Say hello to PR57. The PR57 is a concealed carry pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm that utilizes a rotary barrel and stripper clips, instead of magazines to achieve a compact, ultra lightweight body, that still holds 20 rounds in the grip.

Don’t care what the haters say, I think this is kind of cool and if it’s not too expensive, I think it can find a place in the market.

"Innovative". Steyr-Hahn model of 1912 has entered the chat

Nah mate, the Steyr-Hahn 1912 was hammer fired. This is a Roth-Krnka (Roth-Steyr) 1907 which was striker fired.
Bill1923-@reddit
Nope, the PR57 has a concealed hammer and a long double-action-only trigger.
thrwaway75132@reddit
This isn’t their first rodeo with fixed mag pistols. The Grendel .380 (which is like the grandfather of the KelTec P9) is an internal box mag.
TheFlyingM16@reddit
That's interesting, I hadn't seen that one before, thank you. If they made the new one in 9mm or 380 I would probably buy one just cause It's wack.

I cringed when I saw the bullet hit the water behind the target!
I would hope a manufacture would exercise at least basic gun safety in their ads!

The hells it gonna do, bounce back?
kceNdeRdaeRlleW@reddit
Ever skip a rock across a lake? The stones bounce off the surface of the water because at the rivht speed and angle, the surface tension of the water makes the water as hard as cement.
Bullets will ricochet farther and with more force than that rock you skipped, and at an uncontrolled angle.
Neil Armstrong bounced the X-15 off the atmosphere during one of his flights, and he was hitting air! The Apollo astronauts had to account for atmospheric reentry angles, too-too shallow and they would have bounced off and shot back into space.
Snider83@reddit
Cool. Practical for ban states, novel for everyone else
Sirboomsalot_Y-Wing@reddit
It might have merits for everyone else. It’ll be one of the only pistols with this capacity at this size, and if it’s reliable (which removing the removable magazine should help with) then it might be competitive

Under 14oz empty!!! 5.7 rounds are what, 70grains total at most? 20 of them are 1,400 grains, 7,000 grains to a pound so...less than a quarter pound of ammo? Well under 1lb fully loaded. Holy crap.
Less than .94" wide at the fattest point.
4.6" ROTATING barrel. (Rotating barrel guns like the Beretta PX4 and most Grand Powers are known for low recoil and low bore axis.)
Less than 5" tall with irons.
And they say they've got an optics mount setup for it.

IMO the thing that will make or break this will be the reliability
JimMarch@reddit
Literally break it lol.
But yeah. No question.
One thing though - sometimes you get a bad magazine, right?
In this case, if the gun is good, no chance of getting a bad mag!

From the reports I've seen, George did make this work in the Grendel P10. It shot just fine. Weird little thing...
TargetOfPerpetuity@reddit
Pretty sure their very first 9mm handguns waaaay back in the day were like this -- no detachable magazines and fed with stripper clips.
spidersgeorgVEVO@reddit
I really appreciate Kel-Tec because their r&d process seems entirely oriented around "would this be cool?" Considerations like "is this practical?" never cross their minds. Some of their stuff ends up pretty good. Some of it ends up really bad. But all of it is at least interesting.
LiberalLamps@reddit
If they used better materials, I'd have a few Kel-Tec's. Probably the most innovative company in the industry, even if a lot of their designs are wacky.
255001434@reddit
100%. I like their designs a lot, but I wish they would build them better. I get that it's to keep the cost down, but it makes them seem more like toys than serious weapons.

tex91@reddit
Getting away from magazines is the wrong direction. Unless this is specifically geared to arm Californians.
TerryWhiteHomeOwner@reddit
Is it really, though?
When you take a step back and look at pistol development you realize just how much of what we accept as necessities now a'days were the result of military or law enforcement applications. Big bulky guns with high capacities and quick change mags.
But for civvies almost all of that stuff is completely redundant. We've seen a trend of civie firearms becoming smaller, lowering capacity, and losing controls/redundant features for the sake of weight and comfort because EDCs aren't meant for gun fighting they're meant for personal protection. The amount of real self defense situations that require reloading after 15 shots is absurdly small, 20 shots even smaller.
So to me Keltec saying "fuck it" and getting rid of a magazine to jam 21 shots into a slim, light, and cheap package seems like a sensible, if radical, approach.
Snider83@reddit
It might be a weight reduction thing. Mainly for ban states i’d imagine though. Plus… kinda cool
Gemmasterian@reddit
Doesn't help in basically any ban state lol we all are regulated on capacity not on detachableness
SeriousGoofball@reddit
I don't think it's weight. It's size. With a magazine fed weapon, you have to have a place to put the magazine. With this design, you can eliminate the redundant material.
Snider83@reddit

Oh, shit.
JimMarch@reddit
This...isn't crazy.
Most 5.7 pistols have huge grips. This should be the smallest 5.7 grip ever (that still holds ammo inside).
Is 20 rounds total enough for daily carry? No reloads?
Ummmm...yeah, for most folks. Lots of people pack a J-frame with no reloads, or a couple of speedloaders max. And 5.7 can throw down more hurt than 38+p.
MrPBH@reddit
This is a very clever way to get around once intrinsic limitation of 5.7 handguns.

TacTurtle@reddit
MSRP on the P15 is $460 and they sell retail for about $280. MSRP on the PR57 is $399 so a similar MSRP:Retail ratio would put street prices at about $245-250... pretty close to 250 or so of the higher end 5.7 rounds at $.90-$1 a round
IamJewbaca@reddit
5.7 isn’t even that expensive anymore. Can find some for just over $.50 / round

Gun grabbers - ban magazine fed guns.
Kel Tec - makes magazineless pistol with 20 rounds.
Grabbers - hey, not like that!
-GearZen-@reddit
Also - does this get around 10 round mag capacity limits in commie states?
TomCollins1111@reddit
Really depends on the text of your states ban. Here is the Maryland statute text.
“A person may not manufacture, sell, offer for sale, purchase, receive, or transfer a detachable magazine that has a capacity of more than 10 rounds of ammunition for a firearm.”
So IANAL, but this seems like it would be kosher in MD. In NY and CA, your mileage may vary.
Klicky1@reddit
How does this work, if you were to make a purchase in different state, are you not allowed to bring it to Maryland then?
Europoor
TomCollins1111@reddit
You can’t transfer within the state, but there is no law against possession, so you CAN buy one in a neighboring state and take it home.
Klicky1@reddit
You know… I am not even in US and these regulations that crap on 2nd amendment make me mad xD
TomCollins1111@reddit
Yes. And here I thought justice delayed was justice denied.
Frustrated_Consumer@reddit
Yep, totally legal in Maryland. That’s how people do it. Totally nonsensical, but the police enforce it.
-GearZen-@reddit
You always need to peel the onion.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
No. It still has a magazine in excess of 10 rounds. Even if the magazine is not detachable.
-GearZen-@reddit
From 1994 to 2004, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was in force. The federal law defined a “large-capacity ammunition-feeding device” as a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. It made any handguns with large-capacity magazines not lawfully possessed before the law’s enactment illegal.
By that definition this gun does not have an ammo feeding "device" as long as you load without the stripper clip.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Yes it does. It has a magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds.
Not all magazines are detachable. For example the M1 Garand has an 8 round magazine that holds En Bloc clips
its-butter@reddit
The garand is 7+1 capacity. 8 round clip loads top round with 7 in the internal mag. That’s what the old timer at the range corrected me with when I said 8.
Internal mag greater than 10 makes it a no go in many banned states. At least in CT it does.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
IIRC you can hold down the rounds and close on an empty chamber with 8 in the magazine. No real reason to ever do that of course.
its-butter@reddit
I’d have to check again to be sure. I could be unknowingly spreading fuddlore lol
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Either way the point is a fixed internal magazine is still a magazine. So these pistols would not be allowed in ban states.
its-butter@reddit
Maybe Keltec will have a 10 round model. Seems stupid to have a fixed magazine but not have one available for all the states that have detachable mag feature bans.
Needs a threaded barrel option, though
TargetOfPerpetuity@reddit
They're going back to their roots. Kel-Tec's very first pistols were fed with stripper clips and didn't have detachable magazines.
255001434@reddit
Internal magazines are affected by mag bans.
For example, shotgun mag tubes are limited to 10 rounds in a ban state. The Kel-Tec KSG, which holds 7 rounds per tube was allowed for sale in CA because you have to manually switch from one tube to the next, so they consider it to be two separate magazines. If it had automatically switched between tubes, it would have been treated as one 14 round mag and they would have had to limit it somehow.
-GearZen-@reddit
Imagine being murdered because the criminal didn't follow the law so you ran out of ammo first. It's just mind blowing.
255001434@reddit
Yes, and we have seen videos where it took more than 10 rounds fired to stop an attack. There was one where a cop shot a guy with a knife multiple times and the guy didn't drop until the 11th round.
antariusz@reddit
when California temporarily lifted their magazine restrictions, it was due to the judge agreeing that in at least a few specific instances, the good guy ran out of bullets before the bad guys did... (woman with a revolver locked in the bathroom while someone broke into her house was one of them)
SmoothSlavperator@reddit
Most state mag limits are based on the '94 fed AWB. They included the word "detachable" so that it wouldn't catch things like tube fed pistol cal guns and tube fed 22s that are usually over 10rds.
I think its only NY that encompasses nondetachable mags.
oddular@reddit
Vermont simply says “devices” in its capacity limits so this would fall under that statute.
Self_Correcting_Code@reddit
No mag, no mag limit. Big brain meme.
ocarina_vendor@reddit
IANAL, but I don't see how it could be held to a magazine limit without a magazine.
Then again, integrally suppressed firearms didn't get any easier to buy just because they built the suppressor into it, so who knows?
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Because it has a magazine. It's just not detachable.
Icy_Ferret_7992@reddit
According to Kel-tec it does not have a magazine
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Ok, they're wrong.
It has an integral magazine.
YoloSwaggins991@reddit
It has a magazine, it’s just not detachable.
ocarina_vendor@reddit
Understood.
But, don't the anti-2A folks writing gun laws usually specify a detachable magazine when trying to limit capacity? I'm wondering if this gets around that, or if it will just prompt them to omit the word "detachable" in the future?
ThePenultimateNinja@reddit
The word 'detachable' is usually used in the context of AWBs rather than magazine capacity bans. A detachable magazine is usually one of the features that defines whether a rifle is an 'assault weapon'.
That's probably where you're remembering it from, especially as both types of ban tend to be introduced simultaneously.
ocarina_vendor@reddit
Thank you for clarifying. I appreciate it.
bren97122@reddit
Definitely not in New York State. We have a hard limit of 10 rounds in a magazine, the only exception I believe is with fixed tubular magazine .22 caliber rifles.
TacTurtle@reddit
I wonder if a spiral tubular mag like a Lebel would count in a 5.7....technically is a .22 caliber with tube mag..
YoloSwaggins991@reddit
Usually not. Fixed mag semi autos in excess of 10 rounds are usually expressly banned in these AWB’s. The definition of “high capacity magazine” is sometimes a separate law depending on the state and may apply to just semi autos or across the board.
Melkor7410@reddit
It would depend entirely on the wording of their laws. If they specifically say banning something that takes detachable magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds, probably gets around it. If it just says capable of accepting more than 10 rounds, then no. YMMV.
Not2TopNotch@reddit
I believe there are a few that specify "ammunition feeding devices" because people were arguing belt fed isn't a magazine.
usedkleenx@reddit
It stI'll has a magazine, it's just not a "detachable magazine. " it's probably considered a box magazine now.

neruphuyt@reddit
Rotary locking barrel though so it would be really difficult to keep anything threaded onto the muzzle. Keltec usually threads everything but this isn't threaded and that's probably why.
Galactic_Obama_@reddit
Keltec either needs to lay off the crack or do more of it. I'm not sure which.

IMMRTLWRX@reddit
im a keltec apologist. p50, ksg, p17, etc. there's a lot of hype in this thread.
but that barrel length looks suspicious. genuinely suspicious. current production length 5.7 pistols have already pushed the limit for acceptable velocity in the lengths avaliable. 5.7 is useless without that, and im one of the biggest 5.7 fanboys there is.
all of this is before you even get into delay systems and effective burn time, which we've seen nothing about here or on other posts.
PSA recently released their "compact" rock 5.7 offering and there's a good reason the only thing compact was the grip. there's literally no more barrel to cut. this is the make or break that could actually turn it into expensive 22 mag, like naysayers love to parrot. 5.7 lives and dies by its velocity. the same way 5.56 does.
we'll see. ill be buying one out of silly principle. ill be carrying my m&p on magazine principle and thinness. and ill continue to recommend the rock 5.7 to most based on cost to performance. the 5.7 handgun meta would appear to remain the same with this. :/

I like how kel-tec likes stacking weird concepts on top of each other. I'd carry one as a backup, or for when additional magazines may not be viable (as in I don't want to carry mag carriers or have a lot of pockets in a given outfit). It was sooner rather than later that I'd expand to 5.7x28mm.
In particular, which restrictive states is this handgun designed to be a loophole for?
harpnyarp@reddit
This is actually incredibly innovative - just last week I was speculating that there's room for development in the world of 5.7 concealed carry options, and keltec comes along and offers something genuinely revolutionary.

And, my 1st and LAST experience w/KelTec waza SU-16CA, that they kicked out tha door, sans EXTRACTOR. Not sure what they're doin NOW, but, CLEARLY, they did not test fire that gun, which is pretty UNFORGIVABLE!
JoeHardway@reddit
Bahaha! 4 d-votes! "I never knew how totally UNNECESSARY extractors were, till I got'a KelTec!" 🤣
thrwaway75132@reddit
In 2003 I had to sandpaper the chamber of my P9 to get it to extract. Hopefully they are better at quality now than then.
Durin1987_12_30@reddit
Never change, Keltec. Never stop being weird.
Foremole_of_redwall@reddit
KelTec told the world that guns should fold. And the world listened. Now they are making detachable magazines go away. What states will this be legal in that large capacity mags currently aren’t in?
What comes next you Wizards of Florida space magic? What innovations will you bring us poor undeserving souls? I wait with open wallet and baited breathe, oh wise and powerful KelTec social media intern.
Begle1@reddit
This would be legal in Hawaii, which currently bans detachable magazines over ten rounds that can be used with a firearm with a barrel under 16 inches that is not an "assault pistol".
UpstairsSurround3438@reddit
Goverment - No detachable magazines
Keltec - Hold my ~~beer~~ coke
Beebjank@reddit
Such an interesting concept unfortunately made by Kel Tec.
tbrand009@reddit
I feel like Keltec was sitting on this for a little while, just waiting for something like Colorado's new proposed law to come up.
Driven2b@reddit
Interesting
LiberalLamps@reddit
Never change Keltec, never change.
WhiskeyOverIce@reddit
Welcome back, C96!
TheSkyFlier@reddit
Does it have a bullet fountain button?
Jumpy-Carbuyer@reddit
Does it look like it can eject rounds without racking the slide like a steyr m1912?
TaskForceD00mer@reddit
I really wish Illinois had an exception for fixed mag pistols right now :-\
This just seems COOL.
AncientPublic6329@reddit
So it’s a gun designed for the casual gun owner that’s completely unique to all other guns on the market? You would think the casual gun owner would want something popular to make accessories, spare parts, and assistance from others easier to find
PsychologicalHat1480@reddit
The casual gun owner isn't modding or shooting so much it breaks from wear. They're less concerned about all that stuff than serious shooters are.
AncientPublic6329@reddit
On a regular gun, yes, but this is a Kel Tec, so parts are going to break much easier
dealin_despair@reddit
How many Kel-Tecs have you actually owned?
Deeschuck@reddit
Nah, they want to buy it, shoot it a few times, and then not have to mess with it. Casual gun owners aren't the ones driving the burgeoning aftermarket parts industry.
DBDude@reddit
Way to get around the standard size mag bans.
nickm95@reddit
Dual guide rods with a rotary barrel? Sounds like a pain to field strip
terrrastar@reddit
There is no mfin way💀
Kromulent@reddit
Looks like a good option for people who live in states that limit mags to 10 rounds (at least until they change the law again).
I can't imagine any advantage otherwise.
LegendActual@reddit
Just when you think KelTec has mad the dumbest piece of shit on the market, in comes KelTec with the new dumbest piece of shit on the market.
Lord_Larper@reddit
The crack pipe of pistols. Great like I need another one (I’m going to buy this)
Zesty-Lem0n@reddit
Now I can live out my RE4 fantasies of doing the stripper clip reload lol.
bowtie_k@reddit
My buddy sent me a pic of this and I thought it was some oddball Kyber pass one off... not a new production firearm lmao
Sgonfia_bici@reddit
So cool, I Hope It arrives here in Italy as well.
What an interesting idea.
Sgonfia_bici@reddit
This is Genius.

Icy-Blackberry-3464@reddit
Speed loading might be a challenge
Icy-Blackberry-3464@reddit
And at $0.55-0.60 per round for range ammo, not an inexpensive option
ChampagnePlumper@reddit
I never thought I’d own a keltec or a 5.7 but here I am looking into how to preorder this monstrosity
CheeseMints@reddit
At :26 it looks like the story is boyfriend takes girlfriend camping, shows her how to load new pistol then she bushwhacks him while down range like Chris Kyle
:o
CNCTank@reddit
Ah yes Keltec...the Florida man of guns
N0V-A42@reddit
That is neat.
