I have a theory that we're all more "haha" than "lol". True?

Can't get behind either of them any more.
People in chat situations will put lol in the most random ass spots for seeming no reason.
"today i went to the store lol they had no milk"
What is up with this?
Even our generation abused it, but I think it has become worse. Same with haha.
No, I'll stick to the old textual emote. You rarely see them any more, but I think I rather look like an old school internet nerd, than an illiterate 12 year old, that uses lol as a filler for nothing that was said that was funny.
-Disagreeable-@reddit
Lol is a lie. It’s always been a lie. If you type it, you’re a liar.

sundayfunday78@reddit
Me too lol
Zilhaga@reddit
Yup. I used to be a "heh," but I've grown with the times and now practically use "lol" as punctuation lol.
mytextgoeshere@reddit
I was once a “haha” but my younger coworker converted me to an “lol.” I like tacking on lol to an end of a sentence, almost like punctuation.
BillG2330@reddit
"Haha" = I acknowledge the humorous intent your statement.
"Hahaha" = I LOL'ed.
"HAHAHAHAHAHSHSHSHDJDJSJEJRJDJAHAHAHAHA" = I had a genuine reaction of uncontrollable or near-uncontrollable laughter.
throwawayzies1234567@reddit
For real, I never LOL, I feel like a teenage girl. Which is funny because LOL didn’t exist when I was a teenage girl.

QuokkaSoul@reddit
This is correct. Except that I don't add any other random letters because they don't sound like my laugh. I just use a long string of Hahahahahaha! Capital letters when it is deserving.
Lost-Wanderer-405@reddit
Because it was faster in old school texting. When you have to use number keys for texting. You use the words that type out faster. Ha ha is 442 442 lol is 555 666 555

My first text plan was pay per text. I wrote very long detailed texts. And I even remember a brief time when you could log in to ATT and send texts free from their website to other ATT users. I did that a lot to cut down on my count.
gordoshum@reddit
I remember having the pay per text plan & the first friend to get unlimited texting thought it was hilarious to send multiple nonsense texts to rack up my bill.
Also, I rarely lol, but I've been haha-ing since I first discovered digital messaging (AOL chatrooms were my first).
seiggy@reddit
Huh, interesting. I’m more in the lol camp, but mainly because I spent my formative years on IRC. And I didn’t use T9 texting nearly as much. You might be onto something there.

adlittle@reddit
By "haha" do you specifically mean the Nelson Muntz laugh? Or just laughing in general?

Definite "haha" here. I might use "LOL" if I actually laughed out loud. If not, it seems a bit disingenuous.

I used to be mostly "haha" and still am to a certain extent, but I notice more and more "lol's" creeping in, usually if I'm being sarcastic or the general point is idiotic. Haha is reserved for more genuine laughter.

flamingknifepenis@reddit
Very much so. The only times I text “lol” are when I’m actually saying “lol” in a self-referential / ironic way.
GelflingMama@reddit
I was haha for a loooong time and had to kinda train myself into lol so I didn’t feel like I looked weird. Still have the occasional haha slip through though. 😂 This little emoji here saves me the trouble, and yes, I overuse it.

Purple4199@reddit
Same here. I refuse to use lol, and I don’t even have a good reason for why. I also never use “ur” or “u” for you. I pretty much type out all the words, include punctuation, and capitalization in all my texts.
Aggravating_Yam2501@reddit
Sometimes I find myself doing both.
"Hahaha omg that was amazing Lol"
Which I feel like is the most Xennial, in-between-generations, thing to do so I'm keeping it. Despite what my teen says about how I'm "so stupid and cringe."
But she also says "HELP" when she means "Haha" so who trusts her anyway
DaoFerret@reddit
I think we’re more ROFL
StatementLazy1797@reddit
I had a friend who would say rofl outloud in conversation. Pronounced raw-full. If we were together and I said something mildly amusing, she’d say “oh my god, raw-full”. It pissed me off so much because I was right there with her and knew for a fact she was not rolling on the floor, or even laughing.
dezmd@reddit
"rah-ful" not so much "raw-ful" unless yall're real country bout it.... I mean, this isn't gif after all.
deowolf@reddit
I used to work with guys who actually said "raw-full-copter" out loud. As adults. In the military.
QuokkaSoul@reddit
It's pronounced "row-ful" in my head. I would never say it outloud!
But I did know a few millennials who said, "lol" (pronounced lōl (rhymes with Joel)) out loud. I'd probably say it more like "lawl" if I were to ever embarrass myself by doing that.
jambr380@reddit
I remember rotflmao was common back in the day. I never took the plunge because I never thought things were that funny
Nem-x13@reddit

LOLGANG
Annhl8rX@reddit
I’m a “Ha!” Hind of guy. I’ve got no time for that second “ha”.
The only time I’ve typed the L one was in my very early internet chat room days. The first time I saw it I asked the person what it meant. I somehow immediately knew it wasn’t for me, and haven’t used it since.
dezmd@reddit
ROFLMAO no.
spanky_macdoogle@reddit
100%. I’m not a lol person
Lasod_Z@reddit
I was typing lol in mmos before texting was a thing. In person i either harumph or guffaw.
Cast2828@reddit
Just one ha, as if I've thrown my head back, done it, then look back at you deadpan and make you question whether that just happened.
a-fabulous-sandwich@reddit
I've never used "haha" in any context, it just feels super unnatural to me. It's always been lol, lmao, or "roffle" (aka rofl) for me.
wheres_the_revolt@reddit
I’m definitely more of an lol than a haha, but it’s like 60/40 so almost an even split.
Remy0507@reddit
Well now you've got me actually thinking about my texting patterns. I tend to end a lot of my own texts with "lol" if I'm saying something meant to be whimsical/lighthearted/mildly amusing. If I'm reacting to something funny someone else said, these days it's usually going to be a laugh emoji rather than anything typed out.
Back when everything was purely text based communication though, I was more of an "LOL" guy than "haha". But this had more to do with internet messaging apps and chatting in newsgroups and such. Phone texting didn't come along until some time later.
ForcifyJames@reddit
For sure!
OPs_Real_Father@reddit
I’ve been a haha since MySpace/Facebook took everyone away from yahoo chat and ICQ. In those days I was a solid LMAO personal
QuokkaSoul@reddit
I loved ICQ.

i haha when i'm genuinely laughing and i use lol when i'm being sarcastic. most of my lols are accompanied by an eyeroll.😁
lsp2005@reddit
That is how I use the words as well.
Opening_Success@reddit
Yes. My haha us always used as an actual laugh. I mostly use LOL on reddit responding to someone who says something so dumb that it's mocking them.
I liken it to Dwight texting Jim LOL after destroying him in the snowball fight in The Office.

Dumphdumph@reddit
I don’t know if I’ve ever lol’d in my life. Only started using emoji’s the last year or so
jambr380@reddit
That is actually hilarious. I struggle with the decision often. Maybe I should just screw it and embrace the haha
dark4181@reddit
It’s context dependent, but mostly I come down on the side of haha.
Seven22am@reddit
I’ve always been “hahaaa”, but the utility of lol has been working on me.
nin4nin@reddit
We had AOL in high school. It was the OG LOL moment
oflimiteduse@reddit
Heh
cheltsie@reddit
I code switch when it comes to haha vs lol or an image or a gif. Different groups and situations definitely have different connotations for using them.
But deep down I favor the typed out smilies the most. :) =) =D !!
jachildress25@reddit
I only use haha, but not because I oppose lol. It’s just what I use.
Lanky-Owl6622@reddit
