No, in Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro and in fact in Austria people are as racist as in Bulgaria, Poland and Hungary. Bulgarian word for man with black skin from Africa is neger, which came from Latin niger - black. It has no negative connotation, like that it has in English. In the past the word for neger was arapin, which came from the word Arab. And had strong negative connotation. In Bulgarian past black people from Africa were extremely rare, and usually part of Ottoman armies, often slave traders. So they kidnapped white Bulgarians to sell them as slaves. Although usually that was done by white Ottomans. Racism is not common in Bulgaria. As racism is the idea that one race is superior. Now liberals in US call anything racist. And many liberals in EU agree. But racism is very specific thing. There is not cultural racism. Because some cultures are superior, as they are far more developed. To call some culture better could be completely objective opinion. Any multiculturalist who disagrees can go and enjoy the ancient rich culture of Talibans. What you can see in Bulgaria is not racism, but fear, that in extremely rare cases could cause aggression. Bulgarians are afraid from foreigners, specially such from Africa and Middle East and you can find the objective reasons for that attitude in Bulgarian past.

Data collected over a minimum of thirteen years with less than 300'000 answers. 300'000. That's enough, if really done scientifically, to get stats on the sentiments of Switzerlands pop. This however? And then: No specs on the exact questions or how folks were chosen to answer those questions. Without more context, up into the trash bin you go.

IAT tests are an highly controversial metric which is considered by a large portion of researchers as unreliable and lacklustre in validity, so I think that the map is trash.
That said, I do think that racism in Italy is increasing at a worrying pace, although it is mostly linked to a general xenophobia (toward people from poorer countries, there's quite the opposing trend toward people from richer countries) rather then to skin-tone directly.
Archelector@reddit
How racist are Italians to Asians
Iāll be studying abroad for a year so Iād like to know what to expect
Inevitable_Anywhere2@reddit
Happy cake-day!
I don't think there is general racism in Italy towards Asians, but I would say it depends on which Asian country you come from. In general, you can expect to be perceived as 'Chinese,' regardless of whether you're from Korea, Japan, or elsewhere. That said, there is a significant Chinese community in Italy, and they are generally well-regarded as hardworking and non-troublesome. Xenophobia might be more common towards people from poorer countries like India or Pakistan, although there are communities from these countries in Italy as well. Overall, I don't think the situation is worse than in any other country, quite the opposite. Especially if you are in a big city and in a university setting.
Archelector@reddit

Drtikol42@reddit
I am Czech, did this survey and the dataset at least in my case was stacked in such manner that other result than black people=bad was not possible.
You push different buttons based on what is displayed (ethnicity and positive/negative emotion). And how is it supposed to work is that combination of ethnicity and emotion that you agree with takes you less time to push the buttons. But of course you get better at it as test progresses. My dataset was ordered: 1) Black people=good, 2 White people bad 3. White people good 4. Black people bad.
Results were obvious.
I donĀ“t think most Czechs have any association with black people at all, almost none live here, they are just not concern. Only time I saw blacks here in 40 years, was when I was visiting Prague and then one time when some come to my elementary school and played "African" music. (canĀ“t remember specifically from where, just remember lot of drums.
bebilov@reddit
I lived in Italy and I'd say although you might not find direct hate towards black people it's clearly imbedded into the social fabric. You always see black people doing less desired jobs in society and not many of them working in high level jobs as you see in the UK for example.
Alendro95@reddit
This is also because they are first or second-generation immigrants living in Italy. They have low level of education and prefer working over studying, which makes it difficult to attain high-level jobs.
bebilov@reddit
It has nothing to do with this. I went to university with Africans from Cameroon and Senegal who were smart young people and doing degrees like engineering or economics etc. 80/90% of them could not find a job after university and had to take jobs like cleaning or working in food delivery and this in northern Italy where there are the most opportunities in whole Italy. It's all about the perception Italians have of black people.
olivenoel3@reddit

As a Canadian, I hope Croatia stays on top of immigration and plans for it accordingly. Donāt due what our stupid government did.
chess_bot72829@reddit
So you are of native origin or did your ancestors immigrated to canada?
IndyCarFAN27@reddit
Not against immigration, however measures need to be put in place to control the rate of people coming in. You need enough houses, resources and jobs to go around. I was born here but my parents emigrated from Hungary. Iām a dual-citizen. Immigrants are welcome but weāve had way too many in too short of a time and itās completely overwhelmed the country. Cost of living has sky rocketed, we have a housing crisis, and an employment crisis, among more problems.
FigureTopAcadia@reddit
Hungary needs to sustain its population. Immigrants help it in that regard.
Stead-Freddy@reddit
The problem wasnāt immigration, thatās the scapegoat. The problem is that weāve allowed NIMBYs to take over our cities and slowed housing starts to a snails pace for the last 3-4 decades, with only a small uptick recently. We also completely stopped building social housing or below market government owned rentals.
chess_bot72829@reddit

IndyCarFAN27@reddit
Yes indigenous rights and reconciliation is a hot topic and always has been. Having lived and worked in one of these remote communities, I understand and emphasize with this problems, however this is much different. What indigenous people deal with this days is lack of resources, education, healthcare and social services. A lot of physical and emotional damage has been done from colonialism and the residential school system.

Deep_Requirement1384@reddit
It is sadly getting increasingly negative as they are being imported in insane amounts and treated like slave labour, lowering job market standards to which locals react with rapidly increasing racism.
Only reason why there was no racism previously is that there was no other skin colours so people just hated each other on local ethnicities

Brit here. Black children from the wave of migration in the 60ās integrated well in to British society. Chances are most people have met a black person who shares the same values and culture as them.
Before then, societal attitudes on the british empire was seen less as imperialism but more as a collaboration. Troops of different races fought in volunteer forces in the world wars too. This resulted in more positive sentiment toward foreigners compared to France or Germany for example.
Our issues today revolve more around different cultures rather than race. There are few people who want 0 immigration. Rather most on the right want more skill based rules for visas and to reduce immigration from countries who donāt contribute or assimilate.

Well... I can say with all responsibility that there is no racism in Belarus. And there never was. The very concept of racism in this country is considered something exotic.
But, but, but. There is absolutely extreme xenophobia in Belarus. It permeates the whole essence of social relations. The boundaries of friend and foe are diverse and complex, and resemble a cross-section of a croissant. In fact, everything is arranged in such a way that there is no single society in the generally accepted sense of the word.
But skin color or nationality are not some special object of hatred.

fjrushxhenejd@reddit
Itās hard to understand what ethnic means in the Balkans. In most other places it essentially means race.
Stverghame@reddit
"In most places" = In USA.
There is a clear distinction between race and ethnicity, it is just America's obsession with race that totally throws away all other things that can differntiate people within one race itself.
Present-Bandicoot578@reddit
Frrr lmao stupid ass americans
fjrushxhenejd@reddit
Well Iām not from USA. I had thought that ethnic in the Balkans just meant religion but you listed those as separate. Are you saying it means culture?
Stverghame@reddit
I meant ethnicity. Are you implying that somehow Romanians, Serbs and Greeks are the same just because they follow the same religion? That's certainly not the case.
fjrushxhenejd@reddit
Iām not implying anything Iām hoping you could explain the term to me.
Cold-Association6535@reddit
Serb here.
For example. Serbs, Romanians and Bulgarians are all separate ethnicities. We are all of the same religion (Orthodox Christian) and of the same race (white) or alternatively of separate but intermixed races since Serbs are mostly slavic, Romanians are half slavic Dacians and Bulgarians are slavicized turkic people.
While it's being of the same religion does cause some feelings of fraternity, them being the same color means jack shit to me. Germans and British are the same color as well and I'd like nothing more than everything west of Czechia to slide into the sea.
So as far is actual racial in group preference goes, there is SOME towards Slavs or partially Slavs, but most of them are rabbid pro westerners and are in my mind no greater brothers than for example Chinese or Cubans. We mostly have an integrative aspect of racism, since it's doesn't manifest through exclusion of other races like it does in the US but by a mild preference of those of the same one.
Basically all great evils to my people were done by other white people or other Slavs and my hatred is reserved for them. Average Congolese or a Somali simply doesn't register.
fjrushxhenejd@reddit
One other question - is it true that you wonāt consider someone a Serb anymore if they convert to a different religion?
Cold-Association6535@reddit
Personally, no. They are still Serbian unless they consider themselves otherwise.
Historically though, it's complicated. People who converted away did it explicitly to stop being Serbian and align with the nation that occupied their lands. Today, somebody converting doesn't mean he will be part of death squads when local Turkish noble decides to get some money and girls for his harem. Still, the sentiment is still present among many Serbs, because for centuries it was completely justified.
fjrushxhenejd@reddit
Right, that helps explain some things. I guess I never thought of Slavic as a race, but I know that Hitler did. Do you think thereās any chance of some kind of Balkan unity, or did that pretty much die with Tito?
From my understanding he had an unusual combination of being a Croat who fought against the UstaÅ”e, making him somewhat acceptable to Serbs and Croats. It seems that most Balkaners donāt view him favourably anymore - although I have met Serbs here in NZ who liked him and I certainly have a good view of him.
Stverghame@reddit
Here you go a definition offered by wikipedia:
An ethnicity or ethnic group is a group of people who identify with each other on the basis of perceived shared attributes that distinguish them from other groups. Neka_faca@reddit
What lol I have never once in my life heard anyone use that phrase, nor any insult towards any other Balkaners based on skin color, where did you get that info? Or do you just like talking out of your ass and shitting on Serbs for the sake of it? Especially considering that a lot of Serbs, especially from the south, are quite dark skinned and dark-haired and if anything, would often make fun of Slovenes and some Croatians for being blond/blue eyed/pale like the Germans..
Flashy-Association69@reddit
Serbs online do it quite a lot whether itās on Twitter or TikTok. If I had never seen it before, I wouldnāt have said it and just because youāve never seen that doesnāt mean itās never happened.
Neka_faca@reddit
Iāll take your word for it, I have never personally seen anything like that nor does it make any sense, since, as I said, a lot of Serbs are dark-skinned and dark-haired,especially in the south, and often make fun of light haired and blue eyed Balkaners (Iām light haired and blue eyed, so Iām talking out of experience) but I beleive you if you say you saw it on TikTok.. sounds more like trolling or a running gag though, like Karaboga Turks or something, otherwise it just doesnāt make any sense..

In the city of Užice, in western Serbia, quite a number of black people live among us, for a city of this size. A few are from the United States, most are from African countries (Two of them are football players, and one is a Kenyan athlete), and there are even a few born here, children of black men and women with their local spouses.
Also, you can often see young women wearing veils around the city, as Novi Pazar is nearby, and young women and man from there study here without any issues.
Additionally, my neighbor is an Albanian from Kosovo. Last year, he was physically attacked by a Dutchman (due to some unresolved personal issues between them), but the locals defended him and called the police.
There is also a large family from Honduras living among us. They came through the Catholic Church because the father is a pastor, and his children grew up here not only without any problems, not only without any issues, but the guys are actually quite popular with girls because of their exotic appearance.
Neka_faca@reddit
Why wouldnāt it be? The main point of conflict in the Balkans is ethnicity and religion, not skin color? If anything, Serbs always had a positive view of Africans and African-Americans, had a lot of economic and cultural cooperation and exchange with African countries during the Yugoslav-era, a lot of exchange students came during that time and some stayed and, on the hole, there hasnāt been much black people or immigration in Serbia for any (justified or unjustified) animosity to grow, so why would you expect Serbia out of all the Balkans to be racist? Or are you just that brainwashed by propaganda about big bad Serbs devouring children and commiting genocide for breakfast?
North_Resolution_450@reddit

vladedivac12@reddit
The Serbian 1835 constitution rejected slavery.
The Constitution explicitly bans slavery stipulating: āThe moment a slave steps onto Serbian ground he becomes free, as do those who brought him to or escaped with him into Serbiaā.
Also, during Communist Yugoslavia, after Tito distanced himself from Stalin and the USSR, he created a non aligned coalition with a lot of African countries. That created collaboration programs such as student exchanges, black African students were not uncommon in Belgrade in the 60-70-80s.

The map is inaccurate. Serbia received this result because in that country, other races, especially those with darker skin, are literally a rarity. I think this doesn't have any correlation with other races or ethnicities, from my experience people with darker skin or tanned, so just ordinary white Croatians with darker skin tend to be associated with being prettier and attractive
kingboz@reddit
Great example of how stats can be misrepresented. Every country had negative attitudes towards dark people, the green countries were just less so than the red.
I'm not surprised that the Balkans is less so than others, we seem to use all our energy on caring about someone's religion.

Adventurous-Pause720@reddit
Technically, this was from the 2004 riots.
Still_Refrigerator76@reddit
If you respect other religions you respect them. I understand doing that out of spite, but many of them were historical heritage from the byzantine empire. Serbs destroyed about 235 mosques, while the Albanians destroyed 154 religious objects in return.
I don't see any side having clean hands at that time.
olivenoel3@reddit
Oh, you even have numbers there! Well considering how serbian oc denies the genocides/ethnic cleansings I don't see any reason why it should be respected by Albanians! And again this was a one time case and related to an ethnic conflict. We are not religious extremists is what I originally meant.
Still_Refrigerator76@reddit
You cannot paint an entire nation by the actions of individuals. As i know many orthodox and catholic Albanians were upset about the destruction of christian monasteries across Kosovo.
olivenoel3@reddit
Well, it was the nation who undertook those actions. Supported by the church!
Can confirm neither me nor the orthodox I knew cared any little about them.Ā

slimNshadyHLM@reddit
Several days ago I saw a Europe map presenting percentages of people thinking their culture is more superior than others and Greece had the winning percentage. Assuming that to be true, it could lead to looking down on others with inferior culture and to racism.
Anyway this is just my personal opinion and I'm not sure it is true.
-BarrenWuffett@reddit
Romania ranked the second or third on that list. So going by your own logic, Romanians arenāt that far off from Greeks in terms of racism. Now Iām not saying this is false or true, Iām just pointing out how stupid the premise of your argument is.
Thinking your culture is superior ā muh racism
Do you think that Balkan cultures are superior to cultures that view women as subhuman and mutilate their genitalia, systematically oppress them etc or is it too racist for you even acknowledge the fact that not all cultures are equal?
Aggressive_Limit2448@reddit
I don't believe either however Greece was more open and not socialist.

During communist era, many people from arab states like Syria, Egypt, Libya etc. came to study in Romania because we had agreements with these countries.

The prime minister of Vietnam studied in Bucharest back in the 80s.
So yeah i don't think it has something to do with socialism/communism specifically.
LibertyChecked28@reddit
Socialism isn't the cause for racism, the USSR had international "acceptence" programs ment to make people more open mided towards other ethnicities and nationalities from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
If something Greece never had any real reason to become "inclusive" as their gov model durring the 70's was xenophobic af.

Former Yugoslavia's outlook is in large part due to being part of the Unaligned Movement during the Cold War.
That was then though. For Slovenia at least, I don't think the outlook is especially positive. More often than not the only dark skinned people Slovenes encounter are darker-skinned Roma, and that's a whole different can of worms.
We did have that one mayor from Ghana, not sure how that happened. But that's Prekmurje, attitudes might be different there.
