoe@reddit
Correct, but not the same trans as the ND.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
This was due to the fiat motor having more torque. Upside it didn't break like the miata's downside is the nc transmission (had a 13 club spec) was just as notchy in my 18 abarth.
xIcarus227@reddit
I read 'Miata and Fiesta' and was hella confused for a second.
samdtho@reddit
Fun fact, if you got the Duratec 3.0L V6 in these, that engine was mostly designed by Porsche.
Drzhivago138@reddit
The Mazda had different body panels, while the Mercury was a simple clip swap. After 2007 they shared even more parts.
albertgt40@reddit (OP)
Wasn’t the Aston Martin v12 from that era “just” two Taurus 3.0s put together?
samdtho@reddit
I think that ended up being a myth because then did reengineer it, however when you look at the two engines, the AML V12 just looks like a Duratec 30 with additional cylinders copy pasted to extend its length.

Grambo-47@reddit
I thought the TT was based on the New Beetle chassis? Could be mistaken
jondes99@reddit
You’re not wrong, but they’re all related to the Golf.
TunerJoe@reddit
Which just happens to be the same platform as the VW Golf Mk4, first gen Audi A3 and a few other cars as well.
Notonfoodstamps@reddit

Jeep compass and Mitsubishi lancer
Random_Introvert_42@reddit
The Dodge Charger (/Challenger?) is based on an old Mercedes E-Class.
claspen@reddit
I was waiting for someone to post the most commonly repeated myth. No they're not. The LX platform is based on the LH platform converted to RWD with some Mercedes parts (transmission, rear suspension). Parts bin sharing, but different platforms.
mightguy@reddit
As is the Chrysler 300
Saleable_@reddit
Any Lexus/toyota on the TNGA platforms. Drive a C-HR back to back with a UX and you wouldn’t be able to tell they’re the same underpinnings
Stainless_Heart@reddit
The Fiat Tipo Quattro platform spawned four cars: Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, Alfa Romeo 164, and Lancia Thema.
The Fiat and Lancia looked much like the Saab, but the Alfa Romeo only shared the chassis. The Saab and Fiat were launched as five-door hatchbacks and the Alfa Romeo and Lancia sold as four-door saloons. Lancia added the only Type Four estate in 1986 and Saab eventually added a saloon version of the 9000 in 1988.
Slideways@reddit
The Montevdi Safari didn't have a removable top, the Scout II it was based on did.
The Chrysler Crossfire was available as a hardtop, the SLK it was based on was always a convertible.
Capri280@reddit
I wouldn't called the Monteverdi codeveloped. IH didn't have any input in its development, the Safari is more like coachbuilding with extra steps
albertgt40@reddit (OP)
Oh you just made me think of the crossfire for the first time in years haha! Oh guess that counts for the Cadillac XLR too which was a corvette but with a folding hardtop.
Slideways@reddit
Yeah, we didn't get a folding hardtop Corvette until C8.
ellWatully@reddit
I don't know if it qualifies as co-developed, but the original Saab 9-3 was on the same platform as the Vectra. While the Vectra was only available as a 4 door sedan, the Saab was available as a 3 door hatch, a 5 door hatch, and a 2 door convertible.

The Ford Probe (hatchback) and the Mazda MX-6 (2 door coupe).

Both hatchbacks though.
Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Corolla though....the U.S. did not get a hatchback Corolla that gen (because...we got the Matrix)

And strangely enough, Japan didn’t get the Matrix, they got the Vibe rebranded as the Toyota Voltz

grundlemon@reddit
Pontiac vibe and toyota matrix?
secretagentarch@reddit
Opel Vectra A and Saab 900. Same car, but they only share 5% of the parts.
RunninOnMT@reddit
Platform sharing leads to a bunch of “we’ll akchually” answers if you want to be a smart ass about it.
Here’s my example: 350z ragtop rides on the G35 sedan platform that never came as a convertible.
jondes99@reddit
There was a G35 convertible, akshually. It might have been a G37. Haven’t seen one in years.
RunninOnMT@reddit
Yeah, it was the G37, which was a 370Z, which...fun fact: Did not share a single body panel with the 350Z. It even has a different wheelbase than the 350Z, but people think the 350 and 370 are the same car, which is only....mostly true hehe.
You are correct about the FX35/45 too! Same platform!
TunerJoe@reddit
The G35 still had a hardtop coupe version though, I think the question is about cars that share platforms but have no common body styles
RunninOnMT@reddit
Ahh gotcha, mutually exclusive, not just one way. That makes sense
I dunno if the G35/Z thing works in that case. If i wanted to insist, I could say the 350Z was shorter and never had back seats while the G35 was longer and in both coupe and sedan form always had back seats. But I dunno if that's enough to call it it's own body style. Plenty of cars come with optional rear seats, eg Mustang, 911 (though those cars have the same wheelbase with rear seat deletes, the Z is shorter than the G35 coupe.)
HankSteakfist@reddit
Does the Audi S3 Sedan and Volkswagen Golf R.
Audi/VW may be cheating.
