They were a rogue state never actually recognized by the rest of the world which means they couldn't buy anything better. Despite making up more than 80% of the country indigenous Africans held zero political power because white European colonizers kept it all to themselves. The native Africans tried to make reforms peacefully and got killed for their trouble, and you know what happens when peaceful change is made impossible. Violent change becomes inevitable.
