What are the most "cursed" American sports teams?
Posted by ibridoangelico@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 713 comments
One thing that is truly great about American sports is the natural cycle of success.
10 years ago Who would've thought that the Lions and Bills woukd be some of the best teams in their NFL conference? Or that the Patriots would be one of the worst teams in the league?
It fits the American spirit that every team will eventually get a shot at "their year", but some teams just seem to get more unlucky every year?
Which teams are the most cursed?
BringMeDatBussy@reddit
The tennessee titans are cursed with the team remaining in the adams family forever

New England Revolution. The Buffalo Bills of MLS.

J-E-T-S!
Obi2@reddit
The Pacers: dealt with Jordan forever and only team to take MJ to game 7 in the playoffs eastern conference finals. Then when Jordan retires they made it to the finals only to go against Shaq and Kobe. Oh then with a whole new team end up with LeBron blocking them from getting to the finals, took him to a game 7 multiple times under multiple teams (PG13 once and Victor Oldapio once). Their best chance ever didn’t win a championship because 3/4 of the way through the season the Detroit crowd decided to start throwing beer at our players and one of the players lost their mind and went into the stands to fight. Lost season.
Then our best players go on to get injured every time we have hope.
Granger hurts knee never the same, PG13 breaks leg in offseason and then a year later decides he wants a trade, Sabonis injured in playoffs, Oladipo tears quad never the same, Bubble Warren hurts ankle and never the same.

Historically it's the Lions
MacPhisto__@reddit
Vikings. They're a good team historically. Our all time record is solidly above .500 but we've been to four SuperBowls but lost them all. And we have a habit of choking big games. As a Vikings fan, it is pure pain. Being the worst of the best or best of the worst. We Vikings fans are pulling for the Bills for a Super Bowl win cause we know what it's like to be so close and to lose everytime.

Cleveland Indians. So cursed that their curse is stronger than the Cubs legendary curse. So cursed that they changed their name to try and break it…
kay_rah@reddit
The Cleveland curse is 77 years old. The Cubs curse was 108 years and the Red Sox curse was 86 years. Still a ways to go to attain legendary status. Also, the city not even being remotely comparable to Boston or Chicago doesn’t help.
bearlysane@reddit
And when the Chicago curse met the Cleveland curse, who won? Which curse was “stronger” when it actually mattered?
kay_rah@reddit
Chicago’s. Cleveland hadn’t and still hasn’t suffered enough yet.
bearlysane@reddit
That’s certainly one of the takeaways of all time, sure.
AdmiralAkbar1@reddit
Maybe it'll turn out the name was because their stadium was built on an Indian burial ground.
bearlysane@reddit
Now that they’re named after a bridge, I’m sure the bridge will fall down or need to be replaced or something.

Here is about the best version you'll find
It's one of those movies that's been 'lost", not carried on any streaming service, no DVD's ever made and I've only found a copy on Ebay that was VHS. A shame, such a great list of stars and a great story.

Capri2256@reddit
For comedy, I agree 100%. But, Field of Dreams is my favorite.
eapaul80@reddit
I tend to agree. Field of Dreams is fantastic
Conchobair@reddit
I'd put these in the running also: The Sandlot, Field of Dreams, The Natural, 42, The Naked Gun.
eapaul80@reddit
I’m just coming back to this conversation because we talked about Major League, and then today we got the news of Bob Uecker passing away 😢 He was perfect in that movie.

I need to see the Bills actually win the Super Bowl because I think them losing it 4 years in a row in the 90s screams curse to me
CbusJohn83@reddit
The Vikings have lost four superbowls too, just not consecutively.
yo_mo_mama@reddit
I think no MN pro team has won their respective whole enchilada. I could do some research, but I'm sure folks will weigh in. Husband is from MN and he's mentioned it. His heart breaks all the time
Bzz22@reddit
“Cursed” = MN sports teams.
1.). The current longest streak of combined seasons in the big 4 (nfl, nhl, mlb, nba) without winning a championship of any city witn at least 3. Minnesota has gone about 135 seasons and the next closest is like 30-35.
2.) The Vikings have the most playoff losses in the super bowl era.
3.). The Twins have the record for longest playoff losing streak at 18 games!!!! From 2004-2020.
3.). A Minnesota professional Hockey Team (the land of hockey) has not made the Stanley cup final since 1981. 43 years!!!
4.). The Timberwolves have never been to the NBA championship in 35 years of existence. They have only won 4 playoff series in that time.
Sir7empest@reddit
The Twins are the only team that has won anything: 1924, 1987, and 1991.
CbusJohn83@reddit
I think the Lakers did when they were the Minneapolis Lakers, but that was like in the 40s or 50s though.
TywinDeVillena@reddit
So, they are like the Atlético de Madrid of American football?
Atleti lost the 1974 European Cup final in the replay (the match had been a draw, and there was no extra time back then), the 2014 Champions League final against Real Madrid on extra time, and the 2016 Champions League final against Real Madrid on penalty shootout.
Three times they came so very close, and three times they lost.
Chicago1871@reddit
Worse! Because it happened in 4 years consecutively.
Imagine qualifying to 4 champions league finals and losing every one.
EffectiveSalamander@reddit
But the Vikings do have one NFL championship. Sure, it was the last NFL championship before the merger, and they lost the Super Bowl, but it's technically correct to say they won an NFL championship.
Positive-Avocado-881@reddit
Tbh 3 times in 4 years after already losing it in the decade is basically the same thing
CbusJohn83@reddit
And we also have the record for most playoff losses with 32! I love this team.
theguineapigssong@reddit
This is my answer right up until they actually win one. After that it's the Cleveland Browns who are a bona fide poverty franchise. What's more cursed, to repeatedly fall just short or to never experience hope at all and thus exist forever in a twilight realm of sadness?
Gigantischmann@reddit
The Browns and the remaining fans 100% deserve it at this point

Also eagles fan, if we can’t win it then I wouldn’t mind the bills winning it, but not against us.

It was cocaine and no rules, plus the Cowboys absolutely stacked team from the worst trade in history. There was a player for those teams who went on to play for the Elway Broncos and said it was night and day with actual curfews and rules before the Super Bowl.

SeparateMongoose192@reddit
I used to go to Philadelphia Wings games a lot in the 90s and early 2000s, and the Bandits were a great rival.
Savings-Safe1257@reddit
The Wings being down is actually really bad for the league. Strong Albany, Buffalo, Toronto, and Philly teams is really the base they need.

Semi-Pros-and-Cons@reddit
Going way back to the '20s, there's also the "Staley Swindle." Basically, the Buffalo All-Americans were the League champions, but Chicago talked them into playing an unofficial game after the season was supposed to end. Chicago won, and talked the League into counting the game, which by the rules at the time, gave them the championship.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1921_NFL_Championship_controversy
Better-informed people than myself also suggest that Buffalo could have won the first Super Bowl, if only they had beaten the Chiefs in the AFL Championship game. It wasn't a close game, ending 31 to 7. But during the season, the Bills allowed the fewest points in the AFL for the third year in a row, and had scored the second-most points in the league that year-- good on both sides of the ball. And based on Buffalo's match-ups against Green Bay, I guess it would have looked pretty favorable for the Bills... who had won the AFL title the previous two years.
SweetFrostedJesus@reddit
I just recently learned that the Buffalo Sabres exist. It was a clue in the NYT crossword and I thought "no that can't be right, Buffalo doesn't even have a hockey team." Now I'm just sad for them.

SleepyD7@reddit
One good thing to take away from the Chiefs winning again would be that it will just eat at Jerry Jones for being so stupid to runoff Jimmy Johnson. He could have had a 3peat in the 90s.
uhbkodazbg@reddit
I’ve been a Lions fan since I was a little kid. There’s been so much awful football since then and I can’t help but expect disappointment this year as well.
phonemannn@reddit
If we can just make it to the Super Bowl then that’s all I could ever ask for. Winning would be cloud 9, but I think just making it means the fire is still there for the years ahead, perhaps not a quick flash but the start of sustained success?
Spackledgoat@reddit
If the Lions make the Super Bowl and lose, I sincerely hope they can leverage it into success in the same way as the 2002 Raiders did after their loss.
phonemannn@reddit
No matter what at least we didn’t lose to the Rams :)

Like Wilford Brimley in The Natural: "I wanted to win that pennant worse than I wanted any goddamned thing in my life. You'd think I could just this once, wouldn't you? I didn't care nothing about the Series. Win or lose, I would have been satisfied."

CFBCoachGuy@reddit
Atlanta sports teams have a long history of being mediocre, and when they aren’t mediocre, they find ways to produce crippling disappointment
flammasher3@reddit
I'd say the Braves and the Bulldogs finally broke the curse together in 2021, but the Falcons are still doing their best to keep it alive. Before that Georgia teams would go from "good, almost there, but just bad enough to disappoint you in the end" to "just alright/mediocre".
NitrosGone803@reddit
Don't forget about the Georgia Bulldogs going to the College World Series finals in 2008 and losing to Fresno State.
But yeah i think the Braves finally winning in 2021 and the Bulldogs winning natties broke the "curse"

EconomistSuper7328@reddit
Dale Murphy left and they won 14? divisions in a row.
t3h_shammy@reddit
The guardians win the division all the time only to flop in the playoffs. It’s the whole winning the World Series thing that kills us
KobeBufkinBestKobe@reddit
Guardians absolutely a great answer but Rockies are just bad, that's not 'cursed.' How the Braves season ended just from 2010-2013 was way more bad voodoo in four years than the Rockies whole existence lol
CFBCoachGuy@reddit
Look at the 1990s Braves. Winningest team in baseball, one World Series. Epic World Series collapse in 1991. Multiple blown postseason leads.
Then there’s the other teams.
Flacons: never had a winning overall record as a franchise. 24 playoff games in history since 1966. One of two Super Bowl appearances denoted by a blown 28-3 lead (the other a respectable 15 point loss to Denver which was bookended by losing seasons).
Hawks: since the NBA started conference semifinals in 70/71, it took until their 30th postseason trip to win the conference semifinal. The Hawks have won 168 playoff games- 11th most of all time, yet have the 9th worst playoff win percentage (0.431- it’s down to 0.398 if you exclude the hood years as the St. Louis Hawks).
Hockey: Atlanta is the only city to lose two NHL franchises. The Atlanta Flames went to the postseason six times in eight seasons. Never won a playoff series. The Thrashers were at least reliably miserable.
Being a bad team sucks, but it’s safe. It’s predictable. You know they’re bad. Everyone knows they’re bad. But there’s no hope. You don’t have to worry. There’s no need to rationalize that this is the year things will be different because there’s a new player or a new coach, only for it to be inexplicably crushed once again.
That’s what makes Georgia team’s different. There’s still hope. And almost every single time that hopes gets crushed in new and exciting ways.
abernathym@reddit
The Braves ratio of post season appearances vs actual World Series wins is heartbreaking. Like you said, it would be easier if they actually were terrible.

never won a Super Bowl, haven't even *been* to a Super Bowl in nearly fifty years; 0–6 in NFC Championship games since their last Super Bowl (which was a loss to the Raiders in Super Bowl XI after the '76 season).
If you want a baseball analogy, the Vikings are like the pre-2004 Boston Red Sox. Until the last two seasons, the Lions were like the pre-2016 Chicago Cubs.
SirGlass@reddit
I think what makes it so frustrating is the vikings are sometimes a good team
Like its sort of different when your team just sucks year after year, by the time you are 2-8 you really expect nothing
When you are 14-2 you are getting your hopes up and thinking "We have a chance" only to have them hit the playoffs and choke like every single fucking year
Tim-oBedlam@reddit
Right. We've had a few bad seasons but never anything truly awful, and we've never had an extended period of suckitude like the Lions for most of their existence or the Bucs in the 80s and 90s, but we're always falling apart in the playoffs.
Electrical_Quiet43@reddit
Yeah, if cursed means "have broken their fans' hearts the most" and not "have been the worse team," then it's clearly the Vikings. Many, many very good teams and equally many creative ways to crush fans' hopes and dreams.
Sageburner712@reddit
I don't know what supernatural entity the state of Minnesota angered but goddamn their sports teams can't catch a break. Any of them, take your pick.

Men's pro sports are dry since the Twins won the World Series in '91.
Vikings, Wild and Timberwolves have never won a championship.
af_cheddarhead@reddit
Over ruled on a technicality, the leagues merged after SB IV (4) in 1970 so the NFL Champion Vikings lost to the AFL Champion Kansas City Chiefs. So yes, the Viking won an NFL Championship.
WabbitFire@reddit
Pre merger Superbowls supercede NFL Championships just as pre Superbowl NFL Championships supercede NFL Championships. They won nothing.
af_cheddarhead@reddit
Really, sounds like revisionist history.
The first four Super Bowls were advertised as NFL Champion v. AFL Champion
WabbitFire@reddit
The merger was a done deal in 1966, those championships were secondary to the Superbowl, especially when the NFL Champion lost in SB III and IV.

Rhomya@reddit
The capacity of Target Center is like, 19k. They average 17k in attendance. The Lynx average like, 9k.
I guess if you want to count corporations buying extra seats that could be “sold out”, but they’re not at full capacity.
NazRiedFan@reddit
With that logic I could say we aren’t a hockey state because that’s the size of xcel energy center
Rhomya@reddit
The Xcel energy center that literally exceeds its seating capacity every game?
The Wild are literally in the top of the league for their attendance rates at around 103% capacity.
Lol, your logic is off.
NazRiedFan@reddit
You are missing the point I was making. The Wild averaged 18,500 fans per game last year so if you really care about 900 fans per game go ahead. My point wasn’t that Minnesota isn’t a hockey state it was that basketball is popular here when there is an actual team on the floor.
Rhomya@reddit
Dude, the issue isn't that there aren't enough hockey fans, its that the rink wasn't built big enough.
No one gives a shit about the Timberwolves in MN unless its the playoffs, and even then it barely gets any attention compared to the Vikings, Twins and Wild.

It varies wildly by demographic. With younger fans the Timberwolves are more popular than the Wild are

The Mariners
Ozzimo@reddit
Anyone with a history of Baseball or of Seattle knows this is the correct answer. We can win 116 games in one season, but never make the World Series.
hemppy420@reddit
It's what happens when you build a pitchers park and then dump off your, arguably, best pitcher in franchise history and don't replace him with decent pitchers.
No need to argue whether it was the right move. It was at the time. Randy was done in Seattle so he pitched his way out of there.
concrete_isnt_cement@reddit
Starting pitching was definitely not a problem on the '01 team. Freddy Garcia and Jamie Moyer aren't hall of famers, but they both had career years that year.
Realistic-Regret-171@reddit
Didn’t the Mariners win like a million games one season and then lose in the first round?
jevole@reddit
Their best season was 2001, won 116 and actually cleared the ALDS but then got their shit pushed in by the Yankees in the CS.
Entire-Joke4162@reddit
Happy to see this this high.
The worst part about the Mariners only making the playoffs 5 times in like 40 years is we don’t even get credit whenever this question comes up.
I told my Dad recently they’ve basically become my Red Sox where I’ll continue to root for them but we’ll just never win anything relevant and I’ve come to peace with that.
We still celebrate Griffey stealing home in 95 to win a Wildcard one-game playoff to get in to the playoffs.
I’m almost 38 and grew up on the 90’s Mariners - Unit, Griff, ARod… at their peak they won 90 games (1997).
Sure, we had some good years post breaking up the band, but it didn’t turn into anything.
We traded Randy (“too old”) and he immediately won 4 Cy Youngs and a World Series.
ARod became one of the greatest players ever and won a World Series.
Griff had an underrated career post-Mariners on the Reds.
I fucking hate this team. But I’ll always be there, watching the replays the next morning.

As a Pirates fan that lives in Seattle, I always laugh when my friends that are Mariner’s fans complain. At least you guys have ownership that is willing to spend money, you don’t do it well, but ya do it. We lucked (were terrible enough) into one of the best young pitchers in 20 years, and the big move this offseason to support him was to acquire a career Triple A 1B in Spencer Horowitz, oh! and we gave Cutch and his broken knees another $5M. I watch the Mariners as an escape from my Pirates fandom.
Entire-Joke4162@reddit
Ya, this is a great point. At least I can say they’re not trying to rip off revenue sharing and stay bad.
I mean, we didn’t let Julio walk.
Just via personal experience, it’s just so shitty to see spending money - we’re 7th in payroll! - and then a bunch of flameouts.
(Touching old wounds here with Beltre, Sexson, Cano, etc.)
It would be more understandable if it were the Pirates or the A’s and they’re like “yes, we are bad owners, we suck.”
I think my Red Sox comment was that I’ve just stopped getting my hopes up.
It’s been “our year” like every other year since 1992.
Obviously there’s some calculus here as modern baseball is just different as well never be the Dodgers or the Yankees… but man, we just can’t get over the hump.
Ever.
llamakoolaid@reddit
Man, I’ll tell ya I hoped they’d do well this season and then JRod did whatever the hell he did, now it’s just up to them to hold onto them young pitchers. I’ll keep rooting for the Mariners to turn it around
KobeBufkinBestKobe@reddit
You have to constantly get close but never quite get over the top to get the 'curse' label, otherwise youre just seen as mediocre. As an Atlanta Hawks fan i know this too well lol.
Also i believe you are misremembering the one game playoff in 1995, y'all won 9-1 and Griffey never stole home. You've probably got it mixed up with Griffey scoring on Edgar Martinez's double to win game 5 against the Yankees that same year and advance to ultimately lose to Cleveland.

The Browns’ curse is easily identifiable. His name is Jimmy Haslam. The man is a cancer to football teams. I say this as a Tennessee Vols fan. He was the predominant booster for UT in the 2000’s/2010’s and had his foot on the scale for all the major AD/coaching decisions. The man is allergic to wise football decisions. His Deshaun Watson contract will forever be the worst move in NFL history.
Legally_a_Tool@reddit
To be fair, the old Browns were actually not half bad in terms of their record. The new Browns are the laughingstock of the NFL and perhaps professional sports more broadly.

The Cleveland Browns were absolutely NOT moribund that they up and left for another city. This is just false. They have 8 league championships, including 4 NFL championships, 11 conference championships and 12 division titles. 5 playoff appearances in the 80s and another one in the 90s before the team left in 1995. Art Model didn't move the team because it sucked or was cursed, he moved it because he thought he could make more money in the Baltimore market.
The team is certainly "moribund" now...but it wasn't before the move.
Xan_derous@reddit
I have literally never seen the Browns do anything in my entire life and I'm in my 30s.

Atlas7-k@reddit
The Ravens are the expansion franchise.
phred_666@reddit
No. Cleveland’s owner pulled up the team and moved it to Baltimore. Cleveland didn’t have a franchise for a few years until the NFL stepped in and awarded them an expansion team. So technically, the old Browns are the Ravens and the new Browns are an expansion team.
Derplord4000@reddit
Nope, the Browns technically did move to Baltimore but suspended operations, meanwhile the Ravens were an expansion team that just happened to hire all of the Browns staff and players. Eventually, the Browns simply moved back to Cleveland and continued operations as the same Browns as before.
SonofBronet@reddit
No, the Ravens are also an expansion team. It was part of the deal ownership had to make with the City of Cleveland and the NFL to get them to allow the move. Legally, the Ravens were a completely new franchise that just happened to consist entirely of players and staff that were on the browns the season prior.
Semi-Pros-and-Cons@reddit
Isn't there some official version of the history where the Browns suspended their franchise, and Baltimore was added as an expansion team, which just so happened to pick up all of Cleveland's players and staff? Like, all of the franchise records for the Ravens only go back to when the team started, and there's no other official continuity between the two teams? Or is that some bogus story I made-up and confused with reality?
Either way, I don't think it would do much to assuage the perpetual grief of Browns fans to say that, technically, the Ravens weren't the same team.
Derplord4000@reddit
Nope, you got it. Legally and technically speaking, the current Browns are the same Browns that were founded and coached by Paul Brown while the Ravens were just an expansion team. People just like the drama of "Haha, your team moved and then won 2 superbowls while your new team is ass!"
JunkMilesDavis@reddit

DeShawn was supposed to be our Big Ben, sadly, we were only half right. But yeah that trade is an albatross around the Browns necks for 2-3 more years.
As for Baker, that’s some serious revisionism. What with him alienating the locker room and insisting on playing with a bad shoulder. Hell he had teammate’s family putting out videos about how bad he was with the Browns. Then there is the stealing of the Progressive endorsement deal. Then getting cut by 2 more teams before starting to look good in the worst division in the NFL.

Just when it was looking like they might have finally put it together they drop the QB who got them their first playoff win in decades to get an "adult." Then they trade heaven and earth for and hand, at the time, the NFL's biggest contract to a serial rapist who hadn't played in a year. That's been disastrous due to injuries and him being shit when he has actually played.
Mr-Mothy@reddit
Life long Browns fan here. Can confirm. It's a factory of sadness year after year. I can't even get the preseason hype anymore (This is the year we turn it around). It's pretty damn depressing to the point at just laugh at myself for being a fan.
THere's an old joke that goes, "When I die, I want 6 Browns players as my paulbearers. Just so they can let me down one last time."
BroughtBagLunchSmart@reddit
They were a joke/punching bag for so long that everyone was rooting for them out of pity. They got a competent QB, were mediocre for a few years, and then the owners canned him and hired a serial rapist. They had tons of organic goodwill from being a joke for so long and some dipshit billionaire asked his dipshit billionaire wife if she was OK with giving a rapist the worst contract in the history of professional sports and she was fine with it. Now everyone rightfully hates them again.
brian11e3@reddit
I know nothing of sports, but my brain immediately thought of the Browns.
NateLPonYT@reddit
This is absolutely true! All you have to do is see that jersey with all the quarterback names
TheBimpo@reddit
For the uninitiated, this is an example of the jersey.
The Quarterback is the most important player on an American football team. They're the de facto leader of the team and a long-reigning QB basically becomes a mascot for the entire city/metro area. They're inextricably tied to the community and the stability of their longevity in the position is typically associated with long-term success of the team. If a team has the same QB for 10-12 years or more, things are generally good.
The Browns, since their reintroduction to the league in the late 90s, have not been able to establish a "franchise" quarterback. They often have 2-3 different guys playing each season. Either through incompetence, injury, a failed experiment with a prospect, or any other way they can find to fail....they can never get this right.

velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Not a team, but the most cursed fandom in sports at the moment is Minnesota. None of the big 4 (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) from Minnesota have even made it to a title game in 34 years now.
94plus3@reddit
At least the Cubs were famous for their curse while even baseball fans forget the White Sox even exist
pinniped90@reddit
NFL - Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. Both had teams laden with Hall of Famers go to 4 Super Bowls and lose all 4.
MLB - Cleveland Guardians. Current drought stretches to the 1940s, the new King of the Curse after the Cubs ended their own curse in Cleveland in a Game 7. Adding to the cursedness is that the Guards are usually pretty good - often in the playoffs.
NBA - of the big clubs, probably the Knicks. And that fact is delicious to every other NBA fanbase.
NHL - Maybe the Leafs? Big money club that hasn't won in over half a century. I don't follow NHL that closely.
Ketchup_is_my_jam@reddit
At least Cleveland has BEEN to the World Series (see Seattle Mariners).
perpetualmotionmachi@reddit
For the NHL, I'd say the NY Rangers. For decades they were one of only 6 teams, and they've still only won four Stanley cups. The last one was 30 years ago, and the one before that was over 80 years ago.
But yes, the Maple Leafs suck too
Dai-The-Flu-@reddit
It can’t be the rangers when the Maple Leags have gone nearly 60 years without a title. The Canucks, Sabres have things pretty bad too.
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
The Flyers have won 2 championships, with the last in 1975. I think what's even worse is they're perennially good but always manage to blow it. They have one of the overall best winning % in the NHL. They've made the playoffs 40 times and lost the last 6 times they've been in the finals.
Ol_Man_J@reddit
The winning % in the early seasons is propping up the 2012-2013 till now seasons. They are at 45% since the lockout. Almost a 5th of the teams existence has had a losing record, 89-94 were uh not great either, they were just THAT good for years.

All I know is that 2014-15 were insanely fun, so I choose the parade, even at the expense of a bunch of 100 loss summers.
amazingtaters@reddit

Haha yeah my dad is a die hard Jets fan can’t disappoint him.
Nobody in my family really cares about baseball so I just picked the Pirates since I could easily go to games for them.

How is this even a debate? I’m a 60 year-old Cleveland Browns fan. The last year they won an NFL Championship was the year I was born. Our failures have names: “Red Right 88, The Drive, The Fumble.” Say any of those names to a Browns fan over 40 and you will see them fall into a fetal position sobbing. We even have a curse named after us: “The 22 Curse.” We took three QBs with the 22nd pick in the first round of the draft: Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden, and Johnny Manziel. The nickname for our stadium is “The Factory of Sadness.” There’s so much more, but writing this is triggering my football PTSD.

I'm convinced the Brewers are cursed. They were on the verge of defeating the NY Mets and in the top of the 9th inning my boy Pete "Polar Bear" Alonso hit the go ahead game winning home runs. Then a few batters later, Jesse Winker, a guy the brewers hated this year, so much so that a Adam's challenged him to a parking lot fight, scored the last run of the series!

The Lions were very cursed. It wasnt just the losing. It was how they lost. The curse of Bobby Layne is real.
Losing on obscure rules that people didn't fully grasp (see: 10 second runoff against Atlanta).
Rules that literally wind up being named after their players (the Calvin Johnson "catch" rule.)
Phantom hands to the face calls leading to a Hail Mary by the Packers.
Illegal batting by the Seahawks called incorrectly.
I could go on....and on.........and on.
Every team feels like they get screwed, but nobody compares to the Lions.

I honestly can't believe this post isn't #1. Maybe it's because the lions have had some success recently so shitting on the browns might feel more natural. From where I sit as a 39 year old who was a lions fan as a kid, what was true in 1995 is still true in 2025: since the Ford family bought the team, the highest the team has reached is a loss in the conference finals and every single head coach they've hired has never gotten another NFL head coaching job. That's how painfully bad this franchise has been.
Northman86@reddit
No, there is a huge difference between being cursed, and just sucking at football.
Chinchillachimcheroo@reddit
Yeah, the Lions have never felt cursed to me, just terrible (until recently, obviously). The Bills and Vikings are cursed. The Browns are both
Northman86@reddit
No, Lions just suck, to be curse they would have needed a chance to win the Superbowl but be denied by absolutely strange circumstance. Being consistantly 4th in the NFC North, is just them sucking.
BeefInGR@reddit
It's worth noting that from 2015-2022 (seasons that began in those years), no Detroit team besides the Lions made their respective playoffs and despite the Lions going twice and missing once by a game, Detroit teams had the worst win percentage of any of the 12 "Big 4" cities and was bottom five in the nation.
Since the end of the Green Bay SNF game to finish the 22-23 season, Detroit teams...
Lions have won consecutive divisional championships and will be the 1 seed for the first time in organization history
Tigers made the playoffs via Wildcard in perhaps one of the greatest mid-season turnarounds in baseball history
Red Wings missed qualification for the Stanley Cup Playoffs on the final day and are looking good enough to make a push
Pistons are currently in the middle of the playoff race, and should qualify. A year after being so bad there were calls to sell the team

The Goff era has been the most successful era of Detroit Lions football since the NFL Championship era Lions. Obviously, a Super Bowl appearance would cement it, but if it all goes wrong tomorrow and we're doomed to 8-9 for eternity, nobody with color television has seen a more talented or more successful Detroit Lions side.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Well, thats simply not true.
I get that I'm old, but the last time we played Washington in the playoffs was the NFC Championship game in the '91 season. We haven't done any more than that Sander's era team.
BeefInGR@reddit
I love the 91 team, but without Barry they were average. Hell, with Barry we were average.
Success from a standpoint of banners and trophies. Until last year, the joke was Tampa Bay had won the NFC North more recently than Detroit.

I was born late into the Mariucci years, I don't remember '08 as well as most, but I remember being bullied for being a Lions fan. No one wanted to be a Lions at that time, especially after '08. The Patricia years were pretty rough, and too outsider's it's hard to describe it. Being a Lions fan through those years as well was rough. We weren't just some joke, we were the first joke people learned. More common than; knock knock "Who's there?" Apple. . .
It still doesn't feel really. Like Cinderella's carriage once the clock strikes twelve, we'll be a pumpkin again.
NVJAC@reddit
Oh god, I'm a fair bit older. I started watching the Lions all the way back in the Monte Clark era.
But the best one was the guy after him, Darryl Rogers, after a bad run of games openly asking the media "What does a guy have to do to get fired around here?"
Chester_A_Arthuritis@reddit
I don’t know. The Browns went 1-15 and then went 0-16 the next year.
odabeejones@reddit

cruzweb@reddit
It wasn't any better in the 90s. Watching this team run the best running back in history out of the game with their poor performance and management with that headcase Scott Mitchell at the helm was absolutely gut-wrenching.
The 2008 lions also went 4-0 in the preseason. So yes, they still could have gone lower than what they did. And seasons are longer now so a team could still have a worse regular season record.
veryangryowl58@reddit
I remember that one about the Lion cub who was being abused going around a lot in those years ("you should go live with the Detroit Lions, they don't beat anyone!")
The one bright side is we never have any false confidence going into games, so there's that. The end of the Thanksgiving game was weird this year, but almost more weird because the Bears lost in SOL fashion.

TK1129@reddit
Maybe based on region. If you’re from NY/NJ or New England you knew the curse of the bambino. I’m from New York and a die hard Yankee fan. We all grew up with stories from our dads and grandpas about how the Red Sox were cursed after trading Babe Ruth to us. Our belief in the Yankees superiority and the Sox being cursed was to the point where 2004 was unfathomable. Just a collective nightmare we all had. I don’t remember when I heard of the Billy Goat but it had to be years later. I assume it’s the opposite way if you’re from Chicago or the Midwest

Advanced-Retro@reddit
A bit obscure, but in terms of the most cursed teams ever, and not just for their win/loss record, was the 1920 Jonesboro Roosters.
They've all but been erased from most sports pages and very little is known of this baseball team. But they endured 2 seasons of absolute mayhem before finally ending.
In 1920, 2 days after their first game their general manager was killed by a horse that kicked him in the head during a meet and greet at the baseball field where they played.
14 days after that, their new addition, a pitcher named Seymour was on a train, on his way to the team after being traded by a minor league team from Chicago. As he left the train, drunk, he was nearly passed out and was practically thrown off the train by staff just as the train was pulling away. He got caught between the train and the platform and was killed instantly.
By their 5th game, the bad luck really started piling on. A bees nest was hidden by some planks in the corner of the dugout, and when someone moved them, an onslaught of bees attacked anyone within 50 feet.
Since it was bonnet day, and all the ladies in attendance wore flower-clad bonnets, the bees that didn't attack soon flew aggressively at women wearing bonnets.
6 people who were allergic to bees, died.
Going winless in their first 30 games, the head coach was fired and in retaliation shot at the owner claiming he had never paid. The coach was a bad shot and the shots missed, and instead went through a wall striking the owner's secretary who was sitting at a desk in the next room.
The secretary survived.
Later that season, the train they were riding on derailed and 6 players were killed.
By the end of the season the team won 3 games, and had a total of 14 deaths associated with it.
Back then, players held regular jobs and 4 worked at the nearby Auburn/Cord factory in Auburn, Indiana. During a speed test of one of the new cars, 3 of the 4 players were watching the car race down a narrow road where it lost control and crashed into them, killing them instantly.
During the winter of 1921, a fire swept through the clubhouse destroying the teams equipment and uniforms.
In spring 1921, 4 of the players were arrested for moving moonshine to speak-easys in Chicago. They were sentenced to 5 years in prison, and 2 died that year of turburculosis, including the nephew of the owner.
By summer, the team had it's own bus, and drove to nearby games. In July 2021 the bus suffered a mechanical failure on its front suspension and plunged off a steep embankment injuring 7 and killing 2.
In August, September 1921, they were again winless, and the owner engaged in gambling to keep enough money flowing to sustain the company's bills.
Owing money to loan sharks and Mafia, the teams offices were shot up, killing 7 players and office employees.
The owner, facing bankruptcy fled and was never seen again.
In the end, all assets of the owner, including his house, the partially completed ball field, and any other assets the team had were auctioned off in a tax sale.
Their overall record, 6 and 42 over 1 1/2 seasons.
This team had the highest death toll and ranked as one of the most cursed teams in any sport in history.

SlinkiusMaximus@reddit
The Bears haven't been good in a while, but they've at least been to an SB in the past 20 years, which is more than some teams can say.
The Bulls had MJ in the 90s and have had some decent teams since then.
The Cubs finally broke their curse and had one of the greatest WS of all time.
The Sox won the WS 2005, which is better than many teams.
The Blackhawks had a good run and won the Stanley Cup 10 years ago.
Sure, right now none of those teams are contenders, but I think there are cities out there who have more cursed major sports teams, as much as I sympathize as a Chicago Land native.
No-Conversation1940@reddit
It's more that there is zero hope in the near future for the Chicago sports teams because every owner involved is cheap, a malicious meddler, or both (Reinsdorf).
SlinkiusMaximus@reddit
You could say that about a ton of cities’ sports teams though
No-Conversation1940@reddit
Every single one of the Chicago sports owners holds their team back in some way. This is across five major sports teams, six if you are charitable enough to add soccer. There are none you can point to and say they'll be a playoff contender now or in the foreseeable future.
imperfectcastle@reddit
And the White Sox were supposed to be the team of the future. They made the playoffs in 2021. Just 4 years removed and the only hope we have is beating our own terrible recors
No-Conversation1940@reddit
I'm a Cubs fan and the real curse was cheap/malicious ownership. It's impossible to overcome that in American sports. We see it with most Chicago sports teams now.
Chicago is too good of a sports town, our fans are too loyal. The Jerry Reinsdorfs of the world need to feel severe financial pain to sell the team.
beertruck77@reddit
You're probably the most wrong person in this thread. They've had, what, 11 championships in the last ~30 years, and the 85 Bears are probably the greatest NFL team of all time.

benck202@reddit
This is a very hot take. Chicago teams might be in a drought, but now that cubs curse is broken, you can’t possibly call any of these teams cursed. The cubs and white Sox have each won a World Series in the 21st century. The bulls were THE team in the 90s and have made the playoffs numerous times since then. The Blackhawk’s have won the Stanley cup 3 times in the last 15 years.

The Cleveland Browns in football. Tbh I can't think of a comparable example in other sports lol. I mean the Lions have always been shit more or less that's true, but like in baseball I can't think of a team who's never enjoyed at least some years of success. The Philadelphia Phillies have the most losses of any sports franchise in North America, but they also have multiple World Series titles and have their good years. Their dubious record is mostly due to the fact they're really old. In the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1967 (the year the NHL doubled the amount of teams in the league.). The Chicago Cubs had a 107 year World Series drought.

The Portland TrailBlazers NBA team has had some infamous luck with injuries. Very early (too early? maybe it sold its soul) on in its existence, it won a championship with a superb, transformational center who was one of the best ever to play the game, Bill Walton. He subsequently became injured the next season, and since then, every time the team found a man who seemed to be able to fill that "man in the middle" role, he would break down. Sam Bowie was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan, but he had a habit of breaking a leg. Arvydas Sabonis was the equal of Walton at one point, but he was only allow to play for the team after his body had been wrecked by overuse by the Soviet Union. Greg Oden was the No. 1 pick, but injuries kept his career to 82 games over three seasons. While still in the league today, and never quite as promising as the others, people often forget how very good Jusef Nurkic was, since he always seemed to be injured for the playoffs, and his peak ended with a horrific broken leg.
And just to add to the center woes, a shooting guard of exceptional ability and promise, Brandon Roy, was found to have very bad knees.
So while the team has had durable, star players like Drexler, Rashid Wallace, Aldridge, and Lillard, their contributions merely made their teams very good, and never rising to greatness. Drexler and Lillard, moreover, had the misfortune of being the second-best in the league at their position, behind the all-time greats.

In between the team ages and quantity, the MLB is where you historically see the longest droughts in American pro sports:
Even though the Red Sox are one of the winningest teams in the entire league, there was an 86-year drought between 1918 and 2004. The longest example I can think of are the Chicago Cubs, who suffered an 108-year drought between 1908 and 2016.

Depends on your definition of curse. Is it more cursed to be 0-4 in Super Bowls like the Bills or Vikings or to be consistently bad for a LONG period of time like the Lions, Bears, and Browns are/have been? Is being cursed neither of those and instead being stuck at painfully average like the Saints?
I think all of those can be viewed as cursed in some ways.

Minnesota men's teams. 124+ consecutive seasons without a championship appearance, which is 21 years longer than the next metro that has teams in all four Big 4 sports. It's a 10 year longer championship win drought than the next closest "Big 4" metro (Phoenix).
Vikings: 4 SB losses, 48 year SB appearance drought, lost last 6 NFCCG games they appeared in, multiple missed kicks causing playoff losses, 41-doughnut, multiple tragic deaths of players, first 14-3 Wildcard team, first 14-3 wildcard team to lose a game, stadium roof collapse due to snowstorm, top 6 winning % in SB era, but only team in top 10 w/o multiple SB wins, much less any SB win
Twins: 18 straight playoff losses between 2002-2022 which is a North American pro sports record, last AL pennant 34 years ago, negligent ownership, very little true success outside of 1965, 1987, & 1991
Timberwolves: worst winning % in NA sports until last year, 14 year playoff drought ('04-'18), Joe Smith tampering penalties, Malik Sealy tragic death, steady threat of relocation, 4 playoff series wins in 35 years, no Finals appearances
North Stars: No Stanley Cup, constant financial issues, bad ownership, tragic on-ice death, relocation in large part due to cola wars (really, look it up)
Wild: only 4 playoff series wins, 10 years since last series win, punitive cap hell never enforced as strictly as it's been enforced, going on 50 combined seasons w/o a Stanley Cup
Everyone brings up the Lions and Bills as the most cursed NFL franchises, but I think they get more sympathy because they play in rustbelt cities that are down on their luck. The Twin Cities aren't down-on-their-luck cities. The Lions haven't had cursed losses because they haven't been good enough to have meaningful losses. I'd argue the Vikings are the most cursed, having decades of getting close, only to have their seasons end in comically bad ways.

Yeah I’m thinking more along the lines of a much longer drought. 20 years isn’t great but it’s no Maple Leafs type of drought.
ziggyjoe2@reddit
They've been bad their entire existence. And I couldn't think of another team as bad in recent memory except the Islanders.
I suppose Toronto has been suffering since 1967. Montreal has been terrible since mid 90s but they have a finals appearance.
Vancouver has been cursed too but they've been pretty solid during the regular season.
tuesnightshenanigans@reddit
May I present to you this years Nashville Predators? Franchise since 1998 and terrible this year.

It’s funny you mention the Cardinals. You’re totally right, because they’re such an old franchise that’s never won anything. Historic ineptitude.
But at the same time, I don’t feel like they get the coverage that other cursed franchises get. Lions, Bills, Vikings…they get brought up pretty frequently about how they can’t win it all.
The Cards it seems like the national media and lots of fans don’t even care enough about them to mention them.

BallIsLife2016@reddit
Mostly just the Browns. The Cavs have a championship in the last decade and over the last 30 years have spent a lot more time being good than bad. The Daugherty/Price Cavs of the 90s were awesome but just happened to go against some guy who played for the Bulls. Then there was LeBron era 1 and LeBron era 2. Cavs then did a really competent (and reasonably fast) rebuild and currently have the best record in the league while being on track to win 70 games. When the Cavs have been bad, they been bad. But that’s actually sort of what you want in basketball in order to get better picks and it has led to reasonably quick rebuilds (roughly four years of sucking) before going back to being a very good. Obviously when LeBron was with the team much of the credit for the team’s success goes to him. But recently the Cavs have been a really smart and well-run franchise that was built on good drafting and smart trades. I don’t follow the Guards and others have spoken to them but my sense is they’re usually fairly competitive despite the lengthy championship drought.

The Jets procured a future HOF QB who proceeded to get a season-ending injury on his very first drive. If that ain't cursed, I don't know what is.
tatofarms@reddit
As a fan, I've started to feel like it all goes back to Joe Namath's guarantee that the team would beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. They did win that game, and it's still considered one of the biggest upsets in NFL history (well before I was born), but they've since had only 13 seasons with a W-L record over .500 since 1970, and they currently have the longest streak of not making the playoffs in U.S. professional sports. And then there's the weird indignities like the buttfumble, Aaron Rodgers' torn Achilles that you mentioned, Bill Belichick resigning on a cocktail napkin the day after he had been announced as the Jets new head coach, only to go to a division rival and go on a historic two decade run with Tom Brady. The list just goes on.

It’s really just the Browns. The Guardians are well run but limited by being in a small market. Consistently competitive with multiple WS appearances. 90s Indians were nasty, were up 3-1 on RedSox in the 00s, lost in 7 to the Cubs in the 10s. TexasPrarieChicken@reddit
I think I draw a distinction between bad and cursed.
Bad is you loose (or don’t win) because poor coaching, poor players and or players with subpar skills.
Cursed is you have great coaching, excellent players with awesome skills and you still loose because weird circumstances, or bizarre things happening.
And something else you can point to as the reason.
I’m from the Northeast. Here we speak of “The Curse of the Bambino”. When Babe Ruth was playing for the Red Sox he was more than happy spending time not playing with being a pig farmer the Sharon, MA. But the owner of the team lost money on a Broadway show called No, No Nannette, and to make up the loss he sold Ruth’s contract to the Yankees. Ruth went to NY and became a drunken womanizer. The Red Six didn’t win another World Series until 2004.
Another team you could site would be the Chicago Cubs. Story goes they wouldn’t let a guy in with his goat. So he cursed them.
I think the Cleveland Indians fired a coach who afterwards went out on the field, stood at second base and cursed team.

A franchise so cursed there's actually a term "Chargering" for when they inevitably gack away a game. A franchise that has one championship, and it's from before the AFL-NFL merger; they've been to 1 Super Bowl in the entire history of the Super Bowl. A team that went 14-2 with the MVP of the 2006 season and the returning DROY, only to be one-and-done in the playoffs.

Ranging from winning 116 games and not advancing past the divisional, being 25 games above .500 in late June and missing the playoffs, oh and also in a separate year having a 10 game lead in the division in July and missing the playoffs. There have also been a number of years where they missed the playoffs by a game. Also several years they won 95 games and just missed playoffs cause everyone else in their league just were disgusting.

CougarWriter74@reddit
Minnesota Vikings. They have had great talented players throughout their history yet have still never won a SB and haven't even played in one since the late 1970s. They came sooooo close in 1998 (Moss' rookie season) but Gary Anderson missed the FG in the NFCC to put the Vikings ahead and possibly put the game out of reach from the Falcons. He'd made what, 40 kicks in a row up to that point but missed when it mattered the most.
That 98 Vikings team was the stuff of legends and probably a Top 5 all time best time to never win a championship. I was living in Minnesota at the time attending college and so many people were just feeling that was going to be their year, they were finally going to do it. Nope. The evening of that game was my last shift working at Hy-Vee before I started my internship. People were shuffling through my line in shock, looking like zombies and just couldn't believe the Vikings had lost. The very next year, a nearly identical team, the 1999 St. Louis Rams came out of nowhere, put up crazy numbers and won the SB, while beating the Vikings in the NFC divisional round along the way.

In order of cursedness
Minnesota Vikings: Consistently good, has reached the NFC conference championship in every decade of the superbowl era, made it to the super 4 times in 8 years and failed to win a superbowl. Despite having the 3rd highest win-loss ratio in the Superbowl era(regular season) no superbowl wins) based on the win percentage you would expect 5 superbowl wins.
Buffalo Bills: Losing 4 Superbowls in 4 years, but prolonged periods of suckage, bumps them down.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Yes they are based in Canada, but lets be honest at this point the NHL is a American League. Consistent appearances in the Playoffs, but not Stanley Cups since the 1960s.
San Jose Sharks: After 33 years of existence with 21 Playoff Appearances and no Stanley Cup Appearances, and entering a five playoff drought the Sharks have entered a cursed existence.
Minnesota Twins: 20 years without a playoff win despite wasting the career of First ballot HOF catcher Joe Mauer, and routinely trading away blooming superstars(Torey Hunter, Luiz Arraez and Johan Santana). The Twins have been cursed by their management.
Utah Jazz: If being cursed for perversed location for Basketball was a curse they would be highest on the list, a NBA franchise in Salt Lake city is most certainly a reason for a curse when more deserving cities in America have no NBA franchise. Wasting Karl Malone's career is reason enough for a curse on its own.
Chicago White Sox: The Southside team of Chicago exists in prolong misery broken up with flares of brilliances, and a 2007 World Series, but return to average is a cruel bitch.
Cleaveland Browns Jr.: The original Cleaveland Browns(Baltimore Ravens) have definitively proved that the curse was Cleaveland, since moving from Cleaveland the Ravens have won two Superbowls, and did so in the first 20 years away from Cleaveland. The fact that the original team has had all the past glories for Cleaveland and the abysmal play at the factory of Saddness push them way down this list.
Detroit Lions, up to 1999, the Lions are cursed. Since 2000 they simply sucked, failing to reach the superbowl once in 58 years of the Superbowl era when the NFC North has combined for 11 Superbowl Appearances and 5 wins, thats an appearance every five years on average, and they have never made it themselves. However long periods of complete suckage, wasting Barry Sander carreer to the point he ended it early when Walter Payton, and Emmit Smiths eventual career rushing records were within easy reach, and multiple 0-16 season put them low on this list. A failure to reach the superbowl in 2024 Postseason would bump them up however.
Los Angeles Angels: this is a team that has had multiple generational players on the team, and wasted every ounce of their potential. Nolan Ryan, Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and Rod Carew. Admittedly baseball is by far the hardest sport to reach the post season, but they managed something in 2002 denying Barry Bonds his best chance for a world Series win, proving hubris overcomes curses.

Since 2010, the 49ers had 13 playoff wins (only the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs have won more at 16 each). None of those wins resulted in the 49ers winning the Super Bowl.
Meanwhile, every other team who has won 6 or more playoff games since 2010 has won at least 1 Super Bowl in that time frame. This shows that the 49ers are basically the luxury brand version of the Dallas Cowboys.

But having to see Tim Couch get slaughtered sucked. Drafting Brandon Weeden (I was there, the day he gift-wrapped a win to Kirk Cousins on his first start) and Johnny Manziel two years apart, both of them first-round selections. Peyton Hillis being the perfect embodiment of the Madden Curse, by rising out of and immediately falling back into obscurity.
And the folks who left? Belichick. Saban. Hell, Baker Mayfield! Ugh.
And now, Deshaun fucking Watson. The worst contract in sports, possibly ever. After years of watching my fellow Browns fans comment on Ben Roethlisberger, only for them to initially embrace Watson? Buffalo has also lost 4 super bowls. They’ve been having great seasons lately but the Chiefs have their number.

New York Jets
nylondragon64@reddit
The jets couldn't win a playoff game if you gave it to them.
the-bryman@reddit
There are many ways to answer this, but I’m going to throw the New York Mets into consideration.
They could have a $1 billion payroll, but they’ll never be anything more than the Yankees’ little brother.
They’re cursed by proximity.

My Washington Wizards.
DCStoolie@reddit
Im glad someone said this. The Wizards won a championship in the 70s and haven’t sniffed a conference finals since then. They haven’t won 50 games 78-79.
They had some good teams in the 2000s only to have their star player, Gilbert Arenas, brought a gun into the locker room over an owed gambling debt. He wasn’t planning on using the gun but the person he owed the debt to, Javaris Crittenton, who also brought a gun into the locker room, was very much close to pulling the trigger. It brought a whole black eye to the franchise and Arenas was trade a season or so later, while Crittenton is in prison for murder as of 2011.
Fortunes changed in 2011, as they got the first overall pick, and drafted John Wall, followed by Bradley Beal a few drafts later. These two were supposed to be the cornerstones of the future and won a few playoff series, until John got a super max, got hurt and then reinjured himself in the shower, effectively ending his playing career. Beal would prove that he’s not number one player on any sort of winning team.
The team would spend years trying to compete/retool because their owner would rather make the playoffs as the 8 seed than rebuild the team to actually compete. It doesn’t help that he also owns the Capitals who he lucked into a generational talent in Alex Ovechkin, who has allowed the Capitals to be a legitimate contender for years, winning the Stanley Cup in 2018.
The Wizards are now one of the worst teams in the league (by design tbh) and are probably the least respected organization in all of basketball.

The Cubs' curse was so strong that the price for breaking it was splintering the timeline, ultimately landing us in our current mess.
uresmane@reddit
Probably every Minnesota sports team, I think I saw on a list that it's gone the longest without any of it professional men's teams winning a championship of any city/state... Over 30 years, and we have all 4 sports teams
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit
I'm not sure how they're doing lately, but the Cubs certainly had a dry spell.
ScubaSteve7886@reddit
Growing up in Northeast Ohio, I can confirm that Cleveland was the most cursed sports city, though the Cavs winning in 2016 made things a bit better.

Cleveland, Ohio. The cavaliers won a championship in 2016 but the years from 1964 until then were championship free and even months after the cavaliers won, the baseball team blew a 3-1 lead and lost the World Series. I know nothing about the browns because football isn’t my thing but from what I’ve gathered from living here the past 33 years, they’ve yet to be decent since the team came back in like 1999.

There are 36 professional franchises that have never won a championship.
Professional, closed, monopolistic leagues are completely un-American businesses. The MLB is a legally protected monopoly, and all the other leagues try to argue for the same treatment.
We need open leagues with relegation and promotion.
SonofBronet@reddit
Hell no
MtHood_OR@reddit
Says the guy from Seattle… the shitty Seattle team and owner is why Portland doesn’t have a baseball team.
SonofBronet@reddit
Promotion and relegation is a pipe dream. Our sports leagues aren’t set up that way.
MtHood_OR@reddit
Oh I know. They are set up as non competitive monopolies. We in Oregon are considered part of the “Seattle Market” but fuck that.

The New York Giants. But I think that one is chalked up more to incompetence than it is a curse
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
The Giants aren't cursed....
You can't tell me the team that won two Super Bowls with Eli Manning, including beating an undefeated Tom Brady is cursed.
ucbiker@reddit
It’s always funny on the NCFE meme subreddit because People shit on Eagles fans for having only one Super Bowl while Eagles fans shit on Cowboys and Washington fans for having ancient Super Bowls. Then someone sneaks in and is like, the Giants are statistically the worst team in the NFL but have more Super Bowls in the 21st century than the Eagles.
OneAndDone169@reddit
I did follow it up with incompetence.
We’ll call it cursed with incompetence.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
They arent even the most incompetent team in their stadium.
SlinkiusMaximus@reddit
I don't think the Giants are even near the top of most incompetently run sports teams (although not saying they're competently run). Even in just NY there's the Jets.
TheBimpo@reddit
They are the opposite of cursed. A cursed franchise does not win two Super Bowls with Eli Manning.
SonofBronet@reddit
Buddy you can’t say the giants are the most cursed sports team when they literally share a stadium with the football equivalent of a bus full of orphans going off a cliff
TK1129@reddit
We’ve been pretty pathetic recently but 2 super bowls in the last 20 years isn’t too bad. My wife the Jets fan now that’s cursed

Arizona Cardinals lost to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII and haven't been back to the Super Bowl since; Phoenix Suns lost to the Bucks at the 2021 NBA Finals; and Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Texas Rangers at the 2023 World Series... but their last win was in 2001 when they defeated the Yankees. Some say that win cursed Arizona sports since.

Philadelphia teams. Eagles have won 1 championship despite being very close. Both losses were by one field goal and both mired with bad luck. Whenever a Philadelphia baseball team won the World Series there’s a global economic collapse. (2008, 1980, 1929) so there’s something there too
W0rk3rB@reddit

Case in point is the Browns.
SonofBronet@reddit
ITT: People who don’t know what “cursed” means.
But to answer your question, it’s the Buffalo Bills. They were literally trapped in a loop where they kept making it back to the Super Bowl, only to lose by an even bigger margin each time. It’s like the premise of a twilight zone episode.
A team sucking doesn’t mean they’re cursed. Sure, it’s not a great feeling. But there’s nothing worse than being inches away from winning it all only to have it ripped from you again, and again, and again, and AGAIN. You cannot know true despair without having had hope once.
Sarcastic_Rocket@reddit
The fact that nobody is mentioning the Arizona Cardinals just shows it's cursed because nobody even thinks it's cursed
They are a team that was founded in 1898, the oldest Football team in the NFL, they moved around but including their entire 127 year tenure, they have the 2nd least amount of playoff game wins. They have no Superbowl wins, and have only been to 1. The team with the least playoff wins is the Texans which was started playing in 2002 (The cards had been around for 104 years) and the team barely ahead of the Cards is the Jaguars which started playing in 1995 (the cards had been around for 97 years).
Imagine having a 97 year headstart on a team and you still have less playoff wins.

I'm convinced the Sixers win the title the year the Raptors did. That Kawhi shot that bounced the rim for an hour before going in was brutal.

Easily the Minnesota Vikings. There are few teams that consistently have successful regular seasons that choke in the playoffs, as much as the Vikings.
Proper-Effort4577@reddit
Detroit lions, Seattle mariners, any Philly team, New York Mets, Cleveland Browns, New York knicks
docmoonlight@reddit
I don’t really get saying “any Philly team”. Eagles won the Super Bowl in like 2015 and Phillies won the Series in 2008. Those are pretty short droughts for a league with 30 teams where you should really only be expecting to win every 30 years. Meanwhile, why is nobody mentioning the Cleveland Guardians, who haven’t won since the 40s?
Proper-Effort4577@reddit
I feel like Philly teams consistently lose in embarrassing fashions and choke jobs like losing 3 championships in one year with the Phillies eagles and union. Cities like Boston seem to always have everything go their way for their teams

The Cleveland Browns
Connect-Brick-3171@reddit
There were predictions that the Messiah would arrive when the Cubs won the World Series. They did. He didn't. The 1967 Red Sox were a Cinderella team after a long drought. The Milwaukee Bucks had a promotion in the early 1970's Lose for Lew. They did, drafted Lew Alcindor #1, and became competitive as long as he remained on the team. And those 1969 Mets. Cycling of team fortunes have been a sports expectation over an extended time, just as they are now.

Feels like the Pacers have been cursed this century. Put together a championship caliber team that gets blown up due Malice. Draft an All-Star who ends up snapping their leg in two, who post-recovery demands a trade and blows the team up again.
