The feature I miss from flat-forums: long discussions

That's something I have only realized recently despite it being kind of obvious: on old phpBB flat forums (which I personally do not regret as much as other do) you were often browsing by "recent messages" or "active discussion"
On reddit, when you do back and forth with someone for a day or two, quickly no one else reads it or partakes in it.
It would not be a huge difficulty I think to order posts and comments by "active discussion" and would greatly increase the ability to have in-depth discussions. Is there a reddit alternative that proposes that feature?

On GoatMatrix I've added it as a weight to the sort algo. You get to pick the weights of your sort algo completely. Age, score, "bump" (what you are referring to, and proximity (likeness to other things you've liked).
I want to add comment count too to keep the high discussion threads alive even longer on the default sort.
With those options you can basically make the sort algo of any other site.

It’s not just the long discussion by itself…it’s the personalities that would shine through and ultimately take center stage when debating or discussing a topic. It became a sort of public form of…man, I want to say pen pals. SMEs would write PAGES of content disputing each other or doing deep dives. It was nuts and also wonderful.

Yes pen pals, that's a bit like that indeed.
The problem was that it was an intimidating culture to get into when you have established personalities, so I don't mind the nested discussion format also existing.

I've been there, and I feel you! You can form real, long-lasting relationships. Topics could go on for decades. It's something else. I just launched Fan Clubs and I'm hoping to recapture that magic with it.
If you check it out, here are a few new topics that have that long-term potential.

The "New comments" filter on Lemmy allows to have discussions going over days or weeks. 42k monthly active users
Die4Ever@reddit
I have a widget on my phone's home screen to show Subscribed+New Comments, it's pretty cool to see older posts pop up with new activity
FanClubs_org@reddit
That's a brilliant idea!

That's nice !

I am using lemmy and was not aware of that feature! Thanks!
(You can add jlai.lu for french speakers)
BlazeAlt@reddit
Yes, I am aware of jlai.lu and feddit.org etc., but I try to limit the list to two options to avoid overwhelming people.
Ratefuls@reddit
I agree! I’ve added it to discuo

I’m 1000% with you. That’s exactly what I’m doing with FanClubs.org. Time to bring back the golden age, but modernized 😎

What forum software are you using? Or is it completely custom?
FanClubs_org@reddit
I’m using Invision Community. Can’t recommend them enough.

Interesting... If I was going to opt for "off the shelf" forum software, I would personally go with Xenforo... Which runs Neogaf and Resetera.
Unfortunately however, I have a WordPress site, and have absolutely no intention of breaking compatibility with its plugins.
FanClubs_org@reddit
I looked into xenforo as well, but Invision Community was a better fit for the type of community I wanted to build.
I started on Wordpress as well, using the ultimate member plugin and tested a few others, but just couldn’t do what I wanted with it, so migrated to IC a few years back.

Forums.somethingawful.com still exist.

I wish their app was more intuitive

I just use their website.
