Where do you find out about community events or news?

I live in small French town and the only way that I know to find out about local events or news is through the community FB group. Many local businesses also only have FB pages. It's the only thing keeping me on FB, and I so desperately want to delete my account. I'm curious, if you are not on FB, how do you find out about local events?

Could Meetup be an option?

Both the commune and department likely have their own websites

That's true and there are some good tourist websites as well. The mairie also has a website, but it doesn't show local concerts, or 'exceptional closures' which are somewhat common here.

Same situation here in south of Spain. I had deleted my FB account and trying to figure out what to do would just frequently land me on the "Facebook is better signed in" prompt :P
In the end I created a FB profile with literally nothing else on it just for the sake of being able to see whats going on.
I really don't think theres any other option. Most of these business/events etc only post on Meta owned platforms. So unless you have someone relaying that info to another platform, its unlikely you're going to be able to leave it fully any time soon.

I hope FB is Blueskied, but until then, it does feel like the only option. I don't belong to enough local community groups yet to tap into their knowledge.

From locals themselves.
For example from other parents in local schools, from co workers, neighbors, from church goers, from adds on various bulletin boards, flyers.
