Michigan, Indiana, Ohio prepping.

So I posted something for my daughter who lives in LA who is way too close to the fires now. This sub gave her tons of info and things she should do to prepare. So I’m starting a bag for our house. Where we live there aren’t hurricanes, floods, earthquakes. We mainly just have a tornado every long once in a while. So I’m going to do a bag to put in the basement with all our important documents or at least copies.
What else should I be prepping for?
We have a generator. So we are okay if power goes out.

Snowstorms.
Power outages and closed roads and snow piled up so high it blocks your doors from opening.

Make sure you can stay warm. Not furnace warm, but life savingwarm.

Yeah I have only electric heat and I'm wondering if I have a large metal bowl like a cauldron if I could make a fire in my living room with the windows cracked. Obviously if want to pick it up off the floor with some blocks. But idk

Please don't do that lol.
Plenty of blankets can work. Just snuggle in and mostly stay in.

Lol ok

Tornado, snowstorm, and unfortunately yes Indiana can have earthquakes. Luckily so far they've been small, but if the New Madrid fault goes off big it could be worse. It supposedly rang church bells near the east coast last time it really let loose.

Make sure your papers are sealed in case of water damage

Planning on putting the originals of everything In a fireproof safe. Copies of everything I’m planning on putting in the bag we need to grab if we need to leave.

Keep in mind not all fire proof safes are water proof or even resistant… speaking of which I should seal up my docs in the safe today.

some thoughts ....
your house can catch fire in any state, wildfire evacuations aside, on average the USA has 350,000 resident fires a year. Maybe put the BOB in the garage or closer to the door so you can grab it fast?
Water? Few places in the USA this year had issues with water mains bursting, it happens.
Can also read posts / search here for deep pantry, mostly just buy extra at the grocery store of all your stuff, beer, food, soap, TP, all the stuffs you normally get, then get xx weeks of them. So, maybe you get a full 4 weeks of all the stuff. This week, you use the 4 week old stuff and buy another week, and keep rotating. Having 4 weeks should be plenty for the vast majority of disaster's you'll face in the upper midwest.
How do you heat your house, those states can get cold. Perhaps some backup there as well, e.g. mr buddy heater or extra firewood, or etc..
How long will your generator last at normal useage? Might check to have backup fuel for as long as you think power might go out, 4 weeks?? should cover most stuff too there. What type of genny, diesel, propane, nat gas, etc. ?

Upper Midwest/Great Lakes Region Here.
I would recommend you check my post about preparing for a Power Outage. If you're prepared for a long-term power outage, you're prepared for 80% of SHTF situations.

As someone from Ohio (NE Ohio tbf), my biggest concern is snowstorms over tornados. That means things to keep warm, things for when power goes out (generator, batteries, candles/flashlights, cooking methods, even an outdoor freezer), and whatever you might need for frozen pipes. In addition, I think having somethings to be able to keep warm in your car if caught in a snowstorm is important as well

I’m in that general area too, and wildfires out west were a part of my catalyst to start getting serious about one aspect of my preps. As you mentioned not too many wild fires here, but house fires can happen anywhere. I made a deal with a friend and a relative who live reasonably close to store a Tupperware bin at their house, and I also store one for them. In the bin I have as you mentioned, copies of important documents, backups of photos on flash drives, a couple changes of clothes… and a few other things (I’ll let your imagination run wild). I read an article about folks having only two hours to pack, and thought what if weren’t home and you came home and you were just looking at a smoldering foundation. If I didn’t have friends or relatives close by I might consider a safe deposit box, or even a small storage unit.

Thank you for this. My brother is on the east coast. We could store each others info. If anything ever happened here or out there we would go to each others house anyhow.
