Basis charter schools

Hello,
My kid got selected in lottery for BASIS charter school that they are going to open in Plano. Currently going to FRISCO ISD. I’m pretty new to US & does not have much insight on the charter schools. Is it worth changing from ISD to charter schools?
Illustrious_Gain5235@reddit
Never go to basis it’s terrible for the kids
I know as a former teacher

Hello, my son just got his seat in 8th grade at BASIS Plano. Two of his friends who attended last year moved back to FISD. I'm confused and looking for feedback on their education style. I heard they don't use Chromebooks and the approach is very traditional.

My kid is gong to join Basis Charter School , Plano in 2025 , 9th grade .. anyone else on the same boat ?
cybergovy@reddit
Yes same here- I will have one in 2nd grade, 7th grade and 9 grade this fall.

Go to jasper and take as many APs as you can
you will be in the same class as literal geniuses (1550+ SATs in 10th, national level debate kids)
somewhat toxic and overcompetitive, but for college prep it's unmatched

Basis has a very rigorous academic curriculum. Every charter school is different, and since this will be a new school, I’m not sure exactly what it will be like. However, they are very well-known for academic achievement. If your child wants to learn a lot and is comfortable with advancing quickly, I think he or she will flourish. I plan to start my child there in the fall.

Well, then let’s stay connected

I'm planning for my two kids to start in the Richardson campus in the fall also, and also have a lot of questions like you. Thanks for starting a post on this.

Hey, I know this post was from a while ago, but would you mind sharing how it’s going for your kids at the Richardson campus? My daughter got a spot for the 2026-2027 school year, and I’m considering it.
Intelligent-Look-560@reddit
We love it. There are still few things they need to improve but we love their curriculum and my kid is flourishing. We are definitely staying for the next year.
indrapats2800@reddit
Where are your kids in Richardson or Plano Basis ?
Intelligent-Look-560@reddit

I joined our first virtual meet-and-greet session with the school heads a couple of days ago, and they seemed very nice and promising in their commitment to providing the best for my child. I hope to see many of you there in the fall.

I'm considering BASIS for 2026 for 6th grade at the Plano campus. What has your experience been like so far?
Total_Bear9350@reddit

I think your paying tax dollars already and both pisd and fisd are legit good. Sure curriculum separate from isd. These 2 Charter Plano Richardson will be new so while reviews from other basis are good. Unsure what the new campuses will do and who are teachers. . But I think It'll depend on mix of kids. It's pretty competitive at the pisd in the area. The locationWhere is going to be placed in plano. All the surrounding elementaryschools are A plus stars already. . Skaggs, Wyatt, Andrew's, Mathews Hegecoxe. Specifically the ones that feed into to rice middle school and Jasper. (have Scripps spelling winners, state robotic team winners, fine arts are top notch). many of the elementary kids do extra school on Sundays as well at Jasper. (everyone calls it Chinese math but it's not just math they do other subjects like chinese) . If the new charter school can peel off some of the highly motivated students/education oriented families already in the area. They'll automatically test high. The question is what they do with the average or below average student?
Weak-Lavishness3155@reddit
Kids going to Rice Middle with high academic achievement will not go to Basis. Rice has been a great school for years and the programs are set for multiple level of students. For example, on level, honors, and math rocks offer three level of math for one grade. Basis will not have the same resources.
Zestyclose-Rest3060@reddit (OP)
Nice perspective. Thanks for your feedback.
Legitimate-Rich6526@reddit
I somehow do not buy into basis schools being really better than Plano elementary schools like Skaggs , Wyatt and middle schools like Rice.
We visited the facility today, it was kind of meh compared to these other schools.
While it is too early to comment, the teachers at the ISD schools have many more years of experience at their respective schools. Also teachers at PISD are paid more than Basis teachers in the area.
So I am not really sure what is so good about Basis. At the high school level, there might be some advantages, but Jasper is already so good.
Can someone please give me some indication of why basis might be better. It is very close to where we live , so we are considering the school, but I just dont see why they are considered good.
Zestyclose-Rest3060@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I had a similar thought after visiting the campus but then I realized it was too early to tell. My idea is to let it go this academic year and if things doesn’t go well, would switch back to ISD.
FollowingNo4648@reddit
My daughter went to 2 different charter schools for elementary school, and i would never recommend one. She had a new teacher every other week, and there was zero discipline. Students just do what they want, and they have nothing when it comes to extracurricular activities, clubs, or sports.
Alternative_Camera_5@reddit
Which charter schools?

Life School and Harmony

We transferred from a private school to BASIS Austin and recently moved to Plano and transferred to BASIS Plano.
We really enjoyed the curriculum and culture for BASIS Austin and are looking forward to going to the Plano campus.

That good to hear
Otherwise-Feed-4795@reddit
Hi! I came across this almost by accident, but thought I'd chime in, in case it helps. I am familiar with Basis schools, as I used to live in Arizona and they are well known there. Basis was known to be a great school there. They are very focused on academics, and my understanding is that this is a school for families whose top priority is academics. I also went to one of their presentations for these new campuses and they kind of get to that point as well. I did not feel that it was a good fit for us, as I am more focused on balance for my kids and want them to also put energy into other things as well (sports, theater, etc). I would not be opposed to it if this is something that appeals to you- you can always apply, go to one of their coffee talks to learn more, and then decline if you feel it is not a good fit.

Hello! Can you tell me how did you get on the WhatsApp parents chat? My kids will attend to the one in Richardson. thank you 😊

I searched for BASIS Plano group on Facebook. Parents shared the WhatsApp group link for each grade level there. However, I don’t a Facebook group for the Richardson campus, so this information may not be helpful to you.

Thanks for posting this. My kids also won the lottery and will be joining in the fall. They have always gone to charter schools and had no issues. Looking forward to the school year with Basis Plano, and giving the school a chance since it is new.
LadyTsukiyo@reddit
You might be better moving to Plano and transferring then to Plano ISD schools. I went through from Jackson to Plano Senior High and had no issues. PSHS offered Spanish, French, German, ASL, Mandarin and i think Latin. Or Vines offered Latin. It's been some years.
Dohmynameisgone@reddit
Plano schools no longer offer Latin or German.

Current BASIS parents with kiddo in lower (elementary) school.
TLDR: We're Luving It! Sadly, BASIS schools are for every family.
Compared to prior IB schools and ISDs (in CA, MA & TX), we found BASIS TX excels in
+++ A culture/system where kids are trained to be self-organized scholars who "own" their education
+ Advanced & rigorous curriculum, \~0.5 to 2 grades ahead of most ISDs depending on grade/subject
+ Higher after-school workload, homeworks/projects/quizzes/tests
+ Competence and responsive teachers and adminstrators (most)
+ Excellent communication at all levels from subject teachers to Head of School
+ Excellent value compared to sending a kid to BASIS Private or Independent School
- High turnout rate in teachers (many due to performance)
- Lack of value lunch option (\~$7)
- Limited school clubs
TealPanda2@reddit
Frisco and Plano ISDs are going to provide more opportunities than any charter school. From multiple levels of academic rigor, to support services, to variety of electives, to sports options, to foreign language options, to variety of admin and staff, to diversity of student body in every sense.
Also, charter schools can and have shut down without warning in the middle of the school year because they are a business. So if their business is not as profitable as they planned, they can just go away fully interrupting your child’s education and forcing you to unexpectedly change schools

I definitely would never put my kids in those schools, it's like a step up from home schooling
bellum1@reddit
Some are great, some terrible. No real oversight, so it’s a gamble. I wouldn’t, but I’m a former teacher, so I might be biased. Frisco ISD is good, and one of the big draws to Frisco.
Zestyclose-Rest3060@reddit (OP)
Thank you for your inputs
zatchstar@reddit
To add to this “no oversight” Charter schools are businesses, so if they are not sustainable they can and will shut down in the middle of the year keeping your tuition and leaving you out to dry.
See hope christian academy that just did this in Plano.
Emotional_Bat8372@reddit
Idk about this specific school but I'm pretty sure charter schools are free
zatchstar@reddit
Ah. You are correct! I was mixing them up with private schools.
mistiquefog@reddit
Seems like a good school focussed on STEM.
Most of the classmates would be Asian, I don't know if that's a bother for you.
UltraMegaMe@reddit
Gonna be true in pretty much all the Frisco ISD schools too, bigot.
mistiquefog@reddit
Hmm but FISD does not mention only one international language option on its website i.e.:- Mandarin
This is exactly what happens when you post without information. IDIOT.
deejaysmithsonian@reddit
My wife did some research into BASIS charter schools, and it looks like homework starts early on and ramps up a ton as they get older. To the point that extracurricular activities may be impossible to include in your kid’s schedule. To us, that just sounded like way too much pressure to put on the kids, so we opted out of pursuing it further.
Zestyclose-Rest3060@reddit (OP)
Thank you !!
