Will Britain end up like Yugoslavia?

What do people from the Balkans think of Britain at the moment?
As someone born and raised here, the country is in a bad way at the moment.
branimir2208@reddit
No. UK lasted for 300 years and it was stable for long time.
ISV_VentureStar@reddit
It was stable for those 300 years because it was an empire that prospered by exploiting millions of people across the world
You won't get many rebellions and revolutions when doing so means losing access to your colonies.
Aq8knyus@reddit
So own India and then that translates into domestic stability?
Surely an already established domestic stability would be one factor that empowered Britain to conquer the world.
Britain’s empire doubled between 1700-1815 mostly as a result of being on the right side coalitions against France. But it still didn’t reach a truly great extent until the latter part of the 19th century.
The Empire wasn’t ruled as a single country either. Colonies had a variety of relationships with London. Even in India, 43% of the Raj was ruled by native rulers. Ireland was only annexed to the British state in 1801.
The Kingdom of England is over 1000 years old and Scotland is even older. Both states were highly centralised and have resisted full scale foreign conquest since 1066. That is the foundation of the later British state’s stability.

"an already established domestic stability would be one factor that empowered Britain to conquer the world."
THIS
If you don't have a stable core you cannot project power.
branimir2208@reddit
Having an empire is costly and could hurt stability. I mean Salazars regime in Portugal fell because of colonialism.
You could have revolutions and rebelions with or without an empire.
British stability comes from integration and longevity of the state and its institutions.
big_cat112@reddit
Why would Britain end up like Yugoslavia though? I know the economy is not doing very well but why?
Otherwise-Pop-1311@reddit (OP)
country is divided after southport riots and the new prime minister
Infinite_Crow_3706@reddit
New PM, as little as I like him, was elected in July 2024 with a huge majority. Landslide victory.
Riots happen periodically, Southport wasnt the first and won't the last.
There have always been divisions in Britan and always will be. Yet, the country will endure and likely outlast many in Europe.
Vladan_Guzica_II@reddit
Could you explain this a bit?
Otherwise-Pop-1311@reddit (OP)
Musk is interfering with the elections and causing conflict
WestConversation5506@reddit
Not to mention Elon musk is trying to play with British politics on social media.
Old-Temperature9049@reddit
Here in Britain nobody cares for him and nobody buys his shit cars.
Vladan_Guzica_II@reddit
Thx, tho I was curious what's the deal with Starmer and the riots.
Otherwise-Pop-1311@reddit (OP)
The perpetrator was known to police beforehand
stalino2023@reddit
What? Starmer legally represented his father, a war criminal from Rwanda? Where this information come from?
Otherwise-Pop-1311@reddit (OP)

Vladan_Guzica_II@reddit
Starmer never seemed like an honest person to me. Its a pity how Labour got sold.
Impossible_Speed_954@reddit
That's a new hobby of his.
Old-Temperature9049@reddit
Not really. They are a tiny minority. Right-wing protests are a shit show. Where I live there were 100 bullies attacking asylum seekers' hotel and a few thousand people of all religions, colours and backgrounds turned up every time to defend asylum seekers. Britain is not overwhelmingly racist and right-wing for Tommy Robinson as they try to present. They are a fringe crazy lot. Normal British people don't buy that shit.
Plastic_Lemon3728@reddit
So many countries are.
Fit-Factor-4789@reddit
Doubt it.
Even if Scotland achieves independence, they will still be a part of a unified British state in a Personal Union under the Stuart/Mountbatten dynasty.
(There's a argument from them becoming a republic and doing a hard border, but I don't see how that's economically feasible in the near future)
Irish unification though is only a matter of time. Funnily enough the main brake is Dublin. They just don't want to deal with a hardline Protestant minority in the North if they can just ignore it.
2024-2025@reddit
If you mean end up as in England, wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland separating? Then no, it will be more like Czechoslovakia
If you mean as in whites vs immigrants, then again no, then it will end up like either Haiti or Nazi Germany depending who will win.
Front-Blood-1158@reddit
If you are referring to those violent events in 90s in Balkans, these are extreme for UK actually. Too extreme, too much. There are some tensions in Northern Ireland afaik, but other than that, it is not possible. But economically, it will be worse than Bulgaria.
Rich criminals and rich criminal politicians fill their pockets, and rest of the country will try to survive in UK. Deprivation of UK can be seen by a naked eye, just look at the seaside towns or northern cities, hell, even southern cities and London. I went to London last week, if you go out from the central areas, which are those rich criminals and rich politicians live, you see a lot of deprivation. I just saw a bike has thrown off to a river in Brent Cross, and I saw a lot of litters on the side of roads.
That's what Thatcher and 17 years of austerity did, making UK as a third world country. If not, UK is started to becoming as a third world country. So, UK will end up in the economical way, rather than the violent way.
TheEverlastingFirst_@reddit
Western Europeans are insane and trying to import hordes of people who hate them, i have never seen a people defend some of the shit that goes on
WestConversation5506@reddit
It was an attempt to fill the low skilled jobs and mitigate the risk of population decline. In Japan and some asian countries they are trying to do the same. I’m not sure though why it isn’t getting as much media coverage as migrants coming to Europe do.
TheEverlastingFirst_@reddit
Id rather live in a dump with my people than sell out my nation so the gdp rises .3% in a multicultural hell
WestConversation5506@reddit
Yeah same, not auguring for pro-multiculturalism but western Europe kind of misunderstood the mentality/culture of some ethnic groups. It’s foolish to expect the majority of immigrants to assimilate or even adopt to some level of a foreign culture.
SerboBosnianCroat@reddit
They saw the Germans and Scandinavians successfully assimilate into Anglo culture in America, and thought we can do that with non-europeans here in the UK!
AllMightAb@reddit
I cant understand this as well.
Old-Temperature9049@reddit
Asylum seekers don't hate English people. Where do you get this idea? I live in a pretty multicultural city in the UK as a woman from Yugoslavia. I don't see the hate either way - These Tommy Robinson clowns get beaten in every city in UK. They are a minority and not a view of your average person in UK.
Now in every country in the world, you will have these men with tiny dicks who walk around hating on other religions and races. They are not what Britain is about and Musk will get a message soon. His shit don't fly here.
Objective_Two_7494@reddit
Where about a do you live mate?
Old-Temperature9049@reddit
I used to live in Tottenham, London. Then Salisbury. Then Cardiff. Then Bristol last 6 years.
Objective_Two_7494@reddit
Go to Oldham or Bradford then you’ll see
Old-Temperature9049@reddit
Sure there are areas of England where there is a right-wing culture but they are pockets. They are what I call a minority. They have a right to speak their mind but they get out-voted or if they try hurting someone - they will get the other end of the stick. People don't need Starmer and his ministers to fix the the extreme right. It's because they don't have any actual numbers or power in UK. Starmer is useless for left or right.
Overseer93@reddit
I think it is a country built on slavery and plundering people all around the globe. Today, it is an important component of the Western imperialist system. The world will be better off if it disintegrates.
olivenoel3@reddit
You mean if the british will start genociding the pakis there like serbs did with bosniaks?
Otherwise-Pop-1311@reddit (OP)
will they?
Key_Tea_7414@reddit
Massively overestimating Musk's pull in this situation.
olivenoel3@reddit
Well Musk is far right, so we know who their targets are
kositi8@reddit
Or like Siptari in Kosovo. Or as always Muslim start war.
olivenoel3@reddit
I don't think, the british are stupid enough to get bombed by NATO, shkavell
New-Interaction1893@reddit
I don't expect riots and war, but a Scotland indipendence referendum that is pushed in as a protest against the will of UK and that it even get more than 50% it's all the realms of possibilities.
EmperorBarbarossa@reddit
Absolutely not. And only reason is simple, England absolutely dominate Union. London has even greater population than Scotland or Wales. In the Yugoslavia, there was tension between Serbia and Croatia and other states which everyone wanted to leave or be the bigger dog, but there were several large population centers far from each other, which encourages separatism when country is already made of different nations. England has more than 80% of population in the union, meanwhile Serbia had something over 30% in the federation. This disproportion is something which keep Wales and Scotland, which are even economically largely dependant on the England in the Union, even there can be heard more or less loud separation tendencies.
SageMitso@reddit
Probably not. At the end of the day, they're all pretty much british now. They speak the same language, no longer speaking their own languages. Cant really see them breaking apart. Would be pretty funny though if they did, and all started fighting about being different peoples when there isn't much difference between them other then the way they speak English.
ResidentLong1032@reddit
Not sure. People of GB have a long history of living together and I think they are one society.
Yugoslavia was misunderstood by most foreigners. There was never something like yugoslavian political society. The people of Yugoslavia never lived together until after WW1.
Yugoslavia was formed after WW1 and failed almost immediately. After 9 years the most prominent Croatian politician was killed in the parliament, after 10 years the king proclaimed dictatorship, after 15 years that kind was dead.
All this was happening in a time where dissolution of Yugoslavia would immediately pose greatest problems for the member states as neighbors like Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria really wanted to change borders back then. It happened in spite of that.
Then after WW2 there were no democratic elections and even so, the communist didn't have one party but 8 different parties, one per republic and per autonomous region. And even under this system, Tito constantly had to coordinate those different communist parties and send their leaders to jail for trying to accomplish their national agenda.
Then the West expected YU to find a way into parliamentary democracy, which was absolutely utopian. There could never be any normal political activities or discussions in normal left-center-right frame; any political questions, be it sexual rights, economy or ecology, every question would have to be solved by different coalitions between the nations. On one question the Croats and Slovenes would go against the rest, on another Serb and Croats would go against the rest, on a third Serbs would make coalition with Slovenes against the Croats and somebody else, and I am not even considering the rest. An absolute chaos. That is what I mean when I say Yugoslavia was never one unified political society.
I think GB is much more unified or at least there is much more experience and historical knowledge how to deal with all the parts.
Otherwise-Pop-1311@reddit (OP)
thank you
kositi8@reddit
I don't think so.
floegl@reddit
I think the split is inevitable, followed by rejoining the EU eventually as separate countries.

loleenceee@reddit
More like Czechoslovakia maybe
Old-Temperature9049@reddit
Nope. Why do you think it will?
I was born in Yugoslavia and grew up in all the countries of ex-Yugoslavia apart from Kosovo and Macedonia. I have lived in England, for just over a decade. Still here. I don't see Britain being in a bad way to be concerned. Right-wing Reform and people on that line and worse claim Britain is scrapping by and all that...but truly? It was way worse during Thatcher and at other times. Prime ministers are always being the target of attacks. Now I am not a fan of Starmer and the situation after Brexit but still, it's far away from the situation in post-communist Yugoslavia. I am angry over Britain's alliance with Israel especially how servile the Labour party is but I guess we will have to exert more pressure to cut those ties.
alpidzonka@reddit
What? No? If there's a mass outbreak of violence it will be on racial boundaries. Not England vs. Scotland and Wales. At worst, I can see more of a Third Reich situation than a Yugoslavia situation frankly
arhisekta@reddit
it would be the funniest thing ever, but i dont think so, the power that england has over other constituents cannot compare to serbia and the rest of yugoslavia
IK417@reddit
Doubt they will end up killing each other.
janesmex@reddit
I think it’s unlikely since they are more stable.
Aggressive_Limit2448@reddit
No. SFRY was artificial socialist federation. It was made up with no real history of common borders and ethnicities. Also it was non proportionally developing. And it's shadows and ghosts still like after 35 years.
Frederico_de_Soya@reddit
Hope it does, but realistically not likely. English might become minority in their own country or that definition of English changes over time.
Dim_off@reddit
No. Because they have a long lasting monarchical tradition. Yugoslavia hasn't been long lasting enough in comparison

Hopefully. Scottish lads should spank the english donkeys.

No, it might disintegrate but it certainly won't be in the way Yugoslavia did.
