The free place is probably the truck sleeper
lowballbertman@reddit
Had a buddy take a job with a hot shot outfit, driving 1 ton ram 5500. In the interview they told him theyād get him a hotel where necessary. I told him thatās a lie heāll be sleeping on the bench seat in the crew cab truck. Take a wild guess how many times they got him a hotel and how many times he was sleeping on the bench seat? Dude lasted one month too long with that.
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
In the grand scheme of things, turning the bench into a bed isn't expensive. Still sucks.Ā
Few_Jacket845@reddit
From what I hear, DOT usually won't consider it a sleeper berth unless it's majorly modified. The better option seems to be buying a specialty coffin to go behind the cab.
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
To make it legal is a lot of work, to add a bed is gutting the doors and taking out the passenger seat.Ā
Not a lot you can do to make hotshot not suck. Its gonna suck unless you're home daily.Ā
Few_Jacket845@reddit
I've never understood the allure of hotshot in a pickup. The rough napkin math I've done says it's better to do hotshot in a class 6 semi.
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
The idea worked better when pick ups didn't cost almost as much as a semi.Ā
But even then it wasn't great.
grizzly_850@reddit
Well nowadays that's not even true. I can get a good truck for 80k but a basic kenworth 76in sleeper will run me 200k easily.
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
How much would a cascadia go for?Ā
Before covid prices were close enough together it wasn't worth it, now everything costs so much I'm still sticking to fixing up old trucks.Ā
grizzly_850@reddit
Regardless, it'd be way more cost effective to stick to what you're doing. Parts are cheaper, less computers to mess with your truck, etc. But I wouldn't know what they're going for brand new on the lot, but a used kw was going for 180k when I looked at going O/O with a company. Went local and currently working on getting out of trucking now.
Clue-Just@reddit
Takeing out the front passenger seat opens alot of possibilities for bed/ storage/ entertainment
lowballbertman@reddit
If your over 6 foot that just isnāt gonna work.
coppertech@reddit
I've slept in a hot shot camper, it wasn't too bad.
Few-Chemical-5165@reddit
I drove truck as well as pilot car. When I was hauling houses for a buddy. His pickup truck that we used for the the pilot truck had its own little camper. At the very back where the back seats would be and it was extended, it was actually not bad. It wasn't luxurious, but it was more than long enough to sleep. A 6 foot person, no problem, I'm 5 foot 10. And it was wide enough to be comfortable enough. So if it's done right? It's not bad, but I wouldn't want to live in the truck all the time
lowballbertman@reddit
You said camper. That sounds different than on the back seat.
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
It isn't any better if you aren't over 6', cramped af. Okay for a night or two a week but not otr.Ā
redditor012499@reddit
Free diesel card too?!
Ok-Youth1323@reddit

hiplainsdriftless@reddit
At least you could make good time over the hump on the way home. Man when you start up at Sacramento itās along way to the top.
CartoonistRelevant72@reddit
Free place to live in California? That's like 5k a month already.
SidewaysGoose57@reddit
It's uhh...Battle Mountain Nevada. A real shit hole.
CartoonistRelevant72@reddit
I'm referring to the other destination. Modesto, CA. Another shit hole.
NomadTruckerOTR@reddit
So you're telling me I get to run Donner pass, and drive through Stockton and Sacramento twice a day and I don't even get paid for it?! Sign me up
coppertech@reddit
they don't go over donner, they would hit the POE. they take 88.
NomadTruckerOTR@reddit
Isn't that not truck friendly?
Locruids@reddit
Neither is the POE :D
sparkythadogg@reddit
And pay your own fuel
Dangerous_Ad4451@reddit
That Donner pass deserves extra benefits to ply. Or hazard pay if I may add.
Vegas_Rick_1987@reddit
You get to nail the farmers daughter nightlyā¦..wait til you see what she looks like though.

Largofarburn@reddit
So uh. We just going back to slavery I guess?
Canāt say Iām that surprised unfortunately.
clapped-out-cammy@reddit
Slavery would be better. Food and water isn't included with the job.
Deathwolf511@reddit

BoostedLexus@reddit
This isn't even slavery, as someone who used to live near there(elko), you're basically paying him to live be a slave. Anything east of Sparks is small towns with nothing to do
short_bed_showoff@reddit
god FUCK elko
Suge_White_619@reddit
Bro, I live in Spanish Springs, just outside of sparks. Well technically it is Sparks I guess, but yeah bro, it's bad out here. I drive OTR, and I hardly ever come back this way because there's just nothing out, ever. I didn't see the compensation part but I can't imagine it's very good
Outlandah_@reddit
I wonder is there a downtown battle mountain?
Staysleep661@reddit
Might kill you when the seasons over or if you ask too many questions about money.
Nintendude3000@reddit
The same person who wrote this job posting is the same kind of person who says "No one wants to work anymore."
GroundbreakingSir386@reddit
So, when I went to CDL school, practically everyone there was a prisoner. Many people received letters of endorsement from trucking companies willing to hire them if they obtained their CDL, which they would then take to the employment office, who would confirm with the company to see if the company would hire them, and the government would pay for their CDL. They would effectively work for nothing, but at least they had a place to sleep at night and could work seven days a week. The only sad thing is they would always get in fights with the instructors and I knew several of the students who were from jail got kicked out of the school.

NewSinner_2021@reddit

Exotic_Bathroom5382@reddit
Not really. You're not obligated to work for them and can work somewhere else.
OddSkillSet@reddit
"No, see, he gets to live on the farm, and his expenses for work are compensated by the owner. He just can't work for anyone else because all his hours are spent with us." "That sounds like slavery with extra steps."

Theyāre also extremely rude in Battle Mountain. Thereās a truck stop there. I stopped for coffee there, years ago. Iām standing at the counter waiting to pay for their terrible drip coffee, and they just ignored me. They saw me standing there, and just kept talking amongst themselves. I put the coffee on the counter and walked out. Havenāt been back since.
Mistermeena@reddit
Clean and respectful, you say?
Sailans@reddit
Like trying to find a husband for a daughter.
dances_with_fentanyl@reddit
Hmm so you could work for free with these yahoos or go to find work hauling for the Battle Mountain gold mines and make great money.
Numinak@reddit
Running Hay to CA? That's likely a Foreign owned farm, shipping that hay out of country. No wonder the compensation is so wonderful, treating it like they do their imported workers in their own country.
Waisted-Desert@reddit
That's the best pay to be found in Battle Mountain.
Practical-Display251@reddit
Better than being un housed...š
ExplorerImpossible79@reddit
If I where ever at risk of being homeless I would go OTR 4 weeks out at a time
homucifer666@reddit
Can I at least get dinner out of the deal?
arrynyo@reddit
You gotta go out into the woods and get dinner yourself.
Fixerr59@reddit
I don't think there's any "woods " around Battle Mountain. Just scrub, dirt and rocks!
papisilla@reddit
Gotta trap jack rabbits and cook them on the exhaust but only when making runs otherwise you better have that truck off so you don't burn diesel
reddichrist@reddit
Yeah and story has it that you have to grant a droit de cuissage too!
Late-Recognition5587@reddit
I was wondering if the farmers daughter was a perk. I mean, for such low, nay, no pay. There's gotta be something more to it.
overthinkingdarkskin@reddit
at least take me to dinner first if youāre gonna fuck me
Late-Recognition5587@reddit
Am I wearing lipstick? "No" Then I'm not your bch.
Late-Recognition5587@reddit
Now hold on a second. I'm in Canada, so I'm unfamiliar with the run. But, are meals included? Might just be some really great food.
But seriously, perhaps the free place to live is in a straw hut. All tiki like.
Specific_Previous@reddit
But does the farmer have a daughter. That would definitely change things for some of the thirstiest truck driving mofos.
EnvironmentalGift257@reddit
