Were those the thrust reversers in the end? It almost sounded like it was trying to go back up
OpenParr@reddit
Jesus, has there been a determination why they weren’t able to slow down in time?
NYPuppers@reddit
I seem to recall someone mentioning the runway length was already near or below the minimums for this aircraft. That by itself (if true), or that with a combo of hydroplaning or brake failure or landing late, would lead to this.
notathr0waway1@reddit
Yes, that pilot analysis YouTube channel with a guy that sounds like he has a Russian accent went over it. Basically if the plane had been able to use the entire runway, it would have been close, but they've taken about half of the runway out of service. Plus it was wet. That runaway is really only appropriate for single piston engine airplanes. It was one of those why the hell were they even trying to land there things.
Kaleidoscope9498@reddit
Not really out of service, the town is kinda smashed between mountains and the sea, so if you're coming from inland you need to land into the runway to avoid a too high angle. It's Ubatuba airport.
inventingnothing@reddit
Minor Correction: Single Engine Piston
One piston planes would be subject to the the most wild vibrations and not in a good way.
DoesntMatterEh@reddit
Lmao thank you
titsmuhgeee@reddit
Looked they came in hot on the approach, plus landed long. That, plus a wet runway.

Oh, that famous European, spoken bei everyone living in Euroland.

European usually means non-German/French/Spanish/Russian because these all have distinct accents.

But seriously, what the heck is this guy's accent (link snagged from above is https://youtu.be/fGMZI5iudkQ?si=UtrFcKSKIc7YNRYu)?
"European" is as close as I'm getting as well...with a hearty dash of this accent thrown in.

He's Ukranian FFS. He posts on the Ukranian channel about the war. He is also a 737 pilot. The hat is likely because Winnipeg has a huge Ukranian population.

The performance charts for the Cessna 525 show a required length of 835m at gross in ideal conditions. This airfield has a usable length of only 560m. Even accounting for a shortening of the required length because it's under gross, I"d bet it was still far too short for sure.
PowwowPuffer@reddit
TL;DR Citation jet with a 789m landing distance attempted to land on 600m of wet, ungrooved runway.
[A Cessna 525 CitationJet CJ1+, PR-GFS, overshot runway 09 at Ubatuba Airport, SP (UBT), crossed a road and broke up on a beach, bursting into flames. The pilot was killed, 4 occupants were rescued alive and three persons on the ground were also treated for injuries.
UBT has a single 940 m long asphalt runway (09/27), with the first 380 meters closed for landing, according to the AIP. The distance from the paved end of runway 09 to the perimeter fence is 135 meters.
According to the airport director, jet traffic is uncommon at UBT. He stated that PR-GFS touched down just short of the threshold with about 600 m of runway remaining. At the time of the accident it was raining.*](https://asn.flightsafety.org/wikibase/470557)
Decent thread by nerds
hafhaf555@reddit
you know, it sounds like old Nurburgring - no room for error.
Tpxyt56Wy2cc83Gs@reddit
Yeah, the runway 09 has a displaced runway because of the mountains near the airport, so this runway, that was the runway they tried to land, has only about 500m extension.
Fluid_Maybe_6588@reddit
It almost looks like he was adding power at the end…maybe to takeoff again but it was too late.
chupacabra816@reddit
It seems that he tried a go around in order to crash that hard…
BeardedManatee@reddit
If im not mistaken, it looks like his flaps are fully up until he’s on the runway. That guy was hauling ass.
chupacabra816@reddit
Frame 0:23. Flaps up. At the end pilot pulls them down… too late 🫡
Josysclei@reddit
Runway has around 600m usable space when coming from the mountains like he did, so the descent is not too steep. Usually jets land from the other side, the beach, so they can use the full 950m.
chupacabra816@reddit
I don’t see flaps down…
OneStrongGopher@reddit
Pause it when its closer to the camera. Flaps are down.
BeardedManatee@reddit
They come down after landing!

BeardedManatee@reddit
They should be fully down before landing.
styckx@reddit
Won't be the first time that happened. I think there are at least 3 episodes of Mayday Air Disaster weren't paying attention and forgot to set the flaps.

you try recording a plane crash 2 metres from you
LowNefariousness6541@reddit
Mm not two metres. As long as the aircraft or any of it's debris doesn't hit me, even at two metres I'd be happy to. Imagine you're the only one who got the footage and the crash investigators don't have the crash to analyse. The amount of future victims to remain victims is significant in the grand scheme of things. Money shot's are real. My comment stands.
LowNefariousness6541@reddit
Explain the downvote please. I am interested.
draculasbitch@reddit
You are looking at this from the perspective of you already knowing the outcome. They couldn’t have possibly known what was going to happen at the last second. There is traffic there. There is a plane barreling at them that turns at the past second. There is the shock of what you are seeing happen in front of you. Professional camera people are trained to follow the action no matter what. This person wasn’t. You made it seem like “if I was there I’d have filmed it perfect.” But you didn’t think of the entire situation. That’s why the downvotes.

JPAV8R@reddit
You know what? I was just thinking about this movie the other day! I think it’s the LA fires that made me think of it.
rostov007@reddit
Same here. I rewatched it the other night for the same reason. I’ve always liked it, even when other people pan it.
JPAV8R@reddit
I watched it when I didn’t know anything about flying so I just enjoyed the story. Probably what helped it.
rostov007@reddit
That’s the thing though, I don’t understand why knowledge of flying interferes with enjoyment for new watchers. I mean, his engine ingested ash, smoke, possibly limbs and who knows what else. Aside from a full-on trunk strike like the Goodman character’s what’s so hard to believe.
Airlines divert around active volcanoes because of ash damage. Anyway, suspension of mild disbelief helps in cinema in a general sense. Speed, Air Force One, the Matrix. All good movies.

How do they do it?
MangoShadeTree@reddit
Wow that brings back memories. Not the movie, but semi similar situation.
4th of July, sitting in a similar small boat with 2 buddies, probably like 19. Weed and booze. Launched a few fireworks and then all out, turned to the old flair gun launcher we found. Air is almost still; pot and firework clouds linger.
My buddy fired the flare gun straight up. Its reach's the zenith and starts to come down. It looks like its coming right for us. We have a plastic gas can in the little boat, it would burn right through if it hit. Oh shit! It really is coming straight for us!
Same kind of deal, me just cranking at the outboard and it's not starting. I look up, oh fuck I don't want to swim for it. Just put the engine in drive and start cranking, at least the propeller will spin a little. That combined with my drunk buddy paddling with his hands was just enough for the flair to land 3 ft behind the boat.

huh, i just realized that if someone ever wanted to commit suicide and make it look like an accident (for life insurance purposes etc.) they could earn a pilot's license and crash their plane lol

LowNefariousness6541@reddit
It's ok. It's founded. Not saying that's what it was (and I very much doubt it in this case) but yeah, it happens and a person of sound judgement should consider all aspects before discounting anything off the cuff.
danielsdian@reddit
The pilot was alive but stuck in the wreckage in the crash. Some people saw him trying to move. The plane landed upside down, cockpit facing the beach, so it looks like he drowned.
LowNefariousness6541@reddit
Mm he didn't drown, the comments quote him explaining what happened.. idk.
fellipec@reddit
I was like "Get out of here right now, you'll die"
What a close call for the camera man.
LowNefariousness6541@reddit
(probably less of a close call than it would seem. Don't be swayed by the poor camera work, they could have gotten it and contributed to many saved lives down the track so I'm thoroughly unimpressed) Money sho_...oh :/ some air crash investigators are going to be pointlessly heart broken.
BeardedManatee@reddit
Looks to me like the pilot forgot flaps (how the F) and then put them down after landing with the idea that he could wheel-brake, got too slow, at which point he was fucked. He should’ve done another pass the instant he realized he was no-flaps and over-speed.
LowNefariousness6541@reddit

very late on the thrust reverser!!
possibly high rate of descent and high ground speed
LovelyLlama11@reddit
holy shit. I'm not a pilot myself so I am curious, at what point in the runway would they need to realize the speed was too high in order to perform a successful touch and go?
babyp6969@reddit
So, it’s gonna be different for any given aircraft, configuration, and environmental situation. Most runways have 1000 foot markers to give you an idea how much runway you have remaining. However, they are not super useful for making a go around decision.
Generally, you need to know how much total runway you need to stop the aircraft, the latest point you can touch down with that amount of runway remaining, and go around if you’re going to touch down after that point and/or anything happens in the approach or right after touchdown that leads you to believe your stopping distance has changed significantly for the worse.
lockheed2707@reddit
The region is mountainous and therefore the threshold where the touch occurred was very far back, in another video it is possible to see the touch on the runway from another angle and you can see that the approach angle is accentuated, in addition to the fact that apparently the runway was 300 meters shorter than necessary for landing in that condition.
Red-Truck-Steam@reddit
I’m only PPL, but every time I’ve ever landed, my CFI and/or myself will speak aloud “200 feet, stable/unstable” and make the appropriate go around procedures assuming a landing is unstable. A touch n go is done upon landing on the runway, so they should’ve gone around way before.
beamin1@reddit
4 passengers survived....is it me or did it sound like they had hit the throttles there at the end?
gsmitheidw1@reddit
Reverse thrust?
planescarsandtrucks@reddit
That aircraft type doesn’t have thrust reversers.
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
Yes it does.
vsimakhin@reddit
They are not thrust reversers. They are deflectors, and used to be on the older models without FADEC. The crashed airplane doesn't (didn't) have them
bobweaver112@reddit
This airplane doesn’t have reverse thrust
railker@reddit
And looks like elevators up, desperation to try and get off the ground instead of crashing. Waaaaay too late, if these are accurate observations.

Miserable-Lawyer-233@reddit

Airwolfhelicopter@reddit
The way my eyes widened when I realized it wasn’t going to stop…
Brake failure, I’m guessing?
Ill-Bee8787@reddit
I mean he was slipping it in there quick. Although he looked pretty smooth touching down, he could have been a little fast on a short runway
LCKLCKLCK@reddit
Would the best thing to do in this scenario be just full throttle and do a go around?
Snuhmeh@reddit
He shouldn't have even attempted the landing. The runway is too short for this plane no matter the conditions.
Ill-Bee8787@reddit
As long as you have enough runway remaining to get it back in the air at the point you realize you won’t stop before the end of the runway, that could be an option.
canttakethshyfrom_me@reddit
At the pace that plane was still coming at the end of the video, seems like any touch down without the stall horn blaring would have been too fast.
ActiveMicrowave@reddit
It's interesting there's no thrust reversers on this aircraft type
Hugh_Jainus69420@reddit
It's not really that interesting. Most light business jets don't have thrust reversers. They don't need it. It's a ton of added weight and complexity for a small motor that doesn't produce a significant amount of idle thruat.
RevMagnum@reddit
Reversers sure help but aren't that effective unless it's a prop.
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
Umm what?! They're extremely effective and the main source of slowing down on all small body and large body airliners.
RevMagnum@reddit
Nope, a common misconception. USAF Tankers are deprived of them because they deem extra weight and not that efficient.
At least hit Google and educate yourself before having an opinion please.
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
I said small and large body airliners. As in, a320s, 737s, 380s etc. Just cos usaf tankers don't have them, doesn't mean I'm wrong.
RevMagnum@reddit
You're wrong, they're not "extremely effective at slowing down", Commercials use them to save money on brake units:)
If you're interested please show yourself the courtesy to read or watch about them for a few minutes.
MidsummerMidnight@reddit
Oh dear, go and give the phone back your mummy, you shouldn't be allowed to post such drivel on the Internet.
RevMagnum@reddit
Ohh my clueless redditor, I'm too old to use a smart phone for typing. I'm using an old IBM style keyboard with gray function keys. I swear.
RedditorsRsheeple@reddit
No they are not, 90% of the time airliners use Reverse thrust IDLE, brake pads on the landing gears are the main source of slowing down. Much more cheaper to maintain. Full Reverse thrust is mostly used when the runway is slippery.
RevMagnum@reddit
You know folks, a couple mins of web search might have informed you on what I meant but you opt to oppose based on your beliefs instead of facts.
Safe flights you all:)
RevMagnum@reddit
You know folks, a couple mins of web search might have informed on you what I meant but you opt to oppose based on your beliefs instead of facts.

ActiveMicrowave@reddit
So ur saying the ones on commercial airlines are not effective? The reason this one might not have it, the tech might not have been available or cost effective, etc.
RevMagnum@reddit
I meant "not that effective" when you're skidding or slipping and seeing those red lights getting closer!
Jet reversers just deflect a portion of the thrust whereas the prop blades can really reverse the thrust.
TheFuckingHippoGuy@reddit
Maybe you're getting downvoted because for props it's a different mechanism (putting the props into beta range; changing the blade angle)?
Reversers only really serve to give a little bit more assistance in reducing wear and tear on the wheelbrakes+tires, and fires that can come from heating them up. On a 737 for an example, reversers only buy you an extra 3-400 feet of safe stopping distance.
RevMagnum@reddit
Yes, that's exactly what I meant, much more effective with reversed blades. I'm betting majority of them thinks they work like a magic wand stopper.
Downvoted by ignorance is an honor:)

How did the cameraman know to record this landing on their phone? Was there any squawk code or emergency declaration beforehand?
Therefore I am not implying it's fake at all. Unless they knew something was wrong beforehand, I'm just wondering what's the odds of recording what seemed like a normal landing of a private jet but became a runway overrun and crash.
haarschmuck@reddit
Plane spotting is very common, to the point where people have youtube channels where they livestream takeoffs and landings from an airport fence and get tons of viewers.
