Saturday Night in the Summer of Your Senior Year in High School, Whatcha Doing?

Follow me 40 years back through the mists of time, for me it would have been, scrape together enough gas money to hit my Podunk town's main drag with my 1968 El Camino (big block's gotta eat) and extra $10 for beer for the field party later. I hear my buddy John is finally going to fight that football player from the Catholic high school across town and his brother James is back from collage at the U.W. Madison and he's brought a bag of Kalkaska purple he got from his dealer. Someone would bleed, lifelong friends and enemies would be made, hearts would be broken, and our entire world would condense down to 40 acres, a bonfire, a keg, a little physical debate, some Two-Lane Blacktop reenactments and everything was right in a way that none of us even noticed, and life was easy for the last few warm summer nights. Next summer would bring jobs, recruitments, pregnancies and shotgun weddings, some of us live forever in that summer as bright flames destined to flare brilliantly and wink out, have their fire slowly extinguished by pain and disease or crushed by mental pain too heavy to carry and none of us even noticed that we were the last.....

Worked at the grocery store all year long during HS. My friends and I would cruise around town and drink all night. We would beat up skaters and vandalize cars and buildings for fun. We were smart. We wore our work clothes. Slacks and a tie. Any cop who bothered us would ask if we got off work. We would go to the strip clubs in the hood in Phoenix. They knew we were underage but did not serve us liquor. I had an older lady late 40s work with me. She asked for rides to her section 8 apartment. I would have sex with her and she would buy me beer.

What should have been a carefree summer for me was kind of a nightmare. My dad had an epic breakdown, mom and younger brother left, I had to take care of my dad until I went off to college. Had to find us an apartment (at 18, not exactly easy). Worked a shitty job. It was like I was living in a Jim Jarmusch film.

Cruising our strip hanging out with my group. Then there was the occasional stoplight drag. Everyone liked to pick on my Mustang II - until they lost the race....

Look - someone downvoted me! I must've beaten you back in the day, huh?? Lol

Shoehorned a 428 cj from a mercury xr-7 marauder in a bud's mustang 2 with a 9 inch from an early bronco, she'd lift the front tires through 1st and 2nd.

No small feat! Tried to have a 351W installed to replace the original 302. When the shop couldn't handle that, we found a 302 from a 68 Cougar and used it. Hence why a lot of people were surprised.... I still use that short block in my II, but it's a lot different than it was in 1989.

1991, living in the hood. Almost 34 years later I realized I should have joined the Army. Or something.
Life would have been so different.

Yes, 40 acres, a bonfire, keg, (whiskey) weed and seriously life long friends. I still speak daily to 3 of my girlfriends that I met in the 7th grade, and mannnn did us three have a awesome time every summer from the day we met on.
We also had our boyfriends, mine was the stick who didn't want me to hang out with the girls, didn't want me to drink ect. I was that asshole girlfriend that always was "tired" every Friday and Saturday night and I would tell him I was going to bed to get him to leave...... 30 mins later the girls where there and off we would go to do all the summer nights stuff.
I would not trade any of it for a second.

Cruising up and down the strip wasting gas that I can't afford to replace.

Summer? I was working. I picked up a job at the local dive shop after getting certified. Did pool cleaning, tank filling and helped out in the pool and during open water lessons. Went back and forth to the Caymans - unpaid. But I dove and worked all day and the hotel was free. Probably the greatest summer ever and I only knew it about 50%. It’s not until later when you look back and you realize how many amazing things happened to you but you were so deep in the work or drama or money or whatever is is, that you never fully appreciate things. I’m working on that now and have been for about a decade.

I’m working the line for dinner service at a stay away camp nearly 100miles from home; I’m slightly buzzed from the 40oz I chugged on an empty stomach before service and thinking about the lobsters in the walk-in that I’ll cook later, a weekly courtesy from Josh the Lobsterman cuz I helped fix his truck.

Pretty close except I grew up in a more urban environment. Less 40 acre fields and more strip mall parking lots.

Did you get Aerosmith tickets? It's the priority of the summer, ya now.

Hey, man, Pickford's got a doober ready to burn. You in?

Stuck at home for the summer with my mom in her apartment. Listening to her talk about how satanic and unladylike the latest pop stars are. PLanning to tell her i'm too sick for church tomorrow.
Pining to return to the magnet school 6 hours away where I live for the semester and can be myself without her knowing. She doesn't know I've already had sex or anything. She has no idea I will be buying a car with my job savings as soon as I turn 18 and leaving to go live at my magnet school graduate boyfriend's house the summer after graduation.

Yeah I was the nerdy girl who didn't even know there were senior parties till people talked about them years later

Working. I waited tables at the local truck stop from 2pm-10pm most nights.

Saturday night were great! Start by cracking a few California Coolers, then we hit a neighborhood and “scavenger hunt” for bread, toilet paper, rice, etc, party some more before sneaking more coolers into midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Man if I could timewarp to back then for another show with my HS buds…

This is the second time in 24 hours I’ve seen the word bogan in here. I’ve never seen that word before yesterday.
Any_Pudding_1812@reddit
nice. Bogans used to call themselves Bogs. in the small town I grew up in there was my all time favourite graffiti. “BOGS RULE! AYE!”

Head down to “The Pit” at Benbrook lake for a bonfire with kids from a bunch of other schools. That, or something church youth group related

Cruise the main drag and pick up some buddies and girls. Probably head to the nearest bigger town and just walk through the night air talking about dreams and futures - some that would come true, some that never would. Sit in the quad (it was a college town) and smoke and listen to music. (Probably a mix of punk, goth and a little new wave.). Maybe hit up a midnight showing of Rocky Horror. Probably end up at one of the friends houses and crash there and get ready for Sunday - study and work time.
