People say this after years of minutes-long compilations of Russian soldiers killing themselves to avoid being captured, and somehow North Korea wouldn't do the same with theirs.
geltance@reddit
It's not like Ukrainian forces were never caught torturing or killing prisoners or finishing soldiers off with more and more drone grenades
mschuster91@reddit
It's an utter rarity though that Russian PoWs get mistreated - UA needs them alive and healthy both as a propaganda tool (the Russians have a better life being UA POWs than they'd have even back home away from the war) and for prisoner exchanges.
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
Russian POWs get mistreated all the time. Even executed.
And no, their life as a POW is not better. That statement is pretty laughable.
geltance@reddit
Sure. I trust you bro.
mschuster91@reddit
Got any sources that suggest widespread torture, execution or other forms of mistreatment of Russian PoWs by Ukraine? In contrast, the despicable abuse Ukrainian PoWs have to endure in Russia has been widely documented and discussed right in this very subreddit. Hell Russians don't just torture prisoners, they torture their fellow soldiers as well, look up Dedovshchina - a staple of Russian military history all the way back when they were a Czardom.
And there have also been reports from prisoners asking to not be transferred back to Russia because they fear either reprisals for letting themselves get caught or getting sent back to the front (which is actually a violation of international laws on war - exchanged prisoners are not to be sent back!). Unfortunately they're hard to find since Google is swamped with report about Kara-Mursa and the other high-profile oppositionals that got exchanged recently.
RedSkinTiefling@reddit
In the social media age theirs countless videos of prisoners being mistreated by BOTH side of the conflict. To say one side isn't is dishonest. The whole early onset of the invasion Twitter and Reddit was filled with videos of Ukrainians mistreating or executing pows.
esjb11@reddit
Tbf there is a million russian soldiers fighting. Most of the videos we see of people killing themselves show no indication of anyone comming to capture them. A few videos from such a large amount of people really dosnt mean much
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
According to Ukraine, there are 600,000 to 700,000 Russians fighting in Ukraine.
However, about half of that number is Ukrainians.
BasalGiraffe7@reddit
In all of the videos none of them are combat ready or in combat. They're in situations where they're cornered/injured and their squads defeated are in the expectation of being taken in.
And again, they aren't "a few videos", and they all kill themselves in the same way, like following instructions.
ppmi2@reddit
You are like really dumb, they kill themselves to put themselves out of their misery, Ukraine doesnt take people on drone distance, they rutinelly execute soldiers with drones drops.
esjb11@reddit
No. Being struck by a drone is really not a sign of being "in the expectations of being taken in" In fact it shows that they very likely are in a position where its very difficult to be taken in. Thats the absolute majority of such videos.
That they do it the same way is really not a sign of following instructions if said method is to shot oneself in the head when being an armed soldier. Its the most basic and logic way to go about if they want to kill themselves.

The funniest thing is, the idea of letting soldiers commit suicide to evade has been pretty common globally throughout all of history. Even in some parts of the west, high value targets such as pilots are given cyanide pills to have the option of not being tortured since they tend to be killed brutally if they are.
The people falling for propaganda are the ones who think North Korea, an authoritarian pariah state hell bent on ensuring no one leaves and lets the world know what it’s like there, would be the exception. A lot of countries do it, and it doesn’t take much commonsense to realise that North Korea will be one of the strictest countries with this policy.
bubajofe@reddit
Stop reading comic books. Military personnel arent issued pills
123yes1@reddit
Maybe don't make wide sweeping statements if you want to be right.
U-2 pilots were often offered cyanide pills, Francis Powers for instance was issued one that he contemplated taking during the 1960s U-2 shoot down incident.
Aleksandr Ogorodnik was a CIA agent was issued a suicide pill in the event he was caught and took it when he had caught in 1977.
These are just a few of the examples from the US alone.
bubajofe@reddit
Not military. They're spies.
Fenecable@reddit
U-2 pilots are part of the military.
big_cock_lach@reddit
The world isn’t America. I personally know an ex-F18 pilot in the Australian Air Force who said they’d been given options to commit suicide to evade capture in Afghanistan because the militias hated pilots and would torture them as much as possible. They’d be told to not to use it, but gave it to them as a last resort to have a better death.
The other person provided one of many examples of ex-U2 pilots saying the same thing, and while CIA, many are still doing military intelligence for those programmes. Not to mention, the US Air Force had U2s as well, not just the CIA. They all say the same thing, they’re given the option if they want it to avoid being tortured to death. Perhaps protecting information was another reason, but none of them mentioned that as far as I’m aware.
Not to mention, the Nazis were infamous for it as well. It’s harder to find public information about it now, since it’s not something that’s really required at the moment, and it’s typically a bad look. Plus, those involved aren’t going to bring it up for no reason, and journalists are unlikely to ask about it.
Lastly, the US was considering bringing back suicide pills during the War on Terror in the mid-2010s. They stated that they stopped using them once the Cold War had ended due to not having a use, but that may change with the War on Terror. In the end they opted against it as the military wasn’t too keen on it, it was more politicians considering reintroducing it. It does show that the US military still used them during the Cold War though.
https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2015/02/19/suicide-pills-needed-in-fight-against-isis-death-cult
Sure, spy films grossly over exaggerate their use, but where’s there’s smoke there’s fire. It mightn’t be like it is in those films etc, but it is a thing. Suicide pills aren’t the only option either, the Russians were infamous for using grenades, hoping to take out the enemies capturing them as well when they commit suicide. There’s also always the option of using a hand gun or blade etc. It’s not hard to commit suicide if you’re a soldier.
AnoniMiner@reddit
For all the crying by Zelensky of NK soldiers in Russia, they still haven't produced a single one solid proof. The latest example they have is just a guy from Asia. And since RU borders with NK, they would look very similar if from some far Eastern Russian region. Personally I'm skeptical of all NK soldiers claims until solid evidence is shown. So far there's none.
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
Whatever you think, this story has been a resounding PR success for Ukraine.
No one is actually thinking about the real implications of NK soldiers in this war.
The standard thinking process is just “North Korea + Ukraine = outrage!”
The two NK soldiers were captured in Kursk, which is not in Ukraine.
I don’t think it dawns on many people that NK soldiers would be in Kursk defending against a Ukrainian invasion of Russia.
Moreover, North Korea aid to Russia started in response to America shaking down South Korea for 250,000 artillery shells to send to Ukraine.
While people like to jeer about Putin “begging” North Korea for artillery, no one wants to acknowledge that Russia most likely offered to give NK nuclear technology and missile technology.
georgeb1904@reddit
Didn’t they come out with pictures of journals found on the bodies of NK soldiers, written in neat Korean?
AnoniMiner@reddit
If we're thinking about the same thing, those had all the hallmarks of being fake. They were basically what a SK would write thinking that's how NKs do. A bit like an American writing a journal pretending to be English and then using "color" vs "colour", "elevator" vs "lift", "couch" vs "sofa" and such.
HKEY_LOVE_MACHINE@reddit
Until the end, the tankies will defend the North Korean regime...
First it was denying NK has any deal with Russia, then denying they sent any soldiers, and now denying they received the same orders as the russians.
The weirdest part in all this, is how 99.99% of these militants will never ever see North Korea itself, only convincing each others on online forums that everything is fine in NK.
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
All the tankies I know never denied that because Russia didn’t deny it and North Korea offered to send 50,000 troops back in 2022.
“Tankie” has just become a euphemism to mean anyone who does not hold the mainstream “party line”.
Actual tankies is probably a group you have never actually met and instead you are referring to people who hold even mild skepticism about the claims made.
shieeet@reddit
Lmao, who cares what Seoul or their National Intelligence Service says? Concerning North Korea, they’re behind so much of the fraudulent shit posted in Radio Free Asia that they can be dismissed out of hand.
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
If you haven’t noticed, South Korea has been having a few “problems” recently.
They need something to distract people away from those “problems”.
Snuff pieces about North Korea always work in times of trouble.
Icy-Cry340@reddit
Yeah man, we’ve been hearing these tales for some time now.

Problem is, it sounded like absolute nonsense, and still does.
Fenecable@reddit
No one simps for authoritarians quite like /u/Icy-Cry340.
Ol' reliable.
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
Really they just don’t read whatever headline and believe it if it reinforces their existing biases.
Icy-Cry340@reddit
At this point Zelensky is as authoritarian as anyone, but I don't especially care about that criteria. We need to destroy Russia regardless of whether their democracy works or not, that's not what this game is about.
Old_Wallaby_7461@reddit
It's very funny to see you make this claim when I can go to combat footage and see hourlong compilations of Russians killing themselves instead of surrendering
Why would the DPRK be different?
Antique-Resort6160@reddit
Nobody wants to get tortured by the Ukrainians, apparently.
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
Both sides are pretty brutal in their treatment of prisoners. But that isn’t exactly new or surprisingly
Ukrainians fighting for Russia get particularly bad treatment.
The same is true for Ukrainians who are captured by Russo-Ukrainian units.
Most common thing is just executing POWs.
There isn’t a “better side” in this area. There is deep hatred on both sides towards the other.
Icy-Cry340@reddit
They don’t want to be executed by drone with someone zooming in on their suffering for ukrosimp masturbation material.
Ok-Code6623@reddit
*Zuffering
Mundane_Emu8921@reddit
There’s your problem.
Icy-Cry340@reddit
People kill themselves in hopeless situations when they want to go out in their own terms. Surrender isn’t even an option in those vids.
Old_Wallaby_7461@reddit
Nope. Plenty of videos opting for the grenade instead of the surrender
Icy-Cry340@reddit
Who is offering them surrender.
Old_Wallaby_7461@reddit
Ukrainians? We've seen them surrender to drones. They know it's an option.
esjb11@reddit
We have also seen them get droned when trying to surrender to drones
rowida_00@reddit
Unless you were actually there in the frontlines, in every given situation, you can’t know for sure why they’ve ended their own lies. It’s that simple.
Sirmalta@reddit
What.
How does it sound like nonsense?
Especially north koreans... a secretive and violent dictatorship that punishes entire generations of families because of someones actions.
You think these men arent told their families will be tortured and killed if they're captured?
Thats some wildly ignorant shit.
Boring_Management449@reddit
The layers of racism and orientalism in the assumptions about Korea simply destroy any possibility of debate this reality, or provide constructive criticism. Dystopian anime fanfics for the Western crowd, predisposed to believe anything that proclaim their superiority.
