I hate driving here
Posted by Eastcoast_Drunkmonk@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 468 comments
I moved here almost five years ago from the east coast and it still baffles me how bad the driving is here. I understand that every major city has its issues with traffic and bad drivers but I’m legit scared or angry almost everyday during my commute to work. Here’s 10 reasons why I hate driving here:
-
No one knows how four way stop signs work.
-
Red lights are a suggestion.
-
A bad driver never misses their exit.
-
Why use a signal light when I can just get over? They’ll slow down once I cut them off.
-
TEXITS
-
Zipper merging is nonexistent.
-
“Student Driver. Please Be Patient” bumper stickers.
-
Not everyone who owns a pickup truck, needs a pickup truck.
-
Slower traffic does not know how to keep right and uses the passing lane for sightseeing
-
Tolls

driving in dfw got way worse after covid
ThorManhammer@reddit
You’re right about all of this, but that’s just the way it is. Drive very defensively, and don’t react to other people’s road rage bs. Pretty much all you can do
Eastcoast_Drunkmonk@reddit (OP)
I’ve learned to stop being so reactive. I’ve had a few guns brandished at me and multiple break checks
Geoffrey-Jellineck@reddit
Driven here for nearly 30 years and never had a gun brandished. If it's happening multiple times to you, have you considered you're the problem?
StonerJesus73@reddit
I've been in Houston for 15+ years. I've had several occasions where a light tap of the horn to remind someone at a green light to put their phone down, has resulted in some over weight slob putting their pickup truck in park and hopping down their ladder to walk over and yell at me for scaring him with his hand on a open carried piece. Occasionally already drawn out. On a few occasions I'll just speed past them on the right or left and not worry about it. I just pull dashcam footage and send it somewhere.
RedditJw2019@reddit
I lived there for decades, and did have one brandished at me once. I think it also depends on what part of the city you’re in, and luck of the draw.
In my case, I honked at someone who almost hit me. So perhaps also depends on if you use your horn!
dezijugg9111@reddit
Yes I think it's op that is problem probably 🤣💀💀 dude must be pissing people off for sure.
Grand_Paramedic1734@reddit
I’ve been in Dallas for 5 years and it’s happened to me twice . Once after someone tried to merge into me while on their phone swerving through traffic. I honked and their passenger waived their gun at me.
Muted_Possession_781@reddit
Not as uncommon as you may think though. In Dallas it seems a little tame but if you go down to Houston…wow.
qolace@reddit
Holy fucking shit. I can't believe I have to say this but in this context no one deserves a gun brandished at them. It's even more disturbing that this gross comment is upvoted too. Some of you are fucking MENTAL.
sharknado523@reddit
I don't think anyone agreeing with that guy sentiment is saying that OP deserves to have a gun pulled on them. It's just that we're pointing out that there might be a reason that the conflict is escalating to that point.
P_J_Frye@reddit
OP had mentioned they were reacting in the past and that they're learning not to do that. So perhaps (s)he does realize there are things they can do differently.
I'm a new Midwest transplant to Houston and I can corroborate their findings. But being a lifelong motorcycle rider, my motto is "assume everyone else on the road is an idiot". That way my head is on a swivel, I'm not distracted by my phone, and I preplan what to do for every car near me so that I have an exit strategy. (Gotta maintain a little space to do that). I actually find it safer on my bike because I can get in and out of smaller spaces to keep safe without riding like a maniac.
elvensnowfae@reddit
It happened to me our first week moving here. Lived in Texas my entire life, moved to Dallas 3 years ago. Drove through mesquite and a dude tapped a gun at the side of his beat up Lincoln next to us both pulled up at a red light. I was terrified and my husband driving didn't keep looking either. He was rapping some song while tapping it.
I'd never seen anything like that. I will say other than that I’ve never seen it happen again in the 3 years here.
librarymania@reddit
Wait so this dude wasn’t brandishing at any one in particular, just using a gun for some added percussion? Not that brandishing is better, but wtf!
elvensnowfae@reddit
When my panic face looked over he didn't stop and made eye contact. It was terrifying and I hope I never cross paths with him again.
Dirtymondomusic@reddit
Nah if someone almost crashes into me they deserve to know they are playing a dangerous game. My life is not a joke
OodlesOfNipples@reddit
OP is a liar. Simple as.
notamyokay@reddit
Thissssss. These comments are unhinged?
Geoffrey-Jellineck@reddit
Reading is difficult for you, isn't it? Obviously no one should have a gun brandished to them, but if it's happening often to you, then you're clearly doing someone to escalate conflicts rather than deescalate them.
bagfka@reddit
Because they’re not saying OP is the issue in that specific scenario. They’re saying overall OPs driving might be more of an issue than they’re letting on. Not that hard to understand
bwh1986@reddit
Been here about 5-6 and had two guns brandished but only in the past year. Moving to downtownish has been an experience.

spookyscaryskeletal@reddit
I get what you're saying & I'm not discounting it bc people are blissfully unaware of how bad their own driving can be, but the part of dfw you're in partly matters imo. I've had people follow me on 635 & be incredibly aggressive, no flipping off or honking on my part (being followed only happened once). now my area is different & we all know we're doomed on the part of 35 I commute on lmao I think it's different for all of us with how distinct commutes & time of day can be
clandestine-chemist@reddit
We all know we’ve doomed lol!
duchess_of_nothing@reddit
I've been here over 20 yrs and had my first gun flashing at me on 35 near market hall. I was literally just driving in the far right lane and someone just had to cut me off and then show their gun..
A lot of it depends where you drive.
TheDottieDot@reddit
Yeah, I moved out here in 2017 and have never gotten brake checked or had a gun brandished; however, I saw it happen between 2 other cars. I switched to the furthest lane from the commotion, and drove a little quicker, to get away in case shots were fired.

Eastcoast_Drunkmonk@reddit (OP)
I believe self awareness is important in these scenarios. I will never say that I’m the world’s best driver but I do see a problem with the first reaction to you not getting your way on the highway is pulling out a gun.
tbear87@reddit
I'm with you. The correct response to that comment is "when is brandishing a gun over a driving dispute ever the answer" not "well, you must be the problem."
People here are INSANE.
bagfka@reddit
People here allow for zero nuance in a take.
They’re not saying OP in that specific scenario is the problem but the overall issue of driving might be more on OPs driving than they’re letting on.
tbear87@reddit
The dude listed a pattern of people pulling a gun on him, and you still want to victim blame? I don't see what "nuance" there is to evaluate. Dallas has an aggressive driving culture that is problematic. There's news stories about road rage violence regularly. This speaks to my other comment - nobody in Texas seems able to self reflect on the culture here without getting extremely defensive and blaming the individual.
In the last year I've heard stories of somebody getting stabbed for honking at someone, dozens of people driving 100mph+ on 75 every day, I've been personally followed and harassed for tapping my horn when someone cut me off and almost caused a wreck, and now this guy says people brandish guns at him over driving...but sure it's totally his fault and not the fact that people here are fucking assholes on the road at a rate that is literally driving up auto insurance rates. I'm not buying it. Have fun living in fantasy land where nothing that happens here is ever wrong at a cultural or systemic level.
AstrosJones@reddit
Native Texan and have lived in and out of the metro for 20 years. I would say everything you mentioned is accurate, but haven’t had guns pulled on me either. I do get frustrated with people but I know how many guns people have and rarely flip people off or honk excessively at them. Just not worth it around here.
Also people in the north east communicate with their horns, people here don’t unless they’re looking for trouble lol. Safe driving out there!
Altruistic_Guess3098@reddit

Unpetits@reddit
Yeah you have to take things in stride and aim to be “a loner on the road”. give yourself more braking space and be aware of what the cars behind you are doing too.
That being said, in the last decade I’ve still been rear ended by someone going 80 and not hitting their brakes during a section of slower traffic, and t-boned by someone running a red. At least I wasn’t at fault in either.
I have never had a leisurely day of driving while living here.
ClassicRead2064@reddit
That’s crazy that you’ve been here for 5 years and that’s happens to you. I just moved to the east coast (and I have a lot of complaints about the driving up here as well lol).
I lived in Texas for 25 years and never had a gun brandished or a brake check I can recall lol.

Dude, you must be a major dick head of that’s the case. Maybe it’s you not the other drivers.
Severe_Salt6052@reddit
If that shit is happening to you, it's probably you. You're probably a fucking nightmare on the road.
pokeyporcupine@reddit
Yeah, this isn't it. I don't care how obtuse a driver is being, if you ever brandish a gun at someone for any emotional reactionary reason, especially driving frustrations, you are a piece of shit. Period. Unless you're literally in actual danger, don't fucking touch it.
TheRon_Says@reddit
That’s not what he’s saying. He’s saying if all these bad things keep happening to them, it’s probably their driving that’s the problem. Is the classic “if you think it smells like shit everywhere you go, check under your shoes” line. If you’re constantly getting break checked and guns flashed at you….maybe you’re the bad driver.
bagfka@reddit
The amount of people that seemingly can’t comprehend that is astonishing
TheRon_Says@reddit
These are people who see everything as right or wrong and nothing in between or nuanced. Both parties can be wrong. Person A can be a terrible driver and person B can be an idiot for flashing a gun at person A. Both parties are wrong but one things for sure - multiple people are not flashing a gun at person A if they’re a good driver. “If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you’re the asshole.”
wannabetmore@reddit
Lots of OPs list happen frequently , but I also have never seen a gun in 18 years in Dallas.
Resisting to allow zipper merges, yes, daily (commute during rush hour getting on to 35 and most people going 10 to 25 mph, and cars will not allow someone to merge into the far right lane (happens to me about once every 2 weeks but see it happen to others).

I guess I just grew up driving this way, so to me it’s not new. We briefly lived in OKC before moving back to DFW and that drove me crazy.
It just made me realize that we are used to what we are used to. To most of us that grew up here, it’s just the way it is. I will say it used to be better, not by much..but slightly. It will just get worse the more people move here, the infrastructure just can’t handle it all.
lime-y@reddit
Exactly, I grew up here too and my first time behind the wheel in driver’s ed, was getting on 635 during rush hour. You had to learn quick to be prepared for the craziness of Dallas drivers. The infrastructure is way behind with the current population and by the time they fix it (looking at you 635) it will be behind again.
Aggressive-Tiger-545@reddit
Remember 75 from downtown? I gave you a 3 second green to red light on the on ramp. Can’t imagine it now
mojojomama@reddit
I learned to drive on 75 and it was, no shit, the most terrifying experience. When the overhead light turned green, you had a very short on-ramp upon which you had to speed up to match the traffic below you on 75, which you could not see. Then the end ramp stopped and people had two choices: cross your fingers and merge or slam on your breaks and wait for an opening (ha!) while a pile of angry drivers stacked up behind you. People that complain about Dallas traffic today don’t realize how good they have it.
Aggressive-Tiger-545@reddit

I make sure nothing on my car indicates ANY sort of political opinion, age demographic, or anything else that might lead someone to make assumptions and get mad at me. Also, I moved to Tucson 18 months ago from Dallas, and Tucson is number FOUR on the list that Dallas is number SEVEN on.
Hey did anyone notice that Los Angeles (the only place in the US I'm afraid to drive in) is NOT on that list? To me, that makes the list a bit suspect.
You might say I'm well prepared. That said, I lived in Dallas for 40 years, not one accident or ticket, and certainly no guns brandished. Tulsa, number TWELVE on the list, six years, no accident, no ticket, no guns. As I mentioned, Tucson 18 months, no issues and no guns, but I stay well away from the smuggling highway where people drive at night without lights. I'm eventually coming back to Dallas and happy to do so.
Visited in Dallas in November; drove from Love Field straight up 75 to Plano at 5:00 pm. The GREAT thing about "rush hour" in Dallas is that traffic moves at a snail's pace, which gives me plenty of time to pay attention to my driving. Oh I forgot to mention, had to drive back to Love Field at 8:00 am that next Monday...that was a real trip! But I made it, no sheet metal rearranged. Dallas driving is basically, to me, about average.

That happened to me today on 635, exit Forest Lane. Dude slowed down way below speed limit and got super irritated and honked when I passed him once it was feasible. Not a tailgater. But I will shoot the gap. It's always great when the car in front of me sees a car coming up then hits the brakes instead of the staying on the throttle.
It effectively closes the distance and puts themselves in a situation where they must rely on other drivers to compensate their backwards reaction.
BigRoach@reddit
You shouldn’t be threading traffic like that. Keep a safe follow distance between other cars.
Dawnzarelli@reddit
I had a #15 today. I was in the middle lane and they were in the right lane. I was in front of them and had my signal on to merge right. It’s a line of cars. I signal. Scooch a little. They speed up and close the gap instead of letting me over. I kept trying and they finally relented but got really angry and flipped me off like I was the asshole. Zips around me then tailgates the car in the other lane.

A couple of points. For 2: the state outlawed red light cameras around the time you would’ve moved down here, which I was in favor of (and still am) but of course that’s a risk that comes with it. 5. I think Texas is one of the very few states where you can accomplish this just cuz of the frontage roads. I don’t entirely mind it but I’ve never been brave enough to do it myself, worried I’d get stuck. 8. This just seems like a sunbelt thing, I’ve spent considerable time in Tampa and Las Vegas and it’s the same thing. I’m from the Midwest originally and I just sort of feel like people back home are more practical and frugal with their purchases. In the sun belt states, it seems a lot more common to make big expensive purchases to show off. Texas and many other sunbelt states also rank as some of the most financially stressed partially due to this. 10. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY CONCUR WITH. I used to live in the Plano area and my only options without driving 25 minutes on city streets were Sam Rayburn, Dallas north tollway and Bush Turnpike. Even with a toll tag it’s death by a thousand cuts. I’m so happy to be out of there for this exact reason.

The problem is a culture of bullying. I lived here as a kid and move back as an adult.
Normally there’s a couple bullies every school year and they act up but people put them in the place. DFW and Texas in general, you’re looking at 7/10 people living their lives as active bullies. Even if the number is closer to 3/10, you still have 4 more people who won’t do anything or side with the bully.
Truck owns also brag about taking no damage in a collision. Wrecking the other guy is a sociopathic reason to own a truck. If you can’t handle driving or parking a truck, you shouldn’t own one.
This is also why no one can figure out a 4 way stop, you either bully your way through, let people step all over you, or “learn” the wrong rules from the bullies and think you’re in the right.
Left turns go last. Always.
FaxxMaxxer@reddit
It’s funny to me that this is a super common musing from new transplants, and is posted here weekly. Yet people will still say we’re just like every other big city. We are, but also we aren’t.
We have a shitty driving culture here. It’s myopic, aggressive, and almost downright Machiavellian. And too often the people driving the biggest, loudest, most absurd hulking trucks and SUV’s are the worst offenders too with incredibly fragile egos. They’ll cut you off, and when you honk at them they just cannot help but honk back! As if your honk was an insult to them personally, and not an indicator to them of their dangerous driving.

Driving in LA is so much easier lmao wtf are you talking about
PaulieNutwalls@reddit
This is what I'm talking about
Here's a reminder that you don't even have to be on the road for our terrible drivers to kill you. : r/LosAngeles
Typical LA shit. people actually drive like they’re on crack. : r/LosAngeles
Anybody else see this genius driving the 405 today? : r/LosAngeles
Man, LA drivers are crazy as hell : r/LosAngeles
Increasingly Unhinged People : r/LosAngeles
Waymo knows not to block intersection, better than most LA drivers : r/LosAngeles
If you think L.A. drivers are bad, try driving in Scottsdale, AZ : r/LosAngeles
I had the craziest drive home from the La county fair last and just cannot believe how insane drivers are : r/LosAngeles
Vaderb2@reddit
Yes drivers in every big city are bad, but they are shockingly bad in dallas.
I literally moved to LA and can confirm that the driver here is less bad. There are more cars and more people, but dallas has the worst drivers I have ever seen.
It’s especially compounded by forced exits and left exits in dallas. Its extremely common to see people fly across the highway to left exit in dallas because siri said their exit was up.
The highway in dallas is designed like shit and the drivers are insane.
FaxxMaxxer@reddit
Dallas IS different. Last I checked we have either the highest or second highest per capita vehicle involved fatalities in the country.
We have less infrastructure for public transportation, higher speeds, larger vehicles, and more people on the road like the elderly who would be taking the train in a better equipped metro area. The metro areas you named also don’t have wide open stretches of highway where people are doing 80mph right near the heart of downtown area. Unless things have changed since I’ve been in the NorthEast, there are some differentiators that set us apart.
Littlecat10@reddit
Agreed. Dallas is absolutely different, if not from other Texas metro areas, at least from the Northeast. In addition to the reasons you stated, we’ve got no red light cameras and no radar speed enforcement.
bpeck451@reddit
Studies proved red light cameras didn’t do anything for safety. On top of the fact that the tickets were equivalent to parking tickets here they went away about as fast as they came.
And I’m guessing you have driven through high enforcement areas where the traffic cops are pulling people over for doing 3-5 over the speed limit.
Particular-Gap-6720@reddit
I can’t agree that Dallas is different though. The statistics speaks for themselves because of the speeds. Living in California, with same 5 lane highway going one of the directions, have WAY less fatalities because of speed. Imagine everyone going 55mph… And speaking on radar, they have speed enforcement by Allen/richardson now on highway 75 and pgbt has state troopers out every day. A law passed recently for 75 as well that they are reducing speed limits from 70 to 65. We all got our own options, but hey, each to their own right. This is Reddit for heavens sake haha.
PaulieNutwalls@reddit
Map shows which major U.S. cities are the most dangerous for drivers
Number 7. But per capita vehicle crashes or fatalities are going to be higher in car dependent cities where everyone is driving. NE cities have far, far fewer people driving per capita period.
kremlinmirrors@reddit
I would take driving in Boston any day over driving here. Might take longer, but way less stressful. I found people to be much more predictable.
PaulieNutwalls@reddit
If you're from there it's because that's what you're used to. I have no issue driving in Dallas but I grew up here and learned to drive here (insert joke). Like I said, go to literally any local sub for cities and there's fuckloads of posts about how nobody knows how to drive here, and fuckloads of comments from people relaying "I am from X and it's crazy out here!" It's a trope. It's not that different.
Boston specifically has the lowest turn signal usage rate of anywhere I've lived and driven so the 'predictable' aspect I find hilarious.
tired_and_sad_2020@reddit
I’m actually from here and grew up driving here. 🤷🏻♀️ my opinion still stands.
HoneyIShrunkMyNads@reddit
Yeah this is the biggest thing, I could predict how drivers would react much more easily when I lived in Chicago. Dallas is fucking unpredictable.
PlusDescription1422@reddit
Literally nobody drives like this in NYC or Boston. Are you kidding. I grew up there. People are so polite in Boston.
PaulieNutwalls@reddit
You grew up in NYC or Boston and drove a lot? I lived in both places as an adult that had to commute all over NE in my car. Drove to work every day in Boston. They absolutely do.
PlusDescription1422@reddit
Yes I used to drive to Boston once a month. People drive crazy in NYC but it’s nothing compared to Dallas. The running red lights is absolutely insane.
PaulieNutwalls@reddit
One a month, an expert
eatingvegetable@reddit
In NYC honking is another language and you might get flipped off. No to few large trucks.
Texas (and Denver tbh) and I’m afraid to honk in case someone’s a nut and has a gun. Also large trucks.
PaulieNutwalls@reddit
I've lived in NYC as I said. I never got the whole "being an asshole is actually cultural here, that middle finger is just New Yorkers being New Yorkers!" It means what it means here, fuck you.
eatingvegetable@reddit
I'll take a fuck you and give one back in NY, in texas I'll put my head down and keep driving

Try Houston and get back to me 😂

Alternative_Path9692@reddit
Another big issue here is people who KNOW a lane is ending or that their onramp is coming up, and instead of waiting in that line like normal people do, they ride along the side where the lane is empty and then try to scooch in at the last second. Happens commonly on the 30 east/west exit split coming off of 75; also common on the onramp to 75 south from Coit.
I’ve had to install front and rear dashcams as I drive all over Dallas for work. It’s the only way these days
Remarkable-Fennel-27@reddit
Must never been to Atlanta Miami or Houston lol
Goodbyetopher@reddit
I wonder if this is due to all the third party driving schools here in Texas that are just passing people without really even evaluating them to certain standards
Paid_Redditor@reddit
Where at in the east coast? Cause I’m in New York and I feel like 9/10 of these apply to here and not Dallas. Also Dallas has unique drivers depending on where you’re at, for instance 75 & lovers area is swear is a magnet for the inpatient.
TBill05@reddit
Move back, imo
jlrwoodworks@reddit
I loved driving around the DC beltway and up and down I-95 so much better than I like driving here. Inconsiderate assholes everywhere here.

MSPTurbo@reddit
I have only lived here for 3 years, and I WFH so I only drive 500 miles a month. I have seen couches, random bumpers, oil barrels, ladders more than once on highways here. Lived in Kansas for over 10 years and never saw nonsense like this.
UltraMegaMe@reddit
There're 4x as many people in the DFW metroplex than in the entire state of KS, in an area 9x smaller. So the opportunity to see weird shit is considerably higher.
BeenzandRice@reddit
Isn’t that where we should put them?
Nuke_1568@reddit
Don't forget I-35, I literally had the kitchen sink fall out the back of a jalopy!
Nearby-Oil-8227@reddit
Insurance will consider you at fault if you don’t specify the item in the road was “in motion” when it hit your car. For example, if you hit the sink because it was already in the road but didn’t have time to avoid it due to risking hitting another car, they will say you’re at fault, but if the sink is reported as flying at your vehicle when you strike it, suddenly you aren’t at fault. Crazy! Sadly know this from multiple experiences with debris in the road here
Brush_Soft@reddit
After a tire flew off their car (rim too) then hit my windshield, I have gotten a dash cam since that incident!
Nuke_1568@reddit
Interesting, I didn't know that. Thankfully I avoided it, but even if I hadn't, it was actually moving, it LITERALLY fell out of the car in front of me. 😂
Alcoholic720@reddit
Y U NO I-35W? lol
Particular-Gap-6720@reddit
Bush is actually the safest in my opinion when it comes to “junk” on the side
Alcoholic720@reddit
Yeah, fair. It's the one I drive on the least. So probably my fault O:-)
Particular-Gap-6720@reddit
No fault at all. We all here for input haha. You named some very good ones tho. I been a delivery driver through out DFW now for 3 years so I can say I seen all the dumped bulky trash on every highway you named tho.
Alcoholic720@reddit
I drive cars/SUVs so I have nothing to drop actually.
My worst was coming home from work one day on 35 and there was a full 8+ foot ladder in my lane and I couldn't change lanes.
Luckily AF it was straight with the lane so my mustang barely cleared it. lol
Particular-Gap-6720@reddit
When does 911 have fucks to give. Lmfao
Alcoholic720@reddit
Well this was the 90s, so I was still learning, lol.
jadedwishes@reddit
Once I saw someone holding a mattress with one hand, and driving with the other hand on 635. Don't worry though, it was also tied to the top of the car with what looked like dental floss 👌
WayneRooneysHairPlug@reddit
I just got back from the tire place getting screws or nails removed from two of my tires.
ArcaneFrostie@reddit
You forgot the weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds. I saw a charger weaving in an out of fast moving minimal traffic total his car, it was glorious.
crustycheesestix@reddit
As a fellow east coaster who has lived in Dallas for almost 8 years this is so very accurate 👏🏼👏🏼
wizxard_@reddit
Honestly it’s not hard to get a car off a lot here. Wouldn’t be surprised if half of the people don’t have an actual license, insurance or idea as to what tf they’re doing. Visited Cali and can say that their roads/driving habits are way better.
Tough_Bonus_5568@reddit
I was born and raised right here in DFW and I’m just coming on here to say that the timeline fits. Before COVID I loved driving. But that has drastically changed since (what I’m assuming and attributing to) the influx of people that have moved down here.
Not saying Dallas had perfect drivers before, but we all knew how to exist in the chaos. Now it’s just stressful af. You’re trying to balance the organized chaos you know with the unknown and now driving just fucking sucks lol.
ResidentFlan1556@reddit
I had to change my driving habits once moving here. Just like everyone else. You must be super defensive and try to anticipate anything. I changed my mentality of driving and refuse to “be in a hurry” and take my time. If I’m late, I’m late. I’d rather arrive to my destinations safely. I’ll let all the road ragers go around and I’ll see them at the next stop light.
mmancino1982@reddit
I've been here for like 15 years and have lived in many cities, including abroad, and agree this place and most drivers here are complete fucking idiots that should have their licenses revoked. I've never seen so many single vehicle accidents either. I wish we had an idiot qualifier added to fines for those dipshits that crash their vehicle because they weren't paying attention, on their phones etc. And forget bad weather. That's another complaint altogether
kovsnart@reddit
This is a list of reasons to love driving in Dallas.
LoneStar_67@reddit
Safe driving education should be a mandatory course for graduation for all high schools.
SameSadMan@reddit
Believe it or not, drivers are worse in at least one other city: Atlanta. I moved back to Dallas after a few yrs working jn ATL - they truly set the bar (low) out there.
DarkSpecterr@reddit
What happens in ATL? What makes it so bad compared to us
SameSadMan@reddit
The thing that stuck with me was how bad ppl were about pulling out in front of oncoming traffic. Cars just moseying on out of a parking lot while I'm 100 ft away and coming at them at 40 mph. And then theyd take forever to decide which of the two lanes they're gonna ride in.
Other than that it's all the same stuff. Every big city is bad to drive in and had all the same problems with traffic, and every city claims that "we have the worst drivers here". Atlanta was just the one city where I found myself believing it.
mojojomama@reddit
I grew up in Dallas and live in Atlanta now. I second this post! Half the people are slow as hell, the other half crazier than Dallas. Plus people don’t turn on their lights at night and Atlanta has winding narrow streets with parking on both sides. Dallas is the Thunderdome, no doubt, but avoiding dumbassery in Atlanta takes a special touch.
SameSadMan@reddit
Thank you for your courage
Maximus-Festivus@reddit
Is there a lot of Chevy impalas and Kia Optimas in ATL?
Eastcoast_Drunkmonk@reddit (OP)
I grew up taking road trips between Atlanta and New York. Atlanta is a war zone when it comes to driving.
Same-Raspberry-6149@reddit
I’ve been here for 4 years from Chicago and I’ve never seen so many flipped vehicles from accidents. My town has 120k residents and the accidents last year were 10%. 10 of those involved deaths. I’ve seen a lot of fender benders in Chicago, but I’ve never seen so many accidents that total out both cars.
QueenGor3@reddit
Yesterday someone DEAD STOPPED on PGB to get over into a lane that wasn't an exit. I almost rear ended them at 70mph but I generally stay far enough back that I won't be in that predicament - I was shooken up for a little bit after.
I've been here since 2020, I generally stay off the road during rush hour traffic and work a job where I'm leaving at 3:30 so I try my best to not encounter the worst of the worst but here's my noticing
People FREQUENTLY drive late nights on 635 with no headlights on.
People would rather crash into you than miss their exit.
No one wants to let you over, for whatever reason, blinker or not.
The speed limit doesn't exist.
Every road rule is a suggestion here, genuinely, and people truly live like that here.
33NorthTX@reddit
All True. I have lived in Los Angeles, driven all over California. Worked and lived in Atlanta ( real traffic) and traveled and worked all over America from Chicago to Seattle to the mid- Atlantic driving rental cars in all those cities. Dallas Texas drivers are a special breed of distracted, careless, aggressive, and absentee.

I've recently been hesitating to start rolling when the light turns green - just to make sure some ass isn't trying to make it through the light that just turned red for them.
casiepierce@reddit
You should. Ask me how I know.
mojojomama@reddit
Plano use to lead the country in red light running accidents. Always give a two-count before hitting the gas, especially in the northern burbs.
sleightofcon@reddit
Either this or people are on their phones. Seems that people never go when it turns green.
casiepierce@reddit
If you've lived here for 5 years and haven't figured out how to avoid 635, you might be the problem ..
broadcity90210@reddit
My favorite is when the street is clearly wide enough for only one of us to pass and they don’t even budge their car or move. Just expect the other driver to get out of the way. Ridiculousss
mkravota@reddit
That's why I take the train whenever I can

You’ve clearly never driven in Maryland or on the beltway in the D.C. metro area. It makes LBJ and George Bush feel like smooth sailing. Also for every student driver sticker in Texas there are x20 in Maryland. 😭
Eastcoast_Drunkmonk@reddit (OP)
495 was really bad in the mid 2000’s. The last time I was up there I was going to Greenbelt and the traffic was light even while it was snowing. Maryland cops don’t play around when it comes to speeding though.
CalicoCrazed@reddit
oh man I just moved back from up there and it’s like the Wild West. I was living in Rockville and my office is across from the White House. The commute was insaneeeeeee
Lopsided_Onion1259@reddit
I've been here 20 years and it's become worse the last 5. The speeding here is insane and there's no law enforcement to stop it. It's either people are driving too fast mixed in with people driving 20-30 below the speed limit. The on and off ramps are complete garbage. Lastly a 5 mile trip can take 20 mins because the streets are poorly designed.
mts6175@reddit

A Day in the Life of an American Trucker
pangalacticpothealer@reddit
Texas law does not specify who should go first at a four-way stop, but the driver on the right usually has the right of way. However, some recommend waiting for the most aggressive driver to move first. This is not law, however.
True
Lookout. I once saw someone at the 183 I-35 split pull their car perpendicular to the flow of traffic, cross two lanes of traffic, the center protected area and two more lanes to not miss their exit.
They don't want to have an accident. They'll brake.
Look for the tire tracks in the mud.
This makes sense. I've never heard of it.
Meaningless.
And yet...
One of my biggest annoyances.
State needs to finance more highways, and the lottery can't do it anymore. We don't have a state income tax here.
Advanced_Shirt_4719@reddit
Four way stops are the same in every state??
pangalacticpothealer@reddit
I don't think the law governing who has the right of way is the same in every state.

arlenroy@reddit
Yeah, Texans like to blame west coast for everything, buddy CHP would be up your ass so fast trying to pull the shit I see in Dallas. West coast my ass. Shit we're the ones trying to merge with our blinker on only to realize you just gotta make break for it and hope someone slows down. People drive genuinely well because cops are fucking everywhere, you think taxes are high in California, try getting a fucking speeding ticket, $1800 later your ass ain't ever going 80 in a 55 again. On the Tollway you gotta be tracking your quarter mile acceleration time to make sure you're going fast enough to take turn 3 at Talladega.

5,000%. Honestly anyone who disagrees is just a MAGA Republican who dislikes the west coast for ideological reasons, possibly has never been there, but is absolutely completely divorced from reality with respect to how driving works out there.

If they dont know how a 4 way stop works then it’s a big indicator they dont have a license and never took the test. If they actually took their drivers test then they would know what a 4 way stop is. In Texas you dont need a license to buy a car. Planet Ford on Inwood leased my boyfriend a $60,000 mustang with no license before we met. They only care about money not safety.
SirVashtaNerada@reddit
You have cunts driving too fast, cunts driving too slow, and cunts just being cunts because everyone is mean and hateful. People have no concept of the value of human life. They drive like their life and the lives of those around them just don't matter in the slightest.

Lived in Chicago for 15 years & taught me to drive FAST ! Early toll roads with very few or no speed traps..zero accidents...
Then Cincinnati for 10 years taught me to stay away from every car as far as possible - 'cuz you never knew what they were gonna do. (Like 20% of the time coming to a complete STOP when merging to highiway..) - Zero accidents...
Dallas for 10 now - so all I can do is driver faster than everyone (which is damn tough) & stay away ! And that means 4 accidents(none my fault) total 3 vehicles, all to uninsured motorists...All with my speed at 0 mph... one while parked at QuickTrip filling my car with gas...one in parking lot waiting to pull into space..one while turning left - and guy zagged around traffic from the other direction & I was T-boned...
All very true...
Advanced_Shirt_4719@reddit
Lived in Arkansas all my life with zero accidents. Moved to Dallas and 3 different people hit me in 2 years. 1) a tow truck hit and ran me at a red light 2) a guy from mexico who only had a mexican license and insurance hit me, didn’t speak english at all 3) a 16 yr old unlicensed and uninsured kid in a pickup truck totaled my Nissan on 635. For full coverage insurance it would cost me $700 per month, i can only qualify for liability because of all these idiots hitting me.
Aggressive-Tiger-545@reddit
Yeah had a new side stop me on tollway. Got his license plate hit and run and of course the plate was a black Chevy truck and this car that hit he was a silver Altima. Couldn’t even open my driver door.
ElBrancheroMKE@reddit
Because highway cops here don't give a shit. I was coming south on 35 from 635 around Royal and a dude blew past me at about 90 weaving in and out of lanes. A cop merged on and I was like, "yeah, get that asshole!" and it was like he didn't even see the car even though it was right there in from of him. DPS policing is a joke
Advanced_Shirt_4719@reddit
Abbott sent all our state troopers to the border as well so we have no extra enforcement either. Been driving for lyft and uber in dallas for 2 years and have yet to see ONE texas highway patrol. It’s baffling. The streets and highways are literal warzones and DPD doesn’t give two shits as long as you dont kill anyone.
GravitationalEddie@reddit
You forgot, "x lane ends, merge y" means get in x lane and ignore everything.

This is all true, as you witness. This is just the current custom and it appears that the custom may not change soon. I’m 47 and have driven here since I was 15. I’ve lived in a few different major cities and they definitely all have their issues. But for DFW, nothing pisses me off more than me going 5mph over the speed limit already, yet some idiot in a jacked up truck tailgates me when there’s tons of space on the road. Cherry on top is when this happens at night, 9 times out of 10 these morons will have their brights on too. Truly makes me seethe
Outrageous-Ad3936@reddit

WrightLex@reddit
Yeah people here seem to not know a passing lane exists. IF YOU ARE IN THE LEFT LANE AND GOING SLOWER OR THE SAME SPEED AS THE CAR ON YOUR RIGHT YOU NEED TO GET OFF THE ROAD
AggieAloha@reddit
I agree on the zipper merging, but I’ve driven on the east coast NYC/NJ (visit in laws annually if not more) and prefer the traffic here - and LA. Curious to see what your east coast gripes are if these things annoy you here. Traffic has gotten a lot worst with the influx of east/west coast migration (seen a lot of out of state license plates in the past 5 years) imho.
Brilliant-Both@reddit
You’re going 60 miles an hour in the center lane on eastbound LBJ and there’s a semi in front of you the car behind you says you should go and he has on his brights and 6 inches from your bumper

You should try driving in the hellscape that is inside the beltway of Washington, DC. Dallas is a cake walk in comparison.
Dapper_Connection526@reddit
Point 2 is a big one for me to the point I wait after a light turns green to make sure no one is coming. Point 8 is another one that annoys me; so many pickup truck drivers that are driving like racecar drivers weaving in and out of lanes. For me, I go the speed limit and stick to the right lanes. Also, tailgating is a big problem. Therefore, I always map my routes so I can see on GPS maps when congested traffic is approaching. That way I can start braking and ensure the people behind me know we are slowing down.

Welcome to Texas. But you do understand that half the people here aren't from here. They brought their bad driving habits with them.
Stark_Industries1701@reddit
That list can be posted for ANY CITY it’s all the same especially if you transplant some somewhere else and since you have decided that not all people who drive a pick- up truck should remember where you live Texas and Pick-UPS go together like peas and carrots. Maybe you need to buy a bigger vehicle.

You think 4 way stop signs are bad, wait until you come across a roundabout. The burbs are beginning to put them in.
Past-Neck-4552@reddit
It has become exponentially worse in recent years. I sold my Harley about 6 years ago because of the insane traffic style in Dallas now. Hillcrest is like NASCAR for amateurs suffering a psychotic break. No one stops at stop signs or red lights when turning right at the intersection. I has someone pass me on Campbell Rd by the University at 100 mph a few months ago. I commuted in LA for 6 years. Much of that on a motorcycle. Dallas is far worse now.

How about:
Drivers with zero insurance on their vehicles
Drivers with suspended or expired driver's licenses
Drivers with expired inspections tickets (like WAY expired)
Drivers with fake paper tags on vehicles that you KNOW could not have passed an inspection.
Ever since that woman with an expired DL and zero insurance in a truck that wasn't hers ran a light and I hit her, I'm hypersensitive to spotting "riding dirty" vehicles. Can count at least 4 when out and about with inspections stickers 6 months or more old; meaning the insurance has lapsed or didn't have it to begin with. 🎵🎶 It's like a jungle sometimes. It makes me wonder. How I keep from going under. 🎶🎵 😂

Travelfool_214@reddit
At a 4-way stop sign intersection in Texas, who comes to a COMPLETE STOP FIRST is what matters. It is NOT who "gets there first" that is relevant. The general rules are also as follows:
- Yield to the Right or yield to the straight: If two vehicles stop at the same time, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right. If two vehicles stop at the same time in opposing lanes (in opposite directions of travel), the vehicle intending to turn has to yield to the driver going straight. If both vehicles are going straight, it doesn't matter who goes first.
- When unsure, drivers can communicate with hand signals or gestures to clarify intentions.

Top_Clothes_4768@reddit
How to drive in Dallas. Never argue with someone on the road, when someone tries to hit me and of cause got defensive thinking they right, I wanted to flip, but I put my hand on my chest and did the calm down/ relax motion. We didn’t hit each other, relax buddy, eyes back on road and don’t let rage get both of us. People get really shocked when I do that, and it keeps people focused back, without having to drive with rage home. Also drive in advance meaning. Read the road scene ahead, for instance I look at four cars ahead watching for break lights on highway, I don’t stay behind vehicles I can’t see ahead especially during rush hour, always give space for rushing or speeding vehicles, let them go, be the bigger person and always deescalate things as much as possible. You are better having close events than crashing because you are in the right. Coming for a driver with zero tickets, 14years driving experience, under 30 driver. I think what majorly played this role, was having to drive without insurance in the early days of my driving Yh. I will rather come home safe with close calls and clean car, than having a wrecked vehicle due to claiming I am in the right. There is no right or wrong, do what it takes to safely get back home to your family 100%.

I learned how to drive in Pittsburgh. Whole different things than Boston, which is different than Baltimore, and both of them are different than NYC. DFW rules. Rush hour is 85mph bumper to bumper till it's 20mph. That occurs in 50 feet. For God's sakes look for the 8' 4x4s that drop off of trucks. Both while they are falling and afterwards. Watch out for squids (future organ donors) riding sport bikes at double the speed limit with no helmet and damn few clothes making 3 lane merges without warning. Watch out for 4WD pickups anytime, but especially on slippery roads they believe the laws of physics don't apply to them.

It didn't used to be like this. I'm not saying Dallas had good drivers, most Texas drivers aren't great. They think the left lane is a cruising lane and not a passing lane. But the red light stuff has gotten so bad in the last 10 years. I driver around Dallas for my work and I see at least 20 cars running red lights daily. I hated the red light cameras because I think they're unconstitutional and an invasion of privacy, but they worked.

But they don't have drivers Ed in the schools and the "I'm polite simply by saying sir and ma'am even if I'm being a huge dick" attitude of Texans means I shouldn't be surprised really.

SwanRonson01@reddit
I'll add two, they're related
Example: I'm in the left going 80 passing someone going 75. Guy rolls up behind going 90 and immediately tailgates because they can't wait the 10 seconds it takes me to pass.
JohnnyElectron@reddit
Moved here 2 years ago from the Midwest and fully agree! I think a large part of the blame can be placed in two buckets.
The speed limits on all the highways here are higher than most densely populated areas so drivers are just going faster while a handful of others aren’t driving the speed of traffic.
There are so many damn highway interchanges where you enter one highway from the left most lane and have to get over 4-5 lanes in a 1/4 mile to get to the next highway or vice versa.
JakobPluver@reddit
Well, yeah. And your point is?
Weekly_vegan@reddit
And what are these bad drivers supposed to do? Take our amazing public transit? /s 😂😂daily commute goes from 30mins to 3 hours and 45 mins.
I'm fortunate enough to be able to take a short commute . But if i couldn't, then that would be more problematic driver on the road.
Everyone gets a truck/SUV because they are scared to die and think it's safer. I've been involved in a hit run and have seen a hit and run. That tells me lots of people are driving without insurance or without a license. You don't fix this problem by adding more lanes and yelling at people to learn to drive. It will just get worse until we build BETTER public transit.. If it isn't better people who suck at deiving will not use it.
New_Background3600@reddit
9 is incorrect. Everyone speeds constantly, there is very little enforcement of posted speed signs. It is uniquely a Texas thing and mostly a Dallas thing. You need to slow down

Eastcoast_Drunkmonk@reddit (OP)
I should’ve been more scientific on 9. I’m talking about on 2 lane highways where it’s customary to keep right. 360, 20 east, 35 north, etc. I agree there are people that go way too fast but 50 in a 65 is dangerous for anyone behind you.
