Buckaroo Banzai

Saw this in the theatre when it opened, and honestly think it altered my brain chemistry. My children are girding themselves for the yearly viewing as my 53rd bday approaches next month. Never been a movie like it, before or since. Please tell me I’m not off my rocker for being mildly infatuated with this hilarious piece of teenage boy fever dream.
Ssgt_Winstead@reddit
Long way from Robo Cop
tgrantt@reddit
Love them both.
Ssgt_Winstead@reddit
Is that Webster there in the front? 😂
tgrantt@reddit
Nope. Webster was played by Emmanuel Lewis. This is Blue Blazer irregular Scooter Lindley, played by Damon Hines. (Who also played Murtaugh's son in the Lethal Weapon movies.)
Haselrig@reddit
Just watched Leviathan the other day and I realized how much I miss Peter Weller in my B movies. He had his own style.
tgrantt@reddit
He was in one of the later seasons of The Last Ship. Still awesome
Haselrig@reddit
Didn't catch that one, yet. Good to hear he's still doing his thing.
tgrantt@reddit
Better than I expected. The last season is a little "God and country" for me (I'm a Canadian) but still quite good.
Haselrig@reddit
It's one of those shows I hope to catch up on in a magical week where I binge the the whole thing in one go.
Last-Relationship166@reddit
I never saw that one, but I notice Peter Weller was in it. That guy was excellent in Cronenberg's "Naked Lunch".
timothypjr@reddit
OH MY GOD YES. That movie haunts me to this day.
fogcat5@reddit
also robocop -- but Bukaroo was special
Helenesdottir@reddit
Everybody need see Buckaroo Banzai!
The number of excellent actors in this fun flick stunned me, even back then. This middle-aged teenage girl still watches this again and again.
Blog_Pope@reddit
Fucking cemented John Lithgow as the best movie villian ever in my mind.

Emilio Lizardo and the oscillation overthruster! Laugh-a while you can monkey boy!

jackparadise1@reddit
Yep. Came across a hard copy of it 30 years ago. Love it. The credit music at the end is so upbeat!
arkensto@reddit
Yeah, not counting the guys in the picture and all the bad guys but even the asylum guard was played by the guy that does Mike from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.
He had hair back then.

I loved this movie. I made the mistake of trying to show it to my first girlfriend. That was the first time I realized there's dude movies that you only watch and talk about with other dudes.
FirstSunbunny@reddit
I’m not a dude, and I adore this film.
ethan__l2@reddit
It's not a universal rule, just a general one.
FirstSunbunny@reddit
I think it’s a good litmus test tbh. Those who love this film are the right sort of people.
ethan__l2@reddit
Maybe you should have been my first girlfriend.

Does the movie explain why he's wearing that getup?
in-a-northerntown@reddit (OP)
His characters name is New Jersey. And he’s wanting to be in Buckaroos band the Hong Kong Cavaliers. In essence, no.
joshinburbank@reddit
They imply that this is what he "thinks" they dress like because he is a nerdy doctor, not a cool rock star/scientist.
in-a-northerntown@reddit (OP)
Yes Buckaroo asks him in the beginning while they’re doing brain surgery whether he’s like to join the band. Aks him is he can sing, and Goldblum replies “I can dance.” This is while other doctors sit around eating Chinese food watching the brain surgery taking place.
I love this movie.

Still waiting for a sequel. Or a reboot.
in-a-northerntown@reddit (OP)
I’d prefer Hollywood keep their slimy mitts off this bit of perfection. But, I’m old and cantankerous
M_Solent@reddit
I’m of two minds about that. I feel gypped that we never got the sequel promised at the end of the movie. It would’ve been cool with those actors in their prime. Part of me doesn’t want to mess with the magic, part of me wants to see a reboot with modern CGI.
Snarkapotomus@reddit
I always heard the planned sequel was retooled into Big Trouble in Little China. Not sure if that's true but if it is, I can live with that.
M_Solent@reddit
Hmmm. I shouldn’t have read that comment right before getting into bed. ….
in-a-northerntown@reddit (OP)
Hmm. Man I dunno. The whole thing is wrapped in myth and craziness and I just don’t know if someone could could do it now, narrative wise. But I don’t know as that you’re wrong. I just love this flipping movie!
M_Solent@reddit
I love it too. Believe me. It would need a director who really cares about the movie, the characters, and the lore. I think they could do it without rehashing it. Have as many of the original actors come back as mentors to a new team or something.
dfjdejulio@reddit
I think The World Crime League buried it.
M_Solent@reddit

Tartmama3@reddit
My goodness… my husband freaking loves this movie. We watch it (loosely) at least 6 times a year. Don’t even get me started how often we have the original Dune on at our house…
thechervil@reddit
This is without a doubt one of my favorite movies.
Same age as you (54 in a few weeks) and still love it!
My family loves trying to "recast" movies with current actors.
This is one of the few that we can never seem to recast.
Who else could be Buckaroo?
Who else could be Perfect Tommy?
And this is one of the movies I use as an example of John Lithgow's range and true "acting" ability.
And that's not even mentioning Jeff Goldblum or my first exposure to the greatness of Clancy Brown.
That scene (you know the one) always gets me.
Every.time.
The fact that the cast have nothing but good things to say about it is very telling.
Ok-Description-4640@reddit
Absolutely love Buckaroo Banzai. I’ve never met anyone who saw it in a theater, it was out for like just a week. But all summer there were posters and a novelization and all that but it just never appeared, at least where I was. But once it hit HBO I taped it and watched it at least every other day for a while.
That said, I never read the comics or anything else that’s come out in the last 15 years. Even though it’s the same writer, it’s not the same.

My friend and I met Lewis Smith (Perfect Tommy) in a Dever StarCon hotel hallway. We were going to wait in line for his autograph but the line was WAY too long so we headed up to our room and got off as he entered the elevator. He saw the script in my hand with the photo of the HKC, stepped off the elevator with us, and hung out in the hall JUST WITH us for about 10 min. Absolutely made the event really special for us.

Skeezix_the_Cat@reddit
Except "not my goddamn planet, monkeyboy," was ~~Doc Brown~~ ~~Commander Kruge~~ John Bigboote, not John Worfin, wasn't it?
edked@reddit
I think people confuse it with Whorfin/Lizardo saying "just you wait, monkeyboy!" in an earlier scene, but yeah, the "not my goddamn planet" line is Bigboote's. "Monkeyboy" seems to be a general Red Lectroid epithet for humans, as they both use it.

They are walking in the LA River channel, also seen in Grease and the truck chase in Terminator 2, among other places.

Oh god my favorite movie.
I worked at Advanced Micro Devices and had a yoyodyne parking sticker and one time a group of us went to lunch and a male worker asked me when I worked there..
I told him... :)
Years later I gave him a tiger striped pocket protector he absolutely loved it and used it every day.
I swear they modeled a movie character after him . Good ole Ray used to dry shave in the cube we shared. And had a red swingline ( truth)

My late mother liked that movie

It’s one of my favorite films of all time.
I also joined the short-lived official fan club… Was anyone else here in that?

Loved it so much I bought the Marvel comic adaptation, which seems to be pretty rare now. I also saw it in the theater with friends, and we all had so many questions afterward. Lithgow reprised his character on an SNL skit if you can find it. I was crushing hard on Penny Priddy!

It remains a favorite. It's punk, it's sci-fi, it pretty much has it all.
