I’ve driven faster in my car than the c152 I cruise in with a strong tailwind. Lawnmower with wings
SashaGreyjoy-@reddit
210 mph, head down, no aircraft.
Cats155@reddit
Now that is some speed.
SashaGreyjoy-@reddit
It's about 120 mph slower than the world record lol
Background-Cricket-@reddit
I thought the world record was like 800+ mph when that guy jumped from that balloon like 15 years ago
BUTTER_MY_NONOHOLE@reddit
Alan Eustace. Nice to see it being mentioned. It was only just over 10 years ago ;)
SnowDin556@reddit
Terminal velocity
Cats155@reddit
That seems hard to believe but I know better than to doubt human ability.
scubasky@reddit
I see your 210 and raise you 254. Recorded by by Neptune on my wrist and my vigil AAD.
RobotnikOne@reddit
311kmh on both wheels 250ish on one(wasn’t so focused on the speedo oddly)
SpillinThaTea@reddit
677 across the ground. Newark to Munich going through the remnants of a hurricane. Didn’t sleep a wink but in typical MUC fashion the plane was able to pull right into a gate instead of waiting.
Battery4471@reddit
Wait it's common to wait at other airports? Never experienced that (as a passenger) but I don't fly that much
BUTTER_MY_NONOHOLE@reddit
Yes, especially when you catch a great tailwind and show up early
Sea2Chi@reddit
I landed 20 minutes early a couple weeks ago at O'Hare. We ended up sitting on the ramp for 20 minutes waiting for the gate to clear.
I mean, I got to use my phone which was nice, but it takes some of the joy out of getting there early when you still get off the plane at the same time.
durallymax@reddit
The ORD penalty box sucks. Get in early on an RJ? Penalty box. Get in late on an RJ? Penalty box.
Battery4471@reddit
Wow...
And Burning loads of fuel for nothing
EvelcyclopS@reddit
Some airports are horrific for it. Heathrow comes to mind first.
pebbletimevoice@reddit
Oh I’d say that’s because of T5 and British Airways’ shitty ground handling. Doha is even worse, you taxi and get off at a stand that is miles away from the terminal, you wait 15+m plus for the buses to arrive, then deboard, then the buses drive extremely slowly because they are stuck behind a slower vehicle resulting in a 10+m drive, then you can’t get off the bus yet because there are only 2 doors and there are 3 buses in front of you, and when you finally step foot into the terminal if you are transiting you need to go through security. I hate Doha with a passion.
EvelcyclopS@reddit
It’s because there isn’t enough runway capacity. Nothing to do with BA
Axe_Care_By_Eugene@reddit
CDG dit bonjour
teastain@reddit
AirTransat parks out on the ramp at 3, beside the Concorde!!!
EvelcyclopS@reddit
I was thinking this too
snonsig@reddit
Flying MUC LHR and back was certainly an interesting contrast
Battery4471@reddit
Well, England.
jello_sweaters@reddit
Toronto's not great, but you rarely wait very long.
cafe_brutale@reddit
True but at least with Heathrow you know what you're in for. The system they have is always the same and it handles extremely well at least in my experience. I'd rather have that than some other big airports where the intentions of the ATC can be quite a mystery.
EvelcyclopS@reddit
When I fly through Heathrow, I know I’m in for:
auxilary@reddit
i thought munich utilized the remote gates with busses for the passengers on US arriving flights?
SpillinThaTea@reddit
Maybe sometimes but none of the 4 times I’ve flow into Munich
rob_s_458@reddit
Who's done negative groundspeed? When the headwind is greater than your airspeed
acidreducer@reddit
Technically you can’t go negative, cause you’re still moving over the ground. But I have gone backwards!
cafe_brutale@reddit
Thank god I'm not the only one. It always irks me bad when people talk about negative ground speed. There is no such thing.
Iron_physik@reddit
There is depending on your frame of reference
cafe_brutale@reddit
Then you'd be talking about velocity. Understand that it is impossible to have negative ground speed in an aircraft. You're just moving in the other direction with the exact same POSITIVE ground speed.
unsuspicious_raven@reddit
Fair, but come on dude
acidreducer@reddit
But what I’m saying is the gps will never say -knots. Yeah I get the semantics but anyone who says they’ve seen - isn’t telling the truth.
_esci@reddit
its not semantics. in a plane you have a direction in which those speed should apply to get the effect of flying.
flying sidewards? you wont fly long? backwards? same? forward is the way to go. so its a indicator if you move in the right direction.
cafe_brutale@reddit
Yeah I know it's nitpicking.
turtle_excluder@reddit
If your ground speed is negative you'd have to be flying over a complex manifold... pretty bad navigation to end up there imo
fly72j@reddit
I’ve done negative 15kts ground speed in a C150, I went almost full throttle with 40° flaps to sit at near stall speed with a strong headwind lol
unsuspicious_raven@reddit
Man I miss flying that slow little bastard
fly72j@reddit
Yeah same, it was too much fun. Show as molasses, redline all the time, but the handling was like no other
unsuspicious_raven@reddit
Lot of memories doing all my XCs at just below redline squeaking along at 95 😂
fly72j@reddit
Haha sounds about right. Which variant did you fly? I got about 80 hours in that 150G.
unsuspicious_raven@reddit
It was a regular 152, I flew a '74(pretty sure) 150 a little bit, 40° of flaps is absolutely hilarious for that it just drops like a rock
fly72j@reddit
Nice nice. I wish the 172s had 40, it was so useful
My_useless_alt@reddit
At what point do you just find an airport and attempt a vertical landing for the fun of it?
fly72j@reddit
If it were safe I would have tried it. But I did that with around an estimated 50kt headwind at 7000MSL, the wind at my base airport was something like 15 gusting 25. Even if it was 50 on the ground for a vertical landing, it’s not worth the risk of the wind slowing suddenly and then wham you have no lift.
Pilot-Louy@reddit
I’ve done negative 30kts in a PA18-180 Banner Tow.
torsten_dev@reddit
Isn't that the dream when towing?
fightersweekly@reddit
No, because then you start to worry about making it back with fuel left 🤣
torsten_dev@reddit
Just land on an airport in the other direction.
blackteashirt@reddit
You're basically hot air ballooning at that point, did you chuck out some sand bags?
TheVoicesSpeakToMe@reddit
I’ve flown backwards in a helicopter, does that count?
mconrad382@reddit
I have a video of the G1000 and the ATC audio clip of me doing -3kts. Freaked out NY approach lol I think the quote was “are you guys ok? We show your ground speed as zero…”
slyskyflyby@reddit
Negative ground speed is not possible. I've flown backward but my ground speed was still positive.
unsuspicious_raven@reddit
I did -4 in a DA40 a couple months ago. We had a ridiculous, but steady wind at altitude so I put it into slow flight to see if I could do it and it sure did
ihedenius@reddit
K8 glider, windy day. Upwind of field advisable.
bacondesign@reddit
I did vertical landing in a glider. Feels awesome (except when you worry you'll reach the airport as you are close to your max speed already and it doesn't want to get any closer).
Yellowtelephone1@reddit
I did 16kn backwards at 46kn airspeed in a Grob 103 Glider
CaptValentine@reddit
-10 knots in a Seminole, -15 in an archer.
Seattle_gldr_rdr@reddit

ewerdna@reddit
I feel good about it, but how did your wallet feel?
RedneckMtnHermit@reddit
He paid before, so the wallet was super light.
mat101010@reddit
The going rate at the time was $10,000 USD per hour. That's a great bargain by today's standards as the fuel alone would be around $50k per hour. My ride less than official and I don't know what, if anything, was paid. Here is some Q and A on my flight from a while back.
r/flying/comments/swyz5c/what_are_the_highest_and_lowest_hourly_rates/hxpng6h/
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
That was fantastic. I appreciate (coming from someone who does the same) your context links sprinkled throughout.
mat101010@reddit
After the flight, I tried to find out more about the navigation system built into the MiG-25 -- It was designed as a high-speed interceptor, after all. While I was not fluent in Russian, it looked like a 1990s-era ATM head unit (yes, cash machine screen + 8 buttons) repurposed as an MFD. It had few of the functions I would consider mission critical. I don't think it even provided fuel quantity readouts. Wild.
I learned that the original flight computer was something like you'd see in Apollo rocket movies. A clunky E-6B computer that has access to system errors and position. There are quotes from early MiG-25 pilots saying 'Your life expectancy drops from 70 years to 70 minutes every time you take off. You won't live long if you get lost while flying 50 kilometers every minute.'

663 tonight while descending through FL340. We were only doing .01 Mach faster than our normal cruise speed, so not like we bumped it up to Mmo to get it.

JFK to Savannah. We we’re going executing what they called over the airways an “escape route where we fly at 650 knots at 8,000 ft til we got the plane behind the storm. gnartato@reddit
Yeah but when your aircraft is capable of doing the theoretical speed limit of the universe the only thing you can improve upon is the distance between you and your destination. Whether this refers to more efficient navigation or something like "worm holes" is up to your imagination, but the statement makes sense given light speed as a limiting factor.
NikkoJT@reddit
Star Wars spacecraft are absolutely not limited to lightspeed though. Obviously they're limited to "speed of plot" rather than a specific defined speed, but it must be faster than light (and by a lot) otherwise it would take years to travel between systems.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was a Virgin America flight 12 or so years ago. Coming from SEA, delayed an hour or so due to fog at SFO, original takeoff time late evening or so. They must have punched it with a tailwind, that A320 hit over 700mph ground speed on the flight tracker and we weren't too late arriving at the gate. I remember looking at the display and thinking it was a notably high ground speed. I've taken this flight a lot, they usually schedule it for 2 hours now, used to be 1:45, and average in air time is about 1:35 or so, but we made it from SEA to SFO in an hour and change, extremely fast for that route.

So I’m just here because I like to read things I don’t know about but I was on a flight from PHI to MCO that got delayed for 5 or so hours and I renewed the Captain telling us he was going to go as fast as the plane could handle and I don’t recall the speed but I do recall him shaving off a substantial amount of time we should have been in the air. I thought that was cool.

I got up to 210 knots ground speed in a serious one time with the right tailwinds.

741 mph ground speed because of a tremendous tailwind. It was great, until sudden severe turbulence that came out of nowhere, was an event for a minute or two, then we were back to smooth air.

How do you define speed?
With the right tailwind, we may see some unexpected airframes if it is groundspeed.
stuntin102@reddit
for these purposes it’s always groundspeed.
