PCIe is backwards and forwards compatible. It'll work fine, but you'll run it at 4.0 speeds. Unless you're doing something that strictly involves sequential read and write, you won't be able to tell a difference because they're won't be a difference. Current 5.0 SSDs only reach 5.0 speeds with sequential operations, and most transfers are random instead of sequential.

By PCIE 4 speeds, is it possible that the PCIE 5 drive will run on par with the 990 Pro if placed in a PCIE 4 slot, provided the PCIE 5 drive's advertised read and write speeds are higher than the 990 Pro (even if the PCIE 5 drive is placed in a PCIE4 slot)?

With sequential transfers, yeah, it'll run at 4.0 speeds. But with random transfers, it'll still be slower.
