Veterinary care - looking to switch from Banfield Pet Hospital to a local clinic that cares more. Where do you guys take your dogs?

We’ve been with Banfield for a few years now but lately I feel like they’ve really dropped the ball and don’t seem to care at all about my dog. Every time I call in regarding her recent issues, they dismiss my concern and I’m not happy. As my dog gets older, I want to switch her to a vet that cares more and will give her the right treatment she needs. I’m looking at options near The Colony or Plano but I’m overwhelmed with the options. Any suggestions would be tremendously helpful. Thank you so much!

If there’s a CityVet near you they’ve always been great to me.

Custer Road Animal Hospital. The two vets here used to work at Parker Rd and opened their own clinic.
shippehcat@reddit
Just moved here a week ago and they got me in the day of the snow storm to see my gecko. The other exotic vets I called quoted me at least 5 days out. It was a great experience.

Dr. Fran used to treat our guinea pigs at Parker Road and she was so kind and caring. She really went above and beyond for them.
Civil_Towel1097@reddit
They get my vote as well!
Beginning-Whereas-72@reddit
Yes, ditto! Highly recommended.

We love Paws and Claws at Park and Custer. They treat more holistically and love their patients.

We switched to Allen Veterinary Hospital and we love it. It’s on McDermott near the Braums. The doctors are caring and knowledgeable and it’s easy to make appts, get refills etc. We have an English Mastiff and an elderly Dogue de Bordeaux and they both have received great care here.

Just popping in to recommend staying away from Ohio drive animal hospital- they 100% missed a very obvious torn ACL and diagnosed as arthritis.
We literally walked into the next vet and they said “oh your dog has a torn ACL”

Vetsavers was great with my dog

Dr. Fuller and Dr. Jones at Advanced Veterinary Care of Plano (Independence & Legacy) are the best! They get on the floor with my dog & take time to show her a little affection. Their staff is so kind from the vet techs to the front desk ladies too. I never have to wait long & I like that they take time to explain treatment options. We had to put down one of our dogs last year & they made the process really peaceful.

Canyon Creek Animal clinic (Richardson) depending on where in Plano you are located.
AnxietyDepressedFun@reddit
I honestly didn't think I would ever be able to find a place that cared as much as Hillside off Mockingbird in Dallas who really truly are amazing (and open 24 hours some days and until midnight on others) but Canyon Creek has been our go-to since moving to East Plano and I highly recommend them to everyone.

They’ve been our vet for seven years, and it’s been a good experience. Routine checkups, surgeries, etc have all gone very well.

Cannot recommend Custer McDermott Animal Hospital enough!! Growing up we always took our dogs there, and I shadowed there for 2-3 years in high school
The vets always remembered us, and would ask about family members that also took their dogs to them. Drs Cinclair and Pilkington are who I grew up seeing and who I shadowed - my mom also knew their older brothers growing up! Such good people
jiacat9@reddit
Yes we love Dr. Brewer, Dr. Cinclair, and Dr Pilkington!! Have spent couple thousand in here with all my animals over the years like surgeries, extractions, feline asthma, and routine care. I even commuted when I lived in Garland. Love them!
spikelike@reddit
I love Dr Cinclair. He’s so good to my mean af cats
OlderNerd@reddit
Dr Pilkington is wonderful. But all the doctors there are great. Even the staff remembers our dog!

I went to Animal medical center when my dog was still alive and they were wonderful! They always took such good care of my senior pup. Can’t say enough good things about Dr. Cook!!!
Cannibal_Cakes@reddit
Lazy Paws Animal Hospital in Frisco is great.
Commercial_Tart_1198@reddit
I always went to Animal Medical Center of Plano, they were so great when my cat needed surgery. Highly recommend.
TNALTX@reddit
I second this! I also never feel like they try to upsell me on anything.

I like Coit Hedgecoxe for my cats (but I think the vet is a dog person). One thing I like about it is that I always remember where it is.

Allen Family Vet on McDermott...Dr Mathis.

Piggybacking on this, I am looking for a boarding place in Plano/Richardson that can handle an anxious dog.
Our current vet informed us our dog just sits and barks at the other animals until he is hoarse and recommended we find another place to board. We noticed he comes home a few pounds lighter, but were surprised that the vet would direct us elsewhere (and only until after numerous stays.)

I like Companion Animal Hospital on Parker and Preston.
SouthEndXGF@reddit
Been taking my pets here for years. Great clinic, great staff.
smileyaxolotl@reddit
I love it here! He doesn't push for extra services, takes really good care of the pets, and his staff is so sweet and wonderful. You can also quickly get an appointment and no wait once you arrive.
Famous-Rutabaga-3917@reddit
Yes, and the small staff that’s been there for a long time, means they all know your pets. They do space out the appointments so you do t have to wait with other animals the lobby.
rhyde11@reddit
Dr Murphy and his staff at Arbor Hills Veterinary Center ate awesome. My dog had some really bad issues her first year of life, and he was able to help me figure them out and find a medicine (that's meant for pigs) that actually solved it for good!
ihadtopickaname@reddit
I really like High Point Animal Hospital at Spring Creek/Alma. It’s a little more expensive than my last vet, but much closer so that makes up for it. They often have same or next day appointments and the staff really do seem to love my dog.
For urgent care should you ever need it, I can’t say enough good things about MedVet on PGBT between Custer and Alma. Have needed to go there twice with different dogs and they are absolutely incredible.
one_is_enough@reddit
I’ll second Highpoint. We’ve been with them for decades and never a problem.
PurchaseSuccessful23@reddit
I see Dr. Rahman at PetNest and he is really good. They almost always have same day appointments available.
justdoitjenie@reddit (OP)
Is that the one on Coit?
PurchaseSuccessful23@reddit
Yes!
GraceTX@reddit
He used to be the main vet at Banfield East Plano. We really liked him.
Witty_Candle_3448@reddit
Parker Road Animal and Bird Clinic. Love their doctors and staff!
justdoitjenie@reddit (OP)
This was actually one of the options I shortlisted after doing some research. Really good to know you’re happy with their service! Ty
its_the_new_style@reddit
Good clinic but too busy. Drs have always been great, like the shot clinic they run, but it can be difficult to get in when you really need it.
BabySharkFinSoup@reddit
They have walk-in’s almost every day I think? My dog went to the emergency vet on Christmas Day, and I followed up with them the next day. I just went at 1 to wait for it to open at 2, and we were seen and out the door by 3.
dirtt_dawg@reddit
I highly recommend 14th St Animal Hospital, great care, they don't push unnecessary services. Brought my overweight 12yo family dog with congestive heart failure, Dr Wilson got him on the right meds and insisted on daily walks and that ole boy lived another five years
Farazod@reddit
Dr. Wilson is great and is the best priced vet I've ever found. I think their annual teeth cleaning discount is coming up... They're a smaller office and take non-emergency walk-ins after 2pm which even on the busiest day in a full lobby I've only ever had to wait 30 minutes for a nail trim. My 60 pound dog yanks her paws away really badly and any other groomer or pet store has got frustrated and banned her even without growling or biting so +1 to her vet tech staff.
General_Guitar_9767@reddit
We love City Vet at Parker and the tollway. Dr Tomlinson is who we see but I think they also have a new guy that joined in the last year. She takes care of our dog and cat.
ttujr1972@reddit
We have used Castel Hills Animal Hospital for urgent needs.
If you find yourself in East Texas, we have used the Veterinary Medical Center of Athens (https://www.vmcathens.com/) for routine checkups, shots, and teeth cleaning. They are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. M-F and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. S/S, and the prices are way cheaper than anything in DFW. We have an excuse to be out there as the in-laws have a place nearby...

My senior dog is still locked into a Banfield plan but I've started taking the other two (both around 2) to Vetsavers on Preston. It's a drive since they're in Dallas, but I'm so much happier with the care and cost. They're also open on the weekend and are super accommodating.
Dr Bak was even able to squeeze one of my dogs in same day for a second surgery after she pulled her stitches out. Banfield had also ignored my concerns about the same dog, and it wasn't until I started taking her to Vetsavers that I found out about her inflammation. Again, it's probably a bit further than you're looking for, but they do genuinely care about your pets well being. Good luck with your hunt!
mckinneysub@reddit
We just switched from Banfield to CityVet on Preston. We’ve only had one appt so far, but I liked them.
slntdizombimami@reddit
I second CityVet ! Affordable, and I have always had a good experience with the Techs and Vets. Took my two cats and dog there for years before moving South. I am also a former animal hospital worker, so I am very picky !

Dave Cinclair and Dave Pilkington are AMAZING. Tell them Mark sent you. Great vets and amazing men. https://texasveterinary.com/
a_polite_redditor@reddit
We have been taking our cat to Thrive Pet care, Legacy and Coit. Been happy with them so far.
neatgeek83@reddit
We just gave up our Banfield after nearly 20 years and 3 different dogs from the same reasons. We switched to this vet, which is down the street from us https://www.amcofplano.com (compared to the Banfield in Richardson we'd been going to—construction down Coit has been a nightmare).
We've seen all of the vets at this location and have been very pleased with the quality of care and treatment. We also got pet insurance through SPOT for the first time as well.
