Not offended but sad. We are going through ruff times and we always ALWAYS trying to match the USA. We are a poor country with corrupted government and our people are like foxes. They only gossip and wish to see their neighbors suffer. We sold ourselves to tourism and we became the waiters of Europe. We could have been so great but we are stuck in the past. I hate this ! And I hate when they literally throw all of these into my face because I know my country and I hate it when it shows.

Why would you want to emulate the current USA? It has fallen considerably; it was arguably the best country in the world after the end of World War II, until about 15 years ago when its decline began.

Because we are idiots and we still believe in the American dream.
View on Reddit #45758253

Dizzy-Item-9175@reddit

But we're living the dream, we have EU regulations and don't have any fear walking alone into the night that some junkie would pull a gun on us for some easy meth money. Yeah, we may not live into the richest countries but we have a strict number of hours for monthly work, paid off days, paid maternity leave and free healthcare and our universities don't cost over 100k fking dollars. Do you know that saying that you should never meet your idols? Yeah.. USA is cool only if you have money, most of the USA citizens won't think twice to change places with us.

This is ignorant propaganda. The US is extremely diverse as is Europe. Someone living in Puerto Rico will have such a different experience from someone living in San Francisco or Alaska it's almost impossible to even generalize. Same for Norway versus Bulgaria versus Spain for example.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. For example, I don't get offended if a Bosnian dislikes Serbia, as there is a valid reason for them hating on us. I do get offended when a Croat vocalizes his disdain for Serbia. Like we are evil personified but Croatia is the Devil himself.

Ad a hungarian, i heard that Serbs have deep hatred for Hungary, and it was advised that do not visit the southern parts (S of Belgrade), because it is literally your death sentence if they figure out where you are from. (heard it in Subotica from hungarians living there) Of course, is sounded like an overexaggeration, and it came from only one group of mutuals, but reading that there is seemingly an even bigger beef with another country, i got a little jelaous. (jk lol) Anyway, in your experience, what is the usual opinion about hungarians in Serbia?

I am not that familiar with your situation, just heard some rumors and stuff about crazy corruption and underworld powers. (dont even have any idea which one to believe) Do you have any tip, where could i learn more about the shit going on on our south? In our case, if this dumbass loses the elections, it would take at least a decade (but probably multiple decades) to make a functioning country, but at least we would have EU support, which is pretty resourceful.
View on Reddit #45780756

Embarrassed_Lie6379@reddit

Yup, our whole society functions on corruption and underground powers. It's so deeply rooted into this place that the problem isn't the ruling party, it's the corrupt nature of people here. We're just so devoid of any external contact with other countries, especially non-Balkan to realize how deeply distraught our population is. Unfortunately, to undo that, it will take a revolution in blood, and generations of people with integrity leading this country and doing what is best for it, systematically destroying the root of corruption in our country. That means at least 100 years or more at best, and that time is something we simply don't have: Not even a third of that. Serbia is dead and rotting, it just doesn't know it yet. Like a leper succumbing to his rot, without feeling any pain.
View on Reddit #45788149

redditkacsa@reddit

Makes sense, and its really sad. I mean, people usually love their home, or at least are attached to it. Thinking of moving abroad if our shitshow continues after the next elections is the correct move, but heartbreaking, i would hope to move home asap. On the other hand, leaving your home knowing you will not be able to go back, if you want to maintain a decent lifestyle of your liking must be beyond fucking painful, man.

Romans had a massive taboo over genital mutilation, don't accuse the Roman Empire of such degenerate acts. They were so against it that even circumcision was a big no no. Nero was an anomaly, all historians agree on that. He did things that were monstrus to good civilised Roman society, it's not controversial. Yes, Rome had slaves, as did Greece. But they weren't treated like the Ottomans treated them. There is levels to cruelty.

View on Reddit #45721171

Monterenbas@reddit

I mean, Hitler did quote the Armenian genocide as a reference for his own genocide, and how one can get away with it. The exact quote was « who remember the Armenians today? » or something along that line.

Adolf Hitler’s reference to the Armenian Genocide is often cited from a speech he gave to Wehrmacht commanders on August 22, 1939, just days before the invasion of Poland. The passage, as documented in the Nuremberg Trials, reportedly reads: “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?” This statement was part of his argument to justify ruthless tactics during the war, suggesting that historical atrocities had faded from public memory, enabling impunity for new ones.

It says not every source included it but you're presenting it to me as an indisputable fact which is misleading

...Which is all mostly true ? DNA is heavily Anatolian Greek in the North and West, with more Arabic admixture the further south you go. Turkic remnants are negligible. The Armenian Genocide did, indeed, take place around the same moment when the bases were being laid for modern Turkey and its institutions. Hitler did take inspiration from the genocide. Those are facts, but stating them doesn't mean essentializing the Turkish people to just those or hating them.
View on Reddit #45730871

Kaamos_666@reddit

Couldn’t be more wrong. We have Turkic contribution much higher than Arabic ancestry which is quite isolated and marginal. We share more ancestry with Iranic folks instead; the Kurds at the top of the list.

And where's your proof genocides of Europe were inspired by Ottoman Turks? Damn I didn't know we were this powerful. This is like when they blame the Jews for everything going wrong in their lives and also think that they control the world
View on Reddit #45732501

WelpImTrapped@reddit

No one is saying that you share the blame for the Holocaust, except maybe for some braindead nationalists and other trolls from various Balkanic countries. Hitler took inspiration from it, but it's not like you actively lobbied him for exterminating the Jews and offered him your expertise on the matter. By the way what I meant before is, that it so happens that Erdogan and his party are the ones pushing (ultra-)nationalist rethorics, and that they don't mind twisting history for the purpose of 'writing the proverbial national roman' and painting an heroic picture with fantasized past. And his supporters are the ones pushing those views everywhere on the internet. So criticizing your governement also means bringing up the talking points you mentioned (agreed, it's obviously not always done constructively and repeated ad nauseam by trolls)
View on Reddit #45734508

desertedlamp4@reddit

Or maybe it's because Europeans can also commit atrocities on their own. It's that simple
View on Reddit #45756802

WelpImTrapped@reddit

Man it's like talking to a wall with you... Of course we did commit more than our fair share. That's not the point. The point is that Erdogan and ultranationalist Turks shouldn't fantasize about their past, rewrite history and gaslight themselves and others into believing into the overly glorious version. Turkey had its glorious moments, sure, and its dark passages, sometimes even concurrently. Just like any other country. But I am not taking the moral high ground ; I am French and (to a much lesser extent) some fantasized elements and twisted truths about our history, recent and old survive in the national subconscious even today, while other less glorious things are being diminished or suppressed.
View on Reddit #45757107

desertedlamp4@reddit

I am not talking about the ultranationalists. It was the Hitlerite claim
View on Reddit #45757238

WelpImTrapped@reddit

Again, talking to a wall. Okay, so I'll say it differently : the Hitlerite claim, while true, is not relevant in discussions about Turkey unlike the actual Armenian Genocide. It shouldn't be used against you. That a country 'leader', 25 years after the deed, independently took a look back and decided to inspire himself from it isn't Turkey's fault. Turkey isn't responsible for the Holocaust (although it wasn't [completely innocent either](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_and_the_Holocaust) . But then again my country France itself (although under duress) delivered about 30 times the amount mentioned here for Turkey.

Hi American with Cherokee citizenship here (also trying to get Italian citizenship) Most people love Turkish people, for the most part. A majority of turks I know are swell. I'm a Islamic revert, and I've been bullied by two turks before saying Americans can never be true Muslims... but there are bad people in every culture. So yes Turkish people are cool for the most part. Turkish history is incredible as well Atatürk was amazing. We even have small monuments to him in my state. But the Turkish government... well that we hate... they feel ambiguous when it comes to everything, even in issues that should be black and white. They also left the Istanbul Protocols (a woman's protection laws started by Atatürk) they banned any social media application that refused to give the Turkish government unrestricted spying capabilities om their citizens, the Turkish government is causing more tensions in syria (as is America. Like seriously let them live in peace) and we dislike strongman populace leaders. So yes I and most people I know love Turkish people, but we dispise Turkish government. As for your fellow Balkan, they dislike Turkish because of the historical Ottoman Empire, and seeing you all as kinda outsiders.

As a Serb who talked a lot with fellow Balkanians and East Europeans I can guarantee that our women are more free, but in a different sense or reasons, then Western. We have many women in industries which are considered to be men and I think it's similar in Albania. I heard similar stories coming from Turkey. Westerners told me that it could be due to economical advantages these positions offer. But I think that's also because our nations had many male loses so women were often "forced" to replace men.

Yeah you're right about Serbian names, I guess orthodox Christianity and being geographically close to Greece played a significant role in that? I do still stand behind the fact that many other Westerner's names come from the languages above. Also, Isn't Maša from Hebrew still? Altho not originally but if we follow the origins of it (Maria) it will come down to the fact that it's Jesus's mother's name, and that it was first used by Hebrew and Coptics people and then taken in by the Greeks? Thanks for the list I'll use it in my arguments on the future.

But aren't Serbs, in polls at least, the biggest supporters of Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, when compared to all the other nations in the Balkans?
View on Reddit #45786923

Late-Show245@reddit

That's true. Serbs were overwhelmingly in favor of Russia; that figure has now dropped, as it is not going as Serbs initially thought, plus propaganda from the government. But a majority is still in favor of Russia, though not as largely as three years ago. I am most triggered by foreigners who try to portray our government and all Serbs as Russophiles and their puppets. The truth is, if you look at the latest polls, the EU and Russia both have support above 50%, slightly higher for Russia. But as I mentioned, this was done intentionally by our government, which isn't really pro-EU nor Russophilic. All they really care about is money. At heart, most officials probably sympathize with Russia, but their pockets are in the West. So, there is no way they will turn against their personal shady interests and deals. As a pro-EU supporter, it saddens me to witness Ursula, Merkel... shaking hands, smiling happily, and being supportive of a government that is not only Russophilic at heart but also deeply anti-democratic. For them, the most important thing is that we send weapons to Ukraine, while government supporters have no clue about this due to a skewed media landscape where they are pictured as great patriots for not imposing sanctions on Russia. For the EU, geopolitics comes first, and values second. Germany also supports lithium mining, which could have horrible consequences not only for Serbia but also potentially for other neighboring countries. And the Kosovo issue as well... All of this is prioritized over the rule of law, freedom, and democracy. It sometimes feels like we are second-class Europeans. But this is also our fault. I may appear as Russia's useful idiot here, but I would never vote for nationalistic, chauvinistic and pro-Russian party because I believe in EU values and their better quality of life which we could at least partially achieve here only with their support and help. But making alliances with ex extremists, radicals, and tycoons is a risky game EU is playing here and I am not the biggest fond of it. Self-reflection and self-critique are important, but many in the Balkans unfortunately do not understand that. If we are to be better, we need to apply them instead of issuing labels to each other.

Yeah, this is pretty common on social media, in the political world, and in nationalist communities. But at the same time, I receive a lot of rational criticism and compliments from people in real life (I lived in Germany for a year). As you know, the media (TV, news, etc.) world is a perfect example of an echo chamber. And it's very likely that they believe such things without researching. They hear it from the government, and in schools, where objectivity is often lacking. So they just believe it, but it's understandable since the Turkish government is a perfect example of failure in defending Turkiye. I mean, how can you convince people just by saying "It's a lie" instead of presenting real evidence? At the same time, I think social media is a very bad platform for political discussions. People are so irrational and full of hate on these platforms. It's also understandable that these platforms cover just a tiny portion of the population. And these platforms unite people who think the same way. It's like hospitals. It's very rare to find people who are terminally ill, but if you go to a hospital, you can find plenty of them. So probably people don't hate us that much but on Reddit, Instagram there are plenty haters :D

This happens to me irl at school to, but mainly just from guys that have actual mental disorders, but it still gets very irritating. Also, where do they get that stealing thing from? A western city with a population of say 200000 will generally have higher crime rates than a comparable eastern european city.

First of all, dehumanization and bombings are two different points, you made it as one. Second of all, why is it hypocritical? Am I participating in attacks? No I am not.
