CPU overheating on first boot.

Having an issue where my 7800x3d overheats on first boot causing a crash on my new build. Pc works fine afterwards, is it possibly an issue with my aio (thermalright frozen notte) Thanks in advance

You sure you used enough thermal paste onto your CPU?
portugalfreak@reddit (OP)
Used an X shape with a dot in each of the holes between the lines of the x as recommend on here
Shrek_OC@reddit
This is more than enough paste. I'd look for the spread paste being thicker on one side, as this suggests uneven mounting pressure

Forgot to ask how would I go about heating up the paste to remove the cooler. Am I safe to boot it up later despite it auto shutting down to prevent damage so I can loosen up the thermal paste?

I don't know why I keep getting censored here, but just twist the cooler to break the surface tension of the thermal paste. You can't pull an AM5 CPU out of the socket anyway

Appreciate it! I will update later when everything is said and done. You have helped me out immensely

Yeah picking up a tube of paste later today and this one comes with a spatula where my old one didn’t. Should allow me to evenly spread it and hopefully fix the issue

Maybe your AIO is not sufficient to cool the CPU.
portugalfreak@reddit (OP)
Possibly, but it works perfectly fine after first boot and many others have this aio with this cpu so I’m not really sire

Worst case scenario is to reseat the AIO but this time, use a dot then evenly spread the thermal paste all over the surface of the CPU, then slip on the cooler header.

Sounds good. I’ll get some thermal paste and do this. Thanks

What's weird about your issue is that "it overheats at first boot", so the water is at its coldest point, but succeeds booting when the water gets a bit warmer.
To me that sounds like an improper contact which gets solved by material expansion due to heat. I'd reseat the CPU and the RAM and while you're on it: check if you forgot the foil on the heat spreader

I know for sure that I took the plastic off of the aio, but I’m going to get some thermal paste and try to do what you said as well as reseat the aio.

Reseat the CPU, not AIO

Ok, this is how it is currently oriented. https://imgur.com/a/bXEAZ6f

Are you able to turn the AIO heat spreader (the thing with contact to the CPU) by 180° for testing purposes? Currently there's a chance that air bubbles are getting trapped in the pump

If you want to be 100% sure take a hair dryer

The Frozen Notte uses an inline pump located near the inlet/outlet of the radiator. I doubt the orientation of the CPU block will have any influence on the pump. I was concerned the pump could have been trapping air if it was front-mounted, but it's top mounted so that won't be an issue.
L1ghtbird@reddit
Normally it should not have any impact, that's why I said for testing purposes since I had such a situation once. I was searching for hours for the cause
portugalfreak@reddit (OP)
Possibly? I’m not 100% sure but I will check later when home from work. Just gotta pickup new paste on the way home
Shrek_OC@reddit
How do you know it's overheating? Also, have you tried setting the pump to a fixed speed in the BIOS?
portugalfreak@reddit (OP)
Because the second I open the pc the first time for the day I opened a program to monitor the temps. CPU temp steadily rises to about 105 or a bit higher than the pc crashes. Pump is plugged into the pump header on my mobo so it should be at a fixed speed already, no?
Shrek_OC@reddit
is your AIO front mounted?
portugalfreak@reddit (OP)
Top mounted. Below is my orientation https://imgur.com/a/bXEAZ6f
Shrek_OC@reddit
that looks good to me

Yeah I’m gonna re apply thermal paste later. Someone suggested to turn the air 180° so might try that as well. At least I have narrowed it down as for the past few days I was clueless
