What was traditionally competitive for a single seat mil guy?

Hiring landscape seems to be mean reverting, and that was before my time. I’m just starting my last set of orders and wanting to start getting set up. When I separate, I’m looking at maybe 1600 total time, all turbine and all but flight school hours as PIC. I see places like Delta say 2500 with 1000 TPIC. I won’t get near 2500, but I am close to 1000 TPIC right now. American won’t even let me start an application without having the unrestricted ATP. Does this leave UMPP as my only real option? Is there something else I need to do that would help (online masters, try to go to safety officer school, etc)?

FWIW for DL what I was hearing was 2500 with NO TPIC requirement, as opposed to what UA/AA wanted. I'd say apply and find out (for those that will let you submit the app). There was a recent rumor that DL no longer is taking people straight from MIL (wanting them to go to a regional/other 121 first), but that doesn't really align with how they've done things historically... They were interviewing people within 2 years of separation though and giving them CJOs.

The Delta recruiters told me at ATP/CTP 6 months ago they want fighter pilots and V-22 pilots to “just do a year at a regional.”

You’re in a dilemma I think a lot of people in your shoes are facing right now. Not enough hours for the Big 3, although you can definitely try UMPP. FWIW Delta is encouraging their single seat guys to “just do a year at a regional to build heavy/121 experience.” LCCs are mostly not hiring, except for Frontier which requires a ATP. You just missed Breeze’s application window, but you can give Allegiant, Avelo and Sun Country a shot. These companies are hiring very minimal recently, so I recommend you take leave if necessary and head to NGPA next month. I think you need to show face to these recruiters to get the process moving. And you have the regionals, which 3 have contracts that you should avoid. And the others may be scared you’ll leave very soon. This makes Deltas comment to me above extremely out of touch with reality. So to answer your question, I think you’ll be competitive for the majors after a year of crew experience, is it possible at this point to instruct at CNATRA?
