I had a little Chevy s-10.
I really wish they still made little trucks like that. I’d love to have that Datsun or a Chevy Luv.
Of course, I live in MN now, so it would be a summer truck!
missionfbi@reddit
My dad had one!! It was silver with a diesel engine. It was soooo tiny at the pump next to the truckers. I learned to drive a manual on that truck and was taught about glow-plugs. We had to plug the heater engine to an extension cord in the winters.
Head-Major9768@reddit
Haha so tiny. I wish I still had one for fun.
missionfbi@reddit
It was fun! It had these little flip down seats in the back behind the driver and passenger seats where my brother and sister would sit. Driving around curves too fast would tip them out. No seat belts back then, of course.
Dick7Powell@reddit
I’m looking for something similar today or a 510 4 door. Too bad most of the 510s I’m seeing go for upwards of $30k now. But would love to have a beater Datsun pick up and those are also pricy.
Dense-Consequence-70@reddit
They don’t make small pickups like that anymore. I had a little Toyota pickup in the late 90s. Great inexpensive truck.
TreyRyan3@reddit
Mazda Ford Courier trucks were awesome. Ford tried to return to it with the Maverick. $21 for a light duty pick up was a good deal. Sold out for 6 months, and a $10K price increase after the initial demand.
minnesotawristwatch@reddit
Great choice. I also love the mid 60’s Toyotas.
JKSahara@reddit
Looks very similar to the one I had. 1976 Datsun 620.
Smash_Factor@reddit
That was my first ride also. 1977 long bed with the L20B. Weber carb, headers and a glasspack muffler made it a lot of fun.
Grand-Moose8294@reddit
I had this too! Light yellow with a hard cover over the truck bed with jalousie windows. No radio but it had a gun rack inside the cab where I hung a battery operated boombox WITH dual cassette players ! I was pimpin ha ha ha ha

Ugh, that was my dream car growing up! Loved that ride. I recently saw one exactly like the picture a couple weeks ago. My son asked me why I was gawking at it and said I was looking like a creep. I told him, “nostalgia my boy…”
LetsTryAnal_ogy@reddit
My parents had a 1985 Buick Grand National. Looked very similar to the Monte Carlos. You can see it in the background behind my car.
Afraid_Locksmith8642@reddit
Do they still have it?
LetsTryAnal_ogy@reddit
Sadly, no. It was stolen like 6 months after we bought it. The police found it in a parking lot weeks later, stripped to the frame. That broke my mom's heart.

B_Ho68@reddit
I bought it in 1984 when I was 15 for $475. It was only 12yrs old and already ragged out, pretty much.
Saw an ad in the paper and walked 7 blocks from my house to find it behind a laundry mat. Handed over my money then drove it home. 2 days later I was driving it to school without a license.
That pic is what it turned out to be in my senior year.

My first car that was on my own, not shared with my sisters, was a '79 Pontiac Grand Prix with a very similar design. This one's a beauty. I bought mine from a guy who had it stolen and recovered so the center console and the glove box had been crowbarred open, the steering column had a thick aluminum collar held together with four bolts. Every time I took it somewhere that somebody else got inside I definitely got the side eye.
IamGypsyStarr@reddit

I had a hand-me-down '77 Monte Carlo....in some kind of metallic, seafoam green (interior & exterior). Landau trim with the vinyl roof and an after market Lloyd's cassette player/radio. IIRC, it had a 305 small block V8 and rode like a boat. Huge coupe doors that must have been half the weight of the car and could cause seriously injury if you got in the way.

True story - my very first car was a 1970 dodge swinger, and the second time my wife ever had sex was in that car. Sounds pretty cool right - well truth be told my dad sold that car where he worked 45 miles away and three years before ever meeting my wife.
The swinger was pea soup green and was affectionately called “Godzilla” - we ran that bitch into anything and everything, all you had to do was beat the bumper back out with a maul hammer.
Moved to a 80’s concord that lost a battle against an oak tree - found out the hard way that hitting a tree at high speed can and will rip the engine out of the car.
After recovering from that I ended my HS career with a 1977 Datsun 280z - manual straight six engine and pulled and shaked really bad above 120mph.

'88 Pontiac Sunbird
SidewaysTugboat@reddit
My friends stole a gas cap off one of those when I lost mine. I had a LeMans. Damn thing didn’t connect to the tank, so I had to remember to put it back on every time, and when I lost it I didn’t bother to replace it. My friends were so proud when they came home from the university parking lot with their score. Poor kid is probably still thinks they did the same thing I did.
souvenirsuitcase@reddit
I remember the little LeMans! I always liked the rear design.
I put one of those locking deals on mine. It was a pain in the ass having to get a key every time I needed to fill up the tank. Especially since I worked at Chuck E Cheese and only put in a couple gallons at a time.
Sunbird ended up getting totaled by some idiot test driving an S10.
SidewaysTugboat@reddit
We used to joke that LeMans was French for lemon because mine was such a mess. It was a cute car, but I had nothing but problems with it and it was so low to the ground that it bottomed out constantly. It didn’t help that I was hugely irresponsible as a driver back then. I learned a lot about cars from driving that thing though. And it did have a cute rear. You were smart to lock your gas tank!

Cats-And-Brews@reddit
I much preferred the ‘73 rear tail lights and front bumper/grill. The ‘74 - ‘77 tail lights suffered the same design style choices as the ‘74 - ‘78 Mustang II. The gas crisis just castrated muscle cars - it was the beginning of the end until the late 80’s.

Oh shit my ex was a car enthusiast and a savant mechanic. He put an L-88 in his ‘62 Nova and made a cool little race car. I bought a ‘61 Impala that I loved, but it was my daily driver and I didn’t have $ to restore it like I wanted. We did put headers and a high rise on it though. Fun, fun times!

A green 1981 Honda Accord. A hand me down from my mom in the early 90s. That was her first brand new car. I drove this car so much I flipped the odometer. I had that car until 1995. The A/C stopped working, it had continuous issues with the alternator, and the transmission gave me issues. I loved that car, though.
MoosePenny@reddit
This was my mom’s first new car, same color and model-she insisted on AC. I finally got it senior year of college in 1989. It was fairly rusted out, but to this day, I have never driven a car that was as fantastic in the snow as the old ‘81 Honda Accord. I miss it!

My brother had a 71 Mach one and I lost the brakes coming down a mountain road that crosses a state highway. I happened to catch the light just right and flew over the intersection almost lost control and downshifted to a stop down the road a bit.
My to be wife was in the car and I didn’t tell her until she realized something was wrong haha. When the brake hits the floor and nothing happens it’s a bit scary but with that car is a freight train and noise from downshifting trying not to die on one of the deadliest highways…. Good times.

1976 BMW 2002. I joke that my first car was a BMW. That’s true, but in the late 80s it was not a status symbol at all—more of a quirky used car from 1976—-no working AC, Weber single-barrel carb, crank sunroof, manual 4 speed, and a dent in the passenger door. I saved up lawn mowing money and bought it from our neighbor for $3K.
My dad warned against buying it due to not being able to get parts, but he was otherwise ok with it and gave the go ahead. Turns out it was the most fun to drive car I’ve had-nostalgia or not. I drove it on some epic long haul roadtrips while I owned it. It was pretty much trouble free except for occasional carb adjustments/points etc.
I kept it through HS and most of college before selling it for $4K and thought I’d made bank. Fifteen minutes later I regretted it. Now those cars are going for $25K+ for decent non-restored examples. Woulda coulda shoulda.

There’s still a few manuals out there. I’ve been driving stick ever since my second car to the present. My last three have been VW golfs but VW is nixing manuals on the golf but still will have a manual in the Jetta GLI. Which is dumb if you ask me. When I got it in 1993, it had 48,000 miles on it. That's how much we DIDN'T drive it. It was a terrible car. Fun story: my dad needed a car a few years ago (2021?) and had a budget of like $1800. Boom - look what we found:
Like, who keeps a 1983 Ford Escort in good condition for all of these years? My dad had it for a few years, didn't take care of it, and sold it some guy who tinkers with cars. I freaking loved driving it (it wasn't 5speed tho). It was just as awful as I remembered it being...

That was the car my parents drove when I was a kid. My mom drove that, it was an ‘83 DL named Bessie, and my dad had an ‘86 Accord. Ours was “Maytag White” as my mom would say. It had a tan interior with those smelly sheepskin front seat covers. I can still smell that car. It stunk! I have no idea why my mom kept those seats covered. I eventually drove it in the mid 90’s for a hot second. For having such fat balloon ties, the turning radius on it was very impressive. What was cool though is my friend had a forest green colored one in high school. I remember my other friend’s family drove a yellow Volvo that was a little bit older and they had those awful fold-down seats in the trunk area where you face backwards. Her 3 little sister’s got the back seat because they were in car seats, so we were always stuck in the way back on twisty mountain roads. I would get so car back there.

It was 1996/97, and I was 15/16 yrs old. Got it with my boyfriend. I'd already been working on shitty cars with his dad a yr or two by then.
Ex and I were working on it all the time, it seemed.
The cotter key would always fall out of you didn't do whatever it was at the time, and you would start it, shift out of gear, the key would fall out and you had to get underneath to fix it. I couldn't work on it, eventually, the baby and belly was too big.
I told him the day I started labor, don't drop the cotter key when it's time to go to the hospital. We don't have time to fuck with it.
Of course he did, so he gets back in the car, after a couple of contractions it was fixed. But we had no speedometer, and the cops REALLY liked to pull us over.
It wasa half hour to the hospital. I kept asking, In between Lamaze breathing if we were going 55 yet. He would offer to go much faster, but I was not dealing with us getting pulled over again. Luckily we were not, and I did not have to give birth on the Plastic seats!

My dad bought a 78 AMC Concord from his aunt's estate in the early 1980s. Quite possibly the biggest piece of shit to ever come off an American assembly line. It looked extra weird because my great aunt had put in aftermarket air conditioning so it had these Brown 2-in ducts running under the dash. My dad had a very blue collar job only a mile away from our house and got very dirty everyday so he wanted something that he just absolutely didn't care about. But then it became the car that my sisters and I relied on when we got our licenses. In 1991, I failed my first crack at my driving test. When the trooper was going through honk your horn turn on the windshield wipers turn on your turn signals Safety check asked me to put on the emergency brake and then release it. When I pulled the release handle down by my left knee, the entire handle ripped out of the dashboard. He failed me for an unsafe vehicle. Also, my father once asked me to replace one of the headlights. It had some kind of hex screw holding it in that I just could not break loose. So I leaned with all my weight on the butt end of the screwdriver and the whole housing broke loose and drove into the engine compartment. I didn't know how I was going to explain that one to my father but he couldn't have cared less, he just packed it in place with a bunch of folded up cardboard. We called it the White Knight. Also we had thick cardboard on the driver side floor because the floorboard was rusted through and you could see the street passing underneath you. Final indignation was that one of the rear doors would not stay closed so it had to be tied to the opposing interior door handle. The only way you could ride around with friends in the backseat is if you untied the door to open it, then re-tied it once you were inside so that there was a rope running across the tops of your knees

I think the blue book was like $2500 but it needed brakes and looked like crap. He wouldn't believe that it wasn't a scam. He kept asking if it was stolen, or what the catch was. I stuck with the 289, but did put the Rally mags on it and swapped out the exhaust with Hooker headers. (Kept the burned out glass packs tho. Thing sounded badass). I also installed the obligatory Sparkomatic stereo system.

Oh man. I had some headers too, I don't recall if they were Hooker, but I do recall they were more specifically designed for this car because the engine bay had like really large-diameter shock towers. Anyways, I had to sacrifice my power steering to install the headers :D.

But I think since it was a first car for his teenage son he might have enjoyed the work? I regret not learning at his side, regardless.
I lost it in a head-on wreck that was not my fault, as the other driver made a left turn right in front of me and didn't look beforehand. The second car was a '77 Chevy Caprice 2-door that survived at least 2 long-distance drives to early anime conventions in Texas, carpooled with friends from Atlanta. We put a small block 305 in it over the weekend. It was an outrageous death machine. Way to much power and light in the back. No traction and no brakes. So much fun.
The fuel pump died so I had to put in an aftermarket one that pulled instead of pushed. When you got airlock you had to blow on the gas tank. Insane. Loved this car. Lost my virginity in this car. Grew up in this car. The engine blew the summer of my 18th birthday and I moved away.

Obviously not mine, but I drove one just like it. Dad bought it new in '72, and it was this exact color to match our Coachman travel trailer camper at the time. When he sold the Coachman and bought the Airstream, he had it repainted "Bass boat silver glitter". It was hideous! Dad sold the Airstream several years later and got a girlfriend and a 280Z. Mom did not approve. We kept the van. Mom drove it, both of my sisters drove it, and by the time I got old enough to drive it, the silver glitter had faded to battleship grey. I promptly ripped the two back rows of seats out, threw in some bean bag chairs and a "Spark-O-Matic" stereo cassette deck. Installed a bottle rocket launcher out of the little grills below the windshield. Lost my virginity in that old beast in the parking lot of a boat launching ramp.

Sedan. I used to lay above the back seat in the window all the time riding all around Chicago. I was 4 years old in the youngest so my older brother and sister were gone at school. And I got to tool around with my mom running all her errands all week long. I don't remember for sure but I think my dad put an 8-track in that thing. My mom would always listen to The Eagles or Elton John. I do remember having to get in line and wait for gasoline in that thing. And then the next day my dad would take it to work and leave his Mercury Capri and home and we'd wait in line for an hour to put 5 gallons of gas in that thing.

1973 Dodge Dart Swinger. Mine was battleship gray, and had something like 40k miles on it when I bought it for $900 in 1990. Within two days of my purchase I had to replace every hose and gasket because the rubber was so dried out and rotted it just crumbled away.
Got it up to 116 on I-35 between Norman and Pauls Valley, Oklahoma one night. Drove it from OKC to Memphis the summer before my senior year, which started my lifelong love of road trips.
When I bought it it only had an AM radio, which exposed me to a lot of 50s and 60s rock on KOMA that I never would have heard or appreciated otherwise.
About a month before I graduated high school I totaled it. Was speeding out of a mall parking lot, sun got in my eyes, and I didn’t see that I was driving directly at a curb. I went airborne, and when I landed I blew out three tires and basically ripped the undercarriage apart. The death blow was the bent frame, though.
