ULPT: Borrow it from Bezos
Posted by Jimlad73@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 394 comments
Need a specific item but will only use it once? Just get it from Amazon, use it carefully and then send it back for a refund!
Amazons return policy is immense. They cover all the costs and it’s really easy.
Just make sure the item is from Amazon and not a third party seller.
For example my daughter needed a camel costume for her Christmas play. Primed it, wore it for the dress rehearsal and play, sent it back!
Power tools, technology, whatever you need. Amazon is an item library.
KevinFromRadioShack@reddit
60% of the sales through Amazon are from independent sellers, you aren’t hurting Bezos you are hurting the small seller. All return related cost are passed back to the seller on top of them now having a used unsalable product
Eastern-Astronomer-6@reddit
Excessive returns will get you banned from the platform, so use sparingly.
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
Luckily my wife has packages almost daily arriving from Amazon so my return % is very low
skylarpaints@reddit
Previous rep for amazon customer service in conversation relevant departments.
You best believe they are gonna track it another way than just volume of returns vs amount of orders overall. Be careful. Your wife is gonna be rightly very mad when her account gets warned through email, then restricted to only digital purchases on her account, and then closed as you ( not your wife in actuality ) are not what amazon considers a consumer it is interested in doing any business with.
And then if that happens, good luck to either of you making a new account that isn't related in any way to her then old account.
It happens more often and a lot quicker than one would think nowadays.
This is a warning to everyone else looking to take the advice from this post in general.
There are very few ways yall can scam amazon now.
headinthesky@reddit
I have tons of returns and never have had a warning. Nanny times they have told me to keep the item, recently it was a 200$+ amp. But I also keep a lot of the higher priced, higher margins things. As soon as you're costing them money, they will kick you
Heisenburbs@reddit
Our family ends up buying a lot from Amazon, and we return a fair number of things, and never even a warning.
That said, our returns are legitimate, and a lot of it is clothing.
I was shopping for camping backpacks for myself and sons for Scouting. No EMS or REI near me, so I ordered 8, and returned 7, and bought another of the one we liked.
They’re a mail order company and must know part of this is the cost of doing business.
skylarpaints@reddit
Buh buh buh buh bingo! on that last statement.
BlavierTG@reddit
ULPT: If your significant other is ordering too much shit off Amazon get the account banned by returning things too many times.
Civil-Independence45@reddit
The real tip is in the comments!
skylarpaints@reddit
This is honestly really good! Would work very well.
garaks_tailor@reddit
Gotta have the trench coat full of glasses with fake noses and mustaches that are spare emails and giftcards
slaorta@reddit
They force you to verify new accounts with a phone number now
Alone-Salt-7934@reddit
It sounds hard but doing all of this is actually pretty easy. I don’t know what the “return” is on an Amazon account but if you can get 1000$ worth of rental value in returns on an account before it gets banned then the process is a net positive.
MedicineLow1859@reddit
You act like all of these things are hard to manipulate or don't have a work around. 😂.
Smm panel for the phone number New Email for the account Reship address for the address Fake name IP address. Airplane mode on/off VCC for the payments.
Rinse and repeat.
strangelove4564@reddit
LPT: Hang out with a street gang, enter federal witness protection program, start new Amazon account.
IndyAndyJones777@reddit
Amazon still knows, and after banning your new account that street gang starts seeing your new identity for sale on Amazon. But only with Prime.
banantalis@reddit
And one short ad.
samisnotokay@reddit
The phone number thing screwed me so bad recently... Got a fire tablet for Christmas (I think that's what it's called?) and I couldn't use it until I verified my phone number, turns out my Amazon account is connected to my old # that I don't have access to anymore so I tried to change it. As it turns out!!!!! Someone this number belonged to in the past had an account with it on file so I couldn't change it.
Cue Amazon support. Aka the AI bot that loves to do anything BUT help. Eventually after fighting with it I got transferred to an agent. I'd include the screenshot but it isn't letting me. Basically I said "my current phone number ending in YYYY is associated with someone else's account" and they literally said "but it's right there on your account. The number ending in XXXX" so I sent in all caps "PLEASE LISTEN TO ME" and they transferred me to another agent who fixed the issue in maybe 5 minutes 😂😂 I can imagine this would be even more difficult for someone whose account is flagged
slaorta@reddit
Something similar happened to me when I was working for Amazon flex. I ended up being effectively fired for over 3 months before it got straightened out over 100 emails later. It was my full time job at the time I lost access. Absolutely horrible.
skylarpaints@reddit
Oh my goodness, I got calls all the time while working in Amazon's account change department for people using flex, and that was a real tough call usually.
GaGa0GuGu@reddit
Unethical life pro tip: Consider resetting the password of the previous user of the phone number.
Jack_Spatchcock_MLKS@reddit
Lots of websites for temp use phone numbers. It's disturbingly easy, actually....
Like if I need a confirmation code or whatever, but don't have a phone.... Is their intended purpose I'm guessing....
Google a few. Some are even free and you can pick which country you want the number to be from.
dennys123@reddit
All of this is just trivial to get past. Phone number? Google voice. Email? 10 minute mail. Payment method? Prepaid visa. Shipping? PO box or a family/friends address.
a_mulher@reddit
Or virtual (temporary) credit card numbers. Capital One offers that.
AvesAvi@reddit
Does Google Voice really work for number verification?
ooohexplode@reddit
I have had it work for some services, but denied for others. Always worth trying if needed.
Dr_Gomer_Piles@reddit
Amazon locker pickups will really fix the hardest part of this
dennys123@reddit
Oh yeah, I completely forgot about those
-WaxedSasquatch-@reddit
This is actually pretty easy to get around if you take the time to do it. Nothing too crazy; anyone with even just a little knowledge could make it work at least 10 account swaps. I’m sure they would get more clever, but in that run you could have a good amount of fun.
(I’ve always been a fan of screwing the corporations that are screwing us)
IllMutation@reddit
The new phone, tablet, IP address, VPN, and delivery address are so real that it’s unbelievable how they can tell if you’ve been doing this again. It’s happened to me before.

vpn and use a P.O box...amazon doesnt know shit lmao.
just call customer service after 8pm PST thats when customer service kicks over to india and those people dont give 2 shits.
i got 2 free PCs and a ton of other stuff from amazon.
subiedoo96@reddit
Yeah it’s about to happen to me I think unfortunately
B0B_LAW@reddit
So what are the ways to scam Amazon now? Asking for a friend. Lol
censorized@reddit
That's really too bad since Amazon attempts to scam me all the time.
Just one example: a customer bought what they believed were knock-off Nespresso pods but sold on Amazon as the real thing. They went so far as to send to Nespresso and get confirmation they were fake. When Nespresso confirmed, customer informed Amazon. And guess what happened?
Nothing. The same seller is selling the same counterfeits to this day, years later. Fuck Amazon and their fucking scams.
RowanEuphoniumStudio@reddit
I had a friend get a package stolen and they made him send a police report. I’m sure he must have abused something and they were fed up with it.
myotheraccount2018@reddit
But legitimately, I've had a bunch of bad orders from Amazon lately. Mostly missing parts from my order.
ideapit@reddit
What are the ways we can scam Amazon now?
Not that I could ever DO any of them.
Just asking for a friend...
matthieu0isee@reddit
I have a friend who has been doing something very similar, but maybe even worse, for about 6-7 years now. Every now and then they’ll tell them they have to get a police report before they’ll process the refund or return, but they just wait about 2-3 months and then they can continue returning/refunding like normal. Sometimes the bot does it automagically or a person comes online and does it anyways.
They haven’t received a single email or warning (I have no clue how, because they’ve does this A LOT) and their account isn’t restricted in any way. They must have extreme luck
kdollarsign2@reddit
Get a police report?
lifeonsuperhardmode@reddit
But also.... It's the business owners that take a hit, not Bezos. There's a reason why Amazon can be "so generous" with their return policy. Amazon is not paying for it.
aspie_electrician@reddit
something i've wondered... what happens if someone buys a house that is amazon address blacklisted, but the new homeowner is in no way related to the previous owner?
skylarpaints@reddit
More than likely nothing, but honestly I've seen stuff similar all the time working calls.
aspie_electrician@reddit
I've seen a few threads here on reddit where OP moved into a house that the previous owner had gotten blacklisted thru Amazon, and the new owners account got terminated due to being "related" to the banned previous owner
exWiFi69@reddit
Sometimes I buy a bunch of clothes to try on and the majority don’t fit and I return. It’s hard to know the quality or how it will fit. I’ve done the try before you buy but not everything qualifies under that. Is there a way to make sure I don’t get banned? What’s best practice?
McMillionEnterprises@reddit
Is Amazon really going to ban someone over a $50/return after use a couple times a year if the customer is spending 10k+/year?
It is not likely. They write it off as cost of doing business just like the grocery store writes off the $0.50 of grapes my toddler eats while I shop.
maletechguy@reddit
This is highly context dependent. I had the warning email last year after years of using & abusing the policy, and I figured it was due to returning a tablet (for an honest reason as it happens) that had been activated & subsequently factory reset. Clearly they care a lot about electronics and pay more attention.
For things like cheap af polyester clothes and gym equipment and the like, they really do not care at all.
VerySuperGenius@reddit
For years Amazon had a program call try it before you buy it where the whole point was to just order clothes you might not even want just to try it on.
tnemmoc_on@reddit
I still have it on my account.
panda5303@reddit
They still have it. I currently have 2 try it before you buy it sitting in my cart.
ButterscotchButtons@reddit
I'm surprised they did away with it.
It appeals to people, but the real benefit is to the retailer, because in effect it just shortens the return window, and most people don't send the stuff back in time.
Electronic_Permit351@reddit
Yeah, I just bought a surge protector with a backup battery, and almost everyone I looked at exclusively said, "No returns." I know people do this with generators a lot after a storm passes or doesn't pass, rather. So I get it in that end.
TheRealGunn@reddit
I look forward to the day they ban me.
I literally only use Amazon because of the return policy.
It's so terrible now anyway.

I'm guessing this is the case now AFTER that one guy returned about half a million dollars of products with empty boxes and trash. I wonder how many packages that is? that's a long time to be getting away with that bullshit
skylarpaints@reddit
That and a thousand more cases. But it's also because of people who scam real aamzon customers and take control of accounts and abuse the customer and company. That's a huge problem in itself.
Acrobatic_Bend_6393@reddit
Teach us the ways
skylarpaints@reddit
Nah dawg
arthurdentstowels@reddit
Thanks for piping up with actual useful information. I've not done this myself but my housemate has done so on several occasions, I have warned that being blacklisted is a very real outcome. Honestly I've used Amazon for so long and as much as I hate the owner and the company for its misbehavings, it is a great utility for me that I'd like to keep without being banned. I'm assuming that even being at the same address as someone who uses Amazon as a product rental service can put me in the crossfire.
skylarpaints@reddit
I am gonna say yes to that honestly. Be real careful about that, remove any of their cards or info from your account is my best advice.
Jazzlike_Pen407@reddit
Back when Prime Now came out, I would refund/return basically 70% of grocery orders because I was poor. They wouldn’t ask for anything back and it worked for ages. Account was closed, so I just opened a new one using my middle name and different card/email.
Not proud of it but I had to do what I had to do.
skylarpaints@reddit
So I was one of the agents who launched Prime Now when it first was developed. Holy moly what a shit show that was. I can't tell yall how bad it was, but it was an absolute nightmare for everyone working PrimeNow.
They knew about the abuse, it was literally every other call for us. There was one person we knee by first name and literally had to work together in real time to try to handle it was insane.
But it's literally Amazon's fault for not making it to where people couldn't scam the platform and the service.
I try to imagine how much money I refunded while working just my prime now contacts, let alone my Restaurants contacts or my Fresh contacts and I'd bet you it's more than ill ever make in my entire lifetime. That sounds astronomical but it's probably feasible.
sakurakoibito@reddit

HausWife88@reddit
And then you can create a new account and pickup from an amazon locker. Lol
OGmoron@reddit
Buy Amazon GCs from the grocery store and refund purchases back to the account. That money is tied up in Amazon's ecosystem while using Jeff's Lending Library, but can be extracted by buying and easily resalable item and then putting it up for sale on eBay, FBMP, etc.
VerySuperGenius@reddit
Or just use a different card
derande_yo@reddit
I have a neighbor who outfits their entire Xmas home decor from Amazon and sends everything back the days after. TONS of items and they do this annually.
boxofrabbits@reddit
So much of that is just going in the incinerator
OGmoron@reddit

Spankler@reddit

AngelComa@reddit
OK people will just shop somewhere else.
IAmImi2@reddit
Do people who really just had bad luck with Amazon and they weren't trying to scam end up getting banned?
daddybearmissouri@reddit
I've been doing this for years. Fuck Amazon.
ExtensionResearch284@reddit
That's what I thought too til I got banned. I return things rarely now. They don't care how much you buy vs how much you return.
You can't have more than like 1-2 returns per month, they will flag you and then watch you for a few months, another return, and banned
diamondpredator@reddit
Lol this isn't true at all. We buy a LOT of shit from Amazon and my wife returns like 30% of what she buys (clothing, home decor, party supplies, etc.). She's been doing this for years and we haven't heard a peep from them. No emails or anything.
OGmoron@reddit
My gf does this, too. She regular buys stuff without paying attention to the description and sends back what doesn't fit her needs or if she doesn't like it. He's done this is all kinds of stuff. Laptop, iPhone, clothes, kitchen gadgets, cleaning supplies, a bike, pet stuff, even furniture. I work next to an Amazon brick-and-mortar locker/return store and get asked to return her stuff pretty regularly. This has been going on for years without so much as peep from Bezos about it.
diamondpredator@reddit
Yep, lots of people I know do it. The two partners that own the firm I work in are very high net worth people and they buy and return 5-figures worth of stuff monthly.
Boopy7@reddit
i would do this (and Amazon or whomever would make a lot more money off of me if I did) if they didn't charge for returns so basically I end up paying a fortune for a small thing like a dress, bc I have to keep buying different ones until finally getting the right one. Paying for all those returns adds up to a whole new dress, sometimes. So I just quit shopping for clothes online, I got sick of paying a small fortune in returns while trying to save money on an outfit. If they didn't charge for returns I'd probably keep buying clothes from there, the same way I did from places that allow you to try on a bunch of different stuff and return for free. And paying to return something to China? Forget it, so I end up with a whole roomful of badly fitted clothing
diamondpredator@reddit
If amazon is the seller then there's usually no charge for a return. I've paid a charge maybe a handful of times.
ExtensionResearch284@reddit
Wonder if this changed. My ban took place in 2021-2022 time. Things could've changed by now.
diamondpredator@reddit
Been doing this since like 2015 so . . .
ExtensionResearch284@reddit
Yeah, not in my case. Was with them for 7 years. Had over $2k worth of stuff ordered within a 4 month span.
Then had 3 or 4 returns. Was banned without warning, reason was too many returns
diamondpredator@reddit
Weird, I should've been banned like my first week lmao
alu2795@reddit
Same. This is hilarious. I’ve returned 10+ items a month many many months.
diamondpredator@reddit
I literally took like a dozen things to the Whole Foods return yesterday haha.
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
Oh yeah I’m definitely not suggesting you do it a lot!
migukau@reddit
Why? Maybe you should have a chat with your wife about a potential shopping addiction.
diamondpredator@reddit
Lol, you know nothing about their lives. Maybe they have money and it's an insignificant thing to them.
migukau@reddit
Why would the money they have make a difference? Are cocaine addicts not addicted to cocaine if they're rich?
diamondpredator@reddit
Because you're throwing the word addict around carelessly. If they have money, and it doesn't harm them in any way, then they're fine.
They COULD be addicts, but you don't know that.
layout420@reddit
I get what you're saying but just because you have the financial means, it is still an addiction. For instance, my wife is most certainly addicted to shopping. She probably spends thousands of dollars per month or so and just because we are financially well off doesn't mean she's not addicted. She is 100% addicted to retail therapy. I've set limits and it's never been an issue but if we didn't have a high household income, she'd be in major debt. She cannot help herself and is prone to making bad financial decisions as a result. The worst thing they ever did was make online shopping so convenient that it's easy to get yourself into debt.
diamondpredator@reddit
That DOES sound like an addiction. My point was, the person I was responding to doesn't know the details, just that there's a lot of shopping being done.
I know a few very high net worth people and they shop a LOT, but it's not an addiction, it's simply because they can. They're not shopping as therapy, they can control themselves if need be, and they stick to their budgets no problem - their budgets are just high.
migukau@reddit
Thats still an addiction.
diamondpredator@reddit
That's not what an addiction is. An addiction is something that you feel you NEED to do and something that is done with a lot of emotional strings attached. Doing something regularly doesn't make it an addiction.
migukau@reddit
Why would the money they have make a difference? Are cocaine addicts not addicted to cocaine if they're rich?
Moobygriller@reddit
Same, I think since I opened the account in 2007, I've easily spent over $300,000 and return things all the time. Never flagged
DiarrheaDrippingCunt@reddit
Consoomerirsm ftw.
pREDDITcation@reddit
daily? you married someone completely wrapped in consumerism
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
Lmao that was a total exaduration to make a point but thankyou for your concern
pREDDITcation@reddit
if you have to exaggerate then you don’t have much of a point.
also, not concerned, just making fun of how much money your wife wastes and what hole in her life she’s trying to fill by spending so much
Mycatreallyhatesyou@reddit
Or maybe she buys household necessities. You probably haven’t met a woman before, but we do not just buy things on a whim.
layout420@reddit
You sound like my wife. I'm inclined to agree with you because I don't do the shopping or take care of the household. There's so much that goes into it. Us men are just there to enjoy all the good stuff that magically shows up and then we feel like it's out job to regulate everything else that we deem not necessary. I've decided to trust my wife's spending habits as long as she stays within her budget. We have 2 kids and she's guilty of spoiling them and 99% of her purchases are for the kids. I feel lucky we can afford to keep everyone happy and it doesn't really hurt our bottom line.
esco250@reddit
I was gonna say. My wife buys and returns things almost weekly, but most of it unused.
_SteeringWheel@reddit
Why?
esco250@reddit
It’s mostly clothes that doesn’t fit, or a product that is crappy quality and breaks within 2 weeks/few uses.
metalflygon08@reddit
With clothing don't they have a special system where it is shipped to you to try on before you actually "buy" it?
I know I've done it with shoes, where they send me the pair and I can try them on, with them charging me after a certain time frame if I don't return them for not fitting.
Porgdaporg@reddit
They are actually discontinuing that option this month from what I’ve heard
esco250@reddit
That might be what she’s doing, I’m not entirely sure since I don’t really use amazon.
_SteeringWheel@reddit

camelCaseCoffeeTable@reddit
I don’t work for Amazon, so this is all speculation from someone who does work in tech and has experience considering edge cases.
I’d be surprised if they went off % of packages. It allows for this exact workaround to essentially turn them into a rental service, which they don’t want to be.
If it were me in the room designing the infrastructure to detect this, I’d absolutely push for total value of returns in a monthly/yearly cycle. Once it hits that, the account is flagged for manual review and appropriate action taken.
Again, I’m not an Amazon employee, I’m not saying this at all authoritatively. But I do have 10 years of experience as a developer and I don’t think I’d push for percentage of packages to be my metric when trying to stop this behavior, since it allows such an easy edge case workaround.
Of course, there’s also the (very real) possibility Amazon is ok with this workaround - after all, it means you buy a lot from them so maybe you get more leniency. I definitely could see that being the case as well
TL;DR: I wouldn’t necessarily count on a large number of delivered packages protecting you from blowback from Amazon.
diamondpredator@reddit
It's this. As you said, you're a dev, not bizdev lol. The percentage of people that would take advantage of this is much smaller than most would think. They're fine with a little hassle because people that buy a lot of shit from them also keep a lot of the shit they buy.
Adventurous-Yak-8929@reddit
I don't work for amazon but I do work as a clown and have experience packing people into small cars.
Amazon always wants a %. They always say go light yourself on fire so they can laugh at you. The Amazon always takes 10% off the top. You don't want to piss off those side show folks so you just smile while you die inside. The smell of burnt hair is your constant companion and the only thing that goes to bed with you every night.
No-Will5335@reddit
I think with how much your wife orders you’re actually being bamboozled by Amazon
TheDrummerMB@reddit
The percent doesn’t matter. You’ll get flagged regardless. Not a good idea
WildInjury@reddit
Well maybe yall can save money by ordering less packages in general….who cares about your return rate when you busy less and higher quality stuff.
DivineActions@reddit
I return 60% of my orders (maybe like $1000/year) and have never even been warned. I know it’s true they’ll ban you with too much abuse but I feel like the line is a LOT higher than people think. Plus I don’t actually abuse the returns, I just order multiple sizes/items and keep what I like and return the rest. If you’re scamming the line is likely lower
Qwerk-@reddit
Reading their comment concerned me for a little bit, but I do the same thing as you. It's really hard to judge clothing online, so for example when I'm looking for a dress for a wedding, I will spend $1,200 on a dozen dresses at the same time, try them all on, and return all but the one that fits and looks best.
I'm hoping this doesn't cause them to stop selling to me, because I'm definitely not using the system to get things for free, there's just no way to try on clothes online except through the system. Also, colors are often different online versus in person.
DivineActions@reddit
I think clothes are different anyway, what you’re describing is what they expect. Either way, even if they did ban your account it’s not that serious. You could just create a new one lol
aweroraa@reddit
I wonder how they blacklist.
If it’s address based, you could get around it with a PO Box.
If it’s card/bank account based, you could get around it with a prepaid Visa.
If it’s name based, make up a name.
Idk, maybe if they can’t identify you they just limit returns and/or what you can buy 🤔
Idk, just trying to think unethically :)
FenixVale@reddit
If it's address based and you use a PO box they can likely deduce relevance from local proximity if it's in the same neighborhood/town
If it's card, you can use a prepaid sure. But it's def not card.
Name based will cause issues with mailing as packages may be rejected due to a name that isn't related to the address.
It's typically going to be a combination of IP address, name, payment info, address, etc. Amazon is a big company. They have a LOT of technology to deduce identity.
Conspiracy__@reddit
We’ve averaged 100+ returns every year for the past several years.
vonhoother@reddit
Banned from a platform I loathe -- how dreadful!
tnemmoc_on@reddit
Must be an awful lot for that to happen.
Zincktank@reddit
Luckily it's not very hard to get a new email and create a new account.
Eastern-Astronomer-6@reddit
Yeah because amazon isn't smart enough to think about that.
They use IP addresses to identifier users for something as innocuous as the reviews.
phanda-exe@reddit
No they do not. The resources needed for that would outweigh the cost of essentially banning customers.
phanda-exe@reddit
And if they did, you can get a new IP by unplugging your modem for 15 minutes or ask Comcast to reprovision your connection
Zincktank@reddit
This hasnt been my experience. I had my Amazon account banned from giving reviews because I was critical of one single product and that seller went ballistic.
My wife (who lives with me) has her own account and she is willing able to give reviews.
Munnin41@reddit

I know someone who saved thousands on their wedding doing this. They used my project management software to organize the different stores, retailers etc. and return locations and hired a moving van and had 3+ friends helping them box everything up.
Elmnt65@reddit
That’s dedication
Factsoverfictions222@reddit
We bought a dog outfit to protect the dog after surgery and had to pay about $18 to ship it back because it didn’t fit. We have Prime. It shouldn’t have cost us anything but this Amazon seller makes you pay shipping to return.
ragingstallion1@reddit
Never worked for Amazon but worked at another large retailer and people were banned for too many returns. Be careful.
fightmastermind@reddit
A lot of this screws over smaller non-Amazon sellers who have to agree to Amazon’s return policies to get on the platform.
UnitedEggs@reddit
Eh, their fault for supporting Amazon.
fightmastermind@reddit
I think you misspelled at the mercy of a monopoly
UnitedEggs@reddit
Hardly. There are other options to push your wares without using Amazon.
ajanonymous_2019@reddit
My wedding ring feel off while brushing snow off my car. My wife ordered a metal detector and it was delivered the next day where I promptly found the ring in a gutter beneath some leaves. Sent it back that night. I love that woman lol
3ntz@reddit
This is unethical in the sense that what you “borrow” and then return likely goes into the garbage.
I get the work the system angle, but it just produces more waste from the products themselves, shopping them back and forth. You’re essentially making expensive items single use and it’s just wrong.
Consider buying and selling on marketplace as a next-to-new item? I known many that would love to score a lightly used tool for example.
luminara33@reddit
Is this still available?
HoleInYourMesh@reddit
Friend of mine had his power cut for a day due to maintenance. Bought a laptop at a big retail store, played Factorio in a bar for a day, returned the next day no questions asked.
Paiges1329@reddit
Also most returns get thrown away since just more cost effective to not deal with if just consider that too 😔
plzdontlietomee@reddit
The only unethical thing about this plan is that Amazon calculates it to be more cost efficient to dump returns into landfills than restock them.
Honcho_Rodriguez@reddit
This is at least somewhat false.
Amazon just re-ships many returns to the next buyer.
HardlyGermane@reddit
Depends on the product. Many items get sold to “bin stores” in bulk.
Source: A friend owns a bin store and buys truck loads of Amazon returns
trowawaid@reddit
No, it's almost entirely true
Nicoberzin@reddit
There's a great video from Climate Town about just this, most of the returns just get sent to a landfill or resold in pallets
drake90001@reddit
Bingo. 90% of returns don’t even make it back to warehouse.
IWantALargeFarva@reddit
I live in a town that pretty much no one has ever heard of. Not like a big city or anything. We have 2 stores in town that sell “mystery packages” that are Amazon and Walmart returns. If our little town can sustain 2 stores like this, how many packages are out there?
drake90001@reddit
That’s where most returns go.
thestrible@reddit
Amazon seller here, it is less I loose money to get return back to me then let them "destroy it".
Munnin41@reddit
There's a pretty big difference between amazon itself and you as a 3rd party seller though. You're essentially just renting a shelf at the store
thestrible@reddit
No it is exactly the same thing I am FBA so I send my product yo amazon and they manage everything. Costumer havr the prime shipping with my product.
Si when someone buy it, open the box and return it only because they don't like the color (for exemple) then amazon destroy it if I deceide to not pay to receive it back.
justanotherassassin@reddit
Just adding in my own experience here: they sent me the wrong size for a shirt, and when I contacted support, they just told me to keep it lol.
On the other hand, I did "borrow" an expensive laptop charger when I forgot mine at home during a vacation.
Honcho_Rodriguez@reddit
That’s not what I am referring to.
If they request you send an item back, often they just re-sell it.
justanotherassassin@reddit
I know it isn't what you were referring to, just adding my own experience for the sake of discussion.
FinanciallySecure9@reddit
Have you heard about Amazon mystery boxes? For $50 you get brand new or gently used Amazon stuff.
I gather people together, everyone pays $50, and we open them laugh or be disappointed or get excited, keep, trade or sell. Each box has multiple items. If you like a fun surprise, this is the way to go.
seitz38@reddit
Amazon warehouses these items and put them in to a number of categories: 1. Sellable - anything that can literally be put back on sale as a new item 2. Unsellable - items that are put into storage and charge the vendor a daily fee for housing. 3. Refurbished - items that are sold as b-stock 4. Liquidation - items that are not able to be resold or b-stock, and the vendor no longer wants them. These go to the highest bidder. 5. Donation - self explanatory 6. Disposal - shit that legally cannot be sold or given away. Think diapers, toilet paper that’s unsealed, etc.
Fatboy1402@reddit
This is untrue. A huge quantity of items end up being destroyed and or disposed of. Reselling isn’t common. Refurbishing is a rarity.

Munnin41@reddit
They made that illegal in the EU last year, so feel free to do it here
arealpandabear@reddit
I’ve definitely complained about Halloween costumes/clothes that were clearly used and returned. It was a huge waste of time for me to return gross items (deodorant marks on pits) and attempt to order a new item.
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
Ouch! I didn’t know that!
drfeelsgoood@reddit
Same thing with large box stores, Walmart, Home Depot, target. They don’t want to be known for selling returns product at a discount, because then people would return just to buy it when it’s out out on discount. So they throw it in the trash compactor.
pettymacgee@reddit
This is absolutely one of those things where the actual costs to the environment along its supply chain and short life cycle far outweighs any personal financial ‘savings’…
Definitely wouldn’t get you ‘good place’ points.
But hey viva capitalism right and people are not going to care about this part let alone scroll down enough to see
Arnas_Z@reddit
This is ULPT, of course no one cares.
JAH_1315@reddit
I think you’d find this video informative on the industry of Amazon returns
GRAIN_DIV_20@reddit
Climate Town hell yeah
Stormy8888@reddit
Somehow that doesn't surprise me.
HausWife88@reddit
You can do this to other places as well. Wal mart target. Etc. also buy something you need and return your old used one in its place
Reddisuspendmeagain@reddit
I do this all the time…
HausWife88@reddit
Me too lmao Especially for expensive shit
Reddisuspendmeagain@reddit
If I could do this for Apple products or ones with serial numbers…I’d order a new iPad yesterday
romcomtom2@reddit
Aaaaand this is how returns get ruined for everyone.
But good looking out for #1, am I right?
skookum-chuck@reddit
Oh no, and unethical post, in an unethical sub....
NuclearPopTarts@reddit
Amazon did not let me return my Swedish Made Penis Enlarger
Valpo1996@reddit

Common-Direction3996@reddit
Walmart. Nordstrom and Kohls all have amazing return policies.
I returned a VERY used with dirt still in the canister vacuum to Walmart (didnt even have the original box or anything)
Same with returning clearly used hiking boots to kohl's (with no box or tags)
Just don't be a douche about it and use the pro tip if you're in need
McDoom---@reddit
Good. Fuck Walmart.
Spazecowboy@reddit
All these posts on how it goes directly to landfill and it’s OP’s fault for doing this. Not Amazon’s fault for throwing away returns.
Also have you noticed we’re in ULPTs?
ilikedrhouse@reddit
Most of the returns go straight into a landfill because it’s cheaper for Amazon to throw them away than it is to rebook the inventory and resell it.
Doing what you’re doing is literally poisoning the planet one Amazon return at a time.
Seriously. C’mon man.
PapayaNo6997@reddit
You know a lot of time it isn’t Bezoz or Amazon that takes the brunt of the expenses right? It’s independent sellers. And not all of them might be big enough to be able to deal with this loss. This isn’t unethical. This is absolute assholery
TrashMouthDiver@reddit
Walmart will take anything back. Food is the only thing they REQUIRE a receipt for.
We've returned everything you can think of. EVERYTHING. Used vacuum cleaner, hairbrush, make up, nail polish, shoes, clothes, games, mouthwash, doesn't matter and they don't care.
Side note, the only time they DID care was when I went out of town for a while and came home to discover my hubby had gone on a huge shopping spree to furnish our theretofore empty house: TV stand, dinning table, chairs, deck furniture set with umbrella, bedside tables, probably other stuff I've since forgotten about. Like $1100 worth of shit. I made him take it all back because you can't pay the water bill with an umbrella. THAT Walmart banned him for life LOL (although they never took his pic or anything and no one's ever said boo to him since)
TBLivinfree@reddit
Quick reminder for ppl - approx 1/3 of the companies that sell on Amazon are 3rd party companies and small businesses & that # is growing. If you want to do this, pls make sure that the actual SELLER is Amazon. Hope this helps.
tjoloi@reddit
Drop shipping isn't a "small business" worth saving
steveorga@reddit
Most of the small businesses are not drop shippers. Amazon is trying to get rid of them.
apocketfullofpocket@reddit
Exactly. Most of these "small businesses" are drop shipping, or importing cheap stuff from Ali baba, express, ect...
strangelove4564@reddit
Hey, I will have no negative talk about my top-of-the-line Vexidrift, Jollipeak, and Qoomsphere brands.
Doctadalton@reddit
My favorites are the brands with completely nonsensical 5 letter names like Gooba or Xyxyr. it’s like someone just slammed on the keyboard to come up with the brand names
Slawpy_Joe@reddit
Most products on Amazon are already AliExpress and Temu products anyways, everything comes from china. Just search for a USB cable on both and you'll see the same products
apocketfullofpocket@reddit
Yep exactly.
OriginallyWhat@reddit
It's hard to drop ship with Amazon. More likely they're private label companies. Custom products designed for their brand, they just outsource the manufacturing. You'd be surprised how many brands you use and recognize are private label.
con247@reddit
It should be banned because that business will disappear and not be able to be held liable in case of a fire or product injury
wouldntknowever@reddit
Except drop shipping isn’t really a thing on Amazon. To be prime eligible you must supply bulk products up front,
tjoloi@reddit
Sorry, I should have worded it as "AliExpress resellers'
Dawn_of_an_Era@reddit
Who gives a shit about those companies? If we only wanted to rip off Amazon, that would make this an ethical tip.
SteelFlexInc@reddit
Or just chinese junk drop shippers...
IllMutation@reddit
Yeah, you can filter the seller and set it to: Amazon on the left part on desktop.
736384826@reddit
lots of so called small companies sell crappy products and present them like gold, several bribe you with gift cards for five star reviews, others price gauge, most sell stuff from China. Zero sympathy from me, it’s not like we’re talking about handmade stuff from Etsy or something. Just because they are small doesn’t necessarily mean they are ethical
jasonbay13@reddit
amazon is a losing proposition for small businesses, why would the # be growing?
if i find a product i want on amazon, it is usually cheaper on aliexpress for the same exact thing, though it does take longer to arrive.
if it's a genuine product i need, i search the web for a small business and get it at a cheaper price while giving the small business more profit AT THE SAME TIME. same as ebay, i find a seller - i search them up for a phone number and buy direct. usually i sort by distance to see if local pickup is an option also - while getting their contact info to bypass ebay's 13.5% + sale fee + reporting to government to pay taxes on.
i am all for small-businesses and hate to see the scalping these large corps are doing to them.
i buy from amazon when i think i may need to return it or need it quickly.
it's sad to see newegg no longer ships from the states. best buy has a poor selection. amazon doesnt have good shipping times on many motherboards since newegg went overseas.
HausWife88@reddit
Aliexpress is actually pretty fast. No not two day shipping. But i ordered my daughter a shark hair dryer for Christmas, 120 on aliexpress. 349 anywhere else
jasonbay13@reddit
in my case a pool sand filter for $170 where used locally was $200+ and $280+ new on amazon or anywhere else. same brand as amazon was selling too.
but as i was doing it to be nice to my aunt and in exchange for using the pool my uncle f'd me out pretty good since it wasnt done the same day it showed up. goodbye aunt and uncle. they wont miss me and neither will i them. - more of a lesson, dont do things for people. stick with your normal job and do no more.
Eastern-Astronomer-6@reddit
There are way more brands that are Amazon only sellers than you would think. There are literal marketplaces for just selling an amazon only business. They can be quite lucrative. It gives business access to a huge customer base it otherwise wouldn't be able to reach affordably.
jasonbay13@reddit
i do hate it when the ebay sellers are like, we exclusively sell on ebay and will never not pay them their crazy high rates even if you gave us a million $ - perhaps ebay has a reputation for calling sellers pretending to be a customer and then banning them for selling outside of ebay? i've never heard of that happening outside of ebay messages though.
yes, amazon and ebay are great advertisement - to look them up elsewhere.
User_Many_Errors@reddit
Not after Amazon copies all of their products and pushes them to the bottom of the page.
highlife1@reddit
It's closer to 2/3
food_of_doom@reddit
Seeing as most returns end up in a landfill, no thanks.
showerzofsparkz@reddit
People like this ruin it for everyone
trowawaid@reddit
Not to ruin the fun, but the only thing it'll probably do is fuck up the world...
Aka, wouldn't hurt Bezos/Amazon financially and also just go straight to a landfill.
Internal_Essay9230@reddit
It's especially good for consumables like batteries. Order new ones and send the old ones back. Oh, and enjoy the inauguration Jeff! 😁
youreyeah@reddit
I ordered batteries on Amazon once and once they arrived, I realized I ordered the wrong ones. I tried to return them, but they just gave me a refund and told me to keep them. Do with that info what you will 🤷♀️
Munnin41@reddit
This works with a lot of small stuff. Batteries, cables, plugs etc. Essentially anything where the cost to ship it back to them is higher than the profit margin
1995droptopz@reddit
It also applies to anything that is considered hazmat. I bought some sealant and it was the wrong color and they wouldn’t let me return it, but they would let me get a refund since it was also conveniently damaged as well.
Creative-Sea955@reddit
You still need to return many items. Most of these items go on pallet sale.
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
Lmao
Internal_Essay9230@reddit
It's heartbreaking that "borrowing from Bezos" might cut into the funds he uses to support the service yacht that trails his main yacht, eh? Some really cruel, selfish people on here!
bigpoppa973@reddit
I think it is a little worse than that. Billionaires don't ride on their yachts with a support yacht. They ship their yacht to their destination and then fly on their private jet and use the yacht as a hotel. Here's a pretty good video on it. If people did this tip, he would not be able to afford to ship his boat on a boat and he might actually have to travel on it.

Fishbits@reddit
This is why I get so much used crap from Amazon now. Ugh :(
PermanentlySalty@reddit
Additional ULPT: if you have a participating Kohl’s near you, you can return your Amazon purchase there for free without the need for a shipping label to a box to ship it in (you still need to bring it in the manufacturer’s original packaging), and then Kohl’s gives you some kind of coupon for their store. I’ve gotten coupons for as much as 25% off before.
pierrekrahn@reddit
I get the big advantages of doing this, but man this is not helping global warming lol
YouSilly5490@reddit

pm_mba@reddit
Because of shit like this Amazon doesn’t have a return policy in India. Don’t abuse it.
KheyotecGoud@reddit
This used to work great. Last year Amazon was purchased by a new company and now even legitimate people and legitimate returns are being denied. Too many returns in a period will ban your amazon account now regardless of the reason.
They went late stage capitalism.
Careless_Effect_1997@reddit
This is why we cant have nice things.
OnionSquared@reddit

ejbalington@reddit
If you have a Costco membership, they have a very generous return policy. My friend bought a couch from them and returned it like 2 years later when it broke.
intruda1@reddit
I bought a new mini hand vacuum from Amazon. Someone had obviously purchased a new one and returned the same model in the new box that had clearly been very used for a few years and was in really rough shape, with a full canister of dirt and that is what I received from Amazon. Needless to say I was livid and disgusted. Who does that??? 🤬
Humble-Kiwi-5272@reddit
Op, probably
cannibalparrot@reddit
Remember that if the listing is “fulfilled by Amazon” it’s not Amazon selling it, and doing this will just screw some random person.
Dawn_of_an_Era@reddit
And that’s a problem why? This is supposed to be an unethical subreddit, right?
IllMutation@reddit
I thought this meant was Amazon, guess just needs to say seller?
o0Frost0o@reddit
Please please please don't do this with privately sold things.
Saw a story last week where I private author who published their ebook on amazon.
People were buying their books, reading them and then returning them to get the money back. The author ended up in debt because they would (obviously) spend their money that they have earnt but then have to pay to refund the books.
Dawn_of_an_Era@reddit
Are you forgetting this is quite literally a sub for doing unethical things?
LusoInvictus@reddit
TIL books are refundable... Batteries and DVD/Blu-ray are too but it's just stupid.
ongoldenwaves@reddit

ILoveStealing@reddit
Didn’t realize unethical LPTs drew the line at the environment.
Dawn_of_an_Era@reddit
Unethical LPTs actually draw the line at unethical.
People somehow think screwing over Amazon is unethical, when in reality, this tip belongs in the ethical LPT sub.
clairegardner23@reddit
Yeah agreed. If anything, everyone should just be cancelling Prime if possible. That’s the only way to stick it to Bezos. This is terrible for the environment.
strangelove4564@reddit
But where will I get my Rixijoy combination shower speaker and aromatherapy diffuser?
peskyboner1@reddit
Also this doesn't hurt Amazon, they just factor it into the price. The house always wins.
FinancialEvidence@reddit
What, it just means their prices are higher so someone else can come in and do it cheaper. It definitely hurts amazon, but probably isn't good for consumers either.
BatSphincter@reddit

raewrite@reddit

iMakeMoneyiLoseMoney@reddit

Dabcola_@reddit
Pretty sure they sometimes just tell you to keep it too lol
The_Limper@reddit
I bought an engine air filter for my car via Amazon, and upon opening it, it looked used. Confirmed when I found the dead bee in it lol. So some people just buy stuff on Amazon then send back the item they were replacing.

Yeah, most of what you return to Amazon gets dumped into the trash heap to rot and become pollution, so.... Yes! This is unethical on multiple levels! Nice job.
Navitus@reddit
You know, this is more ethical than you realize.
_User_Name_Fail@reddit
I have only been in this sub for a short time, but there is something I think very few people here understand. If you do something "unethical" but you do it to Amazon, it is NOT unethical. Total_Fail_6994@reddit
Here's another: often, you need one inexpensive item, but they're only sold in large quantities. Take one and return the rest.
poopsmith27@reddit
60% of products on amazon are from 3rd party sellers, aka small business owners, meaning if you do this you’re hurting them.
And I’d guess 90% of people don’t know where to look and tell what’s a 3rd party seller and what’s amazon.
BlindRhino76@reddit
100% correct. I have been defrauded so many times with this. You are not getting over on Amazon, you are taking money from my kids when you swap your old item for a new one and return it. I have to eat that cost not the Billionare you think is.
LifeguardStatus7649@reddit
I've done this a few times with Walmart - I call it the Walmart Rental Program
Fit-Werewolf-422@reddit
Try being honest and you will go farther in this life.
MisChef@reddit
This is EXACTLY how Amazon got started. Bezos had to make a minimum order, so he would order the one book he wanted and 10 other books he didn't, and then return the other 10 books.
Fit-Werewolf-422@reddit
Honesty is the best policy and Amazon has been going straight downhill.I don't care about what Bezos did, right is right and wrong is wrong. Continually amazed how people post on Reddit their plans to take advantage of businesses.
Somewhere_Unfair@reddit
You might even say they're being unethical!
Fit-Werewolf-422@reddit

pettymacgee@reddit
Morality and consideration toward Amazon or Bezos isn’t necessary at all, but maybe more so towards the environment and collective interests of sustainable living, etc.
Gauging by the ‘low return’ due to influx of wife’s packages comment, they’re actually probably consistent supporters of Bezos and his Amazon model of hyper-consumption~

Don’t do this to just one retailer. Cycle through them all.
weedmylips1@reddit
Another ULPT: if something breaks that you ordered from Amazon and it's out of the return window. Just order another one and then wait until next the end of the return window and return the broken one
The_Real_Scrotus@reddit
You can do this with Lowes and Home Depot too. If you need a tool for something you aren't going to use again, just buy it, use it, and return it. As long as you aren't doing it often enough to be suspicious they'll take it back no problem.
plzdntfndme@reddit

LarryLobster69@reddit
You can do the same with local stores. One time I needed a drill and a heat gun, bought them at Home depot, used them, packaged them back up and returned them the next day for a full refund.
Ok-Equivalent8260@reddit
Damn, if you’re that poor, just say that.

bemad123@reddit
When Amazon launched in India it had a similar policy. People here misused it to the point that now almost every other item is replacement only. No returns
Emergency_Elephant@reddit
Check to see if your local library has a library of things. A lot of libraries have physical items you can check out and take home to use. If they don't, check the next library system to see if they have a library of things. Figure out how to fake an address in the area (I'd recommend getting a friend involved and sending some letters addressed to you to their address). Request a library card and ask about checking out whatever items you need

Vertex138@reddit
Ha ha yeah I work for Staples. We do free Amazon returns. There's an immense amount of people that do this.
Bister_Mungle@reddit
I was buying a hepa filter for my air purifier once and bought an open box one for cheaper thinking "oh they probably bought it and realized it was the wrong one and sent it back."
Wrong. It was a completely brown and grey used air filter in an open box. Either not a single person that handled the box at any point from return to me receiving it had opened it to check (it wasn't even taped), or nobody gave a shit at all, which I think might have been more likely.
I buy a decent amount of used stuff and every time except that time I've gotten what I paid for so one sour experience won't stop me but I will keep my expectations in check going forward and will likely no longer buy anything used that is potentially consumable.
IllMutation@reddit
I don’t think I fully grasped your comment, but I’ve bought things off Amazon that looked completely used before.
Rom-TheVacuousSpider@reddit
I’m going to partially copy my comment from a recent post:
Spend some time on the Amazon sub and you will realize YMMV with this tip. Amazon has cracked down on returns and switched to more incompetent customer service agents.
There is a chance your refund is reduced, not tracked properly, or denied. CS agents sometimes straight up lie nowadays to get you off the chat.
Going to also point out that returned stock can and is being sold as new by Amazon. Incompetent and overworked employees tend to not check every returned item thoroughly. So your item may end up being sent right back out to another person. Including a third party buyer because stock can be shared sometimes.
So please use correct reasons for return for best results. “Wrong size” or “didn’t want anymore” tend to not get you the full refund. Reasons that would be the seller’s fault tend to get you full refunds. Please use “damaged” or “defective” if your item actually is being returned in that condition.
Just bringing you up to speed on the changes.
IllMutation@reddit
I definitely need to switch to “damage” or “defective.” It’s frustrating that now you’re obligated to provide a reason why and have to write.
Magic_Sandwiches@reddit
lol that sounds like Amazon's problem not r/UnethicalLifeProTip's problem
Rom-TheVacuousSpider@reddit
It could become your problem if your return is denied or deducted from. Just trying to warn folks.
Matto_McFly_81@reddit
Doesn't this hurt the independent Amazon sellers? You're only sticking it to people like you.
IllMutation@reddit
You simply need to filter it by seller: Amazon, so you can be certain that it’s an Amazon product.
memevala_baniya@reddit
I don't think it's possible to return small electronic products such as earbuds or mouse because amazon has changed its return policy from 7 days replacement to 7 days service center replacement.
Previously i returned a few items which were first being replaced and if you still don't like the product, then it will be returned. Is it still possible with the new '7 days service center replacement ' policy?
IllMutation@reddit
Yeah, electronics are a no-go. iPhones and Macs could be done, but that was years ago.
TopLeftBurner@reddit
Can I return old light bulbs in the new light bulb pack and get a refund?
IllMutation@reddit
Absolutely, I ordered some Govee bulbs (a pair), and I just returned a normal IKEA smart bulb old (just one) and got a refund.
TempusFugitTicToc@reddit
Yes!
ReflectionNo492@reddit
Unrelated but an item library is a genius idea! (in an ideal world)
damselindetech@reddit
They have some in major cities in Canada
Unhappy-Bluejay-6518@reddit
We have one in Hull, UK. It’s brilliant. Pay as you go membership has recently gone up from £1 to £5 annually which is obviously a drop in the ocean for the amount you get out of it. Couldn’t tell you how many £100s we have saved in not buying tools to renovate the house! Costs about £4.50 a week for most items.
Think they also do an £80 membership without the rental charges
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
Yes it is! Some areas have them in the UK
boxofrabbits@reddit
Yeah Reading has one. It's brilliant. $ £20 a year.
Jegan237@reddit
My city has one! Paid something like £6 to hire an orbit sander for a week to some DIY work at home. Saved me coughing up £50-70 for something I'd barely use again.
Then when my dad passed I donated a load of his tools to the same place.
llelibro@reddit
We’re not in this sub to talk about morals, but you should keep in mind that for many independent sellers on Amazon, the products you return have to be disposed of.
s3r1ous_n00b@reddit
Many business sell on Amazon but are not owned by Amazon. Try not to screw over some local business trying to keep up by using FBA. look for listings that say "sold by amazon"
nukem266@reddit
Fuck Amazon, shop locally.
OmegaGoober@reddit
The technical term for this is “retail rental,” and it was popularized by conference and trade show booths realizing it was cheaper to buy and then return things like monitors than shipping them in from the home office.
NoPrimary1049@reddit
Fuck, if doing this make second Amazon account not tied to the main(if you have books, audible, music, movies) in the event it does get closed.
Also please don't do this to the sold by XYZ. They may or may not be a small business on the platform.
Look for "ships and sold by bald fuck dick bozo"
evilbrent@reddit
Ironically this would be an awesome public good. An anarchic utopia would have such a public repository.
Luckylandcruiser@reddit
At this point, I buy shit from Amazon just to return it. I don’t give a fuck. Buy it use it return it whatever I don’t care. And if I buy something from Amazon and it breaks and I’m outside of the return window, I buy it again and send back the broken one.
R0D18@reddit
Stealing from large companies is a victimless crime
Various-Cut-1070@reddit
My wife went on a trip with the kids and I have about 2 weeks to myself. I bought an Xbox Series X and returned it after. No questions asked.
quiet_pastafarian@reddit
This is dumb. Don't do this.
You think amazon return items just go back to the warehouse? They do not. The vast majority just end up in a landfill.
Also, doing this will raise prices for EVERYONE, making Amazon more expensive. You think that free shipping is actually free? Rofl, no dude, you're still paying for it. Everyone is.
Also, do this enough times, and your account will be flagged and get banned.
Amazon is so prolific, it is effectively public infrastructure at this point. Quit messing with it, it's going to make everything worse for the rest of us.
Switchbladesaint@reddit
Do this too much and your account WILL get banned
Fat_Head_Carl@reddit
People do this with home Depot... A very specific tool you only need once.
seitz38@reddit
Generally items below $500 don’t incur heavier speculation.
thaneliness@reddit
I love doing this. I will buy something, use it for a trip than return it.
Just did it with some $200 snowboard Goggles lol.
Fuck you bezos
Balaka888@reddit
And 90% of those returns will end up in landfill. Good job.
jrosalind@reddit
No they won't, they get sent out to the next person who orders it, the amount of opened and broken amazon items ive received is ridiculous.
Zehkelly@reddit
I did this with an expensive bridesmaid dress I was only going to wear once, definitely use it sparingly but great for items you only need once or twice!
freem6n@reddit
Did this with those 400 dollar Sony headphones for a vacation. Used them on the plane there and back and returned them as good as new.
lexypher@reddit
I call that the Walmart rental.
Somewhere_Unfair@reddit
I did this with Home Depot. When I was installing a replacement kitchen sink, I needed a sink drain wrench. I noticed that I could use it without removing the packaging, so after I was done, I returned it and got my money back.
amanuensisninja@reddit
This is also a good way to get a new version of something you already own that stopped working after the return window.
ElPlatanaso2@reddit
Yeah you're about to get your account banned and at the very most, make returns for difficult for actual paying customers
GRAIN_DIV_20@reddit
And afterwards buy it back from a liquidation center for pennies on the dollar
Odd_Track3447@reddit
Sometimes I don’t even consider this unethical given how many crap products Amazon has listed. You buy something to try it and discover it’s nowhere near fit for purpose once you do use it.
Own_City_1084@reddit
Use it carefully? Do you know where you are?
Impossible_One_6658@reddit
Do you also buy a TV from costco to watch the superbowl then return it the next day?
Buy a dress at a store for an event and keep the tag on and return it?
You are tactless.
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
I think you’re on the wrong sub
1badd@reddit
How is this unethical?
TheTealBandit@reddit
Unfortunately due to people doing this they have nerfed returns where I live. It was fun while it lasted
iWearSkinyTies@reddit
Same with Home Depot, they take anything back
TheGoodBunny@reddit
Bezos catching strays even though he hasn't been CEO of Amazon for years!! 😆
stillwithyuo@reddit
Borrow it? No, I’ll get refunded and get to keep my item
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
lol how?
stillwithyuo@reddit
I’ve saved over 1000 dollars from big companies
LuckyTrashFox@reddit
Climate Town and Danny Gonzalez just did videos together about amazon returns, its really bad for the environment for a number of reasons.
Jimlad73@reddit (OP)
TLDW?
LuckyTrashFox@reddit
Eh, yeah but also I have a kid and a bunch of young nieces and nephews, so I’m still hoping they’ll get to have something of a life
reidybobeidy89@reddit
TLDW- too long didnt watch. They were looking for a summary of the videos.
LuckyTrashFox@reddit
Oh thats funny I assumed they meant “Too Late Dont Worry” 😆
Unhooked-@reddit
Do it from Walmart for 90 days usage.
-BirdDogActual@reddit
And then it gets sent to the next buyer. It’s like an asshole version of “pay it forward”
BasicallyGuessing@reddit
Uh… this is ULPT. Clearly the most UNethical thing to do is BUY it from Amazon. All other options are doing the world a service.
