Do any other single GenX still make their bed in the morning?

Seems so simple, and I still do it but just curious how many of you fellow single GenX still make their bed in the morning...
Antique-Ad-8776@reddit
Of course
invinciblemrssmith@reddit
Every damn day. I hate going to bed in a messy bed
jcwillia1@reddit
tucked sheets? no.
give the blankets a quick snap to make them look neat? yes.
lefty1117@reddit
Who even uses top sheets right now
Wenger2112@reddit
Sorry, man, but that’s pretty gross. Unless someone is washing your bedding every week or two.
lefty1117@reddit
It’s ok man, apology accepted!
Moiler62@reddit
Wait….people don’t use them anymore? Is this a thing
galtscrapper@reddit
I do because I can't be washing the blankets all the time. Plus the warmth and comfort factors in the Winter and the cool and comfort factors in the Summer. I can't sleep without SOMETHING covering me
lefty1117@reddit
Yeah fair enough

EricinLR@reddit
THIS a million times! Growing up it was all about tucked sheets and bouncing quarters off beds. As an adult I just keep the bed looking put together after I get up, but I don't spend any extra time or thought on it.
Capable_Isopod6563@reddit
That sucks, I'm sorry about the quarters. 😇💜💯
Gratefulmold@reddit
You have to tuck it tight to keep the scorpions out.
darkmaninperth@reddit
Jesus.. Where do you live?
Gratefulmold@reddit
I used to live by Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Forest. Always pull the sheets back before you get in, always check your shoes before you put them on.
Now I just make the bed to keep the cat happy.
darkmaninperth@reddit
Where I grew up, we checked our footwear before we put them on if the footwear had been left outside. Lest you get a nasty nip from a funnelweb...
But checking your bed? That's horrifying!!
212-555-HAIR@reddit
I do just enough so on the very slim chance that a woman ended up in my room, I wouldn’t be embarrassed.
1singhnee@reddit
Wait, that wasn’t just my parents?

vomputer@reddit
This right here
sassyassy23@reddit
That’s like me
cj2075@reddit
This is the way.
Adjustingithink@reddit
This!
Wild_Kitty_121@reddit
Same, although if the cats get to it first even the blanket doesn't get straightened since they like to curl up next to the piled up blanket.
Ahsin71@reddit
🤣🤣🤣🤣 why?
MinivanPops@reddit
No.
It traps moisture and will accelerate the buildup of bacteria and fungus because it traps moisture that would otherwise evaporate. I arrange my blankets to let the bed air out.
pixelneer@reddit
Absolutely.
I read somewhere that I think it was some Admiral or something.
First thing in the morning, get out of bed, and make your bed. You start your day accomplishing something.
I don't recall much else from the guy, but that stuck with me.
Ancient_Seat_7456@reddit
That was Admiral William McRaven. He gives the speech about the 10 lessons he learned from basic Seal training and that was one of the most important!
Mysterious-Taste-804@reddit
I think of this when I make my bed!!!
PappyBlueRibs@reddit
"If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right."
-Admiral William H. McRaven Full speech here
No_Elephant541@reddit
he's also one of the architects of the jsop drone killing ops in iraq, yemen, afghan etc. in the wake of the wars, these guys had zero congressional oversight to kill whoever they wanted, even us citizens. one of the biggest mass murderers of innocent women and children in us history. i picture him now staring blankly out his bedroom window with a perfectly made bed in the backdrop.
keithrc@reddit
People contain multitudes.
Organic-Aardvark-146@reddit
Because I feel like an unsuccessful failure if I don’t make my bed? Nah
Forest_of_Cheem@reddit
I follow the same mantra. I saw it on a tv show that only lasted one season. My life was in absolute chaos and I was severely disabled where I could hardly walk. I started by making my bed every day. I did this for months before taking the next step. I saw a doctor. Months later I quit smoking. Then I changed my diet. Then I started exercising. Etc. It took years, but I’m practically thriving now, instead of living like it’s a slow slide into the grave.
nerissathebest@reddit
Absolutely have to make your bed in the morning. Do other gens not do this? I feel like my house would look like an unsettled mess if my bed wasn’t made. And nobody ever comes over is it’s just for me.
BeltfedOne@reddit
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA.........FUCK NO!
reasonarebel@reddit
Thank the gods. I was starting to think I was in the wrong genX group. I get that people do it, but I have no inclination toward adding extra chores to my load. There are so many I have to do already that actually make a difference in the cleanliness of the house, I don't have time for extras that serve no purpose other than asthetics.
Alioh216@reddit
I fix it before I get into it. Only to toss and turn all night and tear it up again.
TheDaddyShip@reddit
My people. Thought it was maybe cause I’m an r/Xennial.
ThisTimeForReal19@reddit
It needs to get made in some fashion before bed anyway, why not as I’m getting ready?
I guess if you are the person slides into bed, falls asleep in under 5 minutes, never moves, and then nicely folds back your covers to get up, by all means go without.
My bed can look a little like a war zone.
reasonarebel@reddit
Why does it need to get made up? I don't slide into bed and fall asleep in five minutes ever... The blanket is still physically on the bed, I don't know why it has to be in any particular form or fashion? I'll be 45 in a couple months and so far, it's never required extra effort on my part to go to bed with an unmade bed. If anything it's actually more work to go to bed in a made bed because you have to unfold it before getting in..
ThisTimeForReal19@reddit
Because I don’t want my sheet and blanket all twisted and crooked.
Either way everything needs straightened out.
It takes me roughly 2 minutes to make my bed. I know this because that’s how long it takes to brush my teeth.
reasonarebel@reddit
Everyone has a different preference.. I'm definitely a toss and turn kind of person. It's just never been a thing for me.
BeltfedOne@reddit
Word!
AhMoonBeam@reddit
Me neither!! NEVER do! ..studies also show an unmade bed is healthier because it allows moisture from sweat to evaporate, which can help to reduce the population of dust mites that thrive in warm, damp environments, potentially lessening allergy symptoms for people sensitive to them; essentially, making your bed traps this moisture, creating a perfect habitat for dust mites
lady8godiva@reddit
I shower in the morning so I allow the bed to air dry. Once I'm showered, dressed, makeup (if I'm doing it that day) and hair dried (if) then I make the bed. Otherwise cat fur mats settle in. No thanks.
EvolutionaryLens@reddit
The sweet smell of science justifying my reticence.
scrumbud@reddit
No idea if this is actually true, but I'm choosing to wholeheartedly believe it.
AhMoonBeam@reddit
Pretty good reason not to make the bed.. and when the Karen's and Kevin's come at 'cha, hit them with " Es'cuse meh, I didn't realize you love to contribute to the mass orgyq of dust mites, that take over when you make your bed." 😬
BeltfedOne@reddit
TIL!
Chailatte8@reddit
This. This is why we stopped making the bed to keep it cleaner. I do wash my sheets regularly but leaving the blanket mostly pushed off the sheets really helps to keep it fresh. If I need to make the bed so just do it in the late afternoon.
ScooterMcTavish@reddit
Holy shit, why did I need to scroll this far to find this answer?
Who the fuck is coming that I need to make my bed? And I got enough shit to do without this.
Fokewe@reddit
Like, do all these tuckers have dates or a home showing?
barredowl123@reddit
I never have had the habit, so why start now? My bed is and always has been chaotic.
Miserable_Smoke_6719@reddit
This is me. I make it when I change the sheets or need to spread something out on it. Otherwise it is usually disheveled.
barredowl123@reddit
Yep!
Austin-Unicorn-8626@reddit
Me too
Significant_Ruin4870@reddit
My mom tried so hard to get me to make my bed. It never took. My husband is worse than I am, so I've got that much going for me.
1CagedTiger@reddit
Never did it when I was married either. Pissed my ex tf off. 😂 What’s the point? You’re just gonna get back in it anyway.
PS, I don’t iron clothes either. If it’s not wash and wear, it doesn’t belong in my wardrobe.
BeltfedOne@reddit
Agree in FULL! Ex-wife took the iron and ironing board 6 years ago. I seem to be doing just fine without them...
theimmortalgoon@reddit
I make the bed when I change the sheets.
Then it falls into further and further decay every night. When it’s messy and uncomfortable enough that I need to reorganize the bed, it’s time to wash the sheets.
Also, I don’t fold my clothes, I only have one type of sock and underwear, and I only wear one color (black).
I do enough shit I don’t want to do during the day. No need to add fretting about bedclothes and regular clothes if I don’t have to.

Yes, every day. Not tucked except at the foot end.
nygrl811@reddit
I'm a comforter only (no top sheet, hate things tucked in) so making my bed is super easy. So, yes, I make my bed.
LauraliRox2142@reddit
I put the top sheet back on my bed for the winter. It'll come off again when the weather warms and I don't have to have multiple layers to stay warm.
I might snap the quilts over the sheets to make it look neater but it certainly isn't "made".
1CagedTiger@reddit
OMG thank you! I HATE a top sheet, especially all tucked in. I feel trapped.
WhiskeyDeltaBravo1@reddit
Same thing for me.
ManufacturerOld1569@reddit
Yep! That's me too. Making my bed takes 30 seconds or less. My entire room looks better. It's a clear surface to use if I'm putting away laundry or something. Then at night, it's so welcoming to get into again. Definitely worth my time.
beyondplutola@reddit
Same. We ditched the top sheet and just use a duvet/comforter on a platform bed. Nothing to tuck and no dust ruffles, box springs and other Anglo-American bedding oddities that seem to be holdovers from the Victorian Era.
TheRealEkimsnomlas@reddit
I'm the same way! I hate top sheets but love a cozy comforter on top of me.

smokescreen_14@reddit
Define making the bed lol
UrBum_MyFace_69@reddit (OP)
I should have included that in my op - for me, making the bed...I have a fitted sheet on my bed, then a big fleece blanket and another blanket that is heavy as all get out that my niece made for me and that's it. So making the bed is making sure the fleece blanket and my heavy blanket are aligned and then I fold them....
smokescreen_14@reddit
Not me - lol. I pull the covers up and go.
Tamases@reddit
Every morning. Gives me the satisfaction of completing one project each day. It's small but helpful.
Silvaria928@reddit
I do. There's something about pulling back the covers of a neatly made bed at night that just feels warm and comfortable and gets me ready for sleep.

RedHeadedStepDevil@reddit
Me, too. My bed feels almost dirty if I’m getting into a bed that wasn’t made in the morning.
CanIgetaWTF@reddit
I don't need to be reminded at night that I was lazy this morning. It's bed time after all
jaunxi@reddit
You might want to rethink that considering that it encourages dust mites to breed:
https://www.sciencealert.com/making-your-bed-each-morning-makes-it-easier-for-dust-mites-to-breed-science-finds
EuphoriantCrottle@reddit
My bed GETS dirty if I don’t make it. I have dogs, and all it takes is one jump on an unmade bed with muddy paws and I get a day of surprise laundry.
However, if the bed is made, they land on a strategically placed microfiber beach towel.
Key_Swordfish_4662@reddit
Same. The only time you get into bed when it hasn’t been made is when I’m sick, since I’m in and out of bed throughout the day. So now I have that connection with unmade bed = sick
joslibrarian@reddit
Same. Plus...what if company comes over? IDK, I always make sure the kitchen is clean at night and make the bed in the morning. I honestly don't even think I've ever left the house with an unmade bed.

years of living in tiny ass apartments made me really start to resent beds for the amount of space they take up. the last straw was when i was renting a place that only had one 10x10 room and one day i was like fuck it i’m getting rid of that piece of furniture and buying an xxl thermarest instead. so now instead of making my bed i just pick it up and lean it up against the wall. so much more room for activities
LaVida2@reddit
Sometimes I wake up and find my covers have shifted too far on one side of the bed. I straighten them up but I don’t call that “making the bed”. I think the only time my bed is fully made up is when the sheets get changed and I love getting in a freshly made up bed.
Kinetic92@reddit

MeanWoodpecker9971@reddit
Every morning.
DoLittlest@reddit
I don’t make it perfectly every morning, but enough so it feels good to get into every night.
JustWow52@reddit
I read that it's better to leave the bed unmade because it allows the mattress and sheets to breathe. Making the bed holds in moisture.
I can't remember where I read it, but it made sense to me. I usually make it when I change out of my work clothes, though, because I like it to be put together right when I get ready to go to bed.
adrianp005@reddit

Making the bed? Bold move for someone with no one around to judge. I just throw a blanket over the chaos and call it “minimalist living.” We really do cling to structure like it’s the last lifeboat on the Titanic, huh?

OnionTruck@reddit
I make my bed, but not in the morning. I like to let the sheets air out a bit (yes I change then frequently).
Proof_Boat7824@reddit
I make it and sleep on top of it with a blanket. Much easier.
reb6@reddit
I make my bed as I’m getting out of it. Even on vacation when the cruise attendant is making my room up I will put things back together. Something about climbing under nice and neat covers every night is rewarding to me

JackCraneLamp@reddit
About 5 years ago that for some reason, my day goes better if I make my bed in the morning.
No tucked sheets or anything, I just make sure the pillows are lined up so it looks like there is a dead body under the blankets.
My mom never required it of me when I was a kid. Of course as GenX she was usually leaving for work when I was getting up so she probably didn't even notice.

PissedOffChef@reddit
I pull my side of the top sheet and my blankets back to the top of bed mostly cause my dog will immediately burrow in my spot as soon as I get up to go to work. He's an elderly rescue and he sleeps lot, so he already has a heated throw that he sleeps on top of, and another throw that I keep him covered with, but if able to choose, he gets in my spot. I love that dog with all I am, but I also very much need my bed to be clean and not wet with leg-gnaw slobbers. So, yes, in a sense I do make my bed. It's far from perfectly made but it's clean and comfortable.
SeismicFrog@reddit
When I got sober they explained it as no matter how badly the day went, you will crawl into a made bed. It’s used in other places obviously, but it grounds me.
Further and more apt to the broader group, it’s how I keep track of whether I’ve taken my morning medication.

I haven’t made my bed since I moved out of my parents house when I was 17. With the exception of when I change my sheets sines it’s easier to put all the sheets and blankets on if you make it as you go. My father was a total freak about my bed being made when I was growing up. And it has to be made just right or he’d make me do it again. Not so much as a single wrinkle was allowed. He was like that about every single thing in the house. It always had to be perfect or else it has to be done again.

I do, very half-assedly, simply because my cat likes to sleep on my bed while I'm at work, but she also coughs up hairballs on occasion, and if she's not on top of my comforter, then it soaks into the mattress which is gross.

Every morning. That way even if nothing goes as planned that day, at least you accomplished one thing. Also it makes the room look neat.
Keldrabitches@reddit
Fuck all that noise. I’ve learned the joys of keeping it made by sleeping on top of the bedspread with a comforter 😊. First thing I do at a hotel is kick the sheets out of the corners of that prison cell
Jumpy_Lettuce1491@reddit
I can’t stand seeing an unmade bed
Murderbot_of_Rivia@reddit
My husband and I work and sleep on different shifts, so there is no point. Additionally I had to sleep on a giant wedge for my GERD, and we each have separate (not matching) quilts. I have to imagine that if my bed were ever made it would look like some sort of Frankenstein's Monster of beds.
Though I DO wash every piece of linen on my bed once a week (including all quilts and comforters) because It turns out that I am quite allergic to dog hair (which I found out after getting my super fluffy dog that sheds alot)
hbgbees@reddit
I do, but it’s a European duvet setup , so easier than sheets.
Gotthold1994@reddit
I sleep on the couch as I just throw all the clean laundry I did on the bed.
71Turtles@reddit
I roll out of bed and go. Then it is ready to get right back in when I get home. It started as my own personal rebellion against the forced bed making of my childhood. But if you need a real reason not to make the bed (at least when you first get up), making the bed first thing when you get up traps moisture between the sheets. It allows dust mites and other allergens to go crazy. So I am not lazy. I am not unkempt. I am anti dust mite.
suupernooova@reddit

Is this a GenX thing? I was raised by wolves and never made bed as a kid.
Outrageous-Yam-4653@reddit
It stays as is,why make your bed?no one cares or sees it I'm single and I'm easy to please...
Bastyra2016@reddit
I sleep under a duvet in the winter and a lightweight blanket in the summer. Most days I leave them as they were when I rolled out of bed. However I generally straighten them before I get into the bed -so technically I make my bed every day (right before I get into it)
Elevated_Misanthropy@reddit
Hell no! I toss and turn all night so why bother? Just pile the blanket and pillows back up and have them ready for the next night.
BarisBlack@reddit
I had to do it as a kid or punished. Now I only do it before my girlfriend comes over. She will tease me when I "excuse myself for a minute" because she likes a made bed.
BarisBlack@reddit
Funnier is when she offers something if I send her a picture of a perfectly made bed in two minutes. I always tell her that it's not going to happen.
She's my kind of evil.

Traditional_Air7626@reddit
Yes, I do. I find that my bed doesn't seem very welcoming at night if I didn't make it earlier so I wind up making it only to get in it so I tell myself 'might as well make it when I get out'. Nothing fancy. Just shaking out the sheets and blankets to make it look presentable.

Strictly for convenience. I straighten the bed, not make it. I just don't wanna have to fight the blankets to get situated at the end of the day. I more about the quick pull down, hop in, pull up, done. None of that getting in bed, pulling up the covers, then using your feet to sort out the bottom of the bed nonsense. A quick straighten on the morning is a game changer for bed time

gmpeil@reddit
When my (M47) fiance (F45) and I first started cohabitating a couple years back, she insisted on us making the bed each morning. I hadn't been making the bed other than when changing sheets in years. I wasn't sure why she cared much, and she didn't really elaborate on why it was a priority for her. And just because of the timing of our morning rituals, I am almost always the one who makes the bed.
I love making the bed now. I feel like a clearcut and specific task meant to "organize" your space first thing in the morning is a great way to set your thinking straight to tackle the day. It's a simple thing that makes a major difference in the way I approach my daily life. She comes from years working in hospitality and that's where she gets the habit from. But for me it transcends just the basic tidiness of the room.
Plus it's nice to come to bed every night with a made bed.

Mostly. Some days it’s half made because the old, crunchy cat wants to sleep in. Then I do my best to make it around her.
When I was a kid, I slept on the made bed with a blanket so in the morning when I was inevitably running late all I had to do was a quick straighten and fold a blanket. Shockingly, my mother allowed it!

Flip overs up and over our night pillows, sure. I told her a long time ago that if she wants that extra stuff, I’m happy to do it on cleaning day. Or any day where family and friends will be in our bedroom. But otherwise, to me it's like tying your laces after you've pulled your shoes off.

frazzledglispa@reddit
You shouldn't make your bed in the morning. You sweat into the bedding at night, so you should leave the bed to air out with the covers thrown back for a few hours before making the bed to let it dry.
Making it first thing in the morning traps moisture and attracts dust mites.
AdScary1757@reddit
It's 50/50 for me. I prefer life when I do but some weeks in just too in a hurry to get to it.

It was instilled from a very early age...my Dad may not have made me stand by my bed for inspection, but from the ages of 9-16 boarding school certainly did, and by ex army matrons with a sadistic streak of meanness...and they were stripped and had to be remade with correct hospital corners...and that was before breakfast...don't get me started on mopping the floors, and waxing the furniture either. One problem with making your bed in the morning, if you are a night sweater, then your sheets will be damp. Making them up traps that moisture and things can grow more quickly. I leave mine unmade to dry to prevent this problem.

I've been making my bed every morning as long as I can remember. I used to not make my bed, it was just me so why bother with the effort, but too many times my sleep was awful because a sheet got pulled out from the foot of the bed, or the top covers were mostly to one side and it kept me from getting a good night's sleep, so I make it almost every morning now.

I have one sheet over the mattress and one blanket on top. Making it consists of straightening the cover so yes. I am a simple man :)
abbys_alibi@reddit
Yep. Some habits die hard. Plus, I don't want my mother to haunt me for not doing it. And, she totally would!
vwaldoguy@reddit

Ambitious-Job-9255@reddit
My boyfriend makes his side and I pull the sheets up 😂 I have my weighted blanket and the bed is basically his side and hers. He doesn’t like lots of blankets and I do.
exscapegoat@reddit
I only fully make my bed when I do my weekly linen change. But I do pull the cot up to the pillow to make it look a little neater. And I like pulling them back when I get into bed
DazzlingDoofus71@reddit
My Gran and her sisters could make a bed you couldn’t even get into 😂
I sleep on top of my comforter with a throw 😬
Gene1441@reddit
Yup...fold the sheets back on half and shake the pillows. Windows on a small opening for fresh air.

Kinda.... I flip the covers back up so that I have somewhere to put all the clean laundry I still haven't put away....
Auntie_L@reddit
I do because I have to put the dogs’ mats, blankets and pillows on after I make it. They lay there while I work at my desk. Part of the reason why I am going to have a home office when we buy our house

I really like the neatness of a made bed. I ALWAYS made it until maybe 2 years ago. Now, most days I can't be bothered. I sleep with 2 big pillows on either side of me and untangling them to only put them back a couple hours after I get home seems a waste of time.

pickleddresser@reddit
Nope. Never had to as a child, not doing it now. Waste of time.
Yasashii_Akuma156@reddit
I do, couldn't fold up my futon otherwise.
unHingedAgain@reddit
I used to. Then I read that you should leave your bed open so light can kill any dust mites growing in your bed. So I’ll fluff the bed and then flop the sheet and blanket over to expose the sheets I slept in.
Then later in the day or when I come home from work I’ll just flip the section and it’s a made’ish bed. But it’s always made for company, I’m not a total savage.
According to research from Kingston University, it’s generally considered better to leave your bed unmade in the morning as it can help reduce the presence of dust mites, which thrive in the warm, humid environment of a made bed; leaving your sheets exposed to air helps them dry out and discourages mite growth.

I don't use mine. I just sleep on top of all the bedding because it's hot where I live. The a/c gets the temps down to about 75° to 80° but I still get too hot if I use any bedding unless I push the a/c unit down to 70° but then my electric bill is much higher.

F-Cloud@reddit
I make my bed immediately after getting out of it. For some reason it bothers me to have a messy looking bed. I use sheet pins to keep most of it tucked in at night, so it's pretty easy to just tuck away one corner and straighten up the pillows.

bird9066@reddit
No. I end up making it before I go to bed. Because I like sliding in between the blankets when they're tucked in.
But since I'm alone, I also leave dishes (soaking) in the sink and crumbs may linger on the kitchen table longer than they used to.
I'm way too lazy to let it go much beyond that. I can see it getting out of control fast if I do

Lonestar-Boogie@reddit
I'm not single, but if I was, I would make my bed. Not the full folding the pillow up in the bedspread type thing. But the sheets and bedspread would be straightened out, pillow placed on top, etc.
I just feel like whenever I go into the bedroom during the day, and then especially at night at bedtime, I want the bed to look in order, rather than a mess. Also, if I take the time to straighten up the bed in the morning, it helps me to get into the mindset of caring about how I approach the rest of the day.
