Does chewing gum regurarly really strengthen your jawline ?

I have heard mixed opinions on this. I have neen chewing gum almost daily for a few months and I can kinda see some results but I am not too sure of it.
BSforgery@reddit
Not much out there on this. What do we know.
1) https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1034/j.1600-0722.2001.00991.x
Tells us that a normal healthy person is able to recover from all chewing gum chewing easily
2) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0915699211001087
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0883073815575575
While it does benefit using chewing gum as physical therapy and exercise for those with impairments of the jaw structure or muscles, it still seems to have no effect for healthy individuals.
3) A informed wild conclusion in true MB style this one is Busted. Even that old Double Bubble softens faster than your jaw gets tired. But I would still wonder about beef jerky.
Although the producers would have said to call it plausible so we could make an episode where we revisited it as well as beef jerky. Since there is synthetic and natural gum as well as different sugar types and chewing vs bubble, wax paper storage vs foiled….. oh the spin offs!

They’re wrong. First, looking at the study, specifically the sage pub one: they only observed them for a month, and even in that month they noticed an increase in bite force. It takes longer than a month to see significant change; try 6 months.
Anecdotally, I’ve been body building for years and I can safely say one’s jaw muscles aren’t that different from any other muscles on your body that you have conscious control over.
I have not only gained muscle in my body, but I’ve also strengthened my jawline by making sure to chew a lot more. Just like the rest of your body, you see the most significant results in 2 years, and after that it’s diminishing returns.
salutationsfriend@reddit
Your jaw became more chiseled and defined?
Organic-Contract3114@reddit
Yeah when I really look at a attractive side profile what makes it "pop" is the muscles on the side of the face.
Big-Face379@reddit
Big muscles also correlate to a well developed jaw, good looking jaw(basically you can achieve hard tissue improvent with chewing)
Big-Face379@reddit
Also if young you can actually build more bone in the jaw, there are surgerys that give similar results but nothing is as good as chewing
Omnipopimp@reddit
Nope, just use progressive overload like any other muscle group. The results lessen but it's on par with what arm wrestlers go through. Tiny increments in progression that tip you over 98% of chewies. That's what we "Masseters Of The Universe" call beginners...."chewies." OK, none of that last part was true but it just felt so right.
Bhosda-MaroGAY@reddit
That jawline is like that cuz u ajuicer man, your butt isnfilled with injection sites. I kniw cuz I helped you in tje first place
LRsaid@reddit
Chewing gum increases saliva production which helps flush out food debris, which helps against cavities. However, chewing gum all the time is hard on your Temporalmandibular joint , which is not good for you. The TMJ is pretty delicate, and can cause headaches, jaw pain, and that not so fun clicking when you open your mouth.
So tldr chewing (sugar free) gum occasionally after you eat is good. Chewing gum all the time is not good.

How much is all the time? Im trying to build up my jaw muscles and also chew when I study (after finding out chewing can help with memory). Half a pack a day? A pack a day?
Euphoric-Cycle1688@reddit
wtf are these questions ? Try it for yourself, this is the best answer you can get. Listen to your body
TDragon_21@reddit
A question asking to specificy what "all the time" means exactly from a professional in said field. "The TMJ is pretty delicate, and can cause headaches, jaw pain, and that not so fun clicking when you open your mouth." Id rather have a guideline of how much to chew than to chew too much and for it to *click* and never be back to normal again. Its called being cautious.
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
If you don't believe me (valid), look at ancient human skulls. These people had perfect teeth, wide faces, and had reached their genetic potentials in terms of jaw structure. They also chewed hard foods for several hours a day, EVERY day. If they had no issues, then we shouldn't either. Our jaws have not evolved to become worse and make breathing and chewing more difficult. There is a reason 20% of the population has sleep apnea and even more are mouth breathers and snorers. It isn't our genetics that have changed, but our diets and our postural habits have changed very significantly, for the worse. Chewing is very very healthy so do not shy away from it, however make sure to gradually up the duration, and to also focus on correcting your entire body and tongue posture.
nutsack-enjoyer5431@reddit
Really like this answer. It may sound boomer-ish but really, I think modern society is being too delicate on our body, that our physicality has literally changed to be weaker and more fragile.
Ok-Seaweed281@reddit
You got me interested, you got any literature or videos to show what’s good chewing posture? I’ve started clenching my jaw a lot and have been using big league chew to break the habit since it last so long but my jaw is killing me so I was wondering if I was doing more harm than good
Big-Face379@reddit
Clenching isnt good, chewing on the other hand, atleast when young, give you a fucking good looking jaw, so get your kids on a hard diet atleast

Then explain why people with bad bruxism (clenching of teeth at night while sleeping) have big meaty strong jaws, but it softens mo ths later if they stop doing it?
WBossK@reddit
Has nothing to do with a pack a day. I bought legit hard chewing gum online and then because I don’t care about taste I’d chew that same piece and add another too it to chew throughout the day. My shit would be super sore. I do think my jaw muscles were stronger but same time my jaw was clicking all the time and i had headaches all the time.
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
As long as your tongue strength matches that of your masseters, then you can chew as much as you like. The key is to keep things balanced. The tongue is the antagonist to the jaw closing muscles and also acts to push the jaw up and forwards. It's important to keep good body posture throughout the whole day, and to also make sure that your tongue is on the roof of your mouth all the time except talking or eating. Make sure it's there when you swallow too; no other facial muscles but your tongue should be used when swallowing correctly.
Ok-Seaweed281@reddit
Holy crap I’m learning so much, so I should be keeping my tongue touching the roof of my mouth all the time? How do I work out my tongue?

Yeah but I can chew gum all day with no issues at all ever. Only time I got clicking was when I tried chisel.
Responsible-Tear-485@reddit
My clicking never went away
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
Clicking is usually caused by a muscular imbalance in your face. Try to fix your overall body posture, your tongue posture (flat on the roof of your mouth but not exerting much pressure), but do not stop eating hard foods either (but do chew evenly on both sides). Eventually, your assymetries and jaw imbalances will be reduced to the point where you no longer get clicking. This worked well for me although I do still grind my teeth at night, I was still able to get rid of my clicking jaw.
Responsible-Tear-485@reddit
Thank for the reply I'm going try this I appreciate it
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
No problem. Be patient, and you'll eventually (hopefully) get rid of your clicking. The orthotropics youtube channel is also a good help.
AdDependent7177@reddit
this is 100% accurate bc idk how, but fixing my posture and tongue placement has helped the clicking in my jaw. its not all the way gone but a lot better
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
Yeah. It's great.
AdDependent7177@reddit
im trying to grow my jaw due to bone loss of getting my wisdom teeth out. do u have any tips for growing your jaw?
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
Not much advice to give except that you should be chewing as much as you can, and hard food. Muscle use will reverse bone loss. Bones get denser with the use of the muscles on them.
AdDependent7177@reddit
thank you :). I just bought this gum called "stronger gum" its supposed to help build up the muscles in your jaw, so hopefully that works!
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
Try and eat as much hard meat as possible.
Hiphopstan123@reddit
does clicking occurs on the stronger or weaker side, just asking to see which side i should chew on
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
in all honesty, I'm not sure. But DO NOT focus more one side. That's some shit advice that lotta people give out. You have to chew evenly and eventually, both sides WILL even out. Chewing on one side will fuck you up long-term. Don't do it, especially because it doesnt work.
Hiphopstan123@reddit
but like i accidently spammed gum on my left side for about 5 months until i found out my right jaw seems so underdeveloped compared to the left, should i spam gum on my right side or chew both evenly
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
No. Just chew evenly. Trust.
Hiphopstan123@reddit
but like its logical to train your weak side to match the stronger side right
btw, its got bad to the point where my left side looks angular and right side looks round, my right eye is a bit lower as well i think
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
Still. Chewing more one side can mess with your jaw joints and make the problem worse. It isn't worth the risk in my opinion. If you wanna do it though it's your call. Just be aware of the risks assosciated.
Hiphopstan123@reddit
k thx for the advice bro

Technical_Volume_667@reddit
The TMJ is NOT delicate. It's just that vast majority of people tend to have very poor body, neck and oral posture (tongue, lips, teeth). If the TMJ was delicate, ancient humans wouldn't have been able to chew for several hours a day, every single day.
bbornfilms@reddit
came here to agree with this. TMJ is very tough, there's just other factors at play. I've been chewing Falim gum, mewing, and working on my tongue strength. My migraines and headaches have gone away
Technical_Volume_667@reddit
Yeah. It really helps with symptoms. Avoiding chewing, I feel, is not a solution.

WBossK@reddit
Last time I was using hard chewing gum all the time that exact thing happened. I’d get crazy headaches and my jaw was clicking all the time
sincd5@reddit
you aren't supposed to be doing it all the time. primal humans would have chewed very difficult foods, but over a relatively short period (however long it took to finish their meal). So for hard gums you should really only do it for half an hour max.
Puzzleheaded_Meat963@reddit
No
Gaming_and_Football@reddit
Yes, absolutely.
Firstly it grows your massater muscle, which helps to define and widen your jawline.
Chewing has pretty big effects on the development of the mandibular bone and ramus length
https://academic.oup.com/ejo/article/32/1/66/507786
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-24293-3#Sec13
Basically the smaller the masseters, the shorter the ramus, while the bigger the masseters were, the larger the ramus and a more longer and "rectangular" the jawline.
https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Masseter-Activity%2C-Arch-Width-and-Facial-Type-Dr.-Chandralekha/b82c636cf1eb600eff326f2d6c1cf3089315099a?p2df
More masseter thickness is correlated with wider dental arch width, more horizontal growth of the face.
Ambitious_Pin9451@reddit
Jo Bro if you’re still there, in the first study, they said that the best diet was HSD, so in other words, the Hard soft diet. So we shouldn’t eat soft food but also not hard food all the time? Then that means I shouldn’t Mastic gum often or what? What do you thin?

I'm not sure about it improving the Jawline, but here are other noteworthy benefits of chewing gum. It also burns a small amount of calories it's a minor benefit, however, when compared to the ones listed below.
One surprisingly simple yet impactful technique is chewing gum. This method not only offers a momentary diversion from the daily grind but also promotes relaxation through its rhythmic motion and sensory engagement. As one chews, the mind begins to shift away from pressing concerns, allowing for a brief mental reset that can enhance overall productivity.
Research has shown that chewing gum can have physiological benefits, such as increased blood flow to the brain and improved cognitive function. These effects can lead to heightened alertness.

NotABadVoice@reddit
yes you can.
Omnipopimp@reddit
Anyone who needs studies to believe that daily chewing of hard substances will strengthen one's bite really has no business commenting on anything strength related. The masseter is the second strongest muscle after the heart. Go ahead and clench your jaw and feel the muscle. You feel that? Yeah, that thing you feel is the masseter muscle being built different. Trust me you wish all your muscles were as dense as that. Growth? I'm sure some must occur. But strength? Absolutely no question at all strength will occur. Show me studies that show bite force and conditioning doesn't increase with even chewing gum daily. Of course it does.
jukkala@reddit
Problem is, your chewing muscles are in your cheeks, not along your jawline. Most of the chewing muscles are in your cheeks and neck.
udontknowmiii@reddit
idk about the effects over a few months, but I've been chewing gum for YEARS (paranoid about bad breath lol) and I mean...I'd chew gum from breakfast time till I came home in the evening, every day (unless I was out of gum).
I wouldn't say I have a chad jawline, but for a female, my jaw has become more angular. And in the area where women would normally put contour, a slight divot has developed (like a long dimple under my cheekbone and above my jaw muscle. It casts a slight shadow, making my face look even more angular). I haven't lost or gained any weight so I can only attribute it to my gum habit.
note: also, I don't have any jaw clicking issues or TMJ disorders from this, but I'd be careful with excessive gum anyways (not good for your enamel in the long run)
Defiant-Speed-529@reddit
one year after but yeah i also chewed a lot of gum in highschool bc a friend telled me to do so ( 3 to 2 gums per week) , result was very good i had my right jaw very sharp with a big jaw muscle comming out ( helped alot to do the sigma face meme to make friends laugh) but my left side has a weak jaw not defined at all bc i chewed on only the right side , so yeah it give a lot of results ( of course beign fit help a lot )
Bunnipom@reddit
Ive only chewed on my left side for the last year and my right side is skinnier than my right side . Do I have to chew for a year on my left to make it balance?
RedDevil9er@reddit
It can exercise some of the muscles around the jaw and face is all, it won't change the bone. The skull shrinks anyway as people age, it's one of the main causes of ageing in the face, it's not just about skin, muscle and fat. The orbits grow, the cheekbones and nasal bone reduce, as does the jawbone, including the bones in the gums - even with perfect teeth and dental hygiene. Chewing gum is good for staving off hunger for a while, and another good use is to warm your face up if you're out in the cold, like at an outdoor sporting event where you might be sat down.
ALKD7@reddit
using mastic gum or a hard gum 2 hours a day will make jawline look sharper. just do not overly exhaust yours jaws
PitaDragon@reddit
A lot of these people need to lose 20+ pounds before they worry about gum. Magic gum! Wait! Why don’t you just use the jaw defining serum. I use it there times a week and many have commented how they never noticed my perfect jaw line! I sell it. DM and I’ll give it to you at cost!
ALKD7@reddit
yeah thats 100% true. I probably should have wrote that in my comment. The best way to get a jawline is to be in a healthy weight range and ideally within a low body fat percentage.
PitaDragon@reddit
Of course someone downvoted my comment which is exactly why the Redditors want to focus in on one part of the body. I know because I have been just like they. The experts tell you the body works together. I had a rotor cuff injury for five year and the physical therapist made it worse. Should I work harder o their methods and keep skin it worse no I stoped going. Watched 2@ YouTube videos and one stood out. He said you are going about it the wrong way. Forget about your rotary cuff. Lie on a bench. I surf my long bathroom sink. Lift four pound weights. It’s harder Dr than you think. Do ten like up to your head. Ten to the side and ten behind you. Three sets a day and increase numbers when it gets too easy. You are only working your BACK muscles. They help you lift everything. A month letter I was doing two of three shoulder press’s with 50 pounds I am up to 15. My rotator cuff does hurt. I am using my back muscles to help lift properly. My neck looks much better. Throwing a little gum. Get everything going. Leg 🦵 lifts. Oh shit my neck looks tighter. But I have been ignoring it. Oh Ian eating bet. If I could do one more press of 50 lbs a week. Then I’ll be at 25 shoulder presses the second week of June. Now I sm in the habit and my neck looks younger. Just ignore it.

Do you really need to ask Reddit for something that requires common sense?
What next? Does exercising make your muscles bigger?
PitaDragon@reddit
Common sense is don’t believe anything you read on Reddit. These people are bat shit crazy. 🤪
MouthBweether@reddit
Nope. Chewing gum all the time is going to give you TMJ
FonkyChonkDaddio@reddit
^ I have tmj, and gum is my enemy
AstronomicTimTam6@reddit
have you tried using proper tongue posture (mewing) and seen if that will fix it?
Acrobatic_Bid9077@reddit
So I have had TMJ for years and literally nothing fixed it, not mewing and not anything else. I was supposed to get surgery but my parents never went through with it because they were scared it was going to ruin my face, now I'll have to do it myself once i have enough money... thanks mom and dad. (I was 12 when I first developed TMJ, now I am 19)
AstronomicTimTam6@reddit
How bad is the sensation of clicking and what is the kind of pain level do you experience out of 10? Ive had TMJ issues before but nothing too major and was essentially fixed by correct tongue posture and slowly chewing more harder foods.
Acrobatic_Bid9077@reddit
To be honest, clicking is not as bad anymore. It used to happen every single time I opened my mouth but now it happens like a few times a day.
Jazzlike-Ad-9130@reddit
Chewing gum did tone my face in my experience and kept it slim and gave me a chiseled jaw line

LittleYachtLit@reddit
Did u chew 1 gum at a time?,did u chew on both side or one for a few mins and switch? How long before u saw results cause I bought like a year worth of gum today.
Maximum_Silver7259@reddit
Start off by chewing 1 or 2 gums then move up to 3-4 and then 5-6. The more gum you the more your jaw muscles need to move to chew it.
LittleYachtLit@reddit
How many times u chew gum
8Gh0st8@reddit
It sounds plausible at least, and I'm sure it would heavily depend on the amount of hours you're awake for and actively chewing. My bit of anecdotal evidence to add: I can't ever remember a time where my jaw felt like it was getting a workout from chewing gum; trying to eat a bowl of raisin-bran crunch™ cereal at a normal breakfast pace is torture to my jaw muscles — I don't know if it's the raisins or if its the crunch, but I have to chew that stuff s l o w l y and relax between bites, which sucks because then the cereal gets soggy.
_YourAverageRedditor@reddit (OP)
Actually I feel my jaw getting worked out but that's because I keep chewing gum for an hour or two
AstronomicTimTam6@reddit
sorry for reviving a dead post but about a year ago i started chewing gum everyday for hours on end. First few weeks my jaw was pretty sore, but overtime that soreness went away and my resistance built up. I can now chew regular gum for 12+ hours a day no issues with soreness, clicking or my TMJ.
I will mention in the beginning months I had issues with my jaw clicking, but after learning about mewing (proper tongue posture) the rest of my facial muscles must come back to match the new growth, and hence the clicking went away.
As someone else mentioned in another comment its about keeping everything in balance, if you start clicking make sure all you posture is correct, and then just give it extra time, then progress.
Its just like the gym, progressive overload, and then when you plateau, take a deload, or in the case of the jaw, maintain proper posture of your tongue, and body until you are able to start growing your jaw again with no pain nor clicking.
Hope this helps you on your jawline journey
AstronomicTimTam6@reddit
Overtime you will need to up the intensity as well, either using harder gums (falim or mastic) or even potentially getting one of the jawline exercising products. I'm yet to try those, but I have gotten pretty amazing results with mastic gum.
Party_Ad8213@reddit
Does mastic gum taste good at least? I got some gum for this but different brand and it tastes like something i should not put in my mouth, makes me nauseous. That aside did your jaw get better results from the gum or bc other factors like diet?
AstronomicTimTam6@reddit
The taste is pretty meh, but I dont get nauseous from it so I will keep doing i. As for my jaw I did see pretty noticeable improvement from chewing alone. I was pretty lean to begin with (probably around 10%) and my jawline was less visible than it now despite me being at a higher body fat percentage although I am still pretty lean somewhere around the 13-14% mark. Point is I saw jawline improvements from chewing whilst being in a caloric surplus. Aslong as you do it consistantly and enough to stimulate your jaw im sure you see atleast some improvements. For me it was pretty noticeable.
NeighborhoodBubbly57@reddit
Do you chew 1 piece at a time or two (one on each side)?
AstronomicTimTam6@reddit
Currently I just chew one at a time, I have tried to do two but I always end up getting them mashed together into one big piece. I just focus on trying to chew an even amount on each side to keep it even.
