Prepping for Tuesday: Picked up a power failure alarm for my chest freezer

I live in a split/shared dwelling, and my chest freezer actually is powered from a shared breaker in the detached garage. I have an outlet in the house which is on that breaker and that's where my freezer is.
In the past, my 'neighbor' tripped that breaker and I didn't realize until everything in my chest freezer was thawed out. $20ish later and I now have an alarm on the outlet to let me know if power is out.
I do a lot of bbq, vacuum seal and freeze it. Also, catch things like pork shoulder on sale and freeze it.
Anyway, I hadn't thought of one of these power alarms in the past, but it's great to have.

Wife bought one of these for her breast milk with my youngest and it’s connected via Bluetooth. Saved us a few times when we lost power (and potentially all the milk) during an outage. Highly recommended and like yours, it was not expensive at all.

Any chance you could share the details on that alarm? Having some troubles with the models we've been picking.

The brand we have is Govee. Not sure what the model or anything is. Hope that helps!

I just turned on my first deep freezer yesterday...will pick up an alarm.
Got a link for the one you picked?

I just picked on on amazon that seemed to have decent reviews. Looks like it's $25.

For not much more money, you can get one that goes by temperature and will also send a notification to your phone. I think it's better because power going out isn't the only reason a freezer can fail but the one you linked is definitely better than nothing

We use a system like this to manage 4 different freezers. It's nice to get a notice on the phone when temperatures go out of range but are still well below freezing. It gives you plenty of time to deal with a failing freezer.

Ah nice, true. I'll look into those as well.

Thanks for the link. Will add to my preps

I just got it last week, so I can't say if it's a good one lol. Let's hope it is :)

I use a Govee temp sensor that connects to WiFi or Bluetooth. Sends me a little push alert if the freezer goes out or if if the temp goes into the danger zone.
I put one in the fridge too and it caught my fridge door being left open just enough that the fridge wasn’t beeping but the door wasn’t sealed
DoubleDistance3189@reddit
so, they work?
I wouldn't suspect the wifi would be reliable inside a giant metal box....?
PrepperBoi@reddit
It works just fine in the freezers. The one in my gun safe doesn’t consistently connect to Bluetooth but the WiFi works.

I use the Gover Sensors as well. Happy with them so far.

If you are not going to be home for when the alarm goes off, but need to know if there was a power outage long enough to thaw your food, then you can put o penny on top of an ice cube in the freezer. If you come home and find the penny inside the ice cube that means it melted enough for the penny to sink.

I've got a govee and am currently experimenting to see how long my outside freezer stays below 30 after unplugging it. It was at 0 degrees at 6:30 pm and now, 42 hours later, it's only up to 20.8 degrees. When it hits 30, I'll plug it back in and test the garage freezer.

Did not know this existed. Ty!

I use a wireless thermometer in the freezer. Power failure alarm doesn't cover when you think you closed the freezer door and it's left slightly ajar due to something in the wrong place.

How do you like the govee app? I've seen a couple of other sensors from them but really don't want to add to the number of apps and ecosystems I have to manage.

Someone kicked or pulled our kitchen freezer's plug one Christmas party. That was when I added the alarm to the freezer.

That's an awesome idea.
